Colin Valerio has been performing practically all his life. From national team figure skating, to underwear modeling, and now posting (shirtless) selfies daily for his adoring audience. Many don’t know though that at 29, he’s quietly earning his MBA degree—that is, if he can fix his final paper. It’s got too much heart, not enough business.
National hockey team medalist, outstanding young professional, MBA prof on leave...Lexa Lorenzo is determined and driven, and did all that by age 32. She should be her family corp’s next CEO. But she’s all business, not enough heart, and her mentor/boss/aunt wants her to be more accessible, approachable, “charming.”
As luck would have it, Lexa’s alma mater calls her in to help a graduating MBA student—and it’s Colin Valerio, fellow winter sports athlete, walking/talking ball of charm. She has the sports and business background he needs. He is a natural at all the things she’s told to improve on, and may be able to teach her a thing or two. Let the lessons begin.
[Part of the Six 32 Central series, but can be read as a standalone.]
Mina V. Esguerra writes contemporary romance and young adult novellas. She has a bachelor's degree in Communication and a master's degree in Development Communication, put to good use in her work as trainer and content management consultant. Mina lives in Metro Manila, Philippines, with her husband and daughter.
She finds inspiration in the lives and experiences of other people, so the answer to "Is this story based on you?" is always, always "No."
Super-low angst romance between an ex hockey star turned rising businesswoman and a skater/Instagram selfie merchant who's doing a secret MBA. (Colin, the bi brother of Callie from Kiss and Cry). It's adorable. Lexi is frank and doesn't mince words, which as she's a woman makes her 'difficult' and 'abrasive'. Colin is a total people pleaser who does feelings and is rather used to being treated as totty.
There's no big Dark Moment or third act misunderstanding, just two people who are used to other people not seeing them right, and who find in each other the person who *gets* it, and listens, and cares. A soothing balm to the soul.
I am so amused — I argued yesterday online about bleak moments, tension, and third act relationship conflicts. Naturally the next book I read wouldn’t have a bleak moment, lololol. The irony is delicious, but I did enjoy the low-angst tone to this book (I still prefer bleak moments to no bleak moments, folks! My tastes are varied! 😂).
This book had unfairly high expectations placed on it; I love KISS AND CRY with all my heart, and there was little chance that SO FORWARD would touch me to that same level for personal reasons. Still, I enjoyed this ex-ice skating bi hero/ex-hockey player heroine pairing. It’s a very quiet/low-angst sort of romance, where two people who never anticipated a relationship in their future suddenly met a person who made them rethink their assumptions.
A few highlights:
- Lexa’s prickliness and self-awareness about being the “unlikable” one. - Colin’s insecurities re: his post-skating career failures and how that manifests in his desire to keep his MBA status secret (not to mention his Instagram thirst trap persona!). - I love sex scenes that incorporate vibrators. - This isn’t a typical sports romance. Both players are retired, but it’s fascinating to see how their lives are still affected by the long shadow of ice skating and hockey. Especially for Colin, who has built this social media presence and gets modeling gigs because of his past fame. - Glimpses of Ram and Calinda! Interesting to read the same scene in two different books, but they feel completely different because of the POV. The family dinner scene where all hell breaks loose! - There is this scene where Lexa realizes how she completely f’ed up because she missed something subtle in Colin’s paper (and as a result, her revisions/advice might have adversely affected his presentation). And she runs over to his place so she can apologize and compliment him for his work. Colin is so awed because she’s the first person to ever *see* him and validate his work/goals in that way. It’s very sweet and it melted my heart.
In his imagination, the space where he dreamed up choreography and costumes and music, he kissed her at this moment. In that space in his mind where his creativity came from, Lexa had skipped all the steps. This was, oh shit, all the declaration of love he ever needed. She saw him. She got it.
A few complaints: I really wish we had seen part of the MBA defense. So much of the book is Colin preparing and being nervous for it. Then we just skip over it? I felt cheated, especially because I was looking forward to it. I also wish we had seen Colin’s family more after the dinner scene. Him keeping the MBA secret is crucial to the storyline, and there is some convo with his mom post-reveal, but nothing after that. Compared to KISS AND CRY, I did think the family dynamics played a less important role to the storyline (maybe because SO FORWARD is shorter?).
Disclaimer: I have interacted with the author on social media, but these are my honest opinions about the book.
Mina V. Esguerra bless us once again with a new release, coming out tomorrow (July 15th!). So Forward is about Lexa and Colin. If you read Kiss and Cry, the book before this one, you know a bit about what happens (because Colin is Calinda's brother). Some scenes overlap in this new novel because it happens at the same time as the last book. Both can be read as standalones tho!
Colin is finishing his Strat paper, he is ready to graduate for his MBA. His professor sends him to another teacher, Lexa Lorenzo. Though they know of each other because of winter sports, they really hadn't "met" each other before this meeting. Lexa follows Colin on his gram where he posts sexy shirtless pictures and wishes his fans "good night". She has been crushing on him a bit and now they meet and this is all real.
I love Lexa. She's all business and I love that about her. Her aunt wants her to become the next CEO of the family's company but wants Lexa to be charming and approachable first so they all vote for her. But Lexa doesn't want to be likable so other people say that she's perfect for a position. Society has deemed women who are "ice princesses" at work as not approachable, because of course the women have to smile and care for others and help them at work for them to be perfect for the position and people to trust them with it *shakes my head* (this was all sarcasm!). And men are mean and rude and grumpy and everyone thinks that is a perfect front for work? Get out! I love that Mina writes about this topic and how Lexa is not going to please anyone with what they want. She wants to focus on what she wants and that is the most important.
Also love Colin's character. I related to him so hard because he is always thinking "am I enough for her" "she could have someone with a better job, a better future" etc. He doesn't tell anyone he's doing his MBA because he rather tell everyone when he passes and graduates. What if he fails, you know, is what he thinks. "Better to tell them when everything is clear." But I also love that he wants to keep this big thing for him a secret, because every thing in his life has been in the spotlight for so long (figure skating, modeling) and now with him being kinda famous on social media with his pictures, he wants to keep something for himself for a while.
The romance was just so organic? So natural and perfect for each of them. They enter it easily and go through it. If you're looking for a romance without angst, this is it, I think. There is no Big Problem that makes them break up or anything. This was really soft and great. I love seeing their development! Going from not talking to each other in public, to grabbing their hand and dancing together at a ball. *chef kiss* Mina always delivers it! We stan.
Thank you to the author for an early copy in exchange for an honest review.
What I love about this author's books is that it's always easy to see yourself in them. Colin (29, bi, MBA student) has that am-I-good-enough attitude going, and therefore prefers to keep his achievements or successes to himself. On the other hand, Lexa (32, MBA prof) has that "I'm not here to please, I'm here for business" vibe, and therefore essentially doesn't mind what other people think of her, as long as things get done - and done well. She could even care less about inheriting a company. MBA in minding your own bisnis. (This is her second unapologetically 'unlikable' heroine??)
I liked how they naturally and softly fell for each other as they tackled that MBA finish line for Colin (their history of being former winter athletes helped make that happen of course, although not that generously elaborated - not that I thought it was needed still), just like clasping hands or fastening a belt. (Or unfastening. Colin is also an IG thirst trap in the story, after all). There's no love triangle, there's almost no drama (Filipino family reunions always be cray 😂), there's no blatant villain - just two people recognizing what/who they want, making it happen and work, and filling the gaps. So nice
"Something felt soft and comforting between her fingers and she realized she'd been fondling the sweater, there between them on the bench. He'd notice, because he pushed it toward her, gave her more sweater real estate to smoosh." • When I started, I was fully ready for the story to revolve mostly on Colin, bec we already know him from Kiss and Cry, and also bec we don't come across an ex-figure skater bi hero everyday. LOL. But throughout the book, Lexa was taking her share of the spotlight too, and I was not mad about it, quite the opposite actually. Her wound-up and always-on-top-of-whatever-situation aura was a nice contrast to the seemingly perma-chill air of Colin. And my god, the ways in which he allows her to unwind and let go, and inversely, how she manages to help him all the time, was just So Good.
I loved the low-angst of it all (I thought the ~double-lives they've been living would just heighten the angst and stakes), bec honestly, in this pandemic reality, I kinda needed the comfort Colin and Lexa found in each other too, and this book delivered! And also I think it redefined "soft" as a character identifier in my head bec Colin is a hardened athlete and Lexa, agh, she's Hardcore in and out of the rink, but teehee, the two of them together is a lot of swoony mush.💕
I highly recommend all of Mina's Six 32 Central books and this one is a really fluffy addition to high-strung Calinda x Ram and tense Naya x Ben. 😊
*I mentioned in a previous post that I associated Lexa with a CRJ song called "Feel This Way". I wrote the lyrics on my tiny book journal and well, I should've followed the blue/green (teal?) color scheme of the book cover, but it felt like a pink day for me when I did this spread so there. 💖 • *This review also appears as a bookstagram on my IG: @bentchbites
I briefly thought about making this a 4.5 rounded down because I can't think of a single moment that blew me away, as it were--but that feels entirely intentional! This is a steady read, not an explosion, and if you really want the simile, it feels like being wrapped up in a cozy blanket and reading in front of a fire place, or something along those lines. So a 5 it is, because it truly deserves it.
I don't even remember how I found this one--twitter, maybe? I think I saw a list of low-angst romances there a few weeks ago. A list of Filipino authors? The #romanceclass tag somewhere or other? Who knows. However it was, I'm so glad I did. I'm not usually one for reading the last of a series before I've read the first, but this definitely works as a standalone. It was exactly what I wanted right now: low on the inter-character angst scale, but well crafted; I never felt like something was missing. The romance felt realistic in a way that so many (especially those tending towards instant-attraction/insta-lust) never do. The relationship between the leads WAS JUST REALLY LOVELY, 10/10 would recommend. Very much here for a soft, thoughtful romance, and that's exactly what this was. You know those friends that you just click with--the ones who understand you early on and easily? This felt like reading that, only with a romance instead of a friendship.
It was beautiful and comforting and felt like someone had gently massaged the tension right out of me. If you'll excuse me, I need to hunt down more of Esguerra's books now.
I was intrigued by Colin in the previous book and couldn't wait for this story because bi hero yes!! I liked him and Lexa together. Liked that she had this rep of being scary and his was for the hot shirtless selfies good night posts. :)
Lexa's family dynamics are so intriguing. How there's all this pressure on her to be the next in line to take over after her Tita, which means lots of expectations on her.
We got to see Colin's family dynamic as well, and I wonder if Cal (his sister) and Ram will get their own story? I need to know how *that* all works our because that dinner was just lol.
I'm glad the job aspect that could have become a big blow up wasn't? Colin talked about it with her eventually and she got it.
I want to point out how great the sex scenes were for me. They just felt like not only were these two people vibing off of each other and feeling each other but they genuinely liked each other. There was a a good mix of sweet and sexy going on.
Looking forward to more in this series (if there's going to be more)
3.5 stars rounded up Low angst, drama free contemporary romance which I mostly enjoyed. I liked the strong heroine who was never seen as cute or sweet but is strong and independent and knows who she is. I liked the hero who presented one persona for the world to make a living but was a rather different on the inside. I expected a lot more of the sports aspect and felt it was rather underwhelming. They are both retired sports players and we saw very little of it. Another thing which I consider a miss in the story is how his MBA defence was skipped. His preparation for it was discussed in detail in the book, it played a central role in bringing the MCs together romantically and I expected to see the actual defence on page in the book. Despite these I would say minor issues, I still had fun reading this book and greatly recommend it.
This was the first Mina Esguerra book that I found to be just "ok." I admit to having my eyes glaze over at certain parts, and I skimmed more than I typically would. I think this is less because of Mina's writing or the novel's content than because I have less of an innate interest in hockey/figure skating or business school. But I will add that I also found Colin's and Lexa's characters harder to grasp; they somehow didn't come alive as much for me, and their relationship seemed...sudden and unexpected? Again, all of this could be because I'm more artsy and anti-business (or, anti-capitalist), and I don't understand sporting culture...
The Manila setting and the ice hockey trappings are intriguing, and some of the conversations between the romantic leads are great. But the author is frustratingly prone to diffusing all tension and sets up three or four great potential set pieces which she then promptly avoids, the potential lessons for each person aren't learned, and the final conflict is just a random potential argument that has nothing to do with previous themes and is immediately diffused. I don't mind low-conflict, but this one threatens conflict and then side-steps it. It mostly feels avoidant.
"When she stopped talking, he remained silent, and Lexa wondered if she'd gone too far. Defense rehearsals, hockey practice, and unfortunately in other parts of life - sometimes people asked for her to come at them at full strength only to say nope, not that strong."
Hockey player heroine figure skater hero! One of my most anticipated books this year, and I SAVED it for after my vacation - thanks Past Frida!
Adored this and would unhesitatingly recc it to anyone looking for a post-skating/hockey career romance. I loved how the settings felt so believable, especially the realities of executive work, family companies and grad school. The love story blooms between two unusual people because they totally get each other’s personalities and trust each other. I find that so appealing. Also, the hero is a gorgeous cinnamon bun, while the heroine is intimidating. Hello, perfection!
Bought this for the sports element, which didn't disappoint. Voicey as hell and has great use of epistolary elements. I appreciate when a hero is bi and that he has exes and a love life that are incorporated into the narrative. It also does not explain certain words, phrases, or assumptions in text, which I appreciate (and can get from context/google/etc.)
As always Mina V Esguerra has produced a book with such gorgeous characterisation and detail. I love the way her writing reaches into the characters and their relationship, so that their personalities, histories and future together could unroll gradually through the book and capture my heart happily along the way too!
Very sweet romance between a retired figure skater (him) and a retired hockey player (her). I know absolutely nothing about corporate culture in the Philippines, but I think I followed enough to go on with. Probably missed some nuance. I really liked that the main attraction between two attractive people was feeling understood.
I didn’t realise how much business would be the main focus point of this and I was too bored by that to get invested in the romance. If I’d have known that beforehand I wouldn’t have read it, so I don’t feel right rating it.
Great lack of drama, plus grounded adult conversations, but all the corporate stuff didn't exactly float my boat. Very much me, not the book. Here’s to a workaholic character who at least knows how to nap, though!
Cute contemporary. I was hoping for a sports romance, but these characters were in their second careers after sports. I don't think I've read anything from the RomanceClass authors, so this was a good introduction.
Beautifully done! MCs knew of each other and finally connect, unspooling the story wonderfully. It's got so much going on in its relatively compact pages. Lovely to see characters "get" each other, and dodge obvious, unnecessary angst. Highly recommended.
So Forward was an enjoyable low-angst contemporary romance with sympathetic leads and realistic conflicts. I liked learning about the MBA process (in general and in this situation), and I think my favourite parts overall were when Colin realized Lexa saw/understood him.
my third novel by Esguerra and I can definitely say I am a fan of her works! She creates interesting characters and I love how she focuses on low-stakes stories that make you fall back in love with the mundane, the little moments, that make up most of our lives without making it boring.
