تاریخِ شہباز گڑھی

Rate this book
Shahbaz Garhi / شہباز گڑھی is a village, located on the Mardan-Sawabi road, around 10 miles east of the city of Mardan, in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan.
The village, known as Po-Lo-Sha or Varshapura in ancient times, was a center of Buddhism, one of the four big cities of the region, and was located on the ancient route from Afghanistan to India.
It is no wonder then that the area has seen many great kings, people and armies pass through, including the famous Mauryan Empror Ashoka (also known as Ashoka the Great). Among the many archaeological sites that Shahbaz Garhi is home to, the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Asohkan Rock Edicts (known locally as Khkuli Gatt), is the most noteworthy.
This book explores the rich history, archaeological sites and notable personalities of Shahbaz Garhi.

An absolute delight!

This book, written by my father in 1969, details the history of my ancestoral village Shahbaz Garhi up to that point in time.
The village used to be on a major road in antiquity and has seen many ups and downs throughout history. The history of the region goes back to the BCE times... Yeah... It's THAT old.
What surprised me was that this wasn't just a boring history book. Sure, part of that was because I knew some of the people and places the book talked about, but also because when this was written, the village was gaining access to many new things including it's first highschool. You can sense the excitement in the way that whole process is discussed.
Also, I learned so many new things about my village and the surrounding areas. Always heard my parents talk about these places without having a frame of reference in my mind so this was definitely fun to read and has instantly become one of my favorite books.
