This one was such a quick read for me!! I loved it and all the hilarious antics these kids got up to!! Robin and his friends go on a road trip together to some pretty cool places. We get to encounter orangutans, monkeys, and some awesome sounding food!!

This is a light, outlandish story and I found it hilarious. The kids, especially Charlie, are so dramatic about everything, which makes the situations they run into even funnier! I did roll my eyes at their extravagant displays of wealth, but that was part of why I enjoyed this so much.

If grammatical errors are a no go for you, stay away from this one as it’s written from the point of view of a middle schooler. It didn’t bother me, but I know some readers just can’t stand it.

Anyway, I also thought the drawings were so cute!! They were like drawings of the moment as imagined by Robin. Very well drawn and entertaining!

I did notice that they didn’t mention the shark from the first book so I was a little sad about that. I mean, if a rampaging shark was trying to ruin my vacation, I’d remember and talk about it for years!!! Just saying.

Otherwise, I recommend this to middle grade lovers who like light, funny reads.

Thanks so much to the author, Malcolm Mejin, for the opportunity to read this for my honest and unbiased opinion.

~ ebook provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Man... I feel bad for rating this 2 stars. It has the same style of writing and illustrations as the diary of a wimpy kid. Though I liked the diary of a wimpy kid, I didn’t feel much for this one.

I think this book is best read by middle graders (to whom this was intended).

The narrator, Robin, felt like an adult imitating a middle grade kid. So, there was a cringe factor. Most of the time, the book felt like a handbook to Kuching. I mean, I’m not against learning about a new place but there was too much explanation and the plot was over the top. Flying cars? You can open the trunk of the flying car from the outside? Smh.
Charlie was so annoying and Robin was too much like an adult. At times, even Robin can’t believe that he’s crazy rich lol. The plot always revolves around something happening to Charlie.
Middle graders may enjoy this though.

Total time spent: 1h 45min.

First up! Thanx to the author for the e-book!
Book 2 like book 1 is also good and was a very fun read
This book tells a story of a road trip of Robin (the main character) with his rich parents, his dramatic/rich friend Charlie, down-to-earth Ken, IG obsessed Siti and essay-writing genius Chloe.
I've never been to Kuching, so it was a pretty good experience reading about its wildlife, village and food adventures from a rich kid's point of view.

I've already reviewed the first book in this series in great detail, focussing on its characters, illustrations, language, similarity to Wimpy Kid, etc. So I'll restrict my feedback only to the story of this second book. The rest of the feedback remains the same as before.

Road Trip reunites us with the two rich spoilt brats from book one, Robin and Charlie. This time, Robin's dad offers to take the kids on a road trip. Of course, their road trip isn't like the one we mere mortals go on. It's one luxury after another.

Let's begin with the positives. One part of the trip includes information on the Bidayuh group of Sarawak, Malaysia. I really appreciated that section. The author must capitalise on his Malay heritage and use it as a differentiating factor in these books instead of repeating Americanisms a la the Wimpy Kid series.(Of course, the latter is justified in doing it as it is written by an American.)

There are some fun moments in this book too, though not as many as in the first book. The humour seems very forced and after a point, iterative. The jokes are mainly about food and animals and looks. In fact, the look obsession goes a step too far in this book. The parents and kids seem to be obsessed with looking "hot" and view others primarily by their physical attributes. I hope younger readers will realise that the book must be taken as sarcastic and not aspirational.

Even the illustrations take the same repetitive tone and don't add much to the story. They just serve the purpose of representing everyone's thoughts at others' comments. Some of the illustrations grossed me out.

The title indicates that the book will be about a road trip. But there's hardly anything about a road trip inside. Most of the book is about visits to animal sanctuaries, luxury dining and shopping. The title isn't really justified. (Maybe the author could read "The Long Haul", book 9 of the Wimpy Kid series to understand what a true road trip book would entail.) For this book, a title indicating something about vacations or roughing it out or family trips would have been more suitable.

All in all, this wasn't a bad book but it wasn't a must-read either. If you need to give this series a try, you may check out book one as that was much better and funnier than this one. Of course, if you want something truly hilarious, go for the Wimpy Kid series.

I received a free digital copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Diary of A Rich Kid: Road Trip follows the three good friends and their two friends, Siti and Chloe, with Robin’s parents went for their adventure road trip around Sarawak. I have never been to Sarawak, so I have learned a lot about Sarawak from this book. The author did a fantastic job in introducing Sarawak to the readers. I love reading about the places they visit, such as Semenggoh Wildlife Centre and Bako National Park. I also love the food they eat during the trip, such as Sarawak Laksa and the king of fruit, durian 😋

Their road trip is so fun! With the pandemic situation now, it's so enjoyable to read the story about a road trip. It felt like I was on the road trip with them 🤩 . Frankly, I enjoyed this book more than the first one. The road trip contains more exciting information about Sarawak, which I wish to be one day.

Both titles do not only consist of the story about the kids and their unexpected incidents but also conveys some of the essential life lessons about the power of family and friendship.

Thank you, the author, for providing me ebooks in return for an honest review 😊

I feel bad for rating it like this..but it's what I felt.
My first impression of this book was annoying. The main characters in this book are the same as those depicted by the title. A child of the rich family that main point is all about money. How the main character is always bragging about money belonging to the family. Personally, I kinda dislike it.

Graphic novels are my favorite genre, but unfortunately this book doesn’t give me much satisfaction. Reading this book always reminds me of the book Diary of a wimpy kid which surprisingly I enjoy reading it more than this book.

There is an incomplete sentence on page 4 "Manda is to a wealthy tycoon named Alibaba, who hails from Saudi Arabia"

Something is missing, what exactly they trying to say there?

However i do like the main ideas about the trip. How the author promote Kuching in this book.

I guess this book is not for me.

.
Sangat 'enjoy' bila membaca kisah mereka

I love below quote:
“ Sometimes , good to go back to the basics and appreciate simple things more . “

Another fun and adventure story about Robin , Charlie and Ken . This time they went for a road trip in Sarawak with Robin’s parent and their two friends - Siti and Chloe . They’ve been to many places in Sarawak such as :
📍Semenggoh Wildlife Centre
📍Bako National Park
📍Plaza Merdeka Mall
📍Sarawak Cultural Village

They also went for food hunting such as:
📍Sarawak Laksa
📍Musang King Durian
📍TopSpot Seafood - eat Midin , Oh Chien , Balitong
📍Sunny Hill Ice Cream

Until, something bad happened to Charlie while they visiting Sarawak Cultural Village . He been kidnapped . 😱. The questions is : Why Charlie is the target ? Who is behind Charlie kidnapped ? Can they save Charlie?

Even this book is a fun book to read . For me the author Malcolm did a good job by introducing nice places and food in Sarawak . Tbh , I feel like I’m also went for a road trip with them because I never been to Sarawak yet. 🙈😅🙈. Despite of the fun storyline, there are also reminders for us :
📖 Spent more time with family while you still have a chance.
📖 We live in a country with diverse races , culture and religions. Therefore, we should respect and be kind to everyone.
📖Sometimes , we need to turn off all the gadgets and just look around . Enjoy they beauty of our country . Enjoy the beauty of nature.
📖 Keep maintaining healthy lifestyle by eat in moderate portion and exercise .
📖 Money can’t solve everything. Money can’t even buy happiness.
📖 A simple life can bring much more happiness , less stress and make us appreciate our life more.

Seriously , I like this book . Totally a fun and informative book to read - really suitable for all age . 😊. Thank you Malcolm for sending me the ebook in return with honest review.

Membaca Diary of a Rich Kid (Road Trip) waktu lockdown macam ni, memang lah sesuatu yang mengujakan!

That's a wild road trip.
I like how the story is set to a local place like Kuching. The second book is also a low key cultural trip in Malaysia. Nice one!
I like how the author used fruits, food and animals that in indigenous to the setting. The illustrations helped a lot (both for fun and reference) . I have to Google balitong, midin and sawarak laksa so I can really understand the characters reaction and descriptions. That's Educational! (Robin's Dad will approve 'wink' ). Apparently, we have similar food in my own local place. Different names but still the same. Durian is the best! ❤️ I can agree on this one. This is not expensive if you're in the local. But really rare and expensive for the other big cities.
Maybe if I compare this to other books, which it is inspired from, I will miss the sense of Asian-ness of the book and the cultural differences. The adventure is something that really happens on a kids' mind. The main audience are middle-aged school kids. Having a rich and perfect dad, and crazy prefect friends, yeah that's so asian, too. So imaginative.

The author send me the ecopy. And this is my honest review.

Thank you @Malcolm Mejin for sending me this ebook. 🤩🤩
PKP 2.0 start yesterday, we should stay at home and stay safe, so reading this light novel aslike giving me a great time. Me, nonstop laughing. 😂😂 Actually, this novel brought me on vacation around Sarawak that the last time I go there is 2010 and now is 2021 year. That's along time ago and reading this novel make me missed to go there.
🌸When you read my short review about this book, please don't laugh at me or judge me because everything in this book I got so many new information, experience and adventure.
🌸This sequel have a new character, Chloe, Siti and Devi which are Robin girl friends. Chloe and Siti join the trip with Robin family and of course his best friend ever too, Ken and Charlie.
🌸Charlie aslike always such a dramatic boys, paranoid with everything and his screaming can be aslike a music 🎶for Robin😂.
🌸Robin having a quality time with his beloved parent that always busy with their work. Actually this trip was Robin's dad idea which is he really missed to spend time with his only one son. I think this is the chance for them to get closed again.
🌸Yep, the scene that I never forget is when Charlie got kissed on his forehead by Orang Utan called James on. 😂
🌸Next, I think this novel are full with information which are writer take us as reader go to Bako National Park,Semenggoh Wildlife Central, Sarawak Cultural Village and others. Among that place, Sarawak Cultural Village is the most I want to go because we can learn the different ethnic groups and their cultural.
🌸This book are good to read for every people at any age because this novel full with moral value and information that everybody can learnt. For example, the significant having a quality time with family, taught us how to reduce stress by take a short walk by seeing the nature, me as a reader got many info about our local place which is we should be proud as a Malaysian.
🌸Writer never left behind about our local food. Robin really love Sarawak Laksa, even he is from rich family, he always choose our local food. Mustang King! Talk about it, at first, Ken doesn't like Musang King but once he try to eat by Charlie force him 'obviously' 😂, Ken want more and more.
🌸The plot of the story are going smoothly but insudden Charlie was kidnapped by someone? And I'm not gonna to tell spoiler. 😁And for sure is kidnapped have a relate with Charlie stepdad, Alibaba. Wanna know? You gais should read this book. No regret.. Serious...
🌸Obviously I giving 5 stars for this light novel because I'm having fun experience while read this novel. Good job to the writer Malcolm Meijin for writing this happening novel. 😍😍😍

Road Trip is a wholesome story about friendship, courage and how life is so much better surrounded with those you love most. Robin and his friends as accompanied by his parents embark on a road trip around Kuching, Sarawak as they learned about their cultures, made new furry friends and eat delicious local delicacies.

I like the pace of this book better as compared to the first book. I like that they decided to go on a road trip around Kuching and it felt like I too was travelling along with them, visiting the many interesting and fabulous places Kuching has to offer.

With this story, I was introduced to new characters as well as old ones. Robin decided to invite along two of his friends from school, Siti and Chloe and they made the story much more interesting. Of course, his friends that I've read about in the first book, Charlie and Ken is interesting as well but it feels like it elevated the entire book.

This author truly brings a story that is so full of adventure that is thrilling and excitement. It's also heartwarming because a journey may not be as exciting and fun when you're alone but when you tag along your friends and family, nothing is unstoppable. If you're looking out for more middle grade books that is fun, I recommend you this one.

Thanks to the author for providing me with an e-copy in exchange for an honest review!

Compared to the first one, I definitely like this one better. It was a light and fun read which was just what I needed.

I love that in this book Robin and his friends explored around Sarawak instead of going overseas. It was so nice to see local food mentioned, especially when they went to that seafood restaurant called TopSpot. Apparently, I looked it up and it was a real place - I might even go there to eat if I ever go to visit Sarawak 😂😂.

There was a diverse cast of characters in this book, including friends that were of varying races.

However, the writing style was a bit repetitive in the two books and that made it a bit mundane? In addition, the characters in this book are super rich and obviously I couldn't relate to them, which made me less connected to them though that doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad thing because it was good fun to see them spend their money on ridiculous stuff haha.

This series isn't what I'd normally pick up in a bookstore so I'm grateful to the author for giving me an opportunity to review them. This book sends out an important message to all of us: money isn't everything and our friendships and family are far more important than that.

"I also have a habit of uploading food photos to my Facebook and Instagram—but I was so devoted to my Sarawak Laksa that I didn’t even want to spare a second doing the whole social media thing. I wanted to enjoy the moment of eating this “piece of art”, that seemed to be delivered from the heavens."

It turned out that this book took me more fast time to finish because I think I can enjoy the story more here (perhaps because it also happens because there is no deadline on my schedule).

This is the second book in the Diary of a Rich Kid series and I think the story can be read separately even though the characters here are still related and the same. But in this story I can say it's more fresh because it brings new characters and new nuances.

Instead of the vibes of crazy rich people, here we will be presented with descriptions of very exotic places and also some food that make you want to try them. So it's more like vacation or summer vibes here. I also prefer the conflict that is here compared to the previous book and I think the portion is just right, either from the adventure, the humor, and the splash of crazy rich elements.

However, here I encountered an odd thing that seemed as if it was included in the story just to make a possible solution if we think about it actually such a thing is impossible. But I think it's completely fine.

And thank you to the author who has given this book to me and is patiently willing to wait for me to continue this book with a distance of about 3 months. Thank you and glad to know your books! I can't wait for your other book, Malcolm!

3.5 stars

thank you to the writer who reached out to me thru GR with a pdf copy of his books in exchange for reviews.
This also included cute illustrations that seemed basic but in keeping w/overall look of book (ie. printed story on lined paper like composition notebook)

Another adventure w/the 3 stoodges. Robin & his pals-Charlie & Ken are off on another adventure.
This time-Charlie is-perish the thought- FORCED to walk home from school when his chauffer is unable to pick him up. ARGGHHH...the horror!!!! (hee hee)
They're also on a road trip of Kuching for the school holidays. Adding along their 2 besties gal pals-Chloe & Siti. Nice addition of characters.
As I've never been to Malaysia, I liked reading about the food & culture of the country as they went on their sightseeing trip. It was informative & the descriptions painted a good picture.
the ending was a little ridiculous but it's a kids book so there you go...

Overall, another cute, sweet story of family & friends.

Road Trip (Diary of a Rich Kid, #2) by Malcolm Mejin
Malcolm Mejin

Thank you to Malcolm Mejin for providing me an e-copy of this novel for my honest review.

Overall: 2/5
Characters: 3/5
Plot and Theme: 2/5
Writing, Graphic and Setting: 2.5/5

*Content Warning: some bullying, examples of obnoxious behaviour*

Gist of my review: Still have the feelings of recognition and reflection towards the ‘Diary of a Whimpy Kid’ and ‘Crazy Rich Asians’. This is a middle grade graphic novel which has elements that I think aren’t appropriate for that audience.

Summary:
The gang is back together, but this time Robin’s parents are taking the boys, and their friends, Siti and Chloe, on a road trip that turns into a journey of discovery of local sites from their home, Sarawak. The trip takes a turn for the worst when they encounter orangutans and monkeys in the wildlife and their friend mysteriously goes missing.

Characters: 3/5

The three boys are very much the same in this book. For me, Charlie seemed a little bit more annoying for some reason, but I liked the inclusion of Siti and Chloe. I think they brought a nice and new dynamic to the story.

Plot and Theme: 2/5

The plot and writing style were a little tedious and repetitive for me, and I also felt that there were times where this book became an educational brochure on the sites of Sarawak, but it was interesting to learn about a place that I haven’t been to before and to further explore a culture I don’t know all that much about.

One thing I was particularly disappointed in was the fact that there seemed to be a central theme around how the characters looked and whether they were ‘hot. There was point where there were some rather narky remarks on other people, and that’s not something that I would particularly want my child to think is normal or appropriate behaviour.

Apart from the things I have listed above, I think this is a better middle age novel than the first in this series.

Writing, Graphics, and Setting: 2.5/5

The writing was easy and definitely something that the 8 – 12-year-old audience would probably enjoy. Again, I think there needs to be more editing done to this book just like in the first, but I understand that professional editing for an indie author isn’t necessarily cheap.

As I mentioned before in this review, there were moments where the book felt as if it had become a tour guide description/ education brochure, and I think that’s because the author tried to put a lot of facts in and played it off like it was a part of the story.

I didn’t enjoy the graphics all that much this time. In the previous book I found them more entertaining.

Conclusion:

There are elements that I liked more about this book and others that I didn’t. Either way I didn’t particularly have high hopes for this book, and I think that may have led to me being very critical whilst reviewing it.

Pros- Fast paced, easy and humorous read
Cons- Some content warnings
Overall- 2/5

Another holiday, another adventure for Robin, Charlie and Ken. A road trip around Sarawak. Plus, Robin's dad was thoughtful. He planned this trip just to spend time with his son.

This time, I got to know more Sarawak delicacy and places to visit. I really love to visit Bako National Park someday.

I laughed a lot while reading this. This is the kind of story you want to read when you want to experience something surreal and hilarious. It doesn't make sense but it's nice to see that everything is connected and wrapped the story nicely.

Thanks Malcolm for giving me the ebook. I appreciate.

It is very informative books! I like Robin and friends' trip to Bako National Park. I was giggled when Charlie at the National Park. Why the animal love him so much. But I really love the whole of the story, very heartwarming and entertaining. It shows no matter how rich you are, if you surround by your friend and family, you still having a good spend time. Although, their lifestyle didnt relate on me.

Another well written piece by Malcolm Mejin!

SPOILER ALERT!
The book started slow for me, I felt like the part where meeting Chief Minister, the 1 million horse, arent necessary until...I get to the end of the book! Now every small details make sense!

This book is a nice guide for those who wanted to do day-trip in Sarawak. As a Sarawakian myself, the places mentioned are legit including the TopSpot menu! So it wasnt only my family but the rest of Sarawakian ordered them too 😂 (now I feel like eating oyster pancake 😳).

This book is simply 4/5 due to the extensive vocab and the storylines are not your typical, definitely suits younger readers ☺️

The 2nd book in the ' Diary of a Rich Kid : Roadtrip!

Gist of it was for Robin's parents to spend some time with Robin so roadtrip was the plan so Robin invite some of his friends along. Charlie, Ken, Siti and Claire. To appreciate about nature and learn more about wildlife, they went to a number of place in Sarawak to explore. And Malcolm never fail to explore the food too 😋
Anyways, throughout the roadtrip experience, I really enjoyed the story.. some events with the monkeys! It was an enjoyable read for me.
And then tragedy strikes, something really bad happened to the most dramatic boy. Kidnapped!
Why was Charlie kidnapped? I think maybe he's being too dramatic that's why! To know, you gotta read this book!
As well as the first book, Malcolm has include some moral values in his books. For this book is for us to slow down our pace and take a look around us and appreciate our nature. And most importantly for me was the friendship bond. Even we might find a friend or two of ours are so dramatic and all, but when we love them, we love them.

**Abit of spoiler: like when Robin said "my Charlie!!!" 🤣 **

But also like in the first book, Robin's character wasn't explored much. Charlie was the main attraction again. It's not that I mind or anything. Charlie is a fun character! But Robin should have his moment too because he is the main character.

Again, thanx Malcolm Mejin for giving me this opportunity to read and review your books! I honestly do enjoy them! 🤗

It's a Road Trippp!!! Even though it is quite depressing reading about trip story during this pendamic and MCO period 😆, but it so nice to at least imagining the experience. And you know what, at the end of the reading, actually I'm thinking it would be fantastic if this road trip would be a short drama for all to watch. Must be great 👍🏻.

This is the second book of Diary of A Rich Kid series, and honestly, I love this one more❤️

I found this book to be informative and entertaining at the same time because it introduced several tourist attractions at Kuching which are very useful for me as a non-Malaysian. As well as local foods that look so mouthwatering (from the illustrations), like Sarawak Laksa, Durian, etc.

A beautiful quote from this book :
"It taught us to appreciate simple things more, like the beauty of nature that has always existed in our neighborhood. It was just that we never took the time to notice it."

Thank you to the author for giving me a chance to review this book!

Light, hilarious and fun to read!

It's been a loooong time since I went on a road trip. I wish this pandemic will be over soon 😭😭
This book follows the adventure of Robin, his family and his friends going on a road trip in local area in Sarawak.
Very informative and gives more exposure about food, places in Sarawak, cultural diversity in Malaysia, and many more. The plot is better than the previous book and I like the twist in the final plot! Overall, this is a good book for young readers and I think I'll enjoy it better if I was a kid!

Yet another story filled with adventure starring Robin, Charlie and Ken. This time, Robin's parents and their two friends, Siti and Chloe, also joined their adventure as they embark on a road trip around Kuching, Sarawak.

I have never been to Sarawak before so I have learned a lot about Sarawak from this book. It truly felt as if I was on the road trip with them. I love reading about the places they go to and the local foods they eat during their road trip. The road trip is going well, disregarding a few incidents involving an overly-affectionate orangutan and a sly proboscis monkey. However, things actually started to get wild towards the end of the book. I was so immersed in reading about how they are going to solve the problem and it was super exciting.

This book is just as funny and exciting as the first book and if you're a young reader or need a light read, I would highly recommend this book!

Robin is stoked his parents are letting him bring his friends along on their road trip, walking through a gorgeous national park, meeting orangutans and enjoying fine cuisine - but Charlie is sure there's something lurking close by...something that could threaten more than their vacation. Mejin's themes of friendship and culture do little to strengthen a tedious plot led by undeveloped characters and an abhorrent use of slang and brands. What sort of exciting things can the group accomplish before school starts up again?
