Jason Thorpe was content living a quiet life in New Orleans. He and his best friend Ode opened their cozy curios shop in the French Quarter, and he was making some new, albeit interesting, friends….

Then Jason met Varic Maedoc, the prince of the vampyrs, and his life changed forever.

Named the prince’s consort, Jason quickly became the most important subject in the vampyr realm, the man who holds the wolf of Maedoc’s heart—a position that comes with certain obligations and no small amount of influence. Theirs is a partnership of love and a lifetime commitment, but that bond is about to be tested when Varic must return to court and Jason accompanies him.

The king’s court in Malta is unlike anything Jason could have imagined. Amidst the luxury and decadence of the palace is an air of danger and intrigue he is unprepared for, further complicated by new friends and allies who may not be what they seem. To stand beside and protect Varic, Jason must use every weapon in his arsenal to uncover a plot to usurp the king and reveal the identities of those who would see Jason dead before accepting him as their consort.

His single greatest asset is the love of his prince, but even that may not be enough to save Jason’s life.

I enjoyed the hell out of this vampyr romance sequel and I’m positively obsessed with this cast of classic Calmes characters!

I thought I was sufficiently into the Noreia (the vampyr race Calmes has so uniquely created here) back in book one (His Consort), but that book now seems like child’s play after the high levels of action, intrigue and romance that were delivered here in this sequel.

Leaving New Orleans behind, Varic, prince of the vampyrs, whisks his new love, Jason Thorpe, back home to Malta, where the vampyr royals hold court and everyone has an agenda… many of which do not align with Varic bringing his human mate and consort home to help rule at his side.

In classic Mary Calmes style, this story was high-octane from start to finish, squeezing in as much action and suspense as there was sex and romance. As expected, the relationship grows hard and fast, and the plots (plural) to rid Varic of Jason go from one crazy exploit to another. It was a lot, but damn it was fun!

I didn’t feel we got much in the way of actual feelings in book one, where Jason and Varic’s romance was concerned, but I felt it here. Their love came quick, but it rings true—those classic, growly, possessive, need-to-claim-you-so-everyone-knows-you’re-mine vibes that only mated couples so obsessively reach in PNR and fantasy reads, Jason and Varic are the epitome of that. And I’m here for it all, if that wasn’t clear.

Undoubtedly, this was wordy, with the world-building playing out in many, many character discussions about the vampyr race, oftentimes depicting their still archaic and brutal natures through their outdated traditions and laws. It was a lot to take in, but again, I was here for it. I liked the history of it—the lore—and I especially enjoyed the new Malta setting, and reading about how the royals ruled and how each position within the vampyr houses played out for each character introduced. This sort of detail won’t be for everyone, but I always seem to enjoy this kind of thing.

It also helped that, although this was an unfathomably large cast of characters to keep track of, I found myself deliciously swamped with new and old faces to obsess over. I love so many of the side characters, especially in relation to their dynamics with Jason (Tiago, in particular, kills me), that these scenes alone provided a large portion of my overall enjoyment.

A lot of elements come into play in this sequel, and a lot of big things happen—so much so, that more stories set in this world, revolving around these characters, uncovering deeper plots and following more love stories, has to be a MUST going forward. I, for one, will be picking up any future sequels as soon as they’re available, I honestly had that much fun here.

Any book that can hold my attention rapt like this did, while also making me laugh continually and even shedding some tears throughout, is naturally a book worthy of my praise. This was a pure joy to read and I already look forward to re-reading again in the future. <3

3.5 Sequel Stars!

One either likes Calmes or doesn’t or as is often in my case, I know what to expect and when I’m in the mood for such shenanigans, I see what’s left available on her backlog and go forward. Here, this vampire paranormal sequel takes her tried and true storytelling to the max!

-Inane details, this time on decor? Check
-Stilted unfinished convos that abound? Check
-An irresistible alluring MC that has great unique powers? Check
-Passionate vampire mate claiming? Check
-Assholes who’re gonna hate? Check
-Violence, gore, and depravity? Check
-So many characters, so many rules, so many terms? CHECK!!

I obviously enjoyed myself. This had snark, silliness, and smexy smex! What more could you ask for from Calmes?

Absolutely loved it... and I also loved rereading the previous book before I started this one. I think I actually loved it more the second time around.

I do have to say that I enjoyed this one a bit more than the previous book but that has to do with the fact that it took so long for the two of them to get together in His Consort.

I think it's time for some Mary Calmes' re-reads... I do love her books and they always make me feel so good!!!

Wow...I didn't expect this to be sad. I cried! In a Mary Calmes book I freaking cried! I hate how some things turned out. It pissed me off, but kudos to Mary for pulling it off. And the court intrigue, the mystery. She kept me guessing as to who was going to be the bad guy.

Now, I will say, how many freaking times can one person be kidnapped? It was a little OTT but, hey, it is MC we're talking about here. OTT is her middle name. And there's lots of sex. Every adventure was followed by sex. But that's okay too.

I'm looking forward to more in this series. Wish I had the next one now.

Best Mary Calmes book

This is by far Calmes' best work. The plotting is secondary to the sheer amount of FEELS & ANGST I was forced to experience as she broke my heart and made me laugh and smile and sob. Well done. This book shines in the last act, and I am certain if she catches the same magic again, the third book will be even better.

Mixed feelings.
I enjoyed this more than the first book in the series but I also disliked it more? Totally makes sense.

The good:

~ The secondary characters are excellent in His Prince . Ode and her family are MIA for the most part other than a throw away comment here and there. Despite the fact that I really wish the characters remained racially diverse I much prefer well rounded characters with depth. And everyone has depth in His Prince , ulterior motives and the likes.

~ Love the world building. Learning the workings of Vampyr Court. History, past betrayals that come to light. Digging deeper into what it means to be a a human vampyr .

The bad

~ It was incredibly repetitive, the sex became a bit gratuitous to be honest despite it not lacking steam and the plot was filled with repetitive sequences of events

~ The chemistry remains between Jason and Varic but I wouldn't call it emotional/relationship growth. There is a little more talking of balance and the likes but 90% of their interactions take place in between the sheets. Which is fine, insta-love/mate and all but I would have liked to feel more depth to their relationship by now. And, I just didn't.

So I don't know, I enjoyed it, I finished it but... I am left a bit dissatisfied.

With the third book out I decided a re-read was in order. I enjoyed it but then I am a huge fan of Calmes work. I’m rating it lower this time round since the endless life and death situations annoyed me a lot more.

Original review - 4.75*

I found it impossible to put this book down. It’s such a fabulous read.

I will say Jason needs a sat phone or a wearable panic button more than anyone I’ve ever come across. He moves from one life or death situation to the next. With no phone signal. I mean seriously it got the point I was thinking. Don’t waste time checking your phone you know there’s no signal.

Despite the phone issues this turned out to be unputdownable. Now I’m just waiting for the next book.

I had a great time reading this. ❤️

Single, first person POV, 'His Prince' picks up after the events of 'His Consort', with Varic and Jason newly bonded, still in New Orleans, and getting ready to visit the king’s court in Malta to meet Varic's parents, and, while trying to navigate their new and deepening relationship, end up fending off attacks and attempts on their lives, maneuver court intrigue and politics, and try to survive betrayal, and murder.

There's plenty of twists and turns that keeps the plot flowing and suspenseful, leading to a final act that kept me glued on the edge of my seat.

There's romance, betrayal, attempted murder, and new friendships to explore in this second installment into the 'House of Maedoc' series. I thoroughly enjoyed this, and I really hope the series continues, but if not I'm happy with how it ends.

Re-Read, 2024

Refresher for the third book. I still enjoyed it and it still made me sad.

I was definitely shaking my head at Jason AND Varic.

On to the new one!
*******
I couldn't recall how I felt after reading His Consort so I just did a quick re-read of my review.

It seems I really enjoyed it but didn't think it was perfect.

This was pretty much the same. I really loved the Mary-ness of the story. But, of course I did since I love Mary. I really enjoyed the intrigue of the Royal Court and all the various players. This one totally gave me the Jin and Logan vibe that I didn't necessarily pick up in the first one like other readers did. Really, it made me want to re-read that series.

I just am a little off when it comes to Jason and Vairk. They need more on page time together. Varik needs to relax, let Jason talk and not just claim, claim, claim.

Jason could do with a little relaxing himself. He has a bit of a temper at times too.

This was a lot of kidnapping and escape and not a lot of romance.

My heart did break a few times and I'm still a little sad.

I'm into it but it isn't my favorite of Mary's. I hope they get to go back to NOLA.

So, I didn’t love His Consort, but I enjoyed it. Mary admits she loves world building and she definitely continues in this.

There are entire sections devoted to explaining side characters’ lives who don’t even make it to the end of the story. It’s got Mary’s “formula” – One alpha male, one clueless, loveable, big hearted male, the women who adore said big-hearted guy, the mysterious words, the separate nature of the two “lovers”, lots of aggressive sex and then some bad guys.

What surprised me was the sheer number of times Jason almost gets killed. Who is this guy, Jory?

Varic is pretty much a non-entity for most of the story. “I’m sorry Jason – you almost got killed. I swear we won’t be apart again. Forgive me.” Then, next chapter. “Ok, no really, Jason, I mean it. I won’t ever leave you alone, you’re far too precious and fragile.” Then, next chapter. “Ok for REALS, we are not going to part – EVER – what? Another meeting? Sure, Jason you stay here, I’m sure you’ll be fine.”

I think Jason nearly buys it 5 times. There is a lot of sadness. The King and his whole lot are pretty gross. Sorry. But they are. I couldn’t get too involved in their story because they’re all kind of a-holes who sleep with whoever they want and are pretty snobbish. Sure, I can get behind historical changes and blood lines etc – but I still didn’t like them.

It felt a lot – to me – like her Change of Heart series. You could sub out Jason and Varic for Jin and Logan and Domin and Mikhail for Gideon and Zev. (Poor Gideon – GAH!)

Anyhow – it was entertaining in that way that something comfortable is entertaining if not earth shattering.

This book has everything!
Assassination attempts by loyal friends
Assassination attempts by BDSM’ers
Assasionation attempts by a ninja (!!!!)
And this all takes place in what’s touted to be the safest, most high-tech place in Malta (famously known for their ninjas).

What is this crazy shit? Well, I know it’s not good but I also know it’s not completely terrible. Okay, yes it’s terrible but it sits in that magical space where it’s so completely OTT that it becomes entertaining by the sheer force of its badness. The human MC is a Mary-Sue who is so damn earnest that I’d want to slap him if he wasn’t busy getting attacked every 5 minutes. He’s constantly asking a million questions about his new vampyr life (people, this series is so talky!) and is so intent on learning his role of consort that even getting attacked on a remote island and forced into a closet doesn’t stop him from asking the not really important questions. The vampire MC swears over and over to protect his mate but then is never around for multiple assassination attempts and abductions. I think I was either laughing or groaning by the last one.

I don’t even know how to rate this except maybe E for extraordinarily bad but certainly entertaining.

(reread) Still as sappy and sweet as I remember, with a heavy plot and excellent characters. Exactly what I love about books like this.

———
previous review:

“You smell like some enchanted, primordial forest that I want to be lost in forever.”

4.75/5.
This was sappy and cheesy and full of romance shit like “you’re my everything” and “I can’t live without you” and “never leave me”.

Man was this part good. I especially loved all the action and betrayal. This was one hell of a fun ride.

Sure, the romance was way too much at times but I certainly didn’t mind.

And I absolutely loved all the characters as well. The new ones, the old ones, the lost ones, everyone. The loyalty and friendship was unmatched. One of the highlights of this book.

I really do love it when the first book of a series proves me wrong. I had my doubts about this series but the world building seemed so intriguing to me that I had to keep going. Luckily, I did. I would have missed out big time.

Going into this book I was overwhelmed – but not in the good way. I have to admit the first book in this series didn't make enough impression for me to remember much after all this time, so there firstly there were a lot of names I should be familiar with but wasn't and of course there came some new on top and if you already read Mary Calmes you know she has hand for using exotic names, also the odd hierarchy system with ridiculous titles and customs didn't help me much to find my way into the world of vampyrs. Then there was this dynamic between Jason and Varic where I needed a head start to get a feel for the typical possessiveness which even for Calmes' standards was a lot to take in.

So I wasn't sure if it would be the right book for my current mood or if I have to try again at another time but I kept reading anyway because here and there I saw the usual Calmes magic, placed my focus on Jason's Varic-free times and as there is a lot of that in My Prince I suddenly found myself in the typical maelstrom of a Mary Calmes story where she can state everything and I'm not able to think clearly about it before I'm swept away with the next over the top sensation and there is a lot that happens here. In fact everytime Varic leaves Jason alone believing him safe or at least safe-guarded the story steps it up a notch. The void Varic leaves is instantly filled with new danger and acquaintances where the author allows some support characters their own history. I loved that but it also made that void more obvious. Yes, Jason is only in Malta because of Varic and he is in that danger because of his relationship with the vampyr but sometimes Varic is more a support character then some of the others. There is only 1 MC in this book and I'm completely confident with that. There is so much action, danger, friendship and turmoil that I left the book exhausted – but now in a good way.

His Prince by Mary Calmes

Rating: 5 stars

Words cannot express how much I loved this book. I could not put down this book from the moment I started reading it. I did not want it to end. I cannot remember the last time I was so emotionally invested in the characters in a book that I would break down crying my eyes out while reading. I had to put the book down for a bit because the events made me so sad. That’s not to say that it had a sad ending. I was very satisfied with the ending and hope that it is open ended enough that the author will decide to make it a trilogy. I want to continue to read about these characters. I loved the book so much that even though I read it through the KU program, I had to buy my own copy. It’s exceedingly rare that I give out 5-star ratings anymore, but this book deserved it and then some. Absolutely loved it and plan to read it again in the future.

Just pure heart.

Like all her stories, Mary Calmes brings so much life and love to the worlds she creates. Her characters live and breathe and interact with such vibrancy that you are sucked into their lives and never want to leave despite all the heartbreak and sadness they endure. Thank you so much for inviting us into this wonderful world of the vampyrs and humans, it has been a pleasure to read the love story of two such memorable people and those around them.

This story has a lot of action, the human lead is almost killed so many times I lost count, he is frequently severely injured but fortunately it seems that blood from his vampire mate cures most damage. Said mate apologises a lot but is a repeat offender. Unusually for this author some main characters are killed, and there is a hint of bestiality; this is probably my least favourite of her many series.

Cor blimey there's a lot of murdering in this one!

I lost count of the number of people who ended up deaded in this book because ot seemed like that, on every page that Jason and Varic weren't getting jiggy with it, people were trying to kill the Consort and failing.

Honestly, I had somewhat of a bemused smirk on my face throughout as each time it seemed like Jason was settling into his role at the King's Court in Malta, someone else would come out of the woodwork, declare themselves a traitor, and try to kill him.

The politicking was excellently done mind, and I was truly sad at some of the deaths.

Others I'd have preferred to see get their just deserts a bit more painfully.

Overall though, it's as chaotic as book one, I just think I enjoyed it more this time round!

Magnifico risultato.

I was hooked, i'd been hoping for a sequel to His Consort and this was incredible just stunning writing all around. There's a lot that shouldn't have worked for me and yet i enjoyed every moment.

Although my heart literally shattered and got pieced back together a few time throughout, this story hit me in all the feels. It had me laughing, shocked and crying I just loved it so much.

The world building is stunning and I love how this looks at vampires, recognising their ancient with different views and cultures which were fascinating.

Of course my fave guy is still Jason though, who always has such a beautiful view on the world and his 21st century ideals I just love him a lot. He captures my heart every time, is he probably too perfect? Definitely. Do I care?Nope.

I recognise there's cliches here and yet there's also some incredible unique ideas, amazing character building especially which considering how many there are is crazy. Yet I could name them all and their individual moments, there were so many introduced in this one that I loved.

Of course i am always here for kickass females and Nerilla pretty much had me from the start, i adored her and her love.. She was beautiful. The queen is awesome too. And I was all in for champion Zev, he is such a complex and fun character. There's too many to mention though. So lets just say the characters are well developed and even had me liking the villains again which is always a bonus.

Theres a lot of twist and turns throughout this story, with some amazing action scenes which I am always a fan off. Although did have to suspend my disbelief at how many times it happens. Where are the guards and protectors, makes them look awful at their job. "Guys you had one job..." -But oh well, it meant I got to see more of Jason kicking ass so I'm cool with that.

Again the romance is sweet, but not really the focus it's always more of a sidenote. Varic is absent a lot of the time and so still don't get chance to know him as much as the other characters, which is just a bit disappointing since he is the prince and Jason's partner.

I will admit the scenes when they're together are beautiful though and steamy as heck, along with some wonderful discussions. As both still trying to find their balance with one another so i loved that.

Overall an entertaining read with a sweet ending. I hope there will be more books in this world as so many characters I adore and would love to see more from. Even if it switched to focus on different mc and relationship, I'd be down for that... particularly Zev or Tiago.

YES, YES, and YES!!

I have always loved the work of Mary Calmes and this series is no exception. In the first book we were introduced to Jason, a war veteran with some special powers, and Varic, a vampire prince. The two are drawn to one another realizing they seem to have been meant for one another. This second book in the series, continues their story as they are summoned by the King, Varic’s father, to return home. Much drama ensues...as in any good Calmes novel, and the story is one heck of a satisfying ride. I’m fairly certain the stage is set for a third novel in the series...or at least I hope so.

The author’s characters are a delight. The protagonists are individuals you would really love to go have a cup of coffee with. There is always enough of a backstory to help the reader understand the character. You can see the characters develop and grow as the story, and series, continues. As with the author’s other series, this is one I plan on reading several times. It is just that good.

This book is far better than the first one. Court life is so full of betrayal, lies and secrets and barbaric rules. In midst of that Jason and his love Prince Varic found their happily ever after. Jason has a hero streak always saving someone. Varic isn't the cold ruthless vampyre, he gets some of his humanity back- which is kinda sweet. Love changes you after all ! Gideon would betray them never expected that at all nor that Zev and Gideon were together. Tiago and Hadrian make a very strong couple. And i enjoyed Tiago's antics. In all total i really enjoyed the series. 😊

Good

Good addition to the series

I really enjoy Jason, he is competent and really doesn’t need anyone to save him. I liked that he stood up for himself when Varic forgot about his needs or arranged something that wasn’t working for Jason. He made friends and understood when he had made a mistake.

Varic was also good in this one, but at the same time he seemed a little out of sorts and forgot Jason’s needs a lot. He had responsibilities but also didn’t protect Jason at times, especially when Jason had already been attacked in an area that was meant to be safe.

The secondary characters are again well done. I want to see where it goes with some of them

I really am enjoying the cast of characters in this book. The storyline is solid and twisty and turns enough to keep you interested. A bit was a little predictable, but I have found that is true with most novels. It didn't take away any enjoyment whatsoever for me. The only complaint is that sometimes, when the author was trying to show Jason 's humanity, it seemed excessive, and he a]eared to be approaching sainthood.
