When MI6 sends Evelyn Ainsworth back to Oslo, no one expects any complications, least of all Evelyn. With her identity locked down and her section classified, both her location and her mission are secure.
Or so they thought.
After months of inactivity and scattered warnings across Europe, Hitler finally moves, but not in the direction everyone expects. With tensions between England and Norway rising, the Führer seizes the opportunity to send an invasion force north – straight into Norway.
Trapped in Oslo and facing an advancing German army, Evelyn embarks on a desperate flight to escape the infamous SS. But a deadly foe is right behind her and, as time runs out, she must rely on others to get her out alive…
…or fall victim to the horrors of a war that has well and truly begun.
I love the way this author is able to draw you in till you feel you are there. The description of the country as they travel makes it easy to see it in your mind. You can almost feel the cold as they walk through the snow. Evie is trapped in Norway when the Germans invade. There is a SS officer who is there just to find her. You get to follow her and her new friends as they try to help her stay ahead of the people looking for her.
This is the second book in the series and can be read stand alone. It will make you want to go back and read the first one. This book should be made into a movie. I recommend this book to everyone.
Book three in this excellent series. Norway has been invaded by the Germans. Sweden surrendered without a fight. Evelyn recruited by M16 is very new to the spy business. She has a natural instinct for this time of work and she is a survivor. She has been sent to Oslo, Norway and has teamed up with a Norwegian woman named Anna. They have bonded and to say they are close friends is an understatement. Their similarities are extremely evident. Stubborn, resourceful, courageous. Many of the incidents depicted are documented historical fact. This is an amazing read. I hope this series continues. Enjoyed immensely!!! My highest recommendation!
I lived in Stuttgart, Germany 18 years after the end of WW2 and saw no evidence of that war. During my European I visited family in Norway from Oslo in the South to Harstad in The North. I was the first one in my family to visit. All my grandparents came from Norway in t early 1900's. The settled in Eastern Alberta where they farmed.
This book helped me understand what happened in the war. Apparently one of my great uncles was in the underground and we were told that he was one of the underground who smuggled heavy water out of Norway.
Thank you so much for writing this book. As I read it I could feel like I was there.
This is a fast moving novel about the Resistance getting established simultaneously with the invasion by the Germans of Norway. It's hard to put the book down! Although the basic framework of history is there, it reads like a novel. This is definitely one of the better spy stories that I have read. The author details the actual war incidents that she used in the story in an addenda with references. The book is well researched with the thoughts and attitudes of the Norwegian people well amplified in the story. A very worth-wile read!
Fear is a great motivator and sometimes enables a person to do the impossible. Another survival lesson learned by our heroine in this third book about the early days of WW2. In the Shadows of War series, Night Falls on Norway, the author has again crafted a fact-based story of intrigue, love, hardship and the effects of war on those most affected by it. When subjected to the evils of oppression, patriotism rises to the surface!
Another great read in the Shadows of War series by CW Browning. Although this book focuses more on Norway and its invasion by Germany, than on espionage and intrigue, it is nevertheless still a gripping read. CW Browning has again done her research, insightfully weaving fact and fiction into a story you can't put down until you've turned the last page, and are left wanting more. Another must read.
Night over Norway continues the fight for Evelyn Ainsworth against the Nazi’s. In each of the books in this new series by C.W. Browning, the suspense builds and Evelyn finds herself in more & more danger. While reading this book and feeling the tension build, I was reminded of how I felt during the Next Exit series. C.W. Has done it again!! It is a worthwhile read, and I couldn’t put it down. A lot of interesting history in this story as well.
Another very good book in This series I certainly hope there are more I Feel there's more to the story to be heard If you haven't started this series Start it now it's really good I've enjoyed them all Great work I'm doing this with the microphone and they don't seem to know when the stop Maybe I need to say full stop And get a.That didn't work Looking forward to Another chapter in the story Full stop. mj
This was very entertaining AND provoked a lot of anxiety!
I was very invested with the characters and even the long walk in the mountains with 12 inches of snow kept my full attention.
The main character is strong willed and physically stong, but shows a little vulnerability which makes very endearing.
The "lips" are still there, but even though I noticed it, I was too enthralled in the story and let it go. I think there were a little less mentions of them.
Evie gets into another too close encounter against evil. She has an angel on her shoulder, maybe a Russian spy? While I think I might know who the mole in London is ... guess we'll just have to wait for Book 4. Can't wait for this to continue!!
But then I couldn’t put it down. I have never read or heard anything about Norway during WWII and this book is about the very beginning of the German invasion. What a story! Don’t miss it and read the Author’s Notes to find out more about some of the incidents described in the book. I always find them enlightening when reading historical novels.
I have just completed the three novels of the Shadow of War series. All three books are excellent, and I highly recommend them. The books are well written, exciting and the characters are superb. The author puts the readers in the middle of action. I hope there will be more books coming in the series.
Interesting story of historical fiction. Not much action, however. Lots of filler dialogue that was not germane to the plot. Characterization good, but many circumstances described strained credulity.
I thoroughly enjoyed this third book in the series. After I finished the book I was so interested in the role of the Scandinvaian countries in World War II.
5 days. Impossibly cold weather, deep snow, walking almost all of the way, scarce food, dodging the Germans, meeting good people along the way, makes for excellent reading.
These books are so good, with many plot twist. For the most part it stays true to history. Any one interested in W W 2 will love these book. These spy stories make you feel right to the action.
Thoroughly enjoying this series of WW11. This is the first book that I have read that explains how Norway entered the war and the events leading to it. Onto the next one
