Hindu Philosophy for an Inquisitive Mind: Simple answers to life’s fundamental questions through the lens of Advaita Vedanta

Rate this book
A book that explores both the 'Whats' and the 'Whys' of the philosophical ideas contained in Hinduism. A lucid, logical and practicable description of the journey through Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga and Gyan Yoga. This book will appeal to you for two particular reasons - 1. It does a wonderful job of distilling the philosophical concepts from the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita, and other ancient scriptures and puts them in a way that is very relevant in today's times. 2. This book makes an honest attempt at explaining the Hindu philosophical theories in a very logical and well-reasoned manner rather than putting them as gospels. To achieve this, a Q&A structure has been employed where the Seeker is unwilling to take anything as gospel and thus asks questions until satisfied. The Guide answers these questions drawing from the various teachings of the Hindu philosophy. The conversation between the Seeker and the Guide takes you through a fascinating journey of Hindu philosophy bringing out the key principles and their relevance in modern times. You will be offered very practical and well-reasoned arguments behind the various teachings. In addition, throughout this book, you will find relevant quotations from ancient Hindu scriptures and commentaries by some esteemed Hindu monks. Filled with timeless wisdom, don't be surprised if you find yourself referring back this book time and again all through your life journey! Hope you enjoy the journey of a seeker...

Firstly, I must say that the book is a gem. When, I started, I had my doubts. I have to say that the author has shown great command over the subject and managed its flow very well throughout the book. Another thing, before I write further; whenever I read a book, I start critically. With a prejudice, that author must be having some motives. He/She must be thinking to prove a point (his/her point), with direct or indirect benefits accruing to him in any manner whatsoever. So, before knowledge of the book reaches my mind, it must be compared with various other data sets already present and sieved for genuine matter. As always, even though I began reading this book with a healthy dose of scepticism and all through the book I added many critical points; at the end, I have to say that things were very different. For example, when I started reading the book, I was quite critical of “… not in believing but in being and becoming ….”. I thought it was an escapist argument. You can’t prove a point. So, say, it’s not only about believing but in being and becoming. But, it is not. Why? One, you have to gain knowledge by reading this book and two, you have to realise it yourself. When I read through such stuff in the book, I also realised that the same is true for any knowledge acquired since childhood. Knowledge has to be realised, then it becomes your being. Also, when it occurred to me, that we are known as “Human Beings”, my mind was blown away. So much that we are yet to know. The way the book’s ending chapter is framed, it’s superb. Words can serve only that much and then it’s your own journey. I think I was already on this journey. Now, I have the course correction and stronger steps. All said and done, it’s an outstanding book, not only to understand and inquire about Hindu philosophy but to “become yourself”. Not at an advance age, but I have read Swami Vivekananda and Swami Paramhansa Yogananda during my formative years. I have also read something about philosophies of other religions and of people during the renaissance. But, this one is a remarkable work, which people will recognize maybe not immediately but in years and decades to come. This goes inside your head, comes out, goes in again; tests you, challenges you, shakes you up. Will it become my part? I think so. I am deeply thankful to this book as it has given me answers to many questions, which have been troubling me for years. In the end, a very special acknowledgement of the thorns example – one has to use the thorn of knowledge to remove the thorn of ignorance and after realising true self, throw both the thorns away. This book blew my mind. And it was not an easy task. One may bet!!

Hindu Philosophy for an Inquisitive Mind is a thoughtful and accessible introduction to some of life’s deepest questions. It explores ideas from Advaita Vedanta and invites the reader to think about happiness, suffering, duty, and the true nature of the self. The author makes it clear that this is not just another religious book. Instead, it is a reflection on Sanatana Dharma as a universal, logical, and practical philosophy that can guide everyday life.

The book uses a conversational style. There is a dialogue between Aham, the ego driven self, and Brahman, the guide who represents the higher self. This structure helps the reader connect with the questions raised, because Aham asks the exact doubts we often have. This includes questions like whether desires are necessary for progress and why we should consider letting go of attachments even if they bring joy. The replies given by Brahman draw from ancient teachings and lived wisdom. They feel calm, patient, and rooted in clarity.

The writing style is simple and smooth. The author himself mentions that the language is intentionally easy to follow, though the concepts are deep and layered. He encourages readers to pause, reflect, and relate their own experiences as they go through the chapters. This makes the reading experience both personal and meditative.

The book provides concise, logically coherent and lucid exposition of core concepts of Hindu philosophy. The abstruse Hindu concepts such as Karma/ Nishkam Karma, Dharma, Maya, Moksha, Ego-self & true Self, Brahman etc are explained with admirable clarity.

Reader will find answers to intriguing questions such as ‘Who am I ?’, ‘What is the purpose of life?’, ‘And ultimate goal of life?’ , ‘ What is the cause of sufferings in life?’, What should be approach to our work/ duty in life?’ among others.

Solutions to these are provided by various paths viz. Karma Yoga, Gyan Yoga and Bhakti Yoga which are explained cogently to understand how these paths can free the follower from all sufferings caused by attachments and desires. Ultimately these paths lead to Moksha, a state of eternal peace and bliss and realization of one’s true Self which is Pure Consciousness.

Very well researched and written content. Out of 12 chapters, found the last one a bit heavy as it criss crosses many aspects. But, once you read the entire book you'll realise that it was required. It would attract & affect specially those who hv no detailed idea about Indian history/culture n specially thought process which has depth, logic and solid reasoning. I liked the overall narration, references from Gita/Vivekanand/RKP etc. The best part about the book is that it helps in highlighting/exposing what is not right that is either happening in ur life or you are letting it continue. So, in a way it provides a 3rd party perspective n pushes u to apply corrective action (eye opener sort of stuff). I am happy that the author has achieved so much wisdom that he could gather it in this form n shared through his 1st book 👍👍👍👍. My best wishes to him as an author.

Hindu philosophy is an ocean and one need to go right till the trench to discover one's true self. "Hindu Philosophy for an Inquisitive Mind" has captured, what can be an abstract concept often explained through difficult words and complex language, in a simple and structured way. The chapters are arranged logically and written in a language that is easy to understand and yet keeps the essence of philosophy intact.
The Q&A format to capture discussion between “Aham” and “Brahman” helped me to introspect and reflect on my own behaviour, intrinsic nature, and motivations. It gave me glimpse of my true self! This book is a great introduction to concepts of Hindu philosophy - like first swimming lessons before you enter the deep ocean.

I would describe it as one of my favourite books. Siddhart Bhaskar is a gem. Really liked the writing style, and the elaborate discussion on the intricate matters of existence and Dharma. What intrigued me the most is the Maya and Avidya chapter. It clearly justifies the existence of a far superior power over the superficial materialistic things for which we live. The divine reality is present in all living beings and is eternal and full of bliss.

If you are a non believer or a believer, if you follow this religion or that religion, this book will certainly be interesting and informative for everyone.
I myself am a yoga teacher and a vipassana meditator. I am amazed at how simply and logically the author explains several concepts of Hinduism which can sometimes be very complicated and uninteresting for a common person.
I will certainly recommend this easy to read book (under 100 pages) to anyone who wants to know about the key concepts of Hindu philosophy.
Thank you.

Would definitely recommend (already have) this book. This book is an example of how the ancient Hindu philosophy is relevant even in today's world as it explains how this wisdom can answer today's pressing problems through the route of three Yogs.
Especially for the westerners having an inquisitive mind, this book helps gain a good understanding of Hinduism and its basic principles.

Spiritual books are not typically my genre, but the author's writing style in this book has sparked a deep interest in Hindu philosophy. The nuanced and multifaceted realm of philosophy is eloquently simplified, offering logical and practical insights into life's unanswered questions that often trouble us. What sets this book apart is its ability to serve as a metaphor for an intense dialogue with the higher power!

In this book, ‘Hindu Philosophy for an Inquisitive Mind’, Author Siddharth Bhaskar encapsulates the ocean in a pot by brilliantly capturing the most significant concepts of Hinduism and explaining them in a minimalistic yet comprehensive manner. From the vastness of the concepts covered in this book, I can fairly imagine the kind of efforts the author might have put in while writing this book. I was quite impressed and moved by the book, so I reached out to the writer to express my gratitude. He seems quite well-versed and sorted in life. Just like his book, he has the simplest of solutions to the biggest of problems. This book completely converted my convictions and led me to a deeper awareness, understanding, and appreciation for my life. Anyone looking to understand what it means to live should give this book a read.

Enriching and riveting!
This book is amazing and so enlightening.. It is based in certain philosophical ideas which lets one dive deep into beliefs and what could be the ultimate goal.. one can delve into details and rummage through a sea of ideas, but with much more clarity and maybe to find some sort if basic directions. The book is thought-provoking and one may find meaning to something which either they didn't know or what they knew was wrong! Concepts are provided and the references made are indeed great. One can think about some points from a different angle as they go through the book.. It is well structured, non-preachy and with rhetoric and rationale.. loved it and thoroughly enjoyed reading ..

In the world where more and more people see things in extremes (my way or highway), this book is a good reminder of how Hinduism (Most likely other religions too in introspection) is open to various ways of living one's life in pursuit of happiness as long as the intent is right, thoughts are inclusive and actions are just. The beauty of the book is keeping the narration simple for such a complex subject and stoking the reader's reflections which make the entire process of understanding personal. I look forward to using this to help me through my first conversations about Hindu philosophy with my child one day.

Call me a geek, but I am truly a nerd when it comes to subjects like Mythology, religion and spirituality. This book does an amazing job at bringing together the ideas from Gita, Upanishads and other ancient scriptures. The point of views are so logical and very well argued, It seemed to me that Siddharth Bhaskar has truly lived each and every line that he wrote.
This book inclined me towards the Philosophical side of Hindusim once again. It taught me the significance of Karma and the role of humans in this mortal world. Massive respect to the author! Loads of love from Bhubaneswar!! :)

This viewpoint on Hindu philosophy is really novel. I never thought a book explaining a spiritual concept would use such a critical thinking method. The author challenges you to think, consider, and comprehend rather than asking you to believe. The book provides a welcome break from dogmatic spiritual writing by examining ideas such as the nature of the self, Purusharth (purpose of existence), Good and Evil, Guna (Innate Qualities), Maya (illusion), etc. through a lens of reason and logic. Fantastic book from cover to cover...

The book “Hindu Philosophy for an Inquisitive Mind” by Siddharth Bhaskar is well written book on the basic Hindu Philosophy and belief for a novice. Wrote as a conversation between atman (the reader) and Brahman (the preacher), takes the reader through most common questions and clears the basic misconceptions of the basic tenants of Hinduism and “exploring the key ideas contained within the Vedic philosophies or Āstika”(Loc: 58-59). Though “This book attempts to introduce and explore the common and fundamental themes that run across most of the ancient Vedic philosophies (Āstika).” It should be noted that “this book leans towards the philosophical ideas contained in Advaita Vedanta” (Loc:67-69) which states “Aham Brahmasmi”.

The book is divided into 12 chapters including introduction.

The chapters 2 to 8 explains karma yoga, clarifying common confusions like what are attachments & desire, how even a good deeds will cause suffering and misery (chapter 2). Does Nishkāma Karma mean indifferent towards the work being done, or how can one get motivated to do work if he is not suppose to desire any of the rewards and recognitions (chapter 3 & 4) or what is law of karma (chapter 5 & 6) concluding how one can achieve moksha through Karma yoga in chapter 8.

The chapter 9 explains bhakti yoga. In this chapter the author very well explains how devotee through his faith on Personal God or Ishta Devta with the intention of fulfilling his worldly desirer like wealth, health, success, luck, happiness, etc. would eventually detaches from worldly desires to attain the highest state of love and feels himself as a part of the Supreme God or Brahman thus attaining salvation.

The chapter 10 and 11 talks about Gana yoga dispelling many of the myths and confusion regarding Māyā and Avidya (Chapter 10) and Guna (Chapter 11). The final chapter True Self: Brahman explaining the nature of consciousness.

I felt the karma yoga and bhakti yoga are very well explained but the Gana yoga is not so well delt with and the author has completely missed Raja yoga. Overall, this is a good book for beginners and the examples that are given are more of modern day to day examples like Doctor, nurse, pick-pocketer etc thus able to connect the old philosophy to modern day world.
