Rate this book

A caminho do altar

#1 New York Times bestselling author Julia Quinn loves to dispel the myth that smart women don't read (or write) romance, and and if you watch reruns of the game show The Weakest Link you might just catch her winning the $79,000 jackpot. She displayed a decided lack of knowledge about baseball, country music, and plush toys, but she is proud to say that she aced all things British and literary, answered all of her history and geography questions correctly, and knew that there was a Da Vinci long before there was a code.

A graduate of Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges, Ms. Quinn is one of only sixteen members of Romance Writers of America’s Hall of Fame. Her books have been translated into 32 languages, and she lives with her family in the Pacific Northwest.

The Bridgertons, her popular series of historical romance, is currently in production by Shondaland as a Netflix original series starring Julie Andrews, Phoebe Dynevor, and Rége-Jean Page.

”I was prepared to die on that dueling field. Rather than marry you and take your dream away, I would have died. For you. You were the one who insisted upon this union. You told me I was enough.”

I gotta admit, I genuinely thought I would end up reading the Bridgerton books after watching the show. I try not to be one for dumb fads, but it was being talked about enough that I figured, hey, this show has to have something fantastic in it if it’s that popular. Okay, and Alex Meyers talked me into it.

So, naturally, since I’m such a book fanatic that automatically translates into “I must now read the book and compare.”

Well, almost...

You see, I had a couple criticisms of the show. The biggest one was the issue of consent, because damn they royally fucked that up. It wasn’t just that Daphne was woefully in the dark about what it all meant—and sure, there’s historical context and all that, but come on—and kind of taken advantage of. But, there’s literal and intentional rape later on that everyone just brushed off because it was a woman doing it and she was angry cause he lied to her.

And fuck, I was not expecting that.

So, not only did she completely lose all right and credibility in her anger...she took away his ability to consent. And, spoiler alert I suppose, but she didn’t really ever learn from this, apologize, or deal with any real consequences. In fact, she just I’m honestly still in a state of complete WTF over this.

And apparently the book is worse...

Okay, so I hated those moments, the second one more so than the first, shockingly enough. But I did genuinely enjoy the show, despite thinking Lady Whistledown’s identity reveal was incredibly dumb, and wouldn’t have minded reading the book as a result.

Then Jack Edwards read it for me and I watched his review. I also read this review, further cementing my serious issues with this book as a whole.

And YIKES

Honestly, I genuinely do not think this book is worth reading. It’s bad enough that it was problematic in the first place as a show, but I cannot believe how terrible it actually is as a book. Thank goodness I stumbled across Jack’s review because I saved myself from a ginormous waste of time.

Plus, if you liked the show because it attempted diversity and conversations about race—not saying it succeeded, exactly, but I did like aspects of it—well, you don’t want to read the book. Cause every character in the book is...white. I’m not sure why this book was chosen as the source material for the direction the show went in—maybe it was the Whistledown stuff?—but...yeah, it’s not great.

I’ll pass. Thanks.

Overall review;

Definitely a re-read series. I fell in love with Julia Quinn while I fell in love with her characters, her writing is phenomenal, from the romance to the frustrating moments. All of the books were a can't-put-it-down-something-is-about-to-happen vibes and they made me either scream, cry or get so mad that i throw the book on the other side of the room. All of them had me hooked from the beginning to the end, and while I didn't love every single moment, the moments which I did made up for the whole book.
I literally feel like I've lost my best friend . I can't tell you how much I love these books. The talent that Julia Quinn possesses blows my mind! My heart aches with the loss of these character, but they truly will live forever in my heart.
I dont even know what to do with my life now, will cry forever and will definitely drown in my tears.
Julia Quinn did an amazing job and all I can do is thank her for this amazing experience. Will definitely read more of her books.

***Re-read 2021***
When watching the second or the third episode of the Netflix series I've realised that I've read the book some years ago and decided to re-read it to refresh the memory. I finished by re-reading the entire series.

Well, the books are rather typical for the genre. There is a loose historical time frame with all the aristocratic and powerful families, there is a love story with lots of emotions and some less or more steamy sex scenes. And for a smart and unprejudiced reader there are some moral and ethical topics to think about that are very relevant today.
The particular advantage of this series is the recurring allusions to all sorts of classical phrases from Jane Austen to XX century politicians. The disadvantage is the plot. I understand that it is difficult to put together five different stories that are still linked by the place, the time and, more importantly, by the protagonists being siblings. And yet, whereas The Duke and I and To Sir Phillip, With Love do stand out as more well developed, the others are too simple and even somewhat ridiculous even for this undemanding genre - I forgot the content on the next morning.

🌷BRIDGERTON SERIES REVIEW🌷

At the beginning of 2021 Bridgerton was all the rage. The Netflix show had just premiered and it met all our period romance dreams. I really loved how the show had modern elements with a diverse cast so I was excited to get into the books to read more about the family and their love stories. Now, usually I am a fan of the books over the screen adaptations but after reading this series I think I will be switching sides for this one.

It’s not all bad. If you are a fan of period romance books like Pride & Prejudice or Poldark, this might be your jam! Every Bridgerton sibling gets to tell their story, and with 8 books you’ll have a lot of material to read. Throughout the series characters continue to interact and the author has released a second epilogue for each book, leaving no stones unturned for the reader. That being said, the books are painfully repetitive. I genially enjoyed Anthony, Benedict, and Hyacinth’s stories. They were unique in their own way but as soon as I got to the second half of the series I was bored.

the Bridgerton series by Julia Quinn
Omg where do I begin with this series, it had me giddy and in love. These books makes me want to go to a ball and get courted lol. This series has so many tropes and I ate them all up. There’s enemies to lovers, marriage of convenience, friends to lovers, fake marriage, cinderella vibes, taken at the alter and so much more. Julia knows how to describe and show someone falling in love in different circumstances. The pages came alive, I felt as if I was in this bridgerton world and didn’t want to get out. The books and the show are truly amazing and have a special place in my heart. These books make me believe that I to can find love and wear a beautiful gown.

my fav books (in no particular order):
- benedict’s story
- queen charlotte
- daphne’s story
- anthony’s story
- Polin ( I haven’t read the book cause I was waiting for the show but I had to mention them)

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I'm not sure any series could live up to the hype this one has gotten, but I still very much enjoyed spending the last few months working through it. First, it's refreshing to have a regency romance based around a (relatively) well-functioning and loving family. Second, Quinn does a good job of not repeating plotlines and devices. And third, I was pleasantly surprised that I wasn't able to predict whose stories I would enjoy most.

I think this series suffers, as many do, with flattening out characters in subsequent volumes. The hero and heroine of an early volume may make additional appearances, for instance, but often, they don't retain the charm and interest developed around them in their own book. Oh well.

I ended up loving these much more than I anticipated. Yes there’s the whole “we stood too close to each other now we have to get married” context but the characters are just so lovable! ….. and they’re pretty sexy without being so raunchy you’d be mortified for your mom to read it over your shoulder (although you probably still don’t want to have that happen 🤣). Overall the female characters were surprisingly strong considering the period of the stories …

Some of the changes between the book series and the TV show don’t seem to bring any value in my opinion and the changes made to Penelope I’m definitely unhappy with … just a heads up in you’ve already watched the show or plan to. Obv the books are much better (but damn the Duke is beautiful!)

Listened to 75% on audiobook.

Some books hit okay, others didn’t hit well. Surprised by certain things since this was a female author, but also have to remember time period it is in.

The first 3 were a little more developed than the others..

Less developed, but most enjoyable
Colin
Francesca
Hyacinth
Gregory

I think I enjoyed all of those…such a blur at times!! Once I started- I had to finish them. Stubborn.

Livros envolventes, divertidos e leves.

I confess I got hooked on these - in fact I listened to all nine audiobooks but am counting these as one book as they were frivolous and light-hearted. Wonderful escapist fiction - but don't expect spectacularly good writing... I did love the narrator of the audiobooks. She is exceptionally talented.

simplesmente espetacular

I had to check my feminism at the door for this entire series. Book 8 I finally felt we had a less problematic main character, then Gregory broke into Lucy’s house in the middle of the night.

Just wanted to read the stories of Anthony and Eloise, and absolutely loved reading both.
I am so happy that the writer has done justice.

The TV destroyed Anthony's version, and hated the production for that, hoping they dont kill the essence of Eloise's version.
