Born in 1993, HDA gained his obsession with fantasy, magic & sci-fi early in his life with the help of his parents and life long friend Joanna. Giving him the first book he ever truly read alone, Joanna set him off with a story that has inspired him even now. Lord Loss by Darren Shan. Having grown up with scotopic syndrome, and the challenges he faced with reading and processing information. Books were the one thing that HDA was able to learn and use to grow out of his need for coloured glasses and overlays on his work. Reading nightly, with many years of help from his mum, HDA admits his writing may never be perfect. A note at the beginning of all of his works, he asks his readers if they can make it past the slight errors that he alone has edited, they will be granted with the stories he, as a storyteller has crafted for them.
With more books flowing out of him daily, HDA cannot wait to spread his stories, it’s characters and their adventures with the world.
When I was a kid, I read a lot of fantasy books that involved normal humans (usually siblings or a group of friends) somehow falling into a magical world, discovering they're "special" in some way, and going on a quest through this new environment. Maybe the fantasy world grew tired of the trope since these types of stories seem to be less popular now, but I always had a soft spot for them.
"Worthy" brings that back in a good way. The world has an interesting concept, and I wish there had been more worldbuilding - though I expect that's coming in the rest of the series. Given the importance of elemental magic, the comparison in my mind to the "Avatar: The Last Airbender" show felt unavoidable at times. But given the "quest" feeling of that series as well, it's a complimentary comparison; there are also plenty of other aspects to the fantasy world which come as a pleasant surprise. I enjoyed that the story doesn't shy away from commenting on real-world issues, which I think is a mark of good fiction no matter where it's set.
If there's a downside, it's that I didn't really care for the writing style. The rhythms of the sentences felt distracting to me, which is a shame, because I think I would have been able to connect with the characters more if the narration didn't keep pulling me out of the story. But this is very much a personal preference and shouldn't dissuade you from giving it a try if it sounds interesting to you.
One of the things that I like about fantasy books that are grounded in the real world is the simple ways that an author can make even the most magical and fantastical moments seem completely realistic.
That's exactly the case here. HDA Pratt has crafted a world with some brilliantly multi-layered characters. The writing even deals with some really heavy duty parts such as racism, sexism and more but with a deft and subtle hand.
The relationships between the characters really come across as realistic, as if they truly are the best of friends. Because of that, there's a realy sense of childlike wonderul and amazement at the things that happen during the story. I loved that for the simple fact that it gave it an emotional tint that you sometimes don't find in books in this genre.
There is a really nice vein of humour running through the book as well. Some of them had me laughing to such an extent that I had to put the book down for a moment.
Talking of putting the book down, the almost lyrical style of writing from Pratt meant that it was an easy read and one that I wanted to continue. It really was one of those 'just one more page' type books.
All in all, this is a superb novel and one I will definitely read again.
A brilliant read with twists and turns around every corner. These characters are so multi levelled that I felt for them with everything they went through.avid drawing me in, HDA has filled this world with it so much I can’t wait for more!
