Breathe Between the Lines

Rate this book
When a young woman is shot in an armed robbery, a book she leaves behind writes itself randomly into the lives of strangers and friends who breathe between the lines of a far greater story already written and, they realise, not random at all. This is the first novel by bestselling nonfiction author and well-loved speaker, Dalene Reyburn. She and her family make their home under African skies. This beautifully written book gives new meaning to "six-degrees-of-separation"! Everyone reading this book will be able to identify with a character or situation, and very uniquely to South Africa, yet the world as well. I loved how the author was able to very gracefully switch between provinces, countries, cultures and especially age groups in terms of language and life-experiences. A page-turner, yet I didn't want the story to end!

Although this is not a genre I normally read, I found it rather beautiful and meaningful. Whilst the narrative is gentle and the style relaxed and at times quite lyrical, underlying the story are deeply felt pieces of wisdom in which I felt the sincerity of the author's own voice speaking through her charming characters.
I loved the golden thread, the coffee motif, the strong image of the bible linking each cameo portrait in a very clever way.
If you are looking for hope and encouragement this is a book for you. If you are wanting a respite from the ugliness of the word at the moment, relax put your feet up and enjoy a uniquely South African lens on a story that spans continents and nationalities told with warmth and humour.
I think this is also very suitable for older teens and young adults.

Please note: I read the paperback (which is currently not an option here), not the kindle edition.

"Breathe between the lines" enlivens a genre that is often too exclusively Christianese, and I think it manages to avoid the cheesiness that makes this genre hard to stomach for many. The prose is beautiful and the characters genuine. It will definitely encourage and enrapture the target audience, but more than that I think it is actually "safe" to recommend to non-Christians or those from more traditional denominations who seek to understand what their more charismatic friends or family members are on about. This is a keenly observed, deeply empathic portrait of the spiritual experience of the contemporary Christian church with a clever narrative that interweaves the stories of the people you may meet there.

This uniquely South African story took me on a journey. I cried and laughed in equal parts, and absolutely loved the way this story exemplified the grace of God.

What a beautiful read, reminding you at every turn that God has a plan and He is faithful to weave together every detail. It's a novel that makes you want to revive your Bible reading plan like never before. From the first page to the last you are mesmerized by the idea of freedom- that we are free in Christ, free to run after Him, free to live today for Him and free to pursue every dream He has for us. Such an inspired novel.

Wow! Don't miss this one!

Dalene Reyburn weaves an odyssey, a journey of seeking and finding, battles fought and freedom won. All of it tangled about a battered book's journey halfway around the world and back again. A master storyteller she draws you into the very heartbeat of this tale of redemption.

Excellent

An intriguing stony beautifully told and wonderfully South African. God's goodness and Grace on every page. Hopefully this is just the beginning.
