A funny and delightful story from the New York Times bestselling author of the St. Helena Vineyard series that fans of Avery Flynn, Kristan Higgins, and Helena Hunting will love.

Set against the breezy backdrop of coastal Rhode Island, bestselling author Marina Adair’s latest novel asks whether two of a small town’s biggest hearts can learn to put themselves first—in the name of love. . .

As caregiver for her autistic brother, Beckett Hayes knows how meaningful a little extra help can be when life happens. Which is why she runs Consider It Done, a personal concierge service in her small town. Her job also gives her the flexibility to follow her passion, being Rome, Rhode Island's unofficial special needs advocate, training emotional support companions in her spare time. There's not much of that, though, and certainly not enough for serious dating. It's always been family first for Beck. But one unquestionably gorgeous, good-natured man is suddenly a temptation that's getting tougher to resist...

Sixteen years ago, Levi Rhodes was ready to sail off into the sunset--literally. But then his father's death and his sister's unexpected pregnancy postponed his sailing scholarship and the adventures he had planned. Running the family marina and bar was the least he could do for his grieving mother. Plus, his niece needed a father-figure. But now that she's in high school and has her bio-dad in her life, Levi's wondering if it's time to get his sea legs under him again...until curvy, caring Beck showed up in his bar, and then in his dreams...

Hopeless Romantic by Marina Adair
2nd book in the When in Rome series. Contemporary romance. Can be read as a stand-alone but better as part of the series.

Beckett has her hands full raising her younger brother, keeping her father on track and trying to run her business. Flirting with bar owner Levi gives her a thrill she never imagined would go any further. Until it does.
A wonderful romance with the highs and conflicts expected. The secondary story extended from the first book has Paisley leaning to drive and thinking about boys which throws her three fathers into a minor tailspin. Think 3 men and a baby at the mid teen level.

Quite a bit of this story involves with the efforts of caring for a child with autism spectrum disorder as well as a high functioning adult.
I felt Beckett’s burden was real and overwhelming. I was glad she was able to fall for Levi and get a little time for herself. She’s strong and dependable and deserves the hero cape she wears.

4.5.

I have read the first book in this series this summer so I was very happy to see I was approved for the sequel. I really liked Levi’s character in the first book so I was sure I would like it.

Levi is the most eligible bachelor of Rome (Rhode Island, not Italy), he has his own restaurant and is an uncle to now almost grown up teenage girl. Beckett on the other hand is a very busy girl, with her brother and dad she takes care of as well as million other stuff, and being in a serious relationship is the last thing on her mind. However when Levi’s and Beckett’s lives collide and they have to plan a wedding together, they can’t keep their hands to themselves.

This seemed like quite a cute story at first and I usually really love haters to lovers book but everything seemed to go to fast in this one. It felt like their relationship went from 0 to a 100 and I’m more of a slow burner fan.

I feel like I was more invested in side plots than the main one. For example, I love how Beckett’s brother suffers from Autism and her dad from Aspergers which isn’t usually that talked about, especially in contemporary romance. I love how the author portrayed everyday struggles of people with ASD and upon reading this, I definitely want to learn more about it.

I also liked reading about Levi’s struggles being an uncle to a girl whose mother recently passed. Her ‘dad’ are now Paisley’s keepers and it’s quite for them to see her grow up.

That being said, the romance was not for me. I wasn’t invested in it at all and I found it mild and a bit boring.

In the end, I really hated Levi’s character. How should you help a girl who already has so much work literally every day? Give her another job of being in charge of your restaurant when you can’t. And then when someone robs you it’s her fault because she had so much work. Levi might be a hottie but he’s a toxic one for sure. It’s a no from me.

And of course in the end everything turned out to be rainbows and flowers and it was so rushed. The last 30% of the book is what ruined it for me.

So in the end, this was an okay book but I had so many issues regarding two main characters. That’s why I can’t rate it more than 3 stars.

** MILD SPOILERS THROUGHOUT **

I wish I can say that I enjoyed reading this… alas, I lost interest somewhere about 40% into the book. In addition, the last-minute drama and how Levi reacted to it, cemented my initial opinion about the guy. I thought he was an a$$ who was full of judgement towards Beckett.

First thing, this was the second book in Marina Adair’s When in Rome series. Please note that this is Rome, Rhode Island, not the one in Italy *smile*. While some books can be read as stand-alone, I thought maybe it would work better for me if I read the first book. Because I felt like I was missing an initial vibe of these characters. I wonder if I was introduced with Levi and Beckett a bit earlier, I might warm up to them quicker.

The story was rather slow-start; meaning yes, Levi and Beckett had banters, and they didn’t immediately date or something. Especially because Beckett was drown in her odd jobs and her family. In fact, I thought the first half was more about the family rather than the two of them, which was probably, why I started to lose interest

I appreciated the author for writing secondary characters with issues – Thomas, Beckett’s brother, was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Beckett’s father, Jeffrey, was also in a spectrum although classified as high-functioning. However, while I thought Thomas’ was well described, I thought the change in Jeffrey near the end was a bit too abrupt. Like, the author didn’t know how to help her own heroine, so she took some sort of miracle with Jeffrey.

I felt sorry for Beckett, though – she definitely needed a better support system to help her get through the day. I didn’t say that she wasn’t capable of dealing with his brother and his father, but Beckett could need someone who championed her for her. Unfortunately, I didn’t think that her so-called-best-friend Annie (who apparently the main female character for the first book) or Levi were that someone.

I mean, how come Annie didn’t know that Beckett would get the additional stress for organizing her wedding?!? Beckett already had too much to deal with! Then, Levi, URGH that guy! He claimed that Beckett didn’t care about her own happiness (maybe she did) but instead of really support and help, Levi added more work to Beckett, AND THEN HAD THE GALL to get angry with her, accused her a LOT, and thought “it was because she cared too much for her family?”

WHAT THE F*CK, LEVI?!?

I lost all respect to Levi… and I thought Beckett could get better friends and better love interest. This book didn’t leave me with warm fuzzy happy feeling. Sorry!

Please note that I received this via NetGalley. This did not affect my rating or review.

If I had known this was a second book in a series I would not have selected it. I came in cold and didn't know all of the relationships/characters so felt very behind while reading this one. Ultimately I gave this one 3 stars because it did not hold my interest at all. The flow of the book was really slow throughout the first half and then we suddenly go into relationship mode and I struggled to finish this one. It took me about 2 weeks to get through, but I just didn't feel like posting updates about it.

"Hopeless Romantic" is the second book in the "When in Rome" series. Rome in this case is Rome, Rhode Island. This second book follows Beckett Hayes who is focused on taking of her brother and running her business called 'Consider it Done.' Beckett (Beck) though is now starting to think more about Levi Rhodes who has been stuck in Rome since he decided to stay and take care of his family. The book focuses on them and their romance.

There's of course some issues/obstacles that the couple has to work through. I have to say though at times Levi came across like a jerk to me. No spoilers, but there seemed to just be a case of the woman has to do everything and he's just there. I do think the book showed how both of them are overworked and overwhelmed though.

The writing was fine I thought, just the flow hampered the book. Since I had not read the first book I just felt like I was wrong footed most of the book. I hate reading books out of order.

I was actually glad to read a book that takes place in a state I don't know much about which is often not a setting for movies or books.

This was a fun, light, romantic comedy that was a perfect escape. I enjoyed the first book and this was a perfect continuation. I enjoyed the cameos from the characters I loved in the first book and really enjoyed Beckett and Levi getting the main stage. Beckett is a funny, caring, and selfless character and I was rooting for her to get the growth she needed. And I love her father and brother even with their difficulties from being on the spectrum. IM did think Levi’s change from unapologetic bachelor to gone for Beckett was a little sudden but her journey from the boring nothing guys to accepting a relationship was much more believable. I love the humor that Marina weaves through the story and my absolute favorite character is Gregory Pecker the emotional support chicken.

{Thank you to Netgalley and Kensington Publishing for providing me with this advanced copy in exchange for my honest review!}

I really enjoyed Marina Adair's first book in this series, RomeAntically Challenged, and was so excited to read her upcoming sequel, Hopeless Romantic!

3.5 stars
Hopeless Romantic had some really wonderful aspects - I LOVE the incorporation of autism and the personal and familial struggles that go along with that. The characters were fun and had great chemistry. You see a little more of Beck and Levi’s separate struggles, than of their on-page interactions, which sets up really great personal journeys.

My main critique would be that the resolution was rushed. Because I love the story and characters, I just greedily wanted more of them - to savor the HEA more! I’ll be eagerly awaiting book 3 to see if some of these wonderful storylines might get wrapped up there.

Go give this fun, charming, series a try - it’s got so much heart!

I’ve enjoyed all of Marina’s books that I’ve read and I was eager to get my greedy eyes on this one.

I loved Beckett and Levi. They’re both loyal and loving and crazy busy with their responsibilities. I enjoyed getting both of their POVs while they bantered and flirted and reveled in the chemistry they have. There are a good group of secondary characters and they were delightful.

Plot wise, it was nearly all fluff. I expected a lot of angst and spent a good portion of the read expecting the other shoe to drop. There is a bit of conflict, but it’s at the end and resolved quickly. The autism rep was provided a layer I wasn’t expecting and while I wanted a lot more from the ending, it was satisfying.

Overall, it was a cute and quick read. I’ll definitely be reading the rest of the books in the series.

**Huge thanks to Kensington for providing the arc free of charge**

Hopeless Romantic
By Marina Adair

Marina Adairs delivers a lovely romantic read that is perfectly balanced between two main characters whose love life had always been put in the backburner - always sacrificing themselves for their families. I absolutely enjoyed this beautiful story that tugged at my heart strings. Beckett and Levi are just so perfect for each other and I loved their characters, their families and their quest for finding love - finally for these selfless people. Completely relatable as a nurse and caregiver when family obligations always takes priority. Amazing read I enjoyed in the When in Rome series.

Thank you to Netgalley and Kensington Publishing for proving me with this ARC!

I didn't realize this was the second book in a series! I found the story heartwarming and sweet. I really enjoyed the banter from the beginning and found that Beckett and Levi had a lot of chemistry; I especially enjoyed how they worked well, to be honest, and to hold each other accountable. However, I really wish I had read Book 1 first. I think it would've given me better insight into the characters and their history. This book gave us just enough of a recap but I still wish I read Book 1.

Nonetheless, I enjoyed seeing Beckett handle her family dynamic. I found her feelings very relatable (as someone who also has a family that requires extra care). Her insistent that everything is fine, having to drop everything to make pick up another family issue. You really sympathized with her greatly. Levi was also great. His thought-process was nice to read. I loved his relationship with his family members and how the author realistically portrayed him dealing with his grief.

I have a little issue with the pace of the story though. Most of the beginning of the book felt really slow and dragged, not much going on besides highlighting the many family obligations that both Beckett and Levi have to deal with and how they are both so very overwhelmed with it all. The second half picks up but everything starts going too fast. I think a neater finish was needed to entice us to read the next book.

Overall, it was a good read! It had humor and romance. I appreciated how the author brought awareness to autism spectrum disorder.

I wanted to enjoy this as much as book one but it just didn’t compare. I will explain in my review which is pending.

I received a complimentary digital copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an unbiased review.

After having read book one I couldn’t wait for this book to be published. RomeAntically Challenged had me laughing out loud and who couldn’t use a good laugh? This book focuses on Beckett Hayes, Annie Walsh’s best friend, from book one. This book can stand alone but you will want to read the first book for the story of Annie and Emmitt!

The story wasn’t as strong as the first book.
The relationship between Beckett and Levi felt weak and slow, they actually met before but in the beginning it seemed like Beck pegged him as a lady’s man. Levi sees her as a quirky flake who wears mismatched socks and a cape who rides a scooter. Somehow they manage to overlook their initial options to form an unlikely pair.

Both characters have deep emotional baggage which walls them off from other people and asking for help. I enjoyed the story but I don’t think it held together as well as the first book.

Happy Reading, friends!

I should have know when Queen Jill Shalvis writes the blurb that I will love it, but this one genuinely surprised me!

Marina writes a tale of wild, fun, and memorable characters. She throws in all these little pieces, quotes, and tidbits that make the characters really seem real. I laughed out loud at certain parts especially with the Greek grandmother and her "sight".

This book also deals with different kinds of grief, caregiver burnout & trying to carve your way through life despite all our responsibilities. For me, this is very easy to relate to. I have to say Marina nails it as she writes about a woman trying to start a business while taking care of her dad, brother, find love, keep friendships, and more.

Basically, I am not obsessed with this series and I can't wait to go back and read book 1.

Content warnings:

I liked both Levi and Beckett from the last book, so I was very much looking forward to seeing them together. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out as well as I’d hoped. In order to talk about why the book didn’t work for me, there’s a lot of spoilers for the book below.

Beckett and Levi both put parts of their lives on hold in order to care for their families. After her mother left, Beckett assumed the role of caregiver to her father and brother, both on the autism spectrum, while Levi served as the support system for his mother and sister following his father's death and sister's unexpected pregnancy. Neither had been interested in a romantic relationship until Beckett walked into Levi's bar with a chicken and the sparks flew. They just needed to figure out how to make room for someone else in their life and finally put themselves first.

I was charmed by this group of people, when I met them in RomeAntically Challenged, and I fell in love with them all even more this time. As with the last book, the "family" dynamic continued to delight me. I enjoyed the whole Three Men and a Little Lady arrangement and appreciated getting to know Levi better.

Levi came off as the "cool uncle" in the last book, but here, I learned the extent of the years he dedicated to his family. I also learned about what he lost in those transitions, and my heart ached for him.

As much as I felt for Levi, I would triple those emotions for Beckett. There was no doubt how much she loved her family, and she knew they loved her back, but she took on her caregiver role at a time when she still needed someone to care for her. Her childhood was cut short as she assumed her new role. She had to pass up making a life for herself, because she felt an obligation to her family. Because of all these things, it was really wonderful that Levi entered her orbit, because he had a lot of insight into her situation and understood her needs more than most, as their situations were sort of similar.

I hope I am not making this sound like a sob-fest, because it wasn't. The beauty of what Adair did here was that she was able to deliver a story with depth and emotion while keeping it quite light and amusing. As if the comfort chicken wasn't fun enough, the banter between Beckett and Levi was so fun and snappy, as were the dialogs between the three dads. There were also tons of super sweet moments between Beckett and her family, Levi and his family, and Levi and Beckett.

My only complaint is that I felt the ending was a bit rushed. Though not perfect, I liked the direction the story took, and know I will be catching up with these two in the next book. That is probably why the abrupt ending didn't really spoil much for me. I felt the feels, laughed the laughs, and very much enjoyed being part of this couple's HEA journey. I can't wait to return to Rome!

Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I was so excited to see there would be a followup to Romeantically Challenged and it did not disappoint.

I would recommend if you're looking for

-m/f frenemies to lovers
-close proximity
-small town romance
-opposites attract
-plenty of emotional support animals
-don't come a knockin if the boat is a rockin
-slow burn

I love the premise of this series, three men united in their love and raising one little girl. This book concentrates on Levi, our cinnamon roll of an uncle who has spent his life sacrificing for his family. I love his scenes as an uncle, but his scenes with Beckett when he realizes how special she is, and his inner romantic comes out, or he's just sweet to her brother, were just swoon.

But the real rockstar of this book is Beckett. Living with two neurodiverse family members, she has also sacrificed a lot for her family, and her family life juxtaposed with Levi was a really interesting twist in the book. Beckett has a lot of roles in her life, and her advocacy for special needs and helping others was wonderful to read. The book did not have her sacrifice her independence in order to find love, instead it was about both of our MCs carving out what they wanted out of life and finding it in the other.

My only complaint was the book wrapped up rather quickly, I would have loved an epilogue or a longer scene dealing with that final twist. Especially Beckett's story line with her family was dealt with well, but I wish it had been addressed more at the end. While clearly a lead up to Gray's well deserved third book I would have loved to have seen a bit of Beckett and Levi's HEA.

What keeps a dock floating above water? Pier pressure.
& Beckett & Levi sure are feeling a lot of it, with work and family, they never seem to get any time for themselves.

I was SO excited to head back to Rome, Rhode Island for book 2, and hear Levi’s story after the 3 Men & a Baby vibes in the first book. Levi’s world is completely changed when Beckett walks into his bar and rocks his boat.

Beckett doesn’t believe that happily ever afters are for her, instead focusing on the happiness of nearly everyone around her. From taking care of her brother to being the parent to her own father, she has sacrificed much of her time to taking care of them & not enough time for herself.

"That's what love did, stripped away all life's baggage and BS until all that was left was family - vulnerable and pure, embracing each other's imperfections without hesitation or judgment."

I loved how the author made both of our main characters so family-focused, and how important to Beckett the care of her special needs family was.

This small-town romance gives us a little bit of everything we need - fun animal sidekicks, opposites attract relationship with two people who must learn to stop giving all of themselves to others in order to find time to love each other. A slow burn with the perfect amount of steam, you’re sure to fall for this charming romance.

I am anxiously waiting for what I hope will be book 3 about Grayson, and returning to these likable characters that always have such great stories surrounded by love and family!

*Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an copy of this book for review, all opinions are my own*

I wanted to say that I can't talk about the representation of autism in this book, but from the little that I know, I found it very good and very well done.
This book is about family, how sometimes we put other people above us and our happiness, the book talks a lot about it in the view of the two characters.
In addition to talking about loss, grief, overcoming, love, family, responsibilities and happiness.
It's a book that was not quick to read because I found the chapters too long which made the reading seem sluggish but it was a nice nonetheless.
The romance is very cute and sexy at the same time, both characters are incredible and mature a lot during the story, the end I found the resolutions very fast.
But I highly recommend this book and the animals in it.

I am a member of Marina Adair's A-DAIRING Reader group and received a free ARC of Hopeless RomeAntic from NetGalley for an honest review. I can truly say, that I absolutely loved Hopeless RomeAntic the second book in the When in Rome series by Marina Adair. Hopeless RomeAntic is one of the best romantic comedies that I have read recently. Marina Adair has shown that she is a master storyteller and I love her romantic comedies. I love the characters and the setting of Rome, Rhode Island in Hopeless RomeAntic. I absolutely loved every page and could not put it down. I love that Hopeless RomeAntic is narrated from the viewpoint of the main characters. I really enjoy getting the perspective from those characters. I love getting inside their minds and knowing their thoughts and how they really feel. Hopeless RomeAntic is a love at first sight story, even though it took the main characters several years to admit their feelings for one another. It is filled with heartbreaking and heartwarming moments. I love the lighter moments where I find myself smiling and laughing out loud. It is also filled with bittersweet moments that cause me to sigh, say aww to myself with tears filling my eyes . Hopeless RomeAntic is filled with such moments, with so much emotion and so much more, including laughter. It is filled with all those things that we have come to love and expect in romantic comedy, especially the poignant and bittersweet moments that filled this page turner, and the surprise plot-twists. Hopeless RomeAntic is the story of Beckett Hayes, a caregiver for her father, Jeffrey and brother, Thomas, both on the autism spectrum and the owner of her own small business, Consider it Done, a personal concierge service and Levi Rhodes, who runs his family's bar, Crow's Nest and marina. Both Beckett and Levi have always put their family's wants and needs ahead of their own. Beckett is training a chicken to be a emotional support animal for a local girl and heads into the Crow's Nest, to pick up a to-go order, even though the Crow's Nest does not offer take out. Things change that night for her and Levi. The start a relationship, knowing there is a definite end date, Levi is planning on a sailing adventure, sixteen years in the making, one he had planned on taking with his late father before his death. He put his life on hold following the death of his father and then the unplanned pregnancy of his older sister, Michelle with Paisley. I love Levi's relationship with Paisley, and her other two Dads, Gray and Emmitt. I love that Beckett has changed Levi and therefore, changes his relationship with Paisley. I love the set of rules that they establish for their relationship. Levi is one of the first men who takes time with Thomas, and that warms Beckett's heart. Levi admits that he has had feelings for Beckett from the first time he saw her several years ago. My heart broke when Levi got so angry at Beckett for putting her family first, when he was celebrating Emmitt's bachelor party on his boat. I love how the plot twist gets resolved and how Beckett and Levi get the happily ever after that they deserve. Both Beckett and Levi change each other's lives because of their love. My favorite part of the story when both Levi and Beckett change their rules, it was truly a poignant moment when both of the walls that they built around their hearts tumbled down. It was an incredible love story with amazing characters. Once again, Hopeless RomeAntic is filled with all the things that I have come to love and expect in a Marina Adair romantic comedy, and she truly did not disappoint me with Hopeless RomeAntic. Looking forward to reading the next book in the When in Rome series. Highly recommend this incredible page turner.

I had a lot of problems with this book. First, I think you need to read the first book in the series, RomeAntically Challenged, before reading this book as there are a lot of scenes that refer to events that happened in the first book.

I didn't like Levi. He came across as self serving. He says he understands her commitment to her family, but he doesn't like it when she doesn't put him first. Also despite knowing everything Beckett has going on, he hires her to hire and train staff for his bar and he expects her to take care of the bar while he's off at a bachelor party get away. There wasn't one other person in the entire town that couldn't have done that?

He also notices that someone stole a case of high end wine from the bar but doesn't bother to contact the police. Then when the bar is robbed while he is away at the bachelor party, he blames Beckett. He was already having problems with theft prior to that. I hated that it turned out to be his mother who'd taken the wine previously not to mention the $6,000 and family heirloom wine goblets that were "stolen" the night the bar was robbed. It was strange that Levi's friends, Gray and Emmitt, knew Levi's mom had the items, but the police didn't. And when Levi spoke to her about it, her reasoning was her name was still on the business license as founder and owner, then she berates him for hiring new staff without asking her permission even though she's had nothing to do with the business throughout the entire book. I couldn't stop wondering why wouldn't she tell him that she was taking things? It made no sense and seemed to be a plot device used to create the black moment where the hero and heroine break up.

I wasn't a fan of Beckett either. She came across as a doormat. I understand her commitment to her family, I'm not questioning that. She already has so much on her plate between trying to care for her brother and father and growing her business, not to mention training emotional support animals, but when her friend more or less insists Beckett plan her wedding, Beckett agrees even though she's not at all sure how she'll manage to do it and do it well. She should have said she couldn't do it, but she didn't want to disappoint her friend so she agrees. And what kind of friend would ask you to plan her wedding when she already knows how overextended you are just trying to take care of your family and your business? An other example is when Levi jumps all over her for leaving someone else to lock up the bar and it was "robbed." She doesn't even tell him that Thomas was missing, that it took 58 search and rescue volunteers and the local fire department to locate him and that was why she left someone else to lock up instead she just stands there and lets Levi unload on her.

Finally Beckett is training a rooster named Gregory Pecker as an emotional support animal for a little girl. The first couple of jokes about his name were cute, but as the jokes continued throughout the book, it got old fast.

I'm not going to read the first book or any other books in the series that may be published.

I really wanted to love this book. I even ordered the first book in the series (which feature is different characters, in case you're wondering) so that I wouldn't miss anything when I read this second book in the series. Basically, the only things that are similar between the two books are that they are set in the same place, and minor characters may reappear.

The first book was interesting because it had an Asian American protagonist, but I found it hard to keep reading with the constant sex-related humor. I love humor in romantic comedies, and Sophie Kinsella is one of my favorite authors, but sex-related humor isn't really my cup of tea. Another disappointment when reading the series was that it doesn't actually take place in Rome, Italy. There's a "funny" explanation for this that I won't get into.

Even though I didn't enjoy the first book, I decided to give the second book a chance, because maybe the author had improved? I was turned off immediately from the beginning of the book with the "cock" puns (relating to roosters). As someone who really reads romantic comedies for the humor, I just didn't get this author's sense of humor, but I'm sure many others will enjoy it.

Thank you to GoodReads and the publisher for giving me a copy in exchange for an honest review!

Hopeless Romantic is inspiring, flirty, and funny...all adding up to a wonderful book. Continuing with characters introduced in Romantically Challenged, this story is about Levi and Beckett. Beckett was left at age 16 to care for her high spectrum autistic father and low spectrum younger brother. This responsibility has left her little time for personal relationships, except with her girlfriends and the service animals she trains. She basically is shy and no longer believes in love for herself. Levi has his own guilts trying to keep his father’s business interests afloat, his Greek mother’s endless calls for help satisfied, and care for his sister’s teenage daughter...as one of Paisley’s three dads. Ms. Adair has written an engrossing story about Beckett and Levi finding their way out of an emotional maze of responsibilities that will inspire, educate, and entertain. I voluntarily reviewed an advance copy of this book from NetGalley. Most highly recommend.

I just love Rome, Rhode Island and this group of dads finding their way through parenting, life, and love. Levi and Beckett's story of letting others in and letting them help and recognizing life for what it was is so relatable and real. Their slow burn was worth the wait, but the end felt so hurried that I think I still have question. I can't wait for Grey's book to get a little more of each character and to finally find his love.

A nice sexy and sweet romance story. Realistic depiction of being a caregiver which is not common which makes real caregivers feel like they are inadequate for not thinking happy thoughts all the time

Hopeless Romantic is the 2nd book in the When in Rome romance duology by Marina Adair, that is Rome, Rhode Island. I didn't read the first book, but this reads perfectly as a standalone story. Beckett and Levi have both put their lives on hold to take care of others. Beckett is taking care of her father and brother, who is on the autism spectrum after the death of her mother. She runs her own business, and trains service dogs when she has time. Levi gave up a sailing scholarship, sixteen years ago, to support his mother and sister, who was a single mom, after the death of his father. He ran the family marina and bar while being a surrogate father to his niece. Both are so busy keeping things afloat that romance hasn't entered their minds. Even though they have lived in the same town and known each other, the day Becket walks into Levi's bar to get a to-go order, sparks fly. Can they resist the attraction they have to one another, or might they finally take time to do something for themselves.

I really enjoyed this romance story. Beckett, aka Beck, and Levi are great characters. They are both so caring, unselfish, kind characters, although Levi has a rough side at times. Both had given up so much when they were relatively young and became caregivers when their lives were really just beginning. I enjoyed seeing their relationship grow, the humorous banter and the arguments over the "comfort chicken". (You have to read this one to learn about that). There is a lot of family in this book, and it's not always positive, but what family is happy with each other all the time. Beck's dad needed to stand on his own two feet, and I was glad to see Beck stand up to him, finally. This is a romance, but it is also a story of family, love, caring, finding your place, and following your dreams (even if it takes longer than you planned). The ending was a bit rushed, and it seemed like it was a set up for another book, but alas, this seems to be the complete series. I enjoyed this story and now want to go back and read RomeAntically Challenged to read about Levi's story.

3.5 stars

I loved the first book in this series and couldn't wait to begin Hopeless Romantic!

The premise is interesting. Overworked and underappreciated Beckett Hayes who has a dad with Asperger syndrome who is high functioning and a musical savant, and an autistic brother, trains service animals, runs her own business, and does not have time to date. Levi Rhodes, is left running his family's marina and restaurant after the death of his father, then his sister is pregnant, then she dies, and he needs to be a father figure for his niece. Both characters are busy, busy, busy, and have put their own needs behind the needs of others.

I really wanted to love this book as much as the first. Unfortunately I didn't. The first part of the book dragged for me. Levi and Beck didn't have any connection that I could see/feel in the beginning, then, BAM...They were thrown together to plan a wedding and everything worked. I felt the ending was rushed and too many tendrils were left hanging. I hope the next book in the series can tie those tendrils into bows!

It wasn't a total loss since we did get to see some of the characters from the first book and got caught up with them. Paisley in high school? Wow...her 'dads' have done a bang up job with her. I have to say, 5 stars for Gregory Pecker!

If you're looking for something light and quick, this will work for you. The dialogue is good and except for the pacing, and that might just be me, a nice read. I do love the authors writing style and will absolutely read the next in this series.

I want to commend Ms. Adair for speaking to neurodevelopmental disorders. This is not a topic that is brought up in contemporary romance and many people in all walks of life are dealing with these issues.

Hopeless Romantic is book #2 in the When In Rome series. In my opinion this book is best read in series order.

Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC.

I read RomeAntically Challenged and enjoyed it, so I was excited for this book!

Right off the bat, I felt like there may have been a miss in the title. I expected it to have the pun like the first title did and be Hopeless RomeAntic, but I'm sure there was a reason for that.

Honestly, I really enjoyed the first 80% of the book and would've given it a higher rating had it not gone off the rails. The sex scene was when it started to go downhill for me. I just can't take it seriously when the scene includes any of these: "BINGO" "hole in one" or referring to genitalia as pastries. The content itself was a lot, and it was like 7% of the book. I know these scenes can be challenging to write, but Adair is so great at building plot—I'd rather have had a little more story in place of half of this very long scene.

I got incredibly confused after the sex scene because there was a jump in time in the story, but how much time was left uncertain. There had been no reference to Beckett learning how to manage the restaurant or why; the story just kind of skipped without much explanation. I also felt like the robbery resolution was lacking, and we never got around to finding out who was behind the previous thefts. And what happened with the wedding? I wish the author had spent more time at the end of the book resolving the conflicts and tying up loose ends.

I definitely enjoyed the first book in the series much more, but this was an easy read with enjoyable main characters. Beckett and Levi were both sweet and their chemistry was evident. Maybe there will be a third book with Gray as the main?

Wonderful series, but then I also really like the author's Sugar, Ga series too. Strangely the last book that I read, also had a main character that is "on the spectrum". This one has one character that is autistic, another has Asperger's and the story explores how the other family members are affected by it. My next door neighbor has a child (now a young adult) with severe Autism and we have seen up close how hard these conditions are on the family members, ripping apart marriages, but also inculcating a sense of kindness, patience and empathy with the siblings. My neighbor has had to take the county school board to court many times to get her child the education that he needs. (She has won, every time).

Beckett Hayes may be a hopeless romantic, but when her mother deserted the family, leaving Beckett and her brother Thomas in the car, while she went into the grocery store and then ran,
she left 16 year old Beckett in charge, to juggle all those responsibilities that she couldn't or wouldn't. Beckett found the only way she could handle it all was, to create her own business as a jobber. But there is just so much she can juggle without running herself ragged.

We met Levi in the previous book. He also has put his life on hold for years, He and his father had planned a sailing trip, but then his father died and his mother and sister needed him to run the family business. Then his sister Michelle got pregnant, and she needed to help raise her daughter ....

Levi and Beckett are perfect for each other, if they could learn to every now and then, put their needs first. Read how they learn to do that.

I read an ARC from NetGalley.com. This is my unbiased and voluntary review.
