After being held captive for over eight years by a brutal, vicious monster, Olivia Byrd escaped, only to find everything she once knew, gone.
Scarred, but not broken she fought to overcome the horror of her ordeal, and find the life that had been stolen from her for so long. But with the shadows of her past still chasing her she faces a long and terrifying journey to find the happiness and peace she longs for.
This time though, she is not alone. With help, she has found the embrace of a welcoming home, an adoring family, and the four guys who surround her with the love and safety she so desperately needs. Together Olivia and the men she has fallen for have begun to heal and have found strength in each other.
Darkness still lingers though. With the guy's pasts still haunting them, Olivia's memories resurfacing and threatening to shake her world once again, and The Shadow close by in search of his next victim, can they all hold on to what they have built or will it be what finally breaks them all?
This is a reverse harem story with one woman and four loving, protective men. It is the second book of three in the Pieces of Us series. Trigger warning - this book touches on some dark topics, including kidnapping, sexual abuse, violence and more.
Have you ever had a really bad hankering for something that gradually intensifies until you lose control and you do whatever you have to do to get this magical item? Only after finally getting your hands on it, it just falls flat. It’s not nearly what you were expecting, hoping or dying for. That’s been this series for me this far. It’s everything I should love but I just don’t. The entire story-line is just too hard to fathom being real and everything is just too perfect. By this I mean, the heroine is thrust into life with this perfect family, with perfect men who immediately care and obsess over her. The men and her all have harrowing pasts but that’s perfect as it brings them all together! The men have a perfect, nice and accepting family (foster/adoptive parents) who are both hard working, extremely wealthy and also completely in love with the heroine. They of course even buy her a car when she’s 18. The men are just too good & don’t push her for sex and say if she’s never ready they’re fine with that, they just love her and want to be with her. 😑 Oh and of course after graduation they spirit her away to a home they’ve bought just for them all. 🤦🏽♀️ Why is this all bugging me so much lol?? At the end of the last book she’s kidnapped and tortured by a new psycho serial killer and then in this book her Shadow does find her and take her again. Two psychos, really?.?.? Of course she’s rescued, saved, babied and then somehow even manages to graduate highschool. I’ve blabbered on all this because she was 8 when she was taken and found at 17. She’s had 9 years of living in total silence and darkness but she’s adapted to the outside world in no time, I’ll estimate just about a year of being on the outside again, and she has even fallen in love with multiple men after suffering years of abuse by a man. She magically understands social nuances and is a body language expert knowing exactly how to communicate as an adult?.? Her vocabulary is even surprisingly vast given her age at the time of being taken. The one thing believable is all her tantrums where she just carelessly runs off as if that’s smart with her kidnapper still out there 🤦🏽♀️ She’s had no education any of those years but managed even with two kidnappings and injuries in a year graduate high school?! Come on already!!! There’s just too much that doesn’t add up.
I’m going to stop the series here sadly. There’s an accomplice out there somewhere that I’m sure will come up in the next book but I’m good with stopping here. It ends with another HFN and that’s good enough for me. I’d also classify this as fairly clean as there’s zero sex and only one intimate scene where the heroine kinda loses it and dry humps one of the men fully clothed lol. Maybe I’ll try these books again someday but for now they were just too unbelievable.
I think I should have stopped after reading book 1. Book 1 did end with everything nicely tied up, although The Shadow wasn't found yet.
This book got too repetitive because things keep happening to Olivia and she keeps spiraling then trying to come back, and although this is realistic, when it happens in fiction it's no less exhausting and frustrating than when it happens in real life. Over and over again we have her thinking about how she has put her guys and her new family in danger and is causing them so much worry. Over and over again people are telling her how strong she is. Over and over again we have the guys beating themselves up for not taking better care of her and swearing never to let her out of their sight again. Seriously, it gets old.
Several things did not add up in this book. If Chris's body was "mainly just a skeleton", how could an autopsy discover "signs of nicks from stab wounds"? What victim, when faced with her attacker, would tell him, "The police will be here any minute, you'll be caught if you don't run now"? For that matter, why didn't she just jump into the car with Evie and lock them both in? That was a real TSTL moment. How could Olivia have "a generous pair of boobs" when she had been malnourished for eight years, which would cause delayed onset of puberty and prevent her body from developing? Why do all the adults think it's a good idea for her to go to school when she still can't deal well with crowds and sudden loud noises? Why didn't she use her cellphone when she was kidnapped? She should have had it with her. It also made no sense for the kidnapper to still be after Olivia if he had already found a substitute. If he were obsessed with Olivia, he wouldn't have deviated and taken another little girl. Why have the police not yet tried to discover who owns the two cabins? Presumably that's one of the first things you'd check when you have a crime scene but don't know the identity of the killer. How can Olivia be so tired after school that she can barely spar with Kyle, then the next second be all animated and thoroughly enjoying the rides at a winter carnival?
Overall it was disappointing after book 1. I don't know if I want to read book 3. I'm really tired of reading of Olivia getting kidnapped and punched and kicked around.
So if you have read Handful of Shattered Pieces then you know the story of Olivia, Liv, and how she was held by The Shadow and abused for eight years. Having escaped she found comfort in a family. A family of different boys who needed to find a place to land just like she did. There she found some peace and love. Never expecting to fall for Kade, Kyle, Matt and Cole. They became her strength and her anchor. Here in Shadows of Shattered Souls Liv is starting to find her place. She is getting stronger physically and mentally every day. She is taking steps to not be afraid of every shadow, loud noises. She is also learning to fight back. Also her memory is starting to come back, of how she escaped and whose blood she had all over her. But her boys are not the only one watching Liv.
I was so engrossed in book one, finishing it in one reading, and actually re-reading twice. I just love the story of Liv and her guys. These stories just get me in the heart. Ones where something bad happens to them and they have to find their strength and overcome, set themselves free. Liv is doing just that, she is finding her strength, actually finding that she had it all along, she just did not know it. She fights so hard for herself and the ones she loves. In book two you get to see her grow, and become such a total bad a@@. Guys you will be so proud of her.
The guys, man they are just as protective, if not more so, than the first book. Each one is perfect for Liv just how she needs them. I also love how she puts them in their place a time or two. She is definitely learning to spread her wings.
There is some triggers in this book, that does deal with abuse, sexual and physical. So be warned on that. There is a lot happening in this book, more action and suspense. But I will say I love both of them the same. There is a slight cliffy but really just a lead into book three. Which I really need like now!! I would so recommend this book guys, Honestly one of the best books this year.
I have been waiting for this book for months and it was so worth the wait! This one picks up with her coming home from the hospital after what happened in book 1!!!!
Olivia is back home with her new family and her men! This one BROKE me as good at the first one did!! Her guys are helping her heal more and more! And I am so glad we get more of a look into the guy’s past and their trauma in this one!!!
This one is definitely an emotional roll coaster!! Broke my heart over and over I love Olivia and her guys!!
I cannot wait for book 3 Healing Shattered Hearts!!!
I love that all the books in this series are already out because after the heartbreaking story of the first book, and the continuation of this one, I’m absolutely excited that (and impatient with completing this review) I can start the 3rd book.
This one picked up right where the first left off (thank goodness!). We slowly see Olivia’s growth, not just from whats she’s been through those 8 years, but the trauma of having it done again by a deranged, unsuccessful time traveling, murderer. It’s beautiful to see Olivia’s strength coming back to her, especially since she’s been through so much.
Normality is important for Olivia and just as much as she pushes herself, her family also supports her in her quest to heal. Grant and Keira are the perfect substitute parents. I know that Olivia’s biological parents must be resting peacefully knowing that Olivia found such loving, caring people. I’m happy they played such a big role in this book too.
Kade, Kyle, Cole, and Matt are amazing sons, and men, also being perfect in their partnership with Olivia. The intimate times moving at a snell’s pace for Olivia’s comfort would usually get me impatient, but the story is so good, their love so strong, that my smut addicted brain didn’t even notice that we haven’t had a sex scene yet!
Even Xander is the perfect best friend.
Olivia will need all of their support as The Shadow makes a reappearance, and a little girl, looking just like Olivia, is taken.
Yaas this was such a good book, i really liked the second book as well. I liked how we could see The mc Olivia grow and be stronger in both mind and body. I rooted for her when she would not hide for The school that she dating 4 guys. I feel so annoyed when people do that in some books, like no that will Not help at all. I want more answers To who The shadow man was and why he did those things To Olivia and all The other victims. And also some more info about that Dude who shot The shadow man. I loved when we got To see how strong she has gotten when she fighted back and kicked his shadowing butt, ugly bitch And OMG that bitch ass May from school, she was sooo annoying and i just wanted someone To actually talk some serious shit with her so she stops , tit punch her and scare her so much that she don’t dare To anything To Olivia again
I love this series. I seriously cannot wait for the next and last book. The amount of growth Livy has made in this book from the first is amazing. I can’t wait to see who she’s become in the third. The guys are great too. And her family wonderful. Loved it!
I absolutely love this series and even though there's one book left I know I'll want more. It's such a heart breaking and yet also heart warming read. In one breathe your choked up and begging for things to be ok and in another breathe your heart is filled with love and joy for to burst before cruelly being taken away again. The big that guarantees a smile is reading the sassy small persons bit, she is so funny bless her, her little quotes throughout the book just make me chuckle. I desperately want livy to give Grant a cuddle, I ache for that sweet moment of tenderness. I know with book one a few reviews were very much the timeline doesn't work. Yes there are a few minor discrepancies with dates and how speedy a recovery livy would make but firstly it's a book and there are no rules, secondly I see the guys as livys security blanket, they make her feel safe in a way no-one else can, she essentially saw kindness and kindred spirits in that they are also broken and then latched on regardless of the fact that she was abused by a man. I can't wait for book 3, I wish I knew more about the author so I could go and stalk her but I know for indie authors readers can be a bit aggressive towards authors so I don't blame her for wanting to stay anonymous. I also noticed several errors within the book but I'm assuming the author doesn't have a massive network of beta readers to help point out wording mistakes, spelling errors etc. I love this series, I love that the guys are broken too and I love that together they are all overcoming their pasts slowly but together. This book is about survival and hope and moving forward.
This second part really pulls out the emotions. There were several times where I found tears leaking out while reading and I can count on one hand how many books have brought me to tears. Still, I wouldn't call this a sad book. Olivia's strength and growth in this book was very uplifting to watch. There was also quite a bit of action and intrigue to really grasp your attention and keep you engaged. While there will be a third book coming (which I'll be keeping an eye out for) I sincerely appreciate that the author was kind and didn't leave us on a cruel cliff hanger. There is a satisfying conclusion in this story and the beauty of these characters and their relationships is plenty enough to draw us in to see how the story wraps up in part three.
This book has been long anticipated, I was worried it was not going to live up to the first one.
It exceeded expectations!
Huge triggers in this book, much more than the first book. Livia struggles a lot, totally understandable for the years of abuse and torture. Her relationship with the harem grows and changes. There are first dates, first intimacies, school, kidnappings, ballet, and battles fought and overcome.
This book is intense, emotional and will make you smile and cry and connect to much to Livia and the story, it will feel like you are right there with them.
It appears there will be a book 3, though the book did NOT leave on a cliffhanger.
After falling in love with the first book and rereading it several times, this was a welcome followup. Yes, its overly dramatic, but that is what I like about it. It doesn't let up and just throws the MC into situation after situation. Once you start reading this, you won't stop so make sure you have plenty of time to finish.
I found myself smiling so much reading this instalment as the guys are all wonderful! It's a hard road to Livy's happy ever after but I'm so hopeful! Get ready for smiling and crying in this series!! Excellent contemporary RH
Imagine my surprise when I saw the book come out earlier than expected! I love Olivia's growth in this book. It was slow, strong and also felt realistic. I also more of her first dates with the men! Can't wait for the next one!
This is one of the best books/series I have ever ready. It had me captivated and wanting more. I had to put it down to regather my emotions to read through the tears. 10/10 would recommend.
Representation: Hispanic Hero, Gay Side Characters
Overall: 3.5-stars
The Heroine, Olivia (finally) starts therapy in Shadows of Shattered Souls. Olivia has a severe anxiety attack from her PTSD that demonstrates she needs to talk to someone who can give her healthy coping mechanisms. Olivia's PTSD and her attempts to cope with her anxiety and nightmares continue to be a focus in this book, which I appreciated. It's only been a few months (I think) since she was discovered, so I like that the author isn't ignoring the trauma of being held captive for 8 years.
The suspenseful plot of Shadows of Shattered Souls is centred around Olivia's kidnapper, The Shadow. It becomes clear as the book progresses that he hasn't forgotten about Olivia, and he wants her back. There's also a local 9-year-old girl missing; it's unknown whether The Shadow kidnapped her in hopes of replacing Olivia.
I loved how Shadows of Shattered Souls deepened Olivia's relationships with her foster family and boyfriends. The author also took the time to delve into Matt and Kyle's family histories. But, I'm still waiting for some backstory on Kade (the cop) and Cole (he goes to high school with Olivia). And I'm still getting Kyle and Kade mixed up! RH authors, if you have two men in the harem with similar personalities, please make their names start with a different letter (and none of that Jason and Mason stuff either).
My largest complaint about Shadows of Shattered Souls is the high school of Olivia, Cole, and Matt. I understand they go to school with some incredibly rich and entitled kids. However, I would have loved to see the novel differentiate from the stereotypical RH high school experience; Olivia should have the opportunity to develop healthy friendships with girls! However, there's only one girl Olivia talks to in this book, and she's, of course, the head cheerleader who starts to bully Olivia after discovering Olivia is dating Cole (who the cheerleader likes). Also, the fact that one of Olivia's classmates threatens to sexually assault her in their high school, in front of witnesses, seemed absurd. I want an RH high school romance to depict a realistic high school situation, please! Or, at minimum, a high school situation where every single person is not bullying or out to get the Heroine.
I loved how, despite the drama and suspense, the relationship between Olivia and her boyfriends continues to grow stronger. I especially liked how her boyfriends communicate when their pasts come back to haunt them and, as a result, need space or comfort.
Despite the issues I had with Shadows of Shattered Souls, I really enjoyed the story. It was another entertaining and suspenseful novel. I'm eagerly waiting for the next book!
The ONLY reason this is getting a 3 star from me is because of the emotion it pulled out and that I kept reading. Other than that, this was so OTT that I was BEYOND tired of the repetitive storyline. I don't know how it got so many 5 star reviews.
They FINALLY got her counseling. To be honest, I questioned whether the author took the first book reviews to heart about the fact that she was *so put together* in such an unrealistic way. The thing that BOTHERED me sooooooo much.....Why would they (not a PSYCHOLOGIST but the brother ER dr.) think it was a good idea to send her to a school after only a few months of her being released from 8 years of captivity (raped and tortured I might add) AND THEN abducted by a serial killer!? I feel like this was such an unnecessary drama that added absolutely nothing to the story except that we see such unrealistic behavior toward a victim of captivity and rape by peers.
Speaking of another unnecessary drama...the guy who helped her escape, Chris, his girlfriend blaming her for him dying....YEAH RIGHT! A family would be PROUD of their child sacrificing to help someone! Also, he was the stupid one who got lost from his group. Soo...dying in the wilderness because this place was supposedly *soooo secluded* would have probably happened anyway.
I got so irritated with this saying, "I just...". And it was exactly like that. It had the ellipsis right after then they would go on to an explanation where they wouldn't even USE *I just* in the sentence. JUST SAY WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO SAY!
THE MOST ANNOYING THING: How many times is the kidnap thing going to happen. She's kidnapped at 9. Got it. Then kidnapped by a serial killer. Got it. ALMOST abducted by the original kidnapper. Mmmm....okay. ACTUALLY abducted by the original kidnapper... *eye roll* okay whatever. This was overplayed so much that I felt like I was watching some sort of *whatever can go wrong will go wrong* movie. The guys constantly say how they will protect her and then it doesn't happen. Then she blames herself for all of these things....just over and over and over again. This book felt like such a huge filler. I feel like it could have just focused on her therapy and then the little girl being abducted and (can't remember the Mc name) trying to find her with past memories of things. There didn't need to be all of the added drama to it.
The only reason I liked this, the moments where the emotion really comes out raw about her parents. I felt really emotional during those scenes, especially the graveyard and piano scenes. I did cry a few tears.
One more thing that got my goat, what about her period? She was so malnourished and growth prohibited, does she even menstruate? Things like this would be good to know because since she was 9, she might not have know about such a thing and that would have been something great to add in since she was getting healthier.
I'll try and finish the last book but for me, I already know this series will not be one I would read again. I can barely even say it's a romance series because the author says that there are scenes that happen between characters but NONE of it is described in an actual scene. We are just told it happened. Oh, okay then. So we don't get to witness the growth of how she's feeling during those scenes we are told about, not gone through with her.
I feel bad for writing such a negative review but there are just so many things that didn't make sense and didn't add to the book.
This book was amazing. The first one completely broke me, and this one continues the story beautifully. I highly recommend you read this series. I'm eagerly awaiting the third book!!
I loved the first book & was excited about this one - but it was too slow for me. I'm ready for the main character to find her backbone & grow with the boys. It was just her having anxiety & panic attacks all over & making no progress (up to the point I read). I was just over it.
Why did you read this book? I am working my way through RH completed series I’ve been meaning to finish.
What format did you read this book in? Read it as an ebook on Kindle.
Is this an educational book or a book for entertainment? I read this book for pure entertainment purposes.
What genres do you think this book belongs to? Contemporary, Crime, Fiction, Horror, Philosophy, Psychology, Romance, Suspense, Thriller
What was your favorite part in the book? SPOILERS My favorite part is when the MC give Kyle a drawing and picture of his past-away little sister.
Who would you suggest this book to? Anyone who likes dark content, drama, and suspense.
What is your general opinion/ rating of this book? SPOILERS I feel terrible for the MC of this series. The content in this book was darker than the previous ones. (Make sure to check the trigger warning below.) It seems like she can never catch a break. It was heartbreaking to read about the guys pasts (except for Kade, his isn’t shared in this book). My stomach sank when another little girl that was similar to the MC, went missing. I am glad the MC is constantly trying to get better and facing her fears. I was confused by the mysterious body found at the cabin. I think the set up at the end was genius. I like the fact the characters were trying to be smart but bad things happened anyway. (I prefer villains that outsmart the characters. I hate it when the author makes a character do something out of character just to move the story along.) I am glad that piece of @$#% that kidnapped the MC is dead. But I really wanted to know how killed him. Overall, this is a good addition to the series and I want to see what the next book holds.
At what “burn” level is the romance? Slow burn.
Love interests, how many of them are there and what gender? There are 4 love interest, all of them males. Kade- works for CPD. Kyle- Ex-military and lost his whole squad. Cole- “Big Teddy Bear” Type. Matt- He has experienced trauma like the MC.

This book was much like the first book. Livy experiencing new things, panic and anxiety attacks, and soap opera-ish scenes. I really feel like this series could have been narrowed down to two books if you removed a few of the anxiety attack scenes and some of the mundane, everyday events that really didn't contribute to the story. That being said, when the author got away from the OTT stuff, she's really very good at expressing raw emotions and making the reader feel those emotions. I do believe with time and a good editor her writing style will evolve into something great.
There is quite a bit of redundancy in the scenes which caused the book to be longer than necessary. The guys constantly swearing to never let Livy out of their sight which then progresses to her leaving their sight and bad things happening, being one of many of the recurring themes.
Also, it's obvious the author is from the UK and did not have someone from the US look over the story before publishing. Little things like the difference in the spelling of certain words and the use of things like "Zimmer frames" instead of the more common term in the US "walker", and such make it obvious the author is not from the US. Consistency seems to be a bit of an issue as well. Throughout book 1 and most of book 2, Kade worked for the CPD. Then suddenly in the middle of book 2, he worked for the NYPD. I don't know if it's just me and I missed something important but I thought earlier it mentioned the series was set around Chicago, then suddenly we're discussing the NYPD? Little things like that should have been caught by Beta or ARC readers. Again these are not HUGE things, but they are important things that could be easily improved upon.
All that being said, I was still completely drawn into the story and needed to know the outcome of the kidnapping and such. Toward the end, I did skim a little because some scenarios and internal monologues were too repetitive. However, I fully intend to read book 3. I do hope the relationships progress more. I'm still not a fan of this clean-read deal. I mean it's a romance, so I expected something more than kissing and one tiny grinding session. I get the heroine went through a lot and needs to take things slowly but if she can be a math wiz, great artist, dancer, and graduate high school in a little over 7 months after having not attended school since she was nine, then I would think we could move this relationship along a little faster.
This series reached right into my heart and grabbed ahold of me from the very first sentence. It blew me away. It ripped out my heart stomped on it then glued all the little pieces back together again. Not that I read that sentence it doesn't really sound like a recommendation does it? So before I get too far into this I should say this series has some pretty rough content. Kidnapping, rape, beatings, child abuse, etc. Some people find these things triggering or just distasteful to read about. Whatever floats your boat, I'm not one to judge. But now you can't say I didn't warn you. I personally have never read a book where I felt the content made me uncomfortable. But I have never had any kind of abuse or trauma in my life either. This story is extremely slow burn, its not your typical kinky sex in the first 5 pages like most are these days. Personally, I love the tension, the build-up. How the lack of immediate sexiness gives time for the characters to build and interact. The care and respect that the 4 main men show for the leading lady is so amazing. The fact that all 4 main men suffered from their own traumas and use the knowledge of what they went through to help Livey work through her issues is such an amazing thing to read about. This series touches very heavily on mental health and how trauma can affect people. There are instances of panic attacks, high anxiety, and PTSD flashbacks. Livey is encouraged to attend counseling to deal with her issues and over time counseling helps her learn coping strategies and how to work through panic attacks. I work in mental health. I love to see books like these helping to shine a light on mental health and counseling. People everywhere need to know that it's ok to ask for help. The stigma surrounding mental health is so frustrating to see and I think books like this that show it in a positive way are wonderful. On a bit of a different note, I adore the cover art for this series. In a world where everything seems to be bright colors and rainbows, the stark black and white cover art speaks so much. I can feel Livy's pain just from seeing the covers of the books. I have honestly never been one to pay much attention to the covers unless there is a hot shirtless guy pictured. But these images really hit home that this is a book about Livy and her healing journey. Not about sex and not really even about romance. This is a story about multiple peoples broken pieces helping hold each other together.
This book was amazing! I was addicted from the very first one and i had to read the next, and i got to say, i'm not disappointed!! Olivia is such a nice female character, loved her and didn't think she was annoying.Maybe the only thing that bothered me a little was how little she thought or herself sometimes, but okay i understood that she'd been through a major trauma, so it took time for her to heal and all that. I was also very happy of how smart she was!!!! She was not like most FMC that had a bad feeling and just IGNORED that. Like, sometimes the heroine may have a stalker or something like that, and she felt she was being watched or something was wrong and it was like "yeah is probably nothing". Nope, here Olivia is so true to her gut. If she felt something was not right she would right away call or message one of her guys.YES!!! Thank you so much for being smart and not giving me anxiety. And of course, the guys were perfect!!! RH genrer is usually so full of bully stories, were the guys are usually mean and like to mock on the heroine.Despite enjoying some books about that theme is nice to have a break and just have sweet and very protective guys on my read. I loved Matt, Cole, Kyle and Kade. They were super cute and understanding.Of course, it helped that they also experienced traumas in their lifes, so they knew how to treat her right because of that. But eitherwise they were amazing. Loved how their relationship with Olivia evolved. There was nothing forced or rushed. Yeah she thought her guys were really hot and handsome, and yeah there were some hot kisses (and that scene with Cole, just supper hot!!!) but it had nothing beyond that, and made perfectly sense, because it was still all so recent and she was just not ready for more than that. So basically this book was perfect!!!! It had me with a smile on my face on some parts and tears in my eyes on others. Definely will be reading more of Kerry Taylor!!!
PS: Sorry for any possible writing mistake, i speak portuguese, but feel free to correct me. I love writing my reviews in the same language the books were written and want to practice more on that.
Book 2 took me right back into the emotional depths of Livy's story, and wow, it did not hold back. This isn’t a story where trauma is magically erased—it lingers, it shapes her fears, and it makes her journey feel so raw and real. I love that Kerry Taylor doesn’t shy away from showing just how hard healing can be. It’s messy, it’s painful, and sometimes, it feels impossible. But the realism in that? So powerful.
That being said, there were a few moments where I felt things dragged a little or could’ve been condensed. But honestly? The emotional journey made up for it. And the subplot—while maybe not the most realistic—definitely added some tension to keep things moving.
What I Loved About This Book 💔 Livy’s Emotional Struggles Feel Real – It’s not just "she was hurt, now she’s better." No. She’s still scared, still processing, still trying to understand how to move forward. And that felt so authentic.
🫂 The Way People Treat Each Other – This book does such a great job showing how different people react to trauma. Some are kind, some don’t understand, some make things worse. That reflection of real life? So well done.
😭 It Made Me Cry (Again) – Yep. I shed a few tears. No regrets.
Final Thoughts 💭 This book hurt, but in the best way. It’s not just about surviving—it’s about learning to live again. Livy’s journey is not easy, but it’s real, and that’s what makes it so powerful. If you loved Handful of Shattered Pieces, this one is an emotional must-read. 💕
I read another review that said the Olivia's recovery was rushed and unrealistic. I cannot agree after reading.
Olivia Byrd, now 17, was kidnapped at the age of 9 and was kept in the dark by a sadistic OCD. The story begins after she has escaped with no memory of how she escaped. She forms an instant connection with the doctor who handled her case at the hospital but it isn't a love connection but a bond nonetheless. The doctor feels the same bond and arranges for his adoptive parents to foster Olivia. When Olivia goes to meet the foster family she is introduced to the doctor's adoptive parents, 4 brothers, little sister, and his partner. Although she just meets these people, she feels SAFE. It is that feeling safety that allows her to bond with the family as quickly as she does. And as you read and discover more about Olivia and how her brain works, it is easy to understand how she is able to move forward with her guys. She us very resilient.
And Kerry Taylor did a magnificent job of character building while leaving you needing more. All the guys come from a sordid past. Taylor drops nuggets but never fully reveals. You are left at the end wondering not only about how the relationship between the 5 will play out but also about what happed in the guys past.
I just keep reading this because I love it when the gzys are protective but the make- believe factor is kind of lost on this girl that magically received education for 8 years to be able to attend junior or senior year I think? It's fine. She dropped school in the 2nd grade and is now attending 11th.
The personality of olivia in this book was simply "out of character" not in line with what she was introduced as. I get it she is getting stronger, but bitchy as well? When they were talking about how her first day of school went and she out front said one of her classes was a wasted of time for her I was like... can you sound anymore ungrateful?? That this family took you and your problems (that are a lot) in and you tell them this?? And also the food... like for someone that was starved for 8 years you would think she would have become more appreciative of the things she gets, but no she is picky now and will have matt cook her meals!! She's not even like "ill make myself something" no. She says "but matt will be making me lunch so that is solved" PFFFFFFFFFF noooo I cant.
And then she was *SPOILER ALERT* kiddnapped again and again and again, even though she is constantly surrounded by people that say won't leave her side and that work for the PD!!
Please... it is cariñO*, mi amadA*, mi vida!! Not Carina or cariña or mi amado... I cringe every time
I am completely lost for words on how this book completely captured me right now. This second book covered a LOOT of our favs' story. I love every single character and although some scenes are completely heartbreaking (that piano scene made me ugly sob for a solid hour it was too much sksksks) this book also gave a lot of healing. It just made me so full seeing how much support Livy has. She is soooo loved by everyone and has all the support she needs. Oh how I wish every single person who survived something that awful also had that same level of support :( I am so so proud of Livy by the end of this book. She has completely grown sooo much compared to the first book. I am just soo in love with this series and I want to commend the author for doing such an amazing job.
Shadows of Shattered Souls continues Olivia and her guys story and sees them dealing with the re-emergence of The Shadow as well as their developing relationship and starting school amongst other things. I absolutely adore this series, it’s one of my favourites to re-read and I find myself coming back to it quite a lot. The story picks up after the conclusion of the previous book and I really love how the romantic relationship in this book progresses, it feels like they are building a strong foundations before worrying about anything else. Although I’m not normally a fan of slow burn I really do love this book. I loved how Olivia really started to find her strength in this book and started taking charge in her life and I also love how protective her guys are of her. Overall, this is a fantastic book and I would recommend giving it a read.
Welp. I liked it. Spent a good majority of the book confused AF at where the heck this was set. I thought it was Chicago but then mentioned NYPD which is NOT close to Chicago whatsoever. It is set in Chicago. There is grammar and punctuation errors galore. Terms used are NOT ones you’d find in the US let alone Chicago. Part of the story was dumb and unnecessary like the bit at high school. It was unnecessary and just didn’t need to happen. IDK. Would’ve liked a bit more emotional connection with Grant and Keira and the guys. I mean ask it just mentions her fooling around and getting braver with the guys but that’s all just off page which could’ve been huge for character growth. Would I read it again? Nope. Do I regret reading. No. Would I recommend it? Probably not if I’m honest but I would disuade anyone from reading either.
