I REALLY enjoyed the FIRST half of the book. The characters were interesting, and I loved the portrayal of the Duke's son (he was so sweet), sometimes children in books are not well written, this was written nice. I also found the chemistry between the characters strong.
Where the book FAILED, for me, was the SECOND half. Once the main characters established they had chemistry, the heroine, Jo, knows she wants to take things slow. Her first marriage was done in haste and ended up being bad. She also has a passion for the work she does in the home for Women and Children. However, EVERYONE, EVERYONE insists, she SHOULD marry the Duke, that it's a done deal, and NO ONE LISTENS TO HER, or her valid concerns. It drives me nuts, it's like they are gas-lighting her. "Just get married, and live happily ever after and turn over your Home for Women and Children to the other lady, isn't that wonderful!" Even the hero, whose inner monologue of like, "Yup, she's going to marry me. We are going to get married, she doesn't know it yet" disgusted me. HE failed to listen too. All her concerns were valid. He's a duke, she's been out of "Society" forever. Even his speech of, "So am I [he was a former solicitor before inheriting the dukedom], but it'd be better for me, with you beside me" was written REALLY poorly and disgusted me, as the focus was about HIM, and not HER. Just, gross. Which is a shame. I got 89% into the audiobook, but just could not finish with all this. Sigh.
I rather he listened to her and they took it slow. For all the progressiveness of the book, this inability for ANYONE to listen to the heroine drove me to stop. For all that, the first half was a 5-star, the last half was 1-star, so I split the difference and rate 3-star.
