Love is Death

Life as I know it is irrevocably changed. I’m now the leader of the Shadow Guild, a ragtag bunch of supernaturals who don’t quite fit in anywhere but together. It should be perfect, but of course the magical world is never so easy.

For one, the man that I’m falling for—the Devil of Darkvale—is doomed by a curse that will drag him to hell. There’s only one solution—use magic to break the ancient, fated bond that binds us, and then don’t fall for each other.

That becomes difficult when a series of kidnappings forces us to work together. Love might equal death for the Devil and I, but with so many lives at stake, we must work together to save them…all without succumbing to the pull of fate.

Before becoming a writer, Linsey was an archaeologist who studied shipwrecks in all kinds of water, from the tropics to muddy rivers (and she has a distinct preference for one over the other). After a decade of tromping around in search of old bits of stuff, she settled down to start penning her own adventure novels and is freaking delighted that people seem to like them. Since life is better with a little (or a lot of) magic, she writes urban fantasy and paranormal romance.

This is fourth in a UF series that you definitely need to read in order.

So you know what you're getting. This one has the wobbliest plot so far. Like, we're going to Monte Carlo now? And Carrow is a professional-level poker player because, um, police training? Yeah, doesn't work.

But whatever. This story is largely forgettable. It's kind of a placeholder, maybe? Like there's no progress on anything important. Just a lot of frantic plotty things for reasons.

So this is a dip into three stars. I was engaged enough to be along for the ride. But it really was a placeholder more than anything else and all the important bits end up status quo ante.

A note about Steamy: There's a single explicit sex scene putting this on the low end of my steam tolerance. It was nice, but, well, placeholder.

Well this instalment had it all ! Evil James's Bond type villains, intriguing thieves, cults, magic and even a Goddess . Add in the fact that Carrow and her cursed Mate Grey are struggling just to keep their hands off each other and you know that this particular book really ramps up the tension.
As much as I love all the history and mythology that the author includes here until do think the assorted supporting characters add so much more. It's so always fun trying to guess who will get their own series and just what their secrets are. Plus with only one more book in this series we might finally learn exactly what Carrow is !
This voluntary take is of an advanced copy and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

THIS is the book where you finally start to feel some connection and chemisry between Grey and Carrow. I've been intrigued with the 'verse and that continues to expand, and I enjoy the details of the different locales, but it's the romance that brings me to the yard, so to speak, and I've wanted more for a while.

Is it a little repetitive? Yes, because there's only so many times you can say Cursed Mates and the almost hear that doom and gloom music in the background, but nothing substantial happens. It's a dependence on telling your audience about the *spooky music* curse, as opposed to really showing the curse. Kind of the same way the story spent too much time telling me about their feelings instead of showing it.

But in attempting to be proactive with the curse, there's more movement in the actual romance than there has been in the three books prior to this. Will I read the final book, coming out in September? As long as I remember to borrow it, yes. So there's that.

This is the fourth book in this series and each book is better than the last. There are magical people being kidnapped and some of them are Carrow's good friends. Also, Grey has found a spell to break the 'Cursed Mate' fate he has with Carrow. With the curse broken their lives should return to normal but they will have to work together to find and save the kidnapped people. I really enjoy the growing relationships between all the friends in this series. I like how they share their skills and knowledge to make everything better for everyone. This book is full of action and adventure that kept me on the edge of my seat, right to the end. I'm looking forward to the next book.

“Devilish Game” starts with a mother coming to Carrow because her daughter has been kidnapped and she needs assistance. Then other people are kidnapped including several of her friends from the witches guild.

As Carrow, Eve, Mac and Seraphia begin investigating, Grey discovers that he is turning human and will be dead soon. He and Carrow approach a witch regarding moving their mating bond and for a time he gets better but the witch warns they must stay away from each other. Well that’s not going to happen especially since Grey’s specific skills are needed in order the help res us the kidnapped.

In their attempt to uncover who is behind the kidnapping, the Scooby gang goes into the den of some unsavory characters. However, they also go to some special locations. This time, Carrow May be over her head especially when she discovers gods do exist and religious zealots are stronger than she imagined.

Once again I enjoyed this read but was put off by the lack of information on several of the character’s backgrounds. These books are shorter in length (250 pages) than most books so it’s not like the author couldn’t write the background scenes into an installment without making the read overly long. But that doesn’t seem to be happening. Well, the 5th book is the last one so I don’t have to worry about it much longer.

I am so totally addicted to Carrow and Grey. The fated mates curse is slowly killing Grey and they are desperately seeking a way to fix the problem. They go to a blood sorceress named Cyrenthia and with the help of Mordaca another blood sorceress they break the bond. The results are not what they expected.
Magical beings are also being kidnapped and no clues are left behind for Carrow to work with. Friends are disappearing and with no clues but one Grey and Carrow go to see another crime boss from Monaco, Anton the Deceiver.
Getting some answers they formulate a plan but will it be enough and who will survive.
Amazing book and series with strong characters and awesome friendships. A must read.

This is the fourth book in this series, and it was probably my favorite so far. To be fair and honest, though, I tend to like each book in a series better and better. LOL! Carrow is trying to clean up her new Guild House (isn’t there a spell for that?!?), and it doesn’t take long for trouble to strike. I admit that there was a point in this book where I really, really wanted to yell at Grey. He made me so angry! LOL! Anyway, this book was filled with the fun adventure and action that I’ve come expect from this author. This is fun, light urban fantasy to while away an afternoon with. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

Oh it;s all building nicely but will they or won’t they truly break the curse!!
Can they break the curse? Do they even want to...lol
Talk about drama...
And then there’s all the other problems that make cursed mates look like the smallest problem there is...lol
Kidnappings, zealots, magic and mayhem all kept be enthralled...

I spent this book mostly going - Grey no, what are you, stop now, oh for gods sake, stop it !
I love this series and I’m broken hearted to know the next book will be the last, I could read at least another 5 , but I am looking forward to a resolution to the cursed mates

Battle! When a cult tries to awaken a war Goddess, our heroine is called on to rescue kidnapped supernaturals. Meanwhile, her fated mate tries every spell possible to break their bond and forget their pleasant memories. Nice guy, but what do you expect when your fated mate is a cursed mate and a 500year old vampire. Not really warm fuzzy mates.

book is nice and light. I enjoy its story, however, feel that when there seems to be potion or charm for everything that it detracts from the depth which could come through struggle. Everything is just too easy

Good but repetitive

I enjoyed this book and look forward to the next one. I especially liked moving through the investigation process with Carrow and her team. The only critique I have is that Carrow's and Grey's inner dialog about needing to stay apart was repetitive and annoying at times. I hope that is better in the next one.

Carrow is trying to get the Shadow Guild together, it is slow going. She has the help of her friends and other guild members. There is so much she needs to wants to find out. She has seen or heard from Grey since the last time she saw him. Grey has basically disappeared.
Carrow is at the guild when an older lady comes seeking her help. Her daughter was kidnapped. Carrow was able to see what the older woman saw, she never saw anything like it. She receives a call that Grey is back. While the others help the older woman, she heads over to see him.
Grey went away to find a way to break the bond, he received the information he needed. He and Carrow decide not to put it off. They find out another person was kidnapped.
Carrow and Grey will have to work together while trying their hardest not to be to close to one another. Things will very tense between them and Grey will go to unusual lengths to put distance between them. The kidnappings are just the tip of the iceberg, there is something very dangerous going on. Carrow and the others lives on the line, unless they can stop it.

This was non stop action from start to end. You will be drawn in as Carrow and others try to determine what is going on and what the exact threat is. The pull between Grey and Carrow is keeps you reading as well. The problem with the curse and everything they are going through. I loved how the author ended this book. The author knows how to draw you in and hook you in the story. I really enjoyed reading this book and these characters. I really want more books with them all.

I received a complimentary copy of this book and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Fate and other fickle circumstances

Devilish Game is the 4th book in Linsey Hall's Shadow Guild series. We open with Grey on hell's doorstep, and Grey and Carrow opt for desperate measures to break their Cursed Mates status.

To outwit fate, Carrow and Grey partake in a blood ritual that allows us to briefly visit with blood sorceress extraordinaire, Mordaca of Magic's Bend, Oregon. It wouldn't be the saucy siren without a cryptic warning, and that's exactly what she leaves our fated couple with.

The funny thing about fate is, she doesn't like mere mortals or supernaturals messing around in her plans. And fate will take any opportunity to reassert her will, and it's often when you last expect it.

I enjoy this series no end. Carrow is a classic Hall heroine, spunky, smart, resilient and gorgeous. But it's Grey I'm fascinated with. A dark and damaged man, king of his own empire, he's drawn to Carrow on all levels. But he's the quintessential hero of literature, brooding, deep, a soul filled with the weight of his sins and sorrows. It makes Grey irresistible. I don't even try. Frankly, he's Hall's best hero to date, and she's had some excellent ones.

As with any Linsey Hall book, we get a historical setting, and Devilish Game is no different. Some of Hall's sorrow over the loss of historical sites through war seeps through. This is completely understandable considering the author's background. Here she uses it to good effect. It's integral to the story.

We are close to the pinnacle of this series with one remaining book to come. It's set to be an epic finale. Frankly, I wouldn't expect anything less from Linsey Hall.

I really enjoyed this next installment in this series and felt the romance element was much more honest this time around.

Carrow and Grey are still Cursed Mates and if they don't do something about the curse soon, they will end up much worse off! Luckily Grey manages to find a solution which works, but they have to keep their distance from each other. Shame that is not entirely possible with the new problem in Guild City which requires them to work together to resolve it. Several people have been kidnapped, including some of Carrow's friends and everyone pulls their knowledge and resources together to work out who, where, why and how they can be stopped!

Without the mates bond in place, you could sense and see the real attraction Carrow and Grey had for each other and it was no longer down to a magical curse - it was honest, it was real and I hope it is love too!

The kidnapping plot was great and I loved the way everyone was willing to do whatever they could to help - the secondary characters are fantastic and share their strengths as well as Carrow and Grey do! Carrow's powers are also growing rapidly, yet we still don't fully know what she is or what she is capable of. Can't wait to find out!

One book to go in this series and I hope it is an amazing end to it all!

Is there a possibility of breaking the cursed mates bond?

Carrow and the others are cleaning up their newly discovered guild when a lady comes screaming that someone has taken her daughter. Carrow, Eve, Mac and the others agree to help find the missing daughter. Grey convinces Carrow to go to a blood sorceress to break the cursed mates bond. They do and it works with a stern warning that the should keep their distance from one another of the fates may step in again and re-solidify their bond. Carrow needs his help though so they continue seeing each other but trying to keep their distance until the dream occurs but, is it really a dream? I absolutely love this book and series. Linsey Hall is an amazing storyteller, her plots are engrossing, characters well developed, detailed and engaging and the MCs are interesting, likeable and powerful. I am so excited for this final book of the series. I highly recommend all of Linsey's books and anxiously and impatiently await the conclusion to this series.

*Mild spoilers because it's the forth book in a series*

3,5 stars - I could copy the review from the third book and it were still all true. I back and forth in the relationship between Carrow and Grey continues and the rest if the plot is too shallow and fast paced because there are just not enough book for a good and thought through story because every story end within one book, I would have loved a bigger plot over a few of the Shadow Guild books but the way it is, everything feels repetitive and superficial. The end fights are over too quickly and I have nothing really motivating be to read the next books. I think I'm going to finish the last book just because I hope that at least in the last book the romance between Grey and Carrow will fully develop and because the books are short is does not cost me too much time but I will definitely never reread this series and I can't safely say that I would not recommend them if I don't know that this is exactly the thing they are looking for.

Chronique de Diana :

https://followthereader2016.wordpress...

The cursed mate bond had become a great and deadly challenge for Gray. What to do? All seemed to be crumping down when a new and unknown threat was lurking in the dark. Answers were needed and soon before all was lost to Carrow and Grey. Adventure, adventure and more adventure sprinkled with passion and despair. Liked grey’s POV struggling with his emotions and feelings for what must be done. Deep down Carrow had hoped to overcome the curse but seems Fate would not be cheated. Interesting and entertaining story with intriguing protagonists, magic, good secondary characters, an issue still to work over, passionate scenes, mystery, violence and detailed descriptions and narrations that add knowledge. Liked that the intensity of Carrow and Grey’s bond, their passion and the magic that keep them together was quite discussed and not only by the protagonists. Voluntarily reviewed this copy that I liked.

So WOW! Loved this book. The bond between Carrow and Grey is unbreakable. They go to a witch who calls on Mordaca from Magic's Bend to assist with breaking the Cursed Mates bond and it works but they are cautioned to stay away from each other or it will form again. Grey finds it impossible as Carrow's power grows and she pulls him in to her dream for an unforgettable night as they have a no holds barred night because they both believe it's just a dream. Upon waking they discover it was real. Grey goes back to the witch and has his warm and fuzzy memories of Carrow erased but when she's kidnapped by the baddies he gets all of his memories back. When the unthinkable happens a great sacrifice causes the Fated Mates bond to reform because these two love each other whether they're willing to believe it or not. Can hardly wait the next few weeks for the last installment.

Good

**Warning** cliffhanger ending. Well maybe book-hook, but still, you’ll want to line up the next book ready to read!
This is the fourth book in the series, and since it’s a continuity, it doesn’t standalone, you need to read the first three books. Although it ties in with the author’s other series, they can be read separately.

In this book, Carrow and Grey are trying to figure out how to stop their cursed mate status. Before they can though, Carrow is asked to solve some kidnappings, which proves to be just a little harder than they expected.

Another fast paced story, gradually bringing us to the finale. Carrow and Grey make some interesting relationship strides in this one, and have a few realizations!
If you enjoy urban fantasy (epic or multi volume style) and Linsey Hall books, you’ll love this series.

Linsey Hall Gets Better and Better

This is Book 4 in the series and the action and adventures are exciting and riveting. I couldn’t wait to get back to reading whenever I put my iPad down.

Carrow is now traveling to exotic locations with and without Grey, the handsome Devil who is also her Cursed Mate, a term which neither know the meaning. The main plot and action are based on ancient historical context giving the story more depth and interest. Cordelia, Carrow’s familiar raccoon, is adorably fun, insightful and deliciously bold. All the friends and witches are, as ever, fascinating, powerful and entertaining characters. This is a series where the author gets better and better with every book she writes. I am a definite admirer!

Here’s my review regarding this series - I initially had downloaded another series from Linsey Hall but realized before I started it that it was part of a larger multi series universe. I started on this series since it was what the authors reading order suggested. Overall I feel this could have been 3 slightly longer books rather than 5 books where I truly felt like 3 could have been skipped completely and I’d never know, and 4 just felt a bit rushed. I felt good about the conclusion, I liked the characters, they were funny, strong, and I loved the found family aspect. However I felt the author saying these get “steamy” is misleading. The “steam” is just a lot of tension with occasional non-descriptive sex scenes. There’s nothing wrong with that but I definitely expected more heat. I think this series just isn’t for me but I can see people loving it, I don’t plan on reading further.

Yet another phenomenal book by Linsey Hall! Devilish Game picks up right where book three ended. Carrow and her friends are the new members of the Shadow Guild-- a guild for supernatural beings that do not fit in with any of the other guilds. However, there is one thing that is weighing down Carrow's mind, the Cursed Mate bond that she shares with the Devil. As much as she should stay away from him, Carrow can't help but be drawn to him. Add in the fact that members of the guild city are getting kidnapped, and it is yet another mystery for Carrow to solve. This fast-paced novel will have you on the edge of your seat and craving more. I can't wait for book five!!!

A fascinating series of magic and romance!

This series had captured me from the beginning. Carrow and Grey are cursed mates that are drawn to each other despite their bond being deadly to one another. It's fast paced adventure filled with fantasy, magical creatures and romance. I loved each story so far and can't wait to dive into the last book in this series to see what happens to the cursed pair.
I highly recommend this series. It's really great writing and had kept me flipping pages, albeit on my kindle, and I believe you will love these characters and the world they are in as much as I do.

This one kind of lost me a little. I felt like the whole plot of this book wasn’t really necessary to the main plot of the series. Like the bad guys and things they may have happened in previous books were necessary. Finding out about the Shadow Guild and all that, played a big part in finding a place for Carrow in Guild City but the whole kidnapping/Goddess thing in here, it wasn’t necessary. I kind of felt that this whole book could have been skipped when it came to the bigger picture. Don’t even get me started on all the doom and gloom mentions about the Cursed Mates. I kind of over all that now. Just solve the problem and let us see some proper romance between these two.
