This is my first book by Catherine Bybee and I was really impressed by how immersive, even addictive her writing is. I kept reading until the small hours and couldn't put the book down until the mystery was solved and everyone was safe (the final part was absolutely nailbiting in the best action movie tradition!)
In case you get the same strange feeling of being given the backstory on the go, while Changing Rules is the first book in Catherine Bybee's Richter series, Claire's mentor Sasha, Claire's boss Neil (the owner of MacBain Security and Solutions) and his family- they appeared in Catherine's previous books. It didn't spoil my enjoyment of Changing Rules.
Claire and Jax, her best friend from their school days at Richter school, are sent to a high school on a un undercover assignment. The case deals with a human trafficking ring which recruits vulnerable girls. Claire and Jax have a triple task- identify potential victims, identify the traffickers and their accomplices and flush out the rogue police agent, whose identity remains unknown until the very end.
They are not alone. Claire is paired with Cooper Lockman, who has recently come back from the London office of MacBain Security and Solutions. Claire and Cooper have known each other since she was eighteen and was rescued from the shady happenings at Richter.
While there is undeniable chemistry between Claire and Cooper and their relationship develops gradually during the case, Catherine Bybee manages to strike a great balance between the focus on the investigation and the romance elements.
The protagonists are both strong, decisive, independent and caring in equal parts-no wonder sparks fly when these two friends decide to take their relationship to the new level. I'm just going to say it again-nothing beats good old friends-to-lovers trope!
I really enjoyed Changing Rules and would love to read the continuation of the series. Whether you are a fan of Catherine Bybee, like a story with a strong female lead or are just curious about the romantic suspense genre, I can definitely recommend this one.

I was super excited to see the first in this series was going to be about Claire. She was in Say It Again, book 5 of the First Wives series. Watching her as she used her abilities to solve a human trafficking case kept me engaged throughout the story. I loved how this author placed these characters into a setup that is so far out of the expected.
Cooper really had me falling for him. He had feelings for Claire back in the day but left her for her own good. When I realized just how much he still felt for her, I quickly cheered him on. This doesn’t have a lot of romance included but everything that involved Cooper’s feelings for Claire was a winner in my opinion.
This has a lot of sleuthing, down and dirty detective work. I was expecting more of the shoot ‘em up or blow them up variety or mystery solving. Afterall, these characters are students from Richter which is where kids go to learn how to shoot ‘em up and blow ‘em up. Nevertheless, I was unable to figure out who the bad guy was and loved the way this all came together in the end.
This is a lengthy read with lots of great characters, plenty of action and drama wrapped in the mystery, and enough steam to make the romance interesting.

I must having bad luck picking up book for this weekend. A weekend where I needes the most to escaped to different reality.
I usually like Miss Bybee's books before. She is a contemporary adult romance. Sweet and steady is her writting style. Sadly I am confused with Changing the Rules. Is this NA or adult romance? The characters also seem trap somewhere in between NA and adult.
And what worst, I can not feel their chemistry. Their banter is off and cold.

CHANGING THE RULES (Richter Book #1) by Catherine Bybee is the first book in a new romantic suspense series featuring characters working for MacBain Security and Solutions that were introduced in the fifth and final book “Say It Again” in the First Wives Club series. Even with the crossover, this book is easily read as a standalone with background information given in the story.
Claire Kelly was taught an impressive set of covert skills at her private military boarding school, Richter in Germany. Given a home and college education by the MacBain’s, Kelly has now worked for MacBain Security and Solutions for six years while living with her best friend and fellow Richter graduate, Jax.
Cooper Lockman has been working in the European MacBain office for the last six years and has returned to the California headquarters in time for a new assignment with Claire. He left to give Claire time to mature and make her own life, but he is back and finds he still wants her.
Claire as a student and Cooper as a back-up track coach are working undercover in a local high school to root out a sex-trafficking ring with a mastermind who has eluded local undercover police. The more they uncover, the more dangerous their situation even as their relationship heats up.
I was so happy to see Claire and Cooper get a story. Claire is a character that can take care of herself and was trained in all covert skills and yet she is a caring and giving adult. Abandoned as a baby and still at times affected by that, she loves the MacBain and Hoffman families. Cooper is perfect for Claire. He is willing to give her up for six years, appreciates her skills and does not seek to change her. Ms. Bybee does a wonderful job of making Claire and Cooper’s romance grow naturally while also keeping the plot and suspense moving at a rapid pace with ever increasing tension. All the characters, past and present and the increasing suspense keep you turning the pages to get to the final solution.
I highly recommend this romantic suspense and I am looking forward to many more!

Cooper and Claire work for the same security agency, but Cooper left the States six years ago to work for the European branch when he couldn’t get over his attraction to her. With Claire just eighteen at the time, and Cooper six (?) years older, his attraction didn’t seem appropriate. Now he’s back and they’re both assigned to go undercover and investigate the disappearances of high school girls in a suspected trafficking ring. Claire poses as a high school senior and Cooper as a coach.
Soon Cooper realizes the attraction he felt for Claire has only intensified, but this time there’s nothing holding him back. Could Claire feel the same about him?
Changing the Rules was easy to get into and entertaining all the way through. At first Claire’s reaction to finding out why Cooper left originally was so juvenile I had to roll my eyes, but she got called out on her ridiculousness quickly and thankfully snapped out of it. I appreciated that the drama came more from the mystery of the case and the dangerous situation Claire and Cooper are in than from their romance. Being undercover does limit the time they can spend together, but that just amped up the sexual tension between them, and I enjoyed every minute!
Richter is a spinoff from Catherine Bybee’s First Wives series, mainly the last book, Say It Again. Sasha and AJ together and both working for MacBain Security System as well, and it was a treat “seeing” them together. Sasha’s still a fun badass character! I look forward to the next book, A Thin Disguise, which features Olivia, a character I don’t remember from the previous series, but her role in this story has me intrigued.

Changing the Rules is the first book in the Richter series. Catherine Bybee is not an author whose work I am familiar with. However, the synopsis hinted at an exciting read and with that in mind I jumped at the chance to read this book. The story delivered as expected.
While reading, I recognised that this was a spin-off of another series. Information I wish I had before jumping into this book. This in no way prevented me from enjoying Changing The Rules. However, if I had the chance to read the previous series, I would have had more information regarding the background of the main characters.
Claire and Cooper, the stars of the show, both work for McBain Security Solutions. Cooper left six years ago to work with the London team. His reason for leaving had to do with his intense feelings towards Claire, but now he is back hoping to win her heart. However, before he can accomplish that, they need to infiltrate a high school to uncover the mastermind behind a teenage prostitution ring.
The story captured my attention from start to finish. Throw in some dirty cops, shady teachers and misbehaving students and you get an intense story which will keep you on your toes.
I had an interesting time watching Claire re-inventing her high school experience. From what I gathered, her true experience was not so great. Cooper made a great coach. I loved how well the team worked together to bring down the culprits. The interactions and the banter between helped to lighten some of the moments in the story.
The romance, although not the focus of the story, could have benefited from a little more development. Cooper’s feelings were made clear from the get go, while Claire’s proved difficult to determine. One moment she sees him as a friend, then the next she is head over heels.
I alternated between the e-book and the audiobook. Lori Prince and Joe Arden narrated. While I didn’t mind the male narrator’s voice, the female narrator irked me. Her accents and her attempts to sound like a teenager were off-putting, which pulled me out of the story several times. The e-book saved me from giving up on the story, which made it the better choice.

I always enjoy picking up a Catherine Bybee book and Changing The Rules was no exception. However in saying that and this is me there is always something that makes it fall flat, I can never really get the five star read that I want.
MacBain Security has been called in to support a taskforce with a teenage prostitution ring. Claire Kelly rescued from the secret assassin school Richter now gets to all 21 Jumpstreet. For all of you young ones, 21 Jumpstreet, the series with Depp (which I loved) and not the film with Tatum (which I refuse to watch why ruin a good thing?) Now that I have made myself feel old, let's get a crackin' on the review.
Claire Porter goes in as a student to see who the players are but she has backup in her track coach Cooper. When Claire was saved from Richter at the young age of eighteen, Cooper from the start couldn't deny his feelings but the age was a problem and six years is still six years. Neil who adopted Claire kindly suggested that Cooper go to London. However Claire was never far from his mind. After six years Cooper is back and can't get over Claire the case brings them closer together. I liked these two together, they work well. Both as a couple and as a team on the job.
Ms. Bybee does awesome Hero's they are patient, strong and alpha but not a-hole alpha. The heroine always has enough time for herself to realise what she wants and is never pressurised into anything. The hereoine is strong and knows what she wants and get this she isn't stupid. However although the plot was strong I personally think that the book could have been a little shorter. For my liking there was just one too many parties as well as being at school. But this is a fine line and well it can't be too much and not enough to wrap the story up properly.

I'm so happy that we got Claire's story. She made such a huge impression in Sasha's book. I love females who can seriously kick some butt and it was great to see these woman bring more of their skills to entertain us with. I'm hoping we will get more books with these former-Richter students.
While this is a first in the series, it is a spinoff of two other series. You could possibly read this as a standalone but I do think you would enjoy it so much more when you have that background knowledge from at least the First Wives Series. Claire showed up in the last book of that series and you learn where she came from and why she has the skills that she does.
I adored Claire just as much as an adult as I did when she was a fresh faced eighteen year old. It made my cold heart happy to see her find a family in Neil and Gwen, Sasha and the rest of the gang. You really see how much they all care for her in this book.
Cooper was just as great. I really like the decision he made and it was so obvious how much he adores Claire. I love seeing devotion like that. I'm a big fan of a love that just clicks like it did for Cooper when he met Claire. Saying this, I do wish the romance was bit more. The storyline was awesome and exciting with the investigation, I just wish the romance was a bigger part of that as well.
I'm eager for the next book. There were no clues, but I have my guess who is next and I'm looking forward to it.

Another entertaining read from Catherine Bybee, very easy to get into and a good mix of undercover investigation and slow burn romance.
It was great to see characters from previous series reunited. Looking forward to the next book.

When I started reading this book, I didn’t realise the story is strongly connected with ’Say it Again’. So I finished that book first before continue reading this one:).
Our H and h met in that book six years before this story started, she was only turn eighteen and I kind of understand why the hero made a decision to be away from the heroine.
But all good in this book and the story reminds me of that series which made Johnny Depp famous! 🙄😂.
I can’t wait for Olivia and Leo’s book, next! 😘

Changing the Rules (Richter #1) by Catherine Bybee is the first entry to her new series. She has taken the rescued Claire and has her as a Kick-Ass Security operative. The love interest is a man who made sure he left her six years ago...due to the feelings, he had for her. There is six years difference between them and when she was 18, the man felt it was too much.
Now the time has passed and they are thrown together to break up a prostitution ring with her as a student and him as her coach. This is a strong entry and beginning of the series.

Changing the Rules (Richter #1) by Catherine Bybee is the first entry to her new series. She has taken the rescued Claire and has her as a Kick-Ass Security operative. The love interest is a man who made sure he left her six years ago...due to the feelings, he had for her. There is six years difference between them and when she was 18, the man felt it was too much.
Now the time has passed and they are thrown together to break up a prostitution ring with her as a student and him as her coach. This is a strong entry and beginning of the series.

Changing the Rules is the first book in the Richter series. This book is a romantic suspense.
This is a spinoff series. And I wish that I had known this in advance. It can definitely be read and enjoyed as a standalone. But I prefer to know when a character's backstory is featured in a previous book.
The female narrator is 24 year old Claire (3rd person POV). She works at MacBain Security and Solutions. And she is put on an amazing case.
The story mostly takes place in California. And I love that two female characters are leading the story (Claire and her best friend Jax).
Much of the story has a high school setting. And the mystery is the key focus of this book. Yes there is romance. And we do get an intriguing male 3rd person POV. But to me the mystery was what made me not be able to put the book down.
There are some difficult topics discussed. There is lots of undercover work. And I really enjoyed it all.
Overall, this is a great start to a new series. If you like romantic suspense then I would definitely recommend it.

So, I don't hate this. I was just bored. Which is sad, because it is telling a very important story. Sex trafficking is a terrifying reality for far too many.
But as a romance.. it was lame.

Quello su cui stavano investigando i protagonisti non era nemmeno una cosa da poco, avrebbe dovuto essere molto più interessante e coinvolgente di così.

There's something utterly addictive about a Catherine Bybee novel, and I have been dying for this book ever since we found out that there would be a spin-off series from Sasha's story in Say It Again. We met eighteen-year-old Claire at Richter, the German military boarding school whose graduates used to be recruited as assassins, but we find her six years later working with Sasha for MacBain Security and Solutions. Clare's personal life comes second to her high-adrenaline job, until Cooper Lockman walks back into her life, and this time around, their age difference is not stopping him from declaring his intentions. As their undercover mission to infiltrate and dismantle a prostitution ring targeting young girls brings them closer and closer to the truth, their bond only grows stronger. Simply unputdownable!

Claire works as a private investigator for a sought after security firm. The owners pretty much have taken her under their wing and have treated her like a daughter. She has been assigned to jobs all over the world and can speak 5 different languages - not bad considering she is now only 23 years old.
When a new undercover job comes in to infiltrate a high school where girls have been going missing in strange circumstances, Claire is the obvious choice to play the role of a high school senior. What she wasn’t expecting was to be working with Cooper. He has been out of the country for five years but is now back to be her partner on this job, taking up the role of a substitute teacher and track coach.
Claire has not seen him for so long and he has definitely gotten hotter with age. She never understood why he left so suddenly but it is great to have him on her side as they try to figure out what is going on and who is responsible. The truth is, Cooper left because he wanted Claire. She was too young for him back then but now that she is old enough and mature enough to make her own decisions, he is hoping that maybe she feels the same way.
Claire manages to slip into the role of the new student, with a touch of rebel to get her noticed by the people who would be called the ‘popular kids.’ She wants invites to parties and to get to know who is who among the seniors. It doesn’t take long before she achieves just that, making new friends along the way. Her attraction to Cooper is becoming more evident and he decides to make it clear how he feels about her.
However, they have not lost sight of what they are here for. They can’t let what’s building between them distract them from the job. There is danger lurking around every corner as they work against time to figure out who is the mastermind behind this heinous ring. I love how exciting this story was, the deeper we got into this crime ring, the faster I was trying to read.

Changing the Rules is a charged, alluring, suspenseful tale featuring the competent, handsome Cooper Lockman, who after finally returning to the California division of McBain Security and Solutions finds himself not only working undercover at a local high school as a substitute auto teacher and track coach to suss out those involved in a highly organized teen prostitution ring but back working nice and close with the one woman, Claire Kelly, that caused him to flee to Europe six years ago and who he’s never been able to forget.
The prose is tight and seductive. The characters are dependable, multilayered, and swoon-worthy. And the plot is a steamy, rousing blend of friendship, family, tension, corruption, sizzling chemistry, flirty banter, red herrings, mayhem, sexy times, and dangerous situations.
Overall, Changing the Rules is an action-packed, menacing, addictive novel with irresistible characters that I devoured from start to finish. It captivated, amused, and thoroughly entertained me, and now I can’t wait for the release of the next book in the series, A Thin Disguise.

Overall I enjoyed this book. It was a fun take on 21 Jump Street (and they even make a joke about it in the book) with Claire, Cooper and other members of their team going undercover in a high school to find out who is involved in a prostitution ring. I loved the idea of the book and overall, the execution was done well.
The romance was a bit slow though. Cooper really liked Claire years ago but she was only 18 so he left without telling her why. They meet again when he comes back to her team. Well, now she is older so he doesn’t feel bad about wanting her. But can he get over her hurt? I thought that the romance just dragged a bit and was secondary to the mystery. Overall, an enjoyable story and thanks to NetGalley for an early read.

Omg its a spin off and omg is amazing i love those bad a$$ Richter girls and I didn't have go leave them behind. It was awesome seeing Sasha again too!!! This book is perfection.

I thoroughly enjoyed Changing The Rule by Catherine Bybee. It is the story of Cooper and Claire, 2 private investigators with troubling backgrounds. They work for a company tasked with uncovering players in a high school human trafficking ring. This book is full of all the good stuff: action, suspense, and romance. It is well written, covers a tough topic, and is very engaging. The characters were relatable to me and developed well with the storyline. I look forward to reading the 2nd Richter installment. I'd recommend this book, though, it may be a trigger for some who have trauma from similar experiences of abuse.

I really liked this one! (Of course I did- Catherine Bybee never disappoints!) I think this series is going to be really good. This story portrays a brief glimpse into the world of human trafficking/sex trafficking and it’s a grim reminder of the absolutely devastating fact that human beings, especially children, are being stolen and forced into that cruel world. Makes me sick to think about the utter depravity, hopelessness, and desperation of such a horrid circumstance. It’s a ray of sunshine to consider there are actual real-life folks like these characters, devoted to working hard to save innocent victims from befalling such tragic suffering.
Anyway, sad subject matter aside, I enjoyed this book.

Catherine Bybee is one of my favorite authors and knowing she had a new series coming out was extremely exciting prospect and I'm thrilled to say that Changing the Rules is by far one of the best books I've read so far this year. I knew early on in this one that The Richter series was going to be a good one!
Claire Kelly works for McBain Security and while she's a private investigator, she's got a host of other skills that make her very good at her job. Cooper Lockman also works for the company and he has just returned to the United States after spending the last six years working on an assignment in Europe. Claire and Cooper have a bit of a history and so working together could prove to be a bit of a challenge.
When the team is hired to help flush out a prostitution and human trafficking ring at a local high school, Claire and Cooper are forced to work together on a daily basis, which only heightens the feelings that continue to grow between them. Will they be able to do the job they need to do without tipping their hand that they are both undercover and also slowly falling for one another all while trying to keep the young girls being targeted safe?
Bybee does a wonderful job of keeping the reader on the edge of their seat while tackling a problem that is more prevalent than any of us would like for it to be. My eyes were opened to how intricate rings like this are and how sick and dangerous they are. I loved the relationship that Claire and Cooper had. Their banter made me smile so many times! I also loved that some of our favorites from previous Bybee books/series were very involved. I am without a doubt already ready for the next book in this series! Do yourself a favor and pick this one up!

I’m a fan of Catherine Bybee, but this book isn’t one of her best. I found the plot to be too fast moving with too many characters to be able to clearly follow. I had to keep searching names to be able to understand the storyline. I gave up near the end because I was just over the constant struggle, and I’m sure I missed some of the resolution as a result.
On top of all that, the romance was really left for second best. I felt like the MCs spent minimal time together and their romance was fully based on their friendship in the past, not really what happened in this book.

He was pining after her for that time, but he was not celibate. She was also with others during the separation but she didn’t consider him as relationship potential, just a friend. Another good read from Catherine Bybee.
Changing the Rules and The Richter Series is an extension, to some extent, of her First Wives Series and we can even go back to the Weekday Bride Series to Book #3 Fiancé by Friday (Gwen and Neil's story). This book can be read alone but I would recommend you go back to Say it Again in the First Wives Series to get more background. You won't be disappointed.
Claire has found that family doesn't have to be blood. She is strong, smart, determined, and successful working for Neil's security company. Everyone there is like family and having each other's back is more than a job.
Shortly after Claire (18 years old at the time) escaped Richter in Europe having gone to the states, Cooper decides Claire is the one for him. With Neil acting as father to Claire he suggests Cooper ask for a transfer to Neil's European office. This was Neil being nice.
Cooper does that and 6 years later he is back.
There is a lot of flirting and sexual tension between Claire and Cooper and this is what Catherine Bybee writes perfectly. If you want straight up page after page sex you won't find it here. I'm so happy you don't. Personally, I think you can only read so many sex scenes before they are all sounding the same and you scroll through to get back to the story.
The security team goes undercover to help break up a prostitution ring targeting high school girls. Claire goes undercover as a senior at one high school, her friend and roommate Jax as a senior in another. Cooper is undercover as an auto shop teacher and track coach in the same school as Claire. They all play their roles undercover well. I loved Claire's snarky ways!
Claire and Jax meet two girls trying to find their way looking to attend as many parties as possible.
Unfortunately, they become targets of those looking for additions to the prostitution of underage girls.
Meanwhile, a girl that disappeared three years prior, taken by this group, ends up in a hospital in another state. Claire and Copper head that way.
It's unknown what students and staff are working for the bad guys and who might be undercover cops and who can't be trusted.
There is suspense and sweet romance and the story will having you reading all the way through to know what happens next.

As part of the team of MacBain Security and Solutions, Claire Kelly and the team has a new assignment. They are going undercover as high school students to bring down a ring targeting young girls. One of those team members is Cooper Lockman.
Cooper used to be part of the team until he was sent to the UK to work. Now 6 years later, he is back and Claire doesn't know how to deal with the feelings she is feeling. As Claire and Jax are pretending to be students, Cooper is pretending to be a teacher/coach. This case will work out as long as people don't find out who they are.
As Claire and Jax get close to some of the students, hoping they can find out who is behind the missing girls. Cooper is a shop teacher and assistant track coach. Watching Claire run track is something that he isn't sure he can bear. Claire has to remind herself to dial down her running, she doesn't want to show all her skills and have everyone questions who she really is.

Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for the ARC of Changing the Rules (Richter, #1) by Catherine Bybee. I have been reading Catherine Bybee books for years and have always enjoyed them. I believe her to be a wonderful storyteller and love how her stories are both drama-filled as well as love stories...a little bit of something for everyone.
Warning: This book deals with human trafficking and prostitution of teenagers.
I really enjoyed this book. I loved how the characters interacted with each other and how characters from other books she has written (Neil) continued to play a part in this series. The chemistry between
Cooper and Claire was great. I loved their banter and to see how their relationship evolved.
The reason why this book was given 4 stars instead of 5 is because there was continual discussion about Richter and about Claire's history yet it wasn't explained what happened to her while she was there. It was very confusing. I thought maybe this was the second book in the series and I had missed the first one but no, this was the first.
There were also a lot of characters and at times, I had a hard time keeping up with who everyone was. This story did keep me guessing as to what would happen next and also who were the "bad guys". Overall, I do recommend the book.

I really enjoyed this book. I loved how the characters interacted with each other and how characters from other books she has written (Neil) continued to play a part in this series. The chemistry between
Cooper and Claire was great. I loved their banter and to see how their relationship evolved.
The reason why this book was given 4 stars instead of 5 is because there was continual discussion about Richter and about Claire's history yet it wasn't explained what happened to her while she was there. It was very confusing. I thought maybe this was the second book in the series and I had missed the first one but no, this was the first.
There were also a lot of characters and at times, I had a hard time keeping up with who everyone was. This story did keep me guessing as to what would happen next and also who were the "bad guys". Overall, I do recommend the book.
