The Braddock & Gray Case Files #2

The Haunting of Thornview Hall

Rate this book
For nearly a century, Thornview Hall has played host to occultism, betrayal and murder. It’s managed to hold onto its secrets.

Until now.

When Sully is forced to publicly reveal that he can see and communicate with the dead, he launches himself and his brother, Dez, into a disturbing murder investigation.

Sixty years have passed since five-year-old Miriam Garver disappeared from her Thornview Hall home. No one ever learned what became of her, and Sully and Dez are determined to uncover the truth.

But when a winter storm traps them on the remote property, the brothers soon discover determination might not be enough. The mansion isn’t just haunted by more than one spirit—it has housed human beings as twisted as the house itself.

As Sully and Dez unravel the property’s evil past, they are forced to contend with their own personal demons. Confronting the darkness around them carries stakes beyond the rescue of a young girl’s spirit.

It’s the brothers’ only chance to stay alive.

The Braddock & Gray Case Files—a series of standalone ghostly mysteries—follow the events in The Sullivan Gray Series.

Raised on a farm on the Canadian Prairies, words quickly became my means of exploring the world around me and giving life to the one created in my imagination. Fascinated by ghost stories and crime fiction, I have been writing both for well over two decades, drawing on more than fifteen years in a career in a criminal justice setting. When not putting Scrivener through its paces, I enjoy reading, portrait drawing, travel and spending time with family and friends.

Sully and Dez find themselves living through some of the trauma and horror they experienced in the first series of books. Sully must testify in his uncle’s murder trial, causing his supernatural abilities to be brought into public view. In order to prove that his ability is real when his uncle’s defense lawyer goes heavy on cross examination, Sully states that the lawyer has a little ghost girl attached to him. And so goes Sully’s life. Another murder victim who needs his help.

Sully and Dez are brought back to their uncle’s house: Thornview Hall. Coincidentally, their uncle bought the house from the defense lawyer. While investigating the darkness that resides in the house, Sully and Dez must live through their past memories of their family in the haunted house. What lurks under the darkness has evil designs and Sully isn’t quite sure how to deal with the unseen entity.

Bayne sets up a great spooky haunted house story. There are some hair raising descriptions and a couple of good mysteries for the boys to solve. The brothers’ banter is always good. The story moves quickly over the course of one night filled with spectral investigation. There is a bit of a twist at the end, which was good. I would have loved more development of the ghosts, the source of evil, and the twist to the mystery. Some things felt too coincidental and I felt like Bayne felt she needed to bring some things from the earlier series into this one. I just wish she had taken time to set those elements up more. Maybe flashbacks? Or at least more narrative. Everything happens in one night so it feels pretty rushed and lucky that it all goes the way it does. I still liked it but felt that her other books have been more evenly paced and developed.

Another excellent ghost book!

The Haunting of Thornview shall
By H.P. Bayne
This is book #2 in the series and I am certainly hooked on the series already! Great and unusual plot. Great characters.
World building is so good that as I was reading about the snow in the story, I heard someone mowing their lawn outside and it had me very confused. I was really with the characters battling the blizzard!
Can't wait for the next book!

Another excellent book in this series.

I love the symmetry of the story, beginning and ending with Lowell Braddock's trial. And from the very beginning, I got pulled into the story with Sully being outed as a psychic during his testimony. But things didn't work out as the defence lawyer thought they would when Sully described the ghost of a little girl standing by his side.

Leonard Jacob, the defence lawyer, asks for Sully's help, and Sully and Dez find themselves investigating a haunting at Thornview Hall... Lowell and Kindra's home and the place where their dad was killed.

And there is not a common ghost in there; the evil haunting that place is something Sully has never faced. The links to the past in this story aren't only those related to the entity living there or the ghost haunting the groundkeeper's cottage; Sully's past abuse is brought to the front of his mind due to the similarities with Miriam's, and Aiden and Flynn's murder is never too far from their minds.

The story is enthralling, and there are a couple of moments that are truly terrifying. But, as always, there are those moments that highlight the deep bond between Sully and Dez, and those of pure light when Sully frees the ghosts that are trapped in this plane.

I simply love these stories, they are scary, yes, but they are also full of goodness and hope. I can't recommend them enough.

EDIT
Adding my review for the audiobook, as that edition is not here *sighs*

I love revisiting books when the audio becomes available, particularly when, as is this case, I love both, the story and the narrator ♥

I still find all the scenes in which the brothers are faced with the murder of their dad, heartbreaking; the deep, raw pain they feel is evident but portrayed without unnecessary flourish.

And I still get anxious when Sully has to fight against this strong force haunting Lowell and Kindra's old house, afraid for him and for Dez.

Still an amazing story!

Still Great Characters But.....

I really enjoy both series of Bayne's books featuring Sullivan et al. I've rated all of the others 4 or 5 stars so felt I had to drop this one down to a 3. The characters are still compelling, and it was enjoyable enough, but it is definitely the weakest out of all so far.

The elements of the plot are interesting but it feels somewhat rushed. It would have been great if these ideas and new characters had been given more time to grow and reveal themselves organically, especially the two darker elements who hardly feature.
It lacked the usual tension building all of the other books had. Usually Bayne takes her time, allows her characters to struggle and often surprises. One of the elements of the story is hinged on a time constraint but a writer of her talent could have found ways to keep that AND allowed us to fully appreciate her story.

I am still looking forward to reading the rest of the series as I do truly enjoy them. I would definitely recommend both series and I hope there are more to come!

I was given a free ARC copy of this book, and decided to write a review.
I have followed this author through the entire original Series of books. This is the 2nd book in a Spinoff of Sully & Dez.
This was a wonderfully written story and I can not get enough of this Author's works.
I highly recommend this book but would recommend that you read the original series first to get the full storyline.

You might want to keep the lights on when you are reading this one - Dez and Sully find themselves back on familiar ground facing something powerful and threatening that seems to have it out for Sully. This creepy paranormal suspense tale features some really twisted characters including ghostly faces from the past. It was great to see Dez and Sully's relationship as they worked together though this one. Some serious moments - but also not a book that takes itself too seriously and plenty of fun moments as well.

If you are new to Dez & Sully, this book can be read as a standalone and is an excellent creepy paranormal thriller. The events in this book are completely separate from The Edge Creek Light. However, it does come after the events in the Sullivan Files and builds on characters, events and places from that series and as such contains spoilers for those previous books. I HIGHLY recommend reading The Sullivan Files first because they are wonderfully written and I love how Bayne added depth and nuance to events in The Sullivan Files without retconning anything. I can't wait to see what comes next!

This is one of the best thrilling scary books I've ever read. The characters are so good together. The love and comradery between the brothers is excellent. They are real men with a strong sense of self but also care deeply for their family. This book begins with Lowell's trial and his attorney begins attacking Sully's credibility and mental health. Sully is not intimidated and responds with a shocking revelation of the attorneys family member being with him. This leads to one scary ass layover in a blizzard at a supposed haunted house. I read this overnight and ended up putting all the lights on in the house. I am so glad my husband was home. Spine-tingling and hair raising scenes had me on the edge of my seat. I await to see what comes next in this series. Phenomenal.

Received ARC copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.

Probably the darkest horror story this far! Intense!

I was shocked at how dark and intense this story was! It went from zero to sixty in 3 seconds. It wasn't that long a book but felt like a Rollercoaster through a house of horror.. very Dark energy leaving the hair standing on the back of your neck! I felt Lots of raw emotion and tears burning in my eyes the last chunk of the book. What my Poor young friend Sully goes through sometimes breaks your heart. His Gift is Such a burden, yet such a blessing. When he helps troubled spirits cross I feel his joy as well! these brothers are a FORCE! the whole series just works!! on to the next book! YAYYYY!

A hauntingly good book

I love the way Ms. Bayne writes, it leaves you wrapped up in her words and world. This book left me on the edge of my seat until the end. It's a good thing I don't bite my nails otherwise they'd all be bleeding. Sully and Dez investigates a missing person which in turn takes them back to to mansion where their father died.
I hope you like this book as much as I do. All of the books I've read so far from HP Bayne I have loved. If you like books about the supernatural, you will like this book and all of her books too. Happy Reading!!

This is the second book in The :Braddock& Gray Case Files

This was another fantastic addition to the Sullivan Gray mythos this time around Dez and Sully must go back to the place their father was killed . Their uncle's home in order to attempt to find out about a missing child that disappeared thirty years ago . As they get their investigation going they soon find out that there is something very wrong with this house . As tragedy has befallen all who live in this house Sully and Dez must figure out what has happened and how to stop it from continuing to cause harm .

Dez nodded. “I hear you. I just hate things being left hanging.”

The ghost hunting detectives have to go to their uncle's creepy house for answers to a decades old mystery; and yes, there be ghosts and ghouls involved
It seems though that at long last, their uncle Lowell will be held responsible for his actions. It's been a long time coming.
Mystery gets solved and the verdict comes in, then, the book ends. As Dez says ' I just hate things being left hanging'.
Have to wait for next instalment I suppose?

Oh. My. Goodness! This was an intense book full of dark evil, darker evil, and darkest evil. What a horrible series of events. I am surprised Sully doesn’t need therapy after dealing with all of that. That said...I don’t think I drew a breath while reading. I know I couldn’t put it down! H. P. Bayne is a masterful storyteller and has a talent for terrifying the reader! I can’t wait to read what she writes next! I absolutely loved it!

I highly recommend this book. This was the best haunted house book, and because I love reading mysteries as well as paranormal books, this story was perfect. I would enjoy it as a stand-alone, but I feel more of an emotional connection to Sully, Dez, and their family after reading the Sullivan Gray series. It’s funny how there are a number of characters, and twists and turns in the story, but I never get lost or confused. The author has become one of my favorites.

This is the second of case files and it's a good one because it ties up the remainder of the case against Lowell and the old house, It draws in a little murdered girl and solves the problem with Thornview House, while although he doesn't want to know, Sullivan is shown how his adoptive dad died.
He does however get rid of a very nasty ghost and reunite the girl with her mother. An excellent story as ever. Dez is as ever the dutiful brother who keeps Sullivan safe while he does his thing.

I received this book as an ARC and this is my honest review. I love Sully and Dez. I felt like I was on this adventure with them. Bayne has such a wonderful way of explaining Sully's visions, I could picture exactly what was happening. This haunted story brings the boys back to Thornview Hall to help a little girl. If you enjoy ghost stories, you will love The Haunting of Thornview Hall.

This book showcases a fantastic case for sully and Dez to work on. It’s creepy and a bit terrifying for them both and sure had me sitting on the edge of my seat. I loved the twisted plot because it led to so many new things to investigate. I wiped away tears along the way. Really powerful storytelling with a great ending.

Excellent

These books are absolutely fantastic, I have read them all and seen the characters grow. The books just get better and the story carries on from book to book. Sully and Dez find answers to questions that they never even thought of at Thornview Hall about their father and uncle and quite a few other people. I can't wait to read the next book.

Another good story.
Sully and Dez have to investigate at Thornview Hall. A place of their youth, but also horror. Their dad was murdered in Thornview Hall.
The case bring back horrible memories of their Uncle. He's the one who was responsible, but is he?
Sully finds out the house hold a malevolent entity. Can he escape unscathed?
This was great, I love the banter between the brothers.
I am going to continue with this series.

The rapport between Sully and Dez

Makes these books interesting and a solid read. They need each other and both know it. Dez’s family keeps them both sane and grounded. The solutions to the murders are strange but not so far out there, that the reader suspends all reaction that they aren’t plausible.

An excellent first book in the series. It was thrilling, mysterious, full of ghosts and had some humor. The characters were well rounded and interesting. There was even a twist at the end that I didn't see coming. Very exciting and entertaining. I can't wait to get the next book. I highly recommend this book and am looking forward to more in the series.

This second book of the series takes a darker turn and kept me up, reading. Ms. Bayne has a vivid imagination and a gift for getting those thoughts across. So, turn off the light and let her take you on this thrilling ride.

Good Ghost Story

Second book I have read from this author and I will be reading more. This is a good story to read in a comfortable easy chair with the lights dimmed. Doesn’t get all gruesome while at the same time provides just a good down to earth ghost story.

A very good series!

Another exciting instalment from the pen of H.P. Bayne. A psychic thriller and a real page turner of a book, although it did get a bit cheesy towards the end. I look forward to reading further stories from this author.
