Some dreams dig deep into the soul and never let go. They call for vengeance!
Before the gods, before the war, there lived a freckled-face little mugger called Sojin. He dreamed of growing into manhood, finding a wife and settling down. But that was before...
On the run, hiding from gods, giants and chimeric beasts, Sojin meets a new foe. Lestas, a brigand who demands Sojin pay his dues and join his band of runners. As Sojin strives to stay alive, he refuses to abandon a new dream. To kill the god who murdered his mother.
It’s an impossible dream until he spies a stranger. A formidable rogue, an assassin, a thief—an Acquisitioner. Some say he speaks to the wind, and she listens. His name is Ammo. You may have heard of him...
Sojin is an epic fantasy prequel which can be read at any point in the series. It focuses on Ammo and Sojin, two awesome characters who appear in the Voice that Thunders series.
Sojin is a free prequel novel from Cully Mack, set in the world of her A Voice that Thunders series.
We meet Sojin as he is struggling to survive on the streets having stowed away on a ship to escape the horror that wiped out his family.
Sojin is an engaging waif who captures your attention, and we see enough of Ammo to intrigue. There is so much more I want to know about him! Cully writes such wonderful characters that you just want to keep reading, and this prequel is far too short. I could quite happily read a book just about Soijin and Ammo's adventures. I don't want to wait until book four!! Beautifully written prequel that teases you with the promise of the Voice of Thunder series, and the bonus is it is free when you sign up to her newsletter
A prequel to the Voice That Thunders Epic Fantasy series. The author does a great job of narrowing in on the background of two characters from her series while also teasing in elements of worldbuilding that make you want to read on to the rest of the series. I appreciated the attention to historical detail in the ancient Mediterranean style setting.
I love the 'a voice that thunders' series and Sojin is one of the many characters that I loved from that series. It was great to delve a little deeper into the story behind Sojin.
Fun back story about how Sojin met the Acquisitioner. He is quite a resourceful kid. I loved how he was so drawn to the idea of fighting against the gods and the evil in his world. It makes sense, but for someone so young, it also seemed remarkable the risks he was willing to take.
I started reading this before reading A Voice that Thunders and had a bit of trouble keeping the characters straight, but after reading the novel, this prequel made perfect sense, so I recommend reading it after. It was well written and quite enjoyable for such a little story.
After reading A Voice That Thunders, I was eager to find out more about the boy named Sojin. This prequel takes place before Book 1 and it gives more insight into Cully Mack's world of humans, gods, and monsters. I really loved this story. I didn't want it to end! Sojin and Ammo are my new favorite characters. But once you start reading this series, you'll start collecting favorite characters too! There are so many to love.
An interesting little story about a street urchin with grand ambition. The author did a very good job crafting characters and writing about their inner thoughts and feelings. Definitely made me want to read more in the series.
Good book that serves to introduce a world that promises to be rich and colorful. The characters we meet in this book are complex and likable and by the end of the book you are more than ready and willing to start the main series.
It draws you in right from the beginning, with such a satisfying ending! This is my first introduction to Cully Mack and damn what a ride! Sojin is such an amazing character to follow--a thief, far from home, and hiding from the gods and looking for vengeance for his mother's murder. There he spies a rogue assassin known as the Acquisitioner--who some say can speak to the wind and she listens! On the run and clashing with brigands, this is such a fantastic tale that leaves you wanting more!
This is a great story. Sojin,is a likeable character, he is resourceful and tenacious. Ammo is a mysterious character who has many rumors said about him. A fantastic read that is captured my mind from the beginning.
This was a great story. Sojin has quite the adventure ahead of him. Cully Mack is a new author for me and I am intrigued. The characters are great. Some make you wonder if they can be trusted and some seem just dark. I can't wait to check out the rest of the series.
Lot of time you read fantasy fiction and the characters have little depth or back story. Sojin is not one of those. Rich in back story and interaction it more like a woven tapestry that paints a picture.
This one can be had for free and checking it out is worth the time, at least to me.
Well now I can understand all the hype for Cully Mack! This is pure prose, vividly portrayed, so much so, I could see the worm peeking out the mud in Sojin's footprint, every floorboard came to life, every freckle, every strand of hair! And Sojin is probably the most determined younster I've come across in a while. The adage, if at first you fail, try and try again, comes to mind, as he absolutely makes it his mission to get aboard Ammo's ship, whilst trying to evade a gang and Ammo's crewmen. All, it seems, Sojin wants, is revenge for his mother's death by the hand of a so called god. This series promises to be full of adventure and excitement. And if this story is anything to go by, one I'm going to love to see how it unfolds.
I've yet to read A Voice That Thunders, but this short prequel has given me the chance to sample Mack’s storytelling, discover some (what I presume are to be) key characters, and dangles hints of a much wider, more dangerous world. The story is short and quick paced. It follows a young thief/scallywag Sojin who finds himself indebted to a pernicious brigand. I instantly warmed to the resourceful character and enjoyed his pluckiness. I’m also intrigued as to his greater purpose. First he must survive and escape, then there are promises of vengeance against the very gods! The prose is smooth and descriptions vivid. All in all, a nice introduction to what promises to be an epic series!
This is a great short story about Sojin’s brief journey before A Voice That Thunders after he flees his home after his family have been murdered. It is a lot shorter than I was expecting and I felt like I was just starting to get into it when it ended! I have just read a book almost 8 times the length of it though so no wonder it felt short! There’s not a lot I can say about it without giving away the whole story really. I like Ammo’s generosity he shows Sojin, he’s a good character. If you enjoyed A Voice That Thunders, I would recommend reading this book as it’s well written with some really great characters.
This one took me a quick minute to get into. I wasn't sure I was going to like it for a while. But then it started moving and I became entertained by Sojin and Ammo. I may have to go read the series now!
Allow most of an afternoon for this PG alternate-world fantasy in which probably preteen Sojin does his best to survive after the destruction of his village by the so-called god, Buzur. I've had a review copy from Bookfunnel for a while and this is my voluntary review.
Sojin seems to be a likable character in this series, but I don’t really see it. I was hoping this short story might change my mind and make me like him a little more, but it didn’t. It was nice seeing how he meant Ammo though and became part of the series.
“What makes you so special?” Sojin has been called a lot of things, but special isn’t one of them. Right now average is a stretch if he’s being honest. Left struggling to secure even his next meal and a safe place to lay his head, he clings to a vow of vengeance on the god that killed his family. But there is more to this young man, an untapped potential that only needs the right eyes to glimpse it and bring it forth. So Ammo steps in, a walking legend in many ways, with the details changing to suit his needed purpose at a given time. However, he’s learned to judge value, to find the hidden gem among the ordinary. It’s one of the many reasons the tall tales are mixed with wisps of truth, and he claims the loyalty of those that willingly serve as part of his crew. Honestly anyone that spends a bit of time with the real Ammo can’t help but warm up to him. Ammo. to his credit, doesn’t see just a “scrawny little mugger” but that extra spark, that “something special” in Sojin. It’s a spark destined to turn into a flame, one courageous enough to battle even the gods. That’s a good thing, because that’s where the tide will lead Ammo and Sojin, and the seas are guaranteed to become stormy soon.
MY THOUGHTS This 74 page novella is a nice addition to the Voice that Thunders series. The events that led to Sojin joining Ammo’s crew are briefly mentioned throughout the series but the author didn’t have space to explore their story in depth. I am happy that she wrote this one because Ammo and Sojin are two of my favourite characters.
