Alec: Lumen is amazing. She brings out the playful, relaxed side of me, but fate doesn’t seem to agree we belong together. And now, my ex pops back into my life and wants to make a go of it again so our daughter can have a real family. I’m torn between what’s best for my daughter or following my feelings for Lumen.
Lumen: Just when our relationship was going great, Alec basically blows me off the minute his ex is back in town. He texted that he needs a break while he figures out what’s going on with his family. And to add fuel to the fire, someone told my principal about the massage parlor job I had before I started teaching, like it was something illegal. Who else knew about that job but Alec? I’m crushed. This is why I don’t do relationships.
Third-grade teacher Lumen Browne and multi-billionaire CEO Alec McCrae are an unlikely couple, but they’re willing to defy the odds. As they struggle to fit into each other’s lives, they must decide if they’re willing to fight for their love…or walk away.

3 stars. Did not like Keli's character whatsoever. I hated how Lumen was treated and felt like she was tossed aside by Alec. I feel like he should have grovelled more. I will be reading the next book to see how it all turns out. I am curious to see if Lumen will be treated better.
What an ass! Seriously... how are the ratings so high?? What did Alec do in this book that was swoon worthy in any way? He doesn’t even check on her or show concern when she’s involved in the school accident just as much as Evanne. He takes off and only calls her to get off. He only shows up when he needs sex. Then he dumps her as soon as the ex rolls into town. Am I missing something? He’s an ass! And she’s a pushover for not seeing. Come on foster kid, stick up for yourself. She had some great thoughts and strong self talks, but didn’t actually DO anything to respect herself. 🙄
I skipped the first book and skim read books 2 and 3 because I found them on a Hero puts OW first list and was in the mood for a specific type of drama, and it does technically fit (sort of), but doesn’t deliver any real drama or feels.
I’m going to write basically the same review for both because the two books could’ve easily been condensed down to one and have most of the same issues. As I said, I didn’t read the first book, but I never really felt like I missed anything because Alec and Lumen never have much of a relationship (or chemistry) through the entire series.
This opens with some sort of school shooting that goes nowhere. Alec is super worried about his daughter Evanne (Lumen is her teacher), he shows very little concern for the h and leaves town to spend time with his daughter.
While away, the kid’s mom (briefly dated before/during pregnancy) returns and wants to give things a go. Alec eventually drops Lumen because he thinks this will be best for his daughter.
Ok, so this lost me because this is about halfway through and the H and h have spent hardly any time together (maybe had a couple quickies), he hardly thinks about her, and she doesn’t act heartbroken by his decision. Alec isn’t even into the ex (Keli) the kid is in the 3rd GRADE, so why is he even entertaining the idea of getting back with her? Plus, this is book 2, shouldn’t they be more stable as a couple?
❌ No feels or emotion from the characters. ❌ No chemistry and the couple hardly spend any time together. ❌ H never calls out OW for anything even after knowing she tried to sabotage her job. ❌ No discussion or grovel after dropping her most of the book.
Bottom Line- I’m not going to rate it because I missed the previous book, but this was flat. I felt nothing. After being told that Lumen received a key to his apartment last book, I would assume a level of intimacy and commitment, but it’s not there. The dude didn’t even follow up after he left town to see if she was ok, I would think just a regular old boyfriend would do that.
2 Stars… Jury has reached a decision and Alec is an ASS! I love single parent romance, and it’s pretty common for the parent to fear a new relationship for their child’s sake … but he was unwarrantly cold and callous to Lumem.. and really only used his parental obligations as an excuse unless he wanted to get his dick wet. For example, in the previous book, Alec knowingly took Lumen’s virginity then left her at a hotel thinking he’d never see her again, because he had to focus on raising his daughter…. Fast forward 2 weeks later and Alec is having sex with Lumen, his daughter’s teacher, in his house while his daughter is across the hall. How is that doing what’s best for his daughter??? Other reasons for Alec being on my shit list: 1. There’s an incident at school involving a gun and of course he should worry most about his daughter, but he doesn’t even ask lumen if she’s ok. 2. He decides he’s ready for a relationship, gives her a KEY TO HIS HOUSE, then shortly calls things off IN A TEXT MESSAGE… if that wasn’t bad enough, he gets irritated that his break up text didn’t hurt Lumen!
“I should have been thankful that she hadn’t become angry or accused me of leading her on or using her. Neither of those things were true, but someone who was hurt might not be thinking clearly. What I feared, however, was that Lumen had been able to think clearly because she wasn’t hurt.” UMMM NO.
3. He shows up to Lumen’s home and berates her for marking incorrect answers on his daughter’s hw (you know, for doing her JOB AS THE TEACHER).. then realizes it was his fault…
4. Being dyslexic is not something to be ashamed of. It’s pretty sad that Alec is a fucking billionaire CEO but can’t be upfront about his condition… no, instead he’ll sit and silently sulk while on a double dinner date because he’d rather order the same meal as Lumen (and mentally complain about not wanting to eat that) instead of asking a few questions about the menu.
5. Back to #3… Lumen immediately forgives Alec and fawns over his show of vulnerability but that wasn’t enough for me.
6. After they have make up sex, the first thing Alec says is, “Fuck, I have to go!” … typical. Oh, but then he tells Lumen he wants her to move in with him… while the whole reason he was at her house in the first place was to yell at her.
Run Lumen! Run far far away! I don’t think I can finish the series after this trainwreck of a sequel. I’m sad because I’d like to know what’s up with the teen in foster care, but everything else would be a waste of time.
This has turned into quite the serial read! It’s not overly anything but yet exciting and captivating! I can’t wait to read what’s next …. 4.5 Bring It On Stars!!
Breaking Rules picks up right where we left off in Off Limits. It’s getting all kinds of spicy up in this story kids! And by spicy, I mean it is giving daytime soap opera a run for its money. I am still seriously invested!! There’s a ton of emotion and a bit of hmmmmm, what is she up to?!?! going on in this particular segment and I’m hoping all parties involved come to their senses sooner rather than later but I think the author has a few more twists up her sleeve for us so we shall see ….. stay tuned :)
It was a good book. I didn't like the book as much as the first part. The first part was very good but this book didnt stand up to the mark. The entry of Keli wasn't necessary in my opinion and secondly Alec's indesisveness and confused thoughis wasn't much likable either. Firstly he was indesisve about his relationship with lumen and he didn't even cared about her to ask her how she is then suddenly he wants a relationship with her then again after the entry of Keli he breaks up with lumen and didn't even think how she will feel. Then at the end again suddenly he realised he wants to be with lumen and ask her to move in. I mean the guy needs to really clear his thoughts. Didn't like the male hero's character in this book however the character's role as a father was very good but as a partner/boyfriend he wasn't good at all. However lumen's character was very likable, how she treats the students. The way she cares about the foster kids, the way she handles the complication arises in the school was nice. I liked the family of Alec as well. But there wasn't that much role of Evanna in this book as it was in the first one. I wanted more of her in this book too. Overall the book was good if we ignore the whole complication the hero creates himself in the book.

The first book of this series was great but this one...ERGH! It’s so so frustrating. The lead male character is so so frustrating. He treat the heroine SO BADLY numerous times and she doesn’t object. AT ALL! She just takes it. Every single time. I can’t stand for that. I don’t want to read a book where the heroine is a doormat. I kept waiting for her to stand up for herself and say ‘enough is enough’ but it just didn’t happen. I’m bitterly disappointed. I made it to the end and the guy came to his senses and realised he made a mistake. He asked for another chance and she welcomed him back without question. What. The. F**k!

This was the worst book I've read in a long time LOL not even sure why I want to read book 3 but I need to know if it gets better. I hated everyone in this book. It started off with a school shooting? Like what? Why? Then other woman drama and Alec straight up breaking up with Lumen for Kelli and then the second he comes to her door screaming at her and mentions he made a mistake she tells him they'll make it work. Wait what? This book was terrible lol
I've read a lot of books written by M.S. Parker; she has done an excellent job at writing a good book; she is one of my favorite authors. I can’t wait to read more of her books.
The story line caught my attention at the very beginning and kept me interested throughout the entire book.
I loved the characters.

School shootings, an ex that comes back with messed up intentions, a leachorous Vice Principal and a break up that should have Lumen getting a stiffer spine. She took him back way too easily. I lost alot of respect for her for caving so easily. Good read, not great bot good. Now its on to Book 3.
Pat 2 of the soap opera of Alec and Lumen. Alec's ex comes back into town. Their little 8yo girl is ecstatic to see mom and dad. Alec feels he owes it to his daughter to try to become a family. Lumen is put thru a lot of trials at home, at work and in community. TBC
**This book is part of a series... if you haven’t read the first instalment, make sure you read that before you continue to read Breaking Rules**
So after the abrupt ending of the first book, we are back with Alec and Lumen. I was a bit disappointed that the first book ended abruptly, just as things heated up between these two... but I guess Parker always knew this was going to be a series, so she needed a carrot to dangle.
However, if you’re expecting this book to continue with the same intensity you might be a little frustrated that the beginning feels a bit... well, lacklustre. A bit flat. Again, Breaking Rules takes a little while to get going to the point where you wonder if something has happened to them between the two instalments. It hasn’t, but everything just feels a bit tame.
It isn’t until a few Chapters in that we get back to the intensity that the first book left us at. Alec is still the broodingly gorgeous Scot. Lumen is still the intelligent and caring teacher; the only person other than his own daughter, Evanne, to have ever stolen the heart of the work obsessed Billionaire.
But... the path of true love never did run smooth, and after an incident at Lumen and Evanne’s school, Alec panics. Fearing for his daughters safety and wanting to give her some distance from the traumatic event, he takes Evanne to visit his family, leaving a confused Lumen behind to deal with the aftermath herself.
Unfortunately, everything is about to be turned on it’s head when Evanne’s mother, Keli, arrives out of the blue at his parents home. She’s back... but why? After signing over full custody to Alec to go and live with her new boyfriend in Italy she just waltz’s right back into Evanne’s life without so much as a ‘sorry I chose my child-hating boyfriend over you’ apology. I mean... alarm bells!!
Alec is sure something isn’t right... and he’s not wrong. She’s back to put a wedge into his happiness and he can sense that this isn’t going to be good for his relationship with Lumen not if her intentions are to rekindle any chance of them being a family.
Alec is trying to get his head round being a full time dad, keeping up his business, being a lover in a new and much wanted relationship and remaining civil and amicable with the mother of his child. It’s a lot to juggle. He’s never had the same feelings for Keli as he does for Lumen, but can he possibly have both women in his life without the possibility of his daughter feeling torn?
It’s not an impossible situation, but as Keli makes herself at home within Alec and Evanne’s life, it becomes obvious that she is jealous of Lumen and the depth of feeling that Alec has for her. She makes it her mission to come between Alec and Lumen, particularly when she can see what a positive impact she has had on Evanne.
The only way she can dislodge Lumen is to play the ‘happy family’ card and play on Alec’s good nature and love for his daughter. With the decision weighing heavy in Alec’s heart, he reluctantly asks Lumen for a break so that he can see where things are headed... but in the back of his mind, he knows where his heart lies and it’s not with mother of his child. Can he give up on the potential happiness he could have with Lumen for the sake of something that might make his daughter happy, but make him miserable? What or who will he choose? Will he follow his heart or sacrifice it for his daughter?
In the mean time, after nearly losing her job, breaking up with her lover and having a depressed and difficult Soleil to try to keep on the straight and narrow, Lumen is lost and low. Why would someone try to discredit her? Alec is the only one who knew her past, so she assumes it’s his way to get her out of his and Evanne’s life... but is that what actually happened or is someone else out to get her?
I certainly preferred this to the first book. Gone is the over use of past tense, which makes it easier to read and there’s a little more substance to this story, and although this book ends rather abruptly (and unexpectedly) again, it does give the hint that there is more to come.... and I can’t wait to read on. I’m still loving the Gaelic references and his little pet names. It’s endearing. Let’s see how this story ends shall we... into book 3 “Mending Fate”.
I don’t really know how I feel about this one. With Alec and Lumen, I just feel like we’ve seen their connection, but we haven’t at the same time? I would have appreciated more of a development. Also, I don’t think Alec groveled enough at the end there. He had the nerve to come at Lumen for marking Evanne’s answers wrong. Like...she’s a teacher? How can you go from screaming at her about something she had no control over, to inviting her to live at your place within an hour of time? Other than that, I do like the main characters. Evanne is my favorite, though.

Breaking Rules by M. S. Parker is book Two in the Scottish Billionaire series. This continues the story of Alec McCrae and Lumen Browne, so you should read the previous book 'Off Limits' before starting this one. Alec wants Lumen but he also wants to make his daughter happy...is that getting back with her mother to make a family? Alec takes a break from Lumen to figure things. But Lumen has been hurt in the past and now it seems that maybe she trusted Alec to quickly. This book doesn't finish their story but sets us up for the next installment in the book called 'Mending Fate'.
Interesting opener with Off Limits. Hooks you into a story that might be okay. But truthfully filled with boredom & lulls. Too a many fillers of over dramatic events. Hello this guy attempted her by propositioning her for sexual release... Then they're on a date & bam they're in a hotel room -she's a virgin & waiting for this. (Far stretch there). With zero relationship building, just at it again. But written over & over & OVER again about his daughters mother & their lack of relationship. Not the best guy & she's just wimpy. Off Limits ends with a cliffhanger, that doesn't really entice into book 2, Breaking Rules, but more of needing to be humored, I continued. Breaking Rules opens dramatically then more fillers & lulls. It's overkill with repetitive thoughts again & again. Vague way of introducing more characters. Overall Breaking Rules (book 2) annoyed more than anything. Absolutely zero relationship building, but filled with useless thoughts (on repeat). Then a few spicy scenes but zilch communication with the two. Simply Breaking Rules (book 2) was beyond boring. Now lets see where Mending Fate, book 3 wraps these up. More in-depth character building, but definitely not enough to encourage me any further. Little better on the main couple. Little more overall drama, little more encouragement, little more of everything book 2 was missing. But a decent ending that was warming & pleasing. Literally ends in a sex scene though. Overall half that was in these 3 novels is useless writing & boring. Enough where you can put the book down & not bother reading for a few days. Bored into falling asleep. Simply boring fillers. If that is removed & the relationship evolved a bit more you could potentially put together a fantastic, in-depth story of true romance with enough drama to entice a truly enjoyable novel. Personally its still missing a ton of info, what happens with her job, the school, her crazy boss, his company (why do we care about his co-workers & a paragraph or more, about them if they aren't relevant to the story) ugh mindless fillers. Useless writing not pertinent to the overall story. I'm hopeful this author progresses better with story telling further into the series. I may attempt one more novel (a stand-alone) from this author in hopes to find something amazing from her. The only reason book 3 Mending Fate appealed more, I feel the author made a much better attempt at building the story, perhaps the last chapter is still more fresh in-mind, but was a far better story than the other two.
This one may even be a 3.5 for me instead of a 4. Alec and Lumen in the first book were fine, but as their characters develop, I found myself seeing Alec as a weak man who wasn't willing to admit or stand up for what or, in this case, who he wanted - Lumen. Him choosing Keli in any capacity was just ridiculous when he was clearly in love with Lumen and had her in his heart. There would be no "pro" good enough to stay with Keli after her ditching their daughter to run off with another guy (first book) and then suddenly showing back up in Alec and the daughter's lives. No, thank you. And let me talk about how he handled the whole school shooting.... hard no! Yes, his focus should have been on his daughter, I get that, but Lumen is/was important to him at the time too and what does he do? Runs off with his daughter back to his homeland and tells Lumen via text he's leaving. Whaaaat?? He didn't even ask her how she was coping after finding his daughter was coping just fine because she had no idea what was going on! So yeah, his character just went downhill for me quickly. Then bring in some dyslexia and it explained a couple things in the book, but how did he get where he was in life if he wasn't able to better handle the dyslexia and cope in life overall? you know, such as the new restaurant for the double date he went on. Having dyslexia is fine for the book, but I just didn't find how he was able to make it in the business world doing emails and such without having a better handle on the dyslexia. So it seemed like a weak addition to the story. On the flip side, I did like Lumen. She wasn't up for taking crap from anyone and kinda went with the flow. She stood up when she needed to - especially to the creep VP at the school and to Alec when needed as well. So I did like her background with the foster care and working at the foster home and really trying to help one of the foster girls, Soliel. She seemed like a well developed character who I enjoyed reading about though I definitely didn't enjoy the way Alec treated her. And by now I've read the 3rd book as well.... meh. But that's a separate review. ;)

This is the second book in the series....or the third if you read the prequel beforehand. After a serious incident during lunchtime, Evanne’s school closes for a few days to give all pupils and staff a much needed break. Alec decides to take Evanne to stay with his family for a few days and the pair of them enjoy their downtime. But just as Alec and Lumen’s romance is beginning to blossom, Keli drops yet another bombshell by returning to the US for good minus her Italian boyfriend that she was so enamoured with, enough to basically give up her daughter. However Keli wants to play happy families and she wants to rekindle her relationship with Alec, for ‘Evanne’s sake’ and Alec being Alec, always put his daughters welfare first. Lumen is understatedly heartbroken at the typical Alec style text that she receives. But can a relationship between two people that don’t actually like each other never mind love, really be in Evanne’s best interest? And Keli is determined to make poor Lumen’s life as difficult as possible. This is an excellent continuation of the series. You can’t help rooting for Lumen and desperately hoping that Alec will come to his senses. Keli is definitely up to something but as of yet her motives are unclear. Oooh this is getting so good! Well written as always and interesting throughout. We get to know a little more about Alec’s relatives too. Fantastic!
Still dealing with that not quite so "happy ending"
Breaking Rules is the second book in The Scottish Billionaire continuing story of Alec and Lumen. Alec now has Evanne after Keli left her with him. He is starting to get the hang of being an actual Dad instead of a weekend sitter. Lumen is Evanne's teacher and she is sweet, loving and caring towards them both. But when Keli pops her evil head back up wanting a second chance, "for the sake of Evanne", it seems like Alec is going to take a huge step backwards leaving Lumen out in the cold. But things start happening once Keli comes back and not in the good way. Add in the fact that Lumen is having issues at the school after a rumor started that her very legitimate massage therapist job offered a "happy ending" to their customers. Poor Lumen is fighting it on all fronts it seems in this part as there is a lot going on which affects her and which she does not have control over. The story continuation is nicely handled even with Keli's popping back up into Alec's life. He should have known right from the start that he could not trust her as far he could throw her. On to the third part of the story to see what happens next and whether Alec, Lumen and Evanne get their great big HEA.
well since the prequel we know that Alec and Kelli are not a match but they had unprotected sex and she is now pregnant..... so he is going to try ... well in Off Limits they try it doesn't work but sadly there are mixed moments at one point they are divorced and yet in others they never married they just tried to make things work. off to book 3 the end of their story so to speak and it's more of the same drama between him Kelli and now Lumen.......... Alec is sadly cruel to Lumen. for me it seems this part of the 3 book series, Lumen is treated like an afterthought or was only for sexual fun.... third of the way into the book his ex comes back and he doesn’t know how to let go of even how to break things off.. a grown man no less........ yet at the very end of the book Lumen just forgives everything and takes him back. Any strong woman would have told him to take a flying leap after the way she was treated throughout this book.... but as we all know these are fictional romance so author gets crazy :) I dislike trashing a book or author yet this series had nothing going for it in my opinion ...I'm not sure if Ms. Parker was just having an off time or what ... this is not her normal process in her books .....
When taking this ARC from Booksprout, I thought I was getting a second book in a series about Scottish Billionaires, PLURAL. Each book about a different billionaire and the woman he loves. So here I am reading the second book in a continuing series about his daughter's school teacher Lumen Browne and Scottish billionaire Alec McCrae. After a violent scare, Alex and his daughter Evanne make a trip to visit his parents and to get his head straight about his feelings for Lumen. His ex shows up wanting a second chance for the sake of their daughter and problems start. The book was well paced and these 2 have great chemistry. I know if I had read the first book, this would have been a more enjoyable read, but I liked this book well enough to go back and get book 1 with my KU Subscription and read for free.

Alec and Lumen are still getting their hold on what they are to one another when his ex comes back in the picture. He continues to see Lumen briefly while his ex is in town but suddenly ends thing when his ex mentions trying again. He thinks he owes it to their daughter to at least try. Heartbroken Lumen knew it was coming and tries to be understanding. However when things she told Alec in confidence are told to bosses at the school Lumen is upset. This makes things strained between them when they run into each other around school. Will Alec see that his ex is a problem? Will he lose Lumen for good?
This is a great story that will captivate you from beginning to end. This is a well written and very entertaining story. I would recommend this book to any book lover.

Absolutely awful. I do not understand where the high reviews come from. From page 1 of this book, Alec is downright cruel to Lumen. Every step of the way he drops her without a second thought. Lumen is treated like garbage by Alec throughout this entire book. One third of the way into the book I already hated him. Then his ex comes back and he can’t even respect Lumen enough to see her or call her to break things off?! No, he is a slime ball through and through and dumps her in a text message. Alec treats Lumen like a complete doormat from the first page of this book to the last. He had zero redeeming qualities and yet at the very end of the book Lumen just forgives everything and takes him back. Inexcusable. Any strong woman would have told him to take a flying leap after the way she was treated throughout this book. This series is utter trash, and there’s no way anyone should waste their time on this series.

This is the story of two people hooking up a few times. Neither of them seemed to be overly bothered at their lack of togetherness. They both have their own lives with their own issues. They occasionally cross paths and seem to like each other well enough. It’s only at the very end that they decide to, once again, give a real relationship a shot. Last time they made this choice, it just got forgotten about.
To drag this out into two books is insulting to fans of this author. I don’t mind cliffhangers, but that’s not what this is. I skimmed about 70% of this book because I got sick of the inner dialogue and rehashing of their lives, both past and present.
I’ll move on the third book only because it’s included with my Kindle Unlimited. If I had to pay for the book separately there’s no way I’d waste more money on it. Maybe it will offer some kind of satisfaction but I’m not holding out much hope.
And the plot thickens! Mama Keli is back and not exactly in her best behavior. She is as frustrating as ever! And Alec, although a good man and great father, still needs to learn how to manage a relationship other than like a business transaction. He should know better from previous experience with Keli that if he doesn't nip it in the bud, it will become a major problem later on. He thinks he is in control, but there is more to come. If a woman scorned can be a she devil herself, imagine a selfish jealous one on top of it. Not even putting their daughter first, has been an excuse to avoid disaster. But even with some disappointing characters the author always delivers some delicious heat up sexy scenes. And still, Lumen manages to be the calm and mature constant that everyone that matters need.
Alec and Lumen are back for the next installment of this series. You will need to read book one (and I also recommend the prequel) before starting this one or you will be so lost. It is not a standalone so shouldn’t be treated as such.
Just when we thought we got out happy ending with Alex and Lumen Keli pops back into the picture. If you read the prequel, you already know that Keli and Alec May have made the perfect daughter together but they don’t belong together. Of course Alec pushes Lumen away though thinking he’s doing what’s best for Evanne. I never understand why characters make these decisions, if they are miserable so will their children.
Throw in manipulation and enough drama to make you want to rip your hair out and you have this story.
I received an advanced copy of this book through BookSprout and am leaving a voluntary honest review.
I loved Breaking Rules, part two in the Scottish Billionaire Series by M.S. Parker. Part two picks up where part one left off and we have Lumen and Alec still craving each other. But an incident at his daughter's school brings Kelly, Alec's ex back into the picture. Kelly wants another chance at being a family but Alec is torn. Who does he choose? His daughter has to be his priority but is he willing to sacrifice the first woman he has really cared about? When Alec tells her they need a break while he figures things out, Lumen is hurt but she refuses to let Alec know how hurt she is. She is also still dealing with her obnoxious Vice President at the school constantly flirting with her. When she thinks Alec betrays her, she remembers why she cannot risk her heart. To be continued. Looking forward to more!
With an abrupt ending from book 1 it takes awhile for the 2nd to pick up again. I wondered what drama would come to this story... Well plenty apparently.
An incident at the school takes place leaving both Alec and Lumen rattled, but it’s the events following that really start tearing them apart. Lumen tries to be help a troubled teenager, Soleil (foster kid), but in doing so Alec makes Lumen feel she is not a priority. And this is only heightened when Keli (Evanne’s mother) comes back into the picture. She tries to discredit her at work, because of her jealousy.
Again there is very little communication between these two main characters that I feel go unresolved. Alec is torn between giving his daughter a life he feels she deserves, but also not having his heart committed entirely to the situation. Lumen struggles with not being enough and loved entirely to be someone’s priority.
This read ends with Alec wanting to have a committed relationship and letting Evanne and Keli know.
