tbh i think i’m a bit strict with this rating! (I hv many well loved quotes 🥰). writing seemed interesting at first - conveying themes through music’s innovations - but themes got quite repetitive! writing was choppy as well, stories were injected into paragraphs of exposition and then be swapped out for another leaving me with a feeling of discontinuation. i guess this goes to show each point or bitesize didn’t really hit its mark either - i’m like, okay and?

but i liked some of the entrepeneur’s stories it told hehe.
“So kevin is walking into a rival stadium, and people are cursing at him and throwing things, but he puts on his Beats and says: hear what you want. When that kind of thing happens, that’s going to win”.
“she describes her process of artistic creation as a search of emotional coordinates”.
“Sonically exploring emotions”
The whole foley room part - about a noise room that reproduces everyday sounds to be added to films & video.
Its definition of design thinking - really interesting & crispy! “design thinking” has become shorthand for a way to share the methods & mindsets of designers with the broader world of business…
“we started testing iseas around how to talk about convenience, without getting bogged down in the inherent complications of prescription and insurance”.
- about a cross industry - music and hospitality (hoteling) - entrepeneurship: “i saw how people in the restaurant and hospitality industry were actually changing lives, particularly with food and coffee. they were bringing a romance to their work, making it an art form, and growing from a few founders to hundreds of employees. This demystified the business side for me. I saw the same counter-culture and kinship I knew in music”: beautifully put!
- “this kind of teamwork is not about coming togesther to win…it is about merging to make, leading and following as modes.”
- about beyonce’s influence in the music industry: “the geeat thing about her team, was that they were just like, “we asked you to be a part of this because we like what you do. So just so your thing.” On hindsight this was probably a really insightful chapter about the power of the organic insertion and chemistry of two ideas rather than just about “collaborating” (as it was labelled and described in the prose).
- “but our goal is really youth development, through music. We prepare them for life. The discipline of studying music is similar to the discipline of studying anything; there is a strong connection between music and cooking, between symbols and sound, symbols and meaning. There’s an incredible self-satisfaction and self-esteem that comes with learning to make the sound you’re looking for.”
- “ to me, anything that you do that requires problem solving or thinking through a lot of alternatives can be called design…the most exciting projects to me are the ones that incorporate unconscious thinking with superconscious tinkering.”
- i like the experimentation chapter in general. beta testing was especially fun to read about !!! Like how the iphone was created
- “this is more than a valuable lesson for entrepeneurs; it is a way of thinking and moving through the world. How boring it is to believe that an original idea, posed as a question, has only one answer. It’s much more inspiring and fun to know that we can always find improvements…
- i liked when they talked about leadership.
