3.5 - "You're in paradise... The fun never ends." Stars.

The third book in Maggie McGuiniss’ Echo Lake series serves up a little wilderness fun, with four pampered private school princesses being banished to the wilds of Vermont, for the summer, as a result of being caught out misbehaving whilst at Briarwood Academy.

Little do Sam, Eve, Madison and Waverly realize that the summer they spend at Camp Echo with their housemother Gabriela O’Brien, will have far reaching effects on them as friends, and on Gabi, in pretty much every conceivable way possible.

"I want the rom-com ending… I wasn’t to take the journey and earn my happy ending, but I want that happy ending."

Enter Luke Magellan, he has made Camp Echo home, but having been purchased by the board of Briarwood Academy, massive changes are afoot, and what was once a place dedicated to the care and development of troubled teens, now looks like it’s going to be turned into a resort for the pampered few, something Luke isn’t best pleased about, and the arrival of Gabi and her girls rubs additional salt into the wounds.

"You need to work with me, not against me."

I loved the outside/wilderness aspect of this book, and I loved the way Luke managed to push the girls so far out of their comfort zones, that in doing so they became genuine friends, and shirked off the Mean-Girl persona’s that they originally arrived with. The growth for them, and the story with Luke and them was what kept me reading for the most part.

Once again it was the author’s characterization of her female lead that left me a little dissatisfied, and what was bearable in the first half of the book, became a little annoying as the story progressed through to its finish, and that issue is the fact that Gabi was the most self-centred person of all the females in the story and a bit of a whiner at times. And seeing as she was responsible for four teenage girls that is not what I was expecting. It started with small things, but with almost each and every situation she found herself involved in or dealing with as the book progressed she pretty much managed to make it about her, and I really struggled to understand why Luke was wasting his time with her over and above the responsibility he felt in helping her with the girls.

"I like you just the way you are…"

The relationship developing between them was more friends to me really, and the constant bolstering Luke had to do, as well as dealing with her non-stop questioning of everything he did took away any emotion that may have potentially been building between them, particularly in the latter stages of the story.

"Do you want me? Because I have to tell you, there is nothing in the world I want more than you right now."

I have read a large number of books by this author, and for the most part She’s Got a Way was of the standard I expect from her in relation to the story, and characters, Gabi being a challenge to like or empathize with, did take a little bit of enjoyment from the story for me, but not enough that I didn’t in general enjoy what I was reading. I think as a reader it was more frustration because of the repetition of certain things she did or the way she behaved, without seemingly learning anything from past experience.

I hope this isn’t our last visit to Echo Lake, the series in general has been enjoyable to get into so far, with lots of secondary characters still with stories to be told.

Series: Echo Lake Series (standalone)

:: 5 Pretty Little Stars ::

She’s Got a Way is another beautiful, sweet, and classy romance from one of my favorite authors, Maggie McGinnis. While I was reading, I fell in love with Echo Lake all over again. The town is filled with the most charmingly real characters, and each have touched my heart in many ways. This one in particular though is by far my favorite book of this series. I absolutely loved everything about it. The plot, the characters, the blooming love story, and the beautiful scenery. Maggie McGinnis knows how to bring her readers into a story and she does a fine job of describing the setting- gosh, I wish there was an Echo Lake in my town! With that being said, I think everyone should pick up a book by Maggie McGinnis. If you do, you are guaranteed to find yourself in a beautiful place surrounded by charming people and heart melting love.

This addition to the Echo Lake series (which can be read as a standalone) tells the love story between Luke and Gabi. Luke is the director of a boy’s camp right on Echo Lake and Gabi is the “housemother” to the girls at Briarwood Academy- a place that caters to rich teenage girls. Both Luke and Gabi love their jobs. But both are in for a surprise when Gabi is forced to take 4 of her girls to camp Echo when they are caught doing bad things. Thankfully for these three girls, the boys camp is closed for “renovations” for the summer so they won’t have to be surrounded by hormonal delinquents. However, these girls must navigate their own lives and relationships in order to get back on the right track. With Luke and Gabi’s help, this can all happen. But when a fire ignites, and secrets about what is happening to the camp come to light, they have to fight some demons they never expected.

Overall, this is a wonderful and heartwarming story. Every time I pick up a book by Maggie I know I am in for a beautiful ride. She never disappoints in her writing and I always end up falling in love with the characters and Echo Lake. In addition to this, this series is one that I can read forever and ever. I honestly hope that the author will continue with it because I always look forward to the next installment. With that being said, I highly recommend this book. In fact, I recommend ALL of Maggie’s books!

Special thanks to the publishers for allowing me to read an ARC of this novel.

Link to full review below! She's Got a Way
Maggie McGinnis

This is my first Maggie McGinnis book, but I can say I plan to read more. She's Got a Way is exactly what you want and expect in a contemporary romance. Nothing overly angsty like new adult, no crazy supernatural elements like paranormal romance, and no MC clubs or mafia men in sight. Normal people, with normal jobs, doing normal, mundane things. Its, strangely, refreshing!

She's Got a Way is about Gabi, a 'housemother' at an all girls boarding school. 4 of her charges get into some serious trouble and as punishment, they are forced to spend 4 weeks at a 'camp'. The 'camp' is closed for upgrades. There is really NOTHING there-no cabins, no programs, no amenities. Gabi is not given the choice to supervise the girls and she had to forgo her vacation to Barbados because of the girls.

The girls were interesting. Its a boarding school, so I expected them all to be rich and bratty. However, 2 of the girls are foster kids. The girls bring some humor, some drama, and some depth to the story as they learn and grow. As a teacher, I am a total sucker for stories like this because its why people become teachers. You want to make a difference in a kids life! Anyway, I digress.

So, of course, there is a hottie 'handyman' at the camp. He was the director of programs but now that the camp is closed, he is making repairs. He resents the girls presence and plans to leave them to their own devices, but he can't quite stick to that plan. Watching Luke and Gabi's relationship develop is beautiful and well written, but even more amazing was seeing the magic Luke worked on the girls.

There were times when Gabi's attitude bothered me. She didn't want to be a poor little rich girl, but then said she couldn't imagine leaving Briarwood because its all she has ever known. She wanted to turn Briarwood into something better, which is admirable, but kind of selfish. She basically is saying Briarwood is bad; I am sure there are lots of good kids there (I mean, she was one of those kids!). I totally understand and agree with her vision, but I think she was a little misguided.

This is another "Safe for my mom" pick! McGinnis uses fade to black scenes.

POV: 3rd
Tears: no
Trope: enemies to lovers, summer romance, Fish out of water
Triggers: none
Series/Standalone: stand alone
Cliffhanger:
HEA:

Interference by Sophia Henry, Wrapped in you by Jules Bennett, Coach Maddie and the Marine by Blaire Edens...then you will probably like She's Got a Way!

Review originally posted at All Books Considered: 2.5 STARS

This is just one of those books that will not be memorable to me -- it was fine for a contemporary romance but nothing special. And the first half (before the romance really kicked in) was pretty boring. Gabi was a bit self-righteous and I found myself rolling my eyes a few times. That said, the setting is kind of fun -- set at a summer camp except it's not being run as a camp in this book, really. Instead, Gabi is somehow forced (she's the dorm mom for a prestigious boarding school) to chaperone four 'problem' girls to this camp for the summer instead of going on her planned vacation. This was the first red flag to me -- she had a planned flight and just has to drop it to chaperone these girls? Very weird. When they arrive, there are no facilities (bathrooms or campsites) and, yet, these four 16 year old girls are supposed to build bathrooms, campsites, etc. with no experience. The scenario really did not seem realistic especially for a snooty boarding school. We soon learn how awful the boarding school really is but the backgrounds of both Gabi and Luke (the on site "handyman") are really glossed over. Of course, they fall for each other even though this is made to seem like the absolute worst thing possible for both of them (again, why?). I was more or less skimming by the end and not sure I will read more by this author but you may have better luck.

She's Got A Way comes out later this month on August 30, 2016, and you can purchase HERE.

I don't slum, Luke. I don't fall for people based on their economic level or their resumes. I most certainly don't kiss people I wouldn't want to see the next morning. And I have never done the hookup thing. Ever. I don't. I won't. I kissed you because I like. I kissed you because you looked so flipping gorgeous sitting there in the moonlight that I couldn't resist kissing you. And I kept kissing you because I liked it. I liked you. It had nothing to do with vulnerability or fear or any of the other things you threw at me.

In typical Maggie McGinnis fashion, this story is sweet, heartwarming, funny, and not to be missed! She's taking us back to Echo Lake where Luke Magellan has been working hard to get his beloved Camp Echo back in operational shape. He's spent years there helping troubled boys find their way in life, giving back to them the guidance they need, just as he had needed all those years ago. The camp has been taken over by Briarwood but he's hoping to convince them to let him continue running it just as it's been for years now. Suddenly he finds himself faced with one upset woman and four angry teenage girls. Gabriela O’Brien was told she was dropping the girls at camp. A camp they were being sent to because of some trouble they had found themselves in. What she finds isn't a camp at all. No cabins, no bathrooms....nothing!! How can she leave these four girls here? Luke is just as surprised at the arrival of the four spoiled rich girls and can't believe anyone would send them here. But here they are and he will just have to deal with it. Besides, watching these ladies deal with the rugged outdoors might be quite entertaining. Getting to know the lovely Gabriela is just a side benefit!

I highly recommend this one!!

When a group of group of four prep-school girls have finally crossed the line, they’re a hair away from expulsion. Instead, they’re subjected to a seemingly worse fate. The board of directors at the school decide that the girls will be camping (no cabins!) for four weeks as a consequence for their actions. The rest of the book follows the girls tentative team building, unveiling secrets, and Gabi, the girl’s housemother, who’s actually the main character of the book, dealing with a no-lesson plans summer camp, a vacation that is no more, and one hot as hell camp handyman who has a whole lot more to him than meets the eye.

First off, I had astronomical hopes for this book. And in general, the book, the characters, the love, the life (whoops, hello Pinterest quotes) fell a bit flat for me. I think the plot itself is incredibly adorable, and I even liked the characters. And by characters I mean especially Luke. Luke who vaguely reminded me of the Luke from The Bachelorette. All country bad boys who is good with his hands. He compliments our main girl rather well, I think.

Here is where my complaints begin—the relationship felt very strange. I don’t even really know how to put it. It wasn’t forced. It wasn’t instantaneous. It just felt real awkward to me. I didn’t know what to make of it. I didn’t find it to be believable. That doesn’t mean that the growth wasn’t a super amusing and occasionally awkward event. It was cute, but cringe-worthy. Odd but also endearing.

It was also super fast, with no real reason for whatever was happening at that moment in time, whether that be poison ivy, hurt feelings, people generally being rude or whatever. To be completely honest with you, I liked the minor characters more than I did the main characters. \

So back to the astronomical hopes. They fell flat. The book had so much potential (sound like a renovation show much?) and it just wasn’t what I was in the mood for. I wanted a bit more of a build. Instead, I got some rocky jumps from emotion to emotion with no real connection. While I enjoyed reading the book, it had it’s flaws.

Later gators,
Jackie

I couldn't get over the fact that the heroine of this tale was the guardian of four teenage girls, but was making out and having sex with the camp co-director. And again the author leaves too many loose ends and does BMW even make a passenger van for the U.S. market?

Like the other book I read by this author she ends with an epilogue wedding. YUCK!

The quintessential beach read with the standard cutsie summer romance turned serious. You have the cranky but hot camp director battling some mysterious personal demons while being forced to spend the summer with the cute school counselor trying to protect her charges. Things happen, sparks fly, girl gets nervous about how quickly she's falling, the kids get into more trouble... your standard comfy summer romance. Perfect for reading pool or beach side, eaaaasy read :)

Seiten: 368 (Print)
Verlag: Lübbe; Auflage: 1. Aufl. 2020 (28. Juli 2020)

Cover:

Gabi O'Brien has spent nearly her entire life at Briarwood Academy, an elite all-girls private school. She grew up there, went away to college, and then returned as a "housemother"-- living in a dorm with a group of girls who need Gabi 24/7. But when four of Gabi's girls get into major trouble, the only thing standing between them and expulsion is a four-week stay at Camp Echo. Camp Echo used to be a boy's camp for foster and needy kids, but was recently bought by Briarwood. Upon arrival, Gabi and her girls find only two employees left: its founder, the elderly Oliver, and its young handyman, Luke. The two are charged with a to-do list a mile long from Briarwood to get the camp in shape and have no interest in the plight of a group of snobby rich girls. Gabi, meanwhile, wasn't planning to spend her summer playing camp counselor and immediately finds herself in over her head, trying to care for her charges in the middle of the wilderness. Further, she realizes she's immediately attracted to Luke. The two are both fiercely independent individuals held back by their pasts. Can they get over these pasts and work together to save the four wayward girls, who desperately need them?

This novel contains the typical romance silliness with a somewhat crazy plot, but it's fun and enjoyable. It came at the perfect point in my reading schedule, where I needed a break from thrillers and intense fiction where all the characters hate each other. Some of it should be silly, but really Gabi and Luke (and the four girls) are endearing. There are certainly moments where Gabi's indecisiveness, fear, and bickering with Luke grow old; you find yourself needing her to just grow up a bit and control her own destiny a bit more. Still, the book is fun, even poking fun at romance novels with it's tongue-in-check rom/com allusions.

Luke and Gabi's building romance is enjoyable to watch, with added drama thrown in from their four teenage charges. As I said, Gabi can be a bit frustrating, but you can't help but feel for her plight (would you want to be trapped with four angry teens in the woods?), and Luke is rather charming. The novel does an excellent job of speaking to how the past can strongly influence one person's character, as well capturing the angst that comes with class differences (think Briarwood versus foster care). It gives the romance an added depth and surprising heart.

All in all, a fun, quick read. 3.5 stars.

Opened the first page of "She's Got A Way" .... the words flowed smoothly, scrolling and clicking to next screen page,... then guess what happened : I fell asleep with my Paperwhite Kindle in hand....
Yup a Maggie McGinnis book definitely hard to put down willingly. Again .

mmm What Do I Say .. next. I cannot stop visuals-events scrolling long after the last word was read from this great book. Pretty much everything in this book had an impact on me.
How do I put in words when the whole book keeps rerunning, replaying through my head. A wonderful story line packed with all kinds of emotion /real life situations. I smiled, laughed, giggled along, feared, teared up and bit my fingernails.. felt tired from work, pride from accomplishment and fell in love.

I loved the setting of Echo Lake Camp, mountains and wild life. ... Fate - circumstances brings a small Briarwood group from school of privilege to a run down camp where two great upstanding men in their community, trying to work through a reno-repair list produced from the School Board Directors of Briarwood Academy . ... and the events unfold/interactions happen: ... personalities, demands, and all kinds of interesting circumstances affecting them all. 4 teenagers, housemother, a handyman & his hidden aka and of course Oliver, the wise man behind the scene, having his influence as founder of the Echo Lake Camp: A camp that is strong with a steadfast purpose ! Of course let's not forget Piper - part-time camp cook. ... Which provides the time for others to stir the pot in the kitchen.. I enjoyed revisiting the small town of Echo Lake and wonderful people and businesses and Camp Echo Lake .. where the new and rekindled friendships along with the love that continues to grow this community.

I hope Maggie McGinnis will grace us with another book in Echo Lake series .

Thanks to author for sharing this book in exchange for an honest review. ... & " Honestly, I so very much enjoyed reading this book, She's Got A Way.'

This book can be read as a stand-alone.
If you have not read Book #1 and #2 in the Echo Lake series ... they are a must read too.

LOVE the cover of this book... Adirondack chairs ... sigh !

Luke & Gabriela waren mir zwar sympathisch,
Beide erschienen daher eher etwas blass dargestellt.

4 Sterne

I didn’t like the premise, but I really liked a couple of the previous books in this series, so I wanted to give this a shot. Unfortunately, I found most of it boring. Too much time spent on camp life and dealing with the girls and not enough time spent on the romance. The chemistry was also lacking between Gabi and Luke. Luke was too prickly and he comes across as sexist at times. When his past story is revealed, it wasn’t as impactful as I would have wanted. I liked Gabi in the beginning, but then she started being a scaredy cat and too much of a pushover. I do like the Luke is honest about his feelings and they do have some sweet moments, but the romance doesn’t even pick up until the 50% mark and it’s fade to black for the intimate scenes. The writing is good, so I went 3 stars. This story was just too tame. A nice story.

This review is based on an ARC provided by the author and/or the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest opinion.

This book was edited very well. I have unfortunately read or reviewed many that weren't. A big thank you to the author that made it happen. Another thing that I really liked about this book, was that I could barely tell that it was written as a series. It was written that well. As impressed as I am with the author, the book was a joy to read on its own merit. To sum up this review, loved the book and I love the author. In fact, she is being introduced to my favorites list as I write this.

I read one other book by this author (the previous book in the series) and I really liked it despite there being no smut. To my disappointment this had no smut. But it didn’t have much else either. There was no connection. No sexual tension. If anything this is a book about the girls and not a romance. Oh and Gabi is an idiot and Luke’s a dick.

Tripe. I was able to get past the FMc being a whiny, kind of ignorant type of person, and MMc being callous, cold, and discriminatory. But in the scene where the character Sam almost dies by drowning, I was 3/4 over the book. HOW did they think that that was HER fault??? Oh, sure, she should have mentioned that she couldn't swim. Excuse me?? How did that absolve the other girls' action of throwing her into the lake even after she was kicking and screaming, clearly terrified of being submerged into the water? The FMc even says it herself shortly after that all happens, that if Sam had told them about her history with not swimming, that the other girls would've made fun of her for it. And the MC's weren't even doing anything to stop the incident from happening! My review is mostly reflective of that particular scene but overall this book was trash. It was 2 stars only because of the character Oliver.

She’s Got A Way
An Echo Lake Novel #3
By Maggie McGinnis
ISBN 9781250069092

Brought to you by OBS Reviewer Jeanie

Synopsis:

Gabriela O’Brien is devoted to the girls at Briarwood Academy—even when their bad behavior earns them an entire summer at a remote campground in Echo Lake, Vermont. When the headmaster assigns Gabi to be their chaperone, how can she refuse? A long, hot summer with neither indoor plumbing nor wireless access might be just what she needs to get her own life in order…right?

Before Briarwood took over Camp Echo, Luke Magellan spent years there helping troubled boys. When four spoiled rich girls and their seemingly uptight den mother show up for the summer, it’s hard to hide his amusement as he watches them tackle the great outdoors. But it’s even tougher to resist the passion he sees in Gabi—especially when he learns about her past, and sees how much she cares about her students. Is this destined to be just a grownup version of a summer-camp romance—or can they find enough in common to build a love for all seasons? (from Goodreads)

Review:

Gabi pours her life into helping the girls she is ‘housemother’ to through their years at the high class boarding school, Briarwood Academy. She spent most of her elementary through high school years there, with few visits to – or from – her parents who had no idea what her needs were. She wants the girls to receive an excellent education and feel some of the love and attention they may not receive at home. She is determined, also, to make avenues for those young women whose families had no money to send them for a quality education, and was finally able to scholarship two at-risk teens into Briarwood.

It was a nightmare, then, to find out that those two teens, and two teens from ‘well-to-do’ families hotwired one of the facility’s vans and disappeared. After several of the worst hours of her life, Gabriela located the girls. When she learned she would be part of the girls’ punishment, the summer looked very long. Gabi would have to chaperone the four girls at a summer camp typically only for troubled boys but currently closed for renovations, and cancel her reservations for a week of sun and sand in Barbados. Then she met Luke, who she thought was the maintenance man, and it would seem that each had met their match. Luke, the aloof man with two adorable frou-frou pups and seriously special pecs.

It didn’t take long to find out that the only structures with walls and roofs were the admin building, where the older of the two men and former owner, Oliver, lived, and the cabin that Luke lived in. Gabi and the teens had to put up a tent plywood pads. Their only restroom was an outhouse, and they could bathe or wash their hair in the lake. It was not every teen’s dream summer vacation, nor was it on Gabi’s. What she could find for the girls to do during the next four weeks was beyond everything she learned on the job or at university.

Over the first couple weeks, Gabi learned that Briarwood had purchased the camp. She further learned that Luke and Oliver were concerned that Briarwood had other plans for it, as they had a long laundry list of things to be done, but not enough funds to begin to buy the materials and hire the crew to do the work. When Luke began to help plan projects for the girls to do, she couldn’t believe that a maintenance man could get them to do what they needed to with seemingly little effort. Nobody saw the tormented man who could never get away from the nightmares from his past, nightmares that imprisoned him from moving forward in the present.

I really like Gabi, Luke, Oliver and four girls. Sam and Eve were the girls who were used to moving from one place to another, with little or nothing to call their own, They were not the typical boarding school student or aficionados of fine designer couturier. That dubious upbringing was left for Madison and Waverly, whose parents actually had agreed to these summer days at camp. Each had their own wounds and coping mechanisms revealed over the course of the novel. Sam’s secrets shattered the veneer of the other teens, allowing a fragile cooperation between them. I was most attached to Gabi and Sam, and later to Laura, the board member that I could only dream of being like at her delightful age!

The beautiful lakeside cover art with two Adirondack chairs facing the sunrise draws the reader into a novel that pulls at one’s heart, refusing to let go. While I’m not typically a fan of “chick lit” romances, this author has a new fan. It is more than a simple romance, and Maggie McGinnis is more than a romance writer. There is definitely drama, and not in a teenage in-your-face kind of way – although there were a few instances of that. There was humor, and some scenes were almost sidesplitting funny. Positive relationships became nurtured in the daily closeness at the camp. Romance almost didn’t occur, and stopped too soon. The plot encompassed all this and more, making this author one to be avidly read both for this novel and those in the future.

If I could change anything, it would be some of the vocabulary that seems overused. I am very happy to see an author who doesn’t write steamy, passionate scenes. Most are tasteful, leaving much to the reader’s imagination, yet some moments were almost TMI. Neither would prevent me from reading another of Maggie McGinnis’ novels. I highly recommend ‘She’s Got a Way’ to those who are fans of women’s romance seasoned with taut drama and LOL humor.

This was the third book in the series but it is completely fine to read it as a standalone. I liked the premise but didn't really like the execution as much as I thought I would. The relationship between the characters just fell flat and only at about 60% did I actually find myself interested. I would say this is an okay read as long as you go in not expecting much from it.

What is it with obnoxious heroes right now, acting like jerks because they feel they have a good reason, who everybody thinks are wonderful even as they’re rude and arrogant and judgemental towards the book’s heroine? Luke is actually a pretty decent guy who is amazing with teenagers, but at the start of this book (and for most of it, let’s be honest) he has a massive chip on his shoulder that manifests as inverse snobbery, because the girls come from a boarding school, and everybody knows they never have issues or trouble or difficulties or any need for someone to help them get away from their own heads.

Gabi gets the worst of it, because she’s done nothing to warrant getting stuck in this camp for the summer, yet she not only has to look after her four very unhappy teens, she also has to deal with Luke being all smug and know-it-all. Then he has the audacity to complain that she’s too proud to ask for help. I don’t blame her! He makes it obvious from the start that he’s so much better at everything than she is (while hiding his qualifications), and he basically writes her off as some useless, trust-fund princess, so no wonder she doesn’t want to ask him for anything. She certainly doesn’t seem to struggle when it comes to working alongside and accepting help from the other people at the camp.

Which means Luke is the problem. Because he is.

And this is a huge shame, because I found it hard to get over this first impression of Luke, even when he was actually turning out to be someone decent and helpful towards the girls. He does good things, but while he sort of loosens up his judgemental attitude towards the girls, it definitely persists around Gabi, and it irritated me.

I also wish Gabi’s relationship with the girls had gone… well, anywhere. Luke makes all the connections and breakthroughs in this book, while Gabi flaps her hands, gets worried and seems completely unqualified to do her job. The teens don’t really change either. Waverley and Eve have little-to-no presence, Madison sort of relaxes her mean girl attitude, while Sam remains Sam right up to the end. They do learn teamwork, but I would have liked to have seen more of the changes and personality shifts.

Then there are the emotional issues. Gabi and Luke do talk in this book, but Gabi never tells Luke any of the details about her family situation – and I’m not sure if this is because she never loosens up enough to actually trust Luke, or if he just doesn’t bother to ask. Luke’s past is explored a little more, but again, never in great depth between them. Kind of like their relationship: it runs hot and cold, has a bit of antagonism and bumps along until it reaches the end.

Which is kind of this story in a nutshell for me. It’s okay, I found it readable, but it never quite drew me in as much as I’d hoped. It has plenty of things going on, it is interesting at times, there is a romance and certainly a happy (if a little too picture perfect) ending. In all, I found it okay, an easy read that helps to pass the time, but I didn’t manage to connect with it as deeply as I’d hoped.

I can always count on a Maggie McGinnis story to cheer me up. She’s Got a Way brings out all of the charming characteristics that she always incorporates into her stories. Not only that, but you can always count on finding a new book boyfriend when you read them.

I liked the summer camp setting in this story. It set up scenes for funny encounters and it gave a romantic comedy sort of feel. Poor Gabi, being stuck with 4 hormonal teenage girls who cause nothing but trouble, finds her dreams of going on an exotic vacation go up in smoke. Gabi wants a Rom-Com romance but doesn’t think she needs a knight in shining armor. Her main problem is asking for help and it was interesting to see how she would get over her pride.

So when the teasing, ever so hunky, Luke enters the scene, their “meet cute” could not be any cuter.

“Gabi, have you ever seen a bear?”
“No.”
“Have you ever seen a picture of a bear?”
“Of course.” She rolled her eyes.
“How about their teeth?”
“Um...”
He smiled, then turned back down the pathway.
“There’s no such thing as a bearproof tent.”

The whole tent thing endeared me to this story and it was funny to read the mishaps the girls had while pitching their tents. There’s a lot of bonding, lessons being learned, and personal growth for all to be had with this story. It was definitely cute and Gabi’s and Luke’s romance is a slow but steady one. Her need for family and stability and his personal demons are the main issues that are forefront to the plot.

A Little Note...

Somehow, I thought that this book didn’t fit in with the others in the series. There didn’t seem like a major tie between them besides being in the same town. It could have totally been a standalone release, so I was kind of missing that series feel.

Titel: Echo Lake - Liebe findet ihren Weg
Originaltitel: She's Got a Way
Autor: Maggie McGinnis
Seitenanzahl: 366
Teil: 3/3
Genre: Liebesroman

Gabriela O’Brien has the unenviable task of managing the pampered and spoiled girls at the private boarding school she works at but she holds out hope that things can get better. Except that their acting out has given them an all-access pass to a remote camp ground for the entire summer and instead of lounging by the pool at an island paradise enjoying the sun, Gabi has to chaperone the girls in the wild.

Luke Magellan can credit Camp Echo for putting him on the straight and narrow path when he was headed down the wrong path and he has dedicated his life to doing the same for the boys that pass through it, but the recent acquisition means that the camp that saved him and so many others like him may be converted to an upscale camp for girls, which does not make him very accommodating about being foisted with four spoiled princesses and their den mother for the summer.

I have enjoyed other books by Maggie McGinnis and actually loved the previous book in this series but for some reason, I struggled with this one. Gabriela was a very boring character to me, always whining, always hovering over the girls and complaining even more than the girls about everything. Her only redeeming feature was her unrelenting dedication to those girls.

Luke was an enjoyable character on his own, but the connection between him and Gabi was missing for me or maybe her constant complaining overshadowed it, but I really wasn't enthusiastic about their romance in any way.

I loved the location and can only imagine all the fun things to do in such a place. The upside for me was watching the girls go from pampered and bored mean girls sniping at each other to self-reliant, co-operative and friendly with each other and I think that the best parts of the book revolved around them.

I had so much excitement going into this book and while I didn't end up loving it, I enjoyed parts of it and I'll let readers decide for themselves what they feel about it.

Gabi is set for summer break and ready for a much two weeks off when all that changes in a blink of an eye, or shall I say a quick hotwire. Her four charges are plucked out of there so called"perfect" lives and with Gabi and they are put in the middle of no where to teach them a lesson. No ones sure what that will be or if they will find out. But Gabi sure of one thing she just kissed her dream vacation good bye and she will teach these girls what they need to know and not let them be victims of there environments. Luke is pissed he just got word the camp is closed for the summer so that he can renovate for group of "snobby rich" people who have nothing better to do with there lives then take from those who don't have. Then he gets word he is having five people join him for the summer and he sets is mind that he has no intention of helping this housemom or her charges they dug their holes not they can live with it. Will he be able to get his list done or will wildlife and four mischievous girls and their housemom get in the way of his plans? One things for sure this is a summer no one is going to forget.
I loved this book and I just love this series. I don't think I can get enough of Maddie McGinnis books. I have never read anything of hers until this year and when I get my hands on them it seems like I can't put them down. She does an amazing way of keep the attention of the reader and having fun quirky characters that have a heart for not always doing whats right but seeing it and trying to. She did the same in this book, she knocks it out with this one. I really enjoyed the banter back in forth between the two main characters and Gabi's four charges. In this book there is the hint of adult situations and some language but its very mild making this a good book for the right age. I also enjoyed the fact that the situation between Luke and Gabi was a casual build up not a forced or unrealistic situation. You really can not go wrong with this book or the others in this series.

Disclosure: I received this book free of charge from the publisher, but this review consists of my honest opinions, not influenced in any way by the author or publisher

I have never read anything from this author before but I thought the story sounded interesting and wanted to give her a try.

Gabriela O'Brien is a housemother at the wealthy girls boarding school, Briarwood Academy. When four of her girls get caught stealing a school van and taking it to another state to visit boys, the headmaster tells Gabi that these four girls, along with her are spending their four weeks of summer vacation at Camp Echo Lake. Gabi was planning on being on plane in a few days to go to Barbados and is not happy with her sudden change of plans.

Luke Magellan is camp counselor and handy man at Camp Echo Lake, a camp for teen boys who are having trouble in their lives. Luke has worked here for the owner, Oliver for 10 years and owes him a great deal. When Oliver has to sell the camp because of money issues, they find out that the camp has been bought by Briarwood Academy. Both of them are nervous that it is going to change into a camp for rich, spoiled girls.

When Gabi, Madison, Sam, Eve and Waverly arrive at Camp Echo Lake, they are shocked. How are they suppose to live in this type of environment! Luke has a fun timing playing up their fears! The things he has these girls doing was great! The way Luke handled the girls was awesome. I love how he was able to get them to do things.

It was fun watching Gabi and Luke slowly start to like each other. Each of them were hiding secrets from their pasts and when they were finally revealed it made a lot of sense. Both of these characters had hearts of gold that they didn't want others seeing. Once they both took their guards down, everything starting falling into place. I really liked the interaction with the teenage girls. Each of them were different but still alike in many ways. I really enjoyed the story this group went through. If you are looking for a sweet, funny romance, give this book a try. It was well written with very likeable characters.
