A design challenge. A magic eyePad disappears. Nancy Drew meets MacGyver in this mystery STEM adventure!

Twelve-year old aspiring artist/inventor Putney Hicks is panicked over her move to an experimental STEM school. Even magical mentor, Sam, can’t save Putney from her own klutziness. After all, you just can’t escape yourself... or arch-rival Sue Wexford.

“Anything you can do, I can buy better,” taunts Sue.

Those words haunt Putney. Can she use what she learns about rapid prototyping to come up with a clever solution to beat Sue’s high-tech entry in a design challenge?

When her magic eyePad goes missing at school, can she solve the mystery and save the day? Or will she end up eternally humiliated as Sue’s slave-for-a-day?

Magic and misadventure meet STEM – science, technology, engineering, math – in this fun series about friendship, middle school, and the engineering design process.

These books are great for kids who loved Rosie Revere, Engineer, The Secret Lake, and Nancy Drew, and are looking for more adventure and real-life projects. Check out www.putneydesigns.com for more project details and experiments!

★★★★★ Putney and the Magic eyePad by MK Tufft is a beautifully written story for fourth to sixth graders, featuring an interesting female Putney Hicks. She is an imaginative twelve-year-old girl with a magic eyePad, an aspiring artist who is worried sick over her move to an experimental STEM school. Apart from other worries, there is Sue Wexford, the girl who taunts her, and this time around, she might end up in a far worse situation with her. But can Sam, her magic mentor, be of any help?

There is a lot of fun in this book. The fact that the protagonist has to move to a new town is already a huge challenge for a youngster like Putney. This means she has to make new friends and start again all over, and there are things to get scared about with the unfamiliar terrain. MK Tufft does an incredible job of writing about science, curiosity, and self-discovery. Creating Sam, the friend and mentor who appears as a hologram, brings some magic into the story and expands the world of the protagonist. I loved the way they get to know each other.

There is something magical in this book and readers will enjoy that part of the story. But the part about product design is written in a fun way and packed with information and insight that will fuel the problem-solving skills of young readers and ignite their imaginations. Putney and the Magic eyePad is written in the first-person narrative and it is a humorous voice that reflects the thoughts and feelings of a young character. It is filled with fun activities, interesting characters, and lessons on solving problems. It is as realistic as it is magical.

My 8 year old daughter read this book and I am posting this review on her behalf. She really enjoyed it. She identified strongly with the main character and especially related to her experience of starting at a new school as my daughter has just been through this experience herself. She also liked the character of the "eyePad" who she said was bossy and cheeky. She finished the book very quickly, indicating that she enjoyed it and it was an easy, quick read for her. She also liked the technology aspect of including the "eyePad" as she is a huge fan of her tablet and uses it for homework/games/reading/watching TV etc...

A lovely and inspirational book
Talking from the perspective of a scientist and artist, I recognize Putney in some of my school pupils. I always encourage young teenage girls to embrace STE(A)M, however, the school resources and encouragement from parents are often lacking. I believe every pupil needs a magic eyePad that would help create a fusion of art and science. I will use some of the ideas from the book in my science lessons.

The Secret of the Magic eye pad: Putney Hicks book #1 by Marsha Tufft

This is a great series for kids ages 8-12. Think of it as a modern day Nancy Drew with inventive and art skills. There are mysteries, friendships, and inventions as Putney navigates a new school and a new place. 4/5 ⭐s
