It began as research. Just research. The technical approach. One that delivers the content necessary for a hidden culture to seem plausible, even if it’s not. Readers expect perfection from me. They need to be taken on a journey. That’s my job as a writer. Trouble is, I know nothing about my new subject matter - kink.

Blaine Jacobs is his name. He’s my research. A man who seems as logical and focused as me. A man who agrees to help. A man who, regardless of his stature in the community, seems to offer a sense of realism to this strange section of society.
And even if he does occasionally interrupt my data with dark brooding eyes and a questionably filthy mouth, what does it matter? It’s just research, isn’t it? It’s not real. None of this is. Nothing will come of it or change my mind.

So why am I confused?
I’m becoming lost.
Falling apart.

And Blaine Jacobs, no matter how calm he might have seemed at first, now appears to linger on the edges of sanity, pushing my boundaries with every whispered word.

Bloody Hell, What an experience that was, I have absolutely no idea where to start with this review, I have so much white noise running through my head at the mo, this page-turning addictive read has short-wired my ability to well, frankly articulate, I'm like a goldfish gasping unable to convey much at all.

description

All my concepts and thoughts are ping ponging around my brain as I try to analyse and dissect what I have just indulged in.
So I'm going to try to compartmentalise all my concepts and thoughts internally so I can analyse everything that is "Once Upon A".
I want to remember all my first impressions without forgetting anything as this is such a unique read with so many indefinite angles to the characters involved.
So First Things First, A Warning!!!
This a very dark read, dealing with some very disturbing stuff, if this is not your flavour, well you have been cautioned.
Myself, I happen to like fiction that stretches my boundaries, forcing me to contemplate instances outside my comfort zone, forcing that discomfited almost uneasy feeling.
This definitely Delivered in spades and them some.
So brief synopsis, Alana Williams is an author living with various pen-names One of these names she has decided is going to write the next BDSM/Kink bestseller all she needs is some research into the scene.
Enter Blaine Jacobs, Blaine of the humiliating set-downs and filthy mouth, All round degenerate of the highest order he doesn't play, annihilating his opponent is his kink.
So Alana is going to learn in a big way what it means to be Blaine's obsession and he is going to enjoy every Humiliation and lesson he bestows while making his little brat thank him prettily.
All in the name of research of course.
This Tale is probably gonna be marmite for people, me I abhor the rank stuff, I'm more of a peanut butter sort of gal, this story is so my peanut butter and I was nuts for the whole nine yards.
This book is so much more than the sum of its parts, I really think what this tale ultimately imparted to me, the main lesson I found myself taking away from this was acceptance.

He was right. It's full of honesty and trust, more so perhaps than the normal pronouncement of love. To give yourself to someone who wants to cause pain, needs to even, to offer them that with no recriminations and bathe in the glory of their honesty, too? That's a love unencumbered by restriction or temptation.

So That's all from me guys and gals, So Sorry for the vagueness but this is really something you need to go into blind and just behold.
Once Upon A (The Stained Duet #1) By Charlotte E Hart is so well written and such a fascinating read, managing to portray the decadence of such a lifestyle, while still managing to connect with the reader's heart, this is a rare talent that many authors fail to achieve, not so Miss Hart all her arrows shoot true and I thoroughly enjoyed each and every word, I will be waiting with baited breath for take two of Blaine and Alana.
Thank you to the author for providing me with an advanced readers copy, this is my own personal opinion.

Once Upon A (Stained Duet #1) by Charlotte E Hart

5 stars!!!!

Every now and then you find a new author to love and that’s what has happened to me! Once Upon A was a fantastic introduction to Charlotte as an author! My attention was captured from the very beginning of this book and it didn’t waiver even after finishing the book – I cannot wait to see what happens next!

For me there is always a part in a book where I think – oh yes this book just got good and it was when I read this part I got that feeling that I was about to read something amazing.

“You looked so beautiful,” he says, his body rising from the water as he walks forward. He just stops there and looks at me again, his body beginning to lean in until his fingers reach for my face. I can’t move, I’m fixated on his gaze, my mouth still chattering a little as I consider his words. Beautiful when? When I was drowning? And then he just leans in further, his lips coming down to mine slowly, the look of them more inviting than anything has ever been in my life. “Ask me, Alana.”

I really liked Alana and I found her to be a very fascinating character. Her thought processes and how she intended to research for her latest book intrigued me. I found myself asking is this how authors actually research what they are writing. The author wrote in such a way that I completely understood Alana and why she was doing what she was doing. Her depth of character and the development of Alana was fantastic!

Blaine Jacobs – oh this man! What an amazingly complex human being! He was arrogant, controlling and not always nice towards Alana at times but for some reason I just couldn’t stop myself for falling for him! He was hot and cold, he was sexy with an evil sadistic streak but still whenever he said ‘ask me Alana’ I could feel myself melting inside! Is it wrong that I kind of wanted him to ask me?? I loved how his character evolved over the story! It took me a while to work him out and things happened that I definitely didn’t expect but he was just something else entirely!

I don’t think it’s fair not to mention Alana’s best friend Bree – not only was she an amazing secondary character in this story but she provided me with some hilarious laugh out loud moments. I still chuckle at some of them when I think back. Their friendship was so fantastic and they just worked together. We also have Blaine’s friend Delaney (Priest) who was an important character for me in the story as it showed that Blaine was able to maintain some kind of relationship/friendship outside of his lifestyle.

I loved the ending to the story, for me it signalled a huge shift in the relationship between the two main characters and left me guessing as to what will happen next.
I think that the author has written an amazing book that has me now wanting to go and read her other books whilst I eagerly await the final book in this duet. I can’t wait for more Blaine. Thank you Charlotte for bringing him into my life!!

I really dont know how to describe how I feel about this book! I was totally lost for words and it's taken me a whole day after reading it to mull it over and digest it. I had to take the story apart bit by bit to analyze it and then slowly piece it back together so that I can make some kind of sense of the chaos and madness that it caused in my head. This is not just your average dark and dirty BDSM romance it's a total mind f*ck so you have been warned!

Alana Williams comes across as a self assured and independently strong woman who falls so easily under the influence of self acclaimed sadist Blaine Jacobs while researching the BDSM lifestyle for a book she is writing. I feel that Alana becomes so addicted to him and her new found "freedom" that she is willing to do anything just to get her fix of him.

"You just have to ask, Alana" "What for" He smiles, his long wide lips suddenly moving towards mine and filling our air with intimacy I cant avoid. "Whatever you want"

Blaine's character is a complex one, he's all hot and angry one minute and a complete gentleman the next. He's so very all consuming and just so utterly confusing, he's dark and dangerous but it's that danger that attracts Alana to him even though she know he's not good for her.

"I do know how it feels, Alana. I'll get rid of the bedlam for you if you ask. You've felt it already"

I was left reeling after finishing the book and I had so many questions I needed answered of where, how and why things happen the way they do. Charlotte E. Hart has written a story that is so twisted and physiologically mind bending that you just don't know if it's ethically wrong or right to love or hate her characters. I just can't comprehend where she will take her characters next in their pursuit of pleasure and pain.

This book is totally addictive reading! Once you meet Blaine Jacobs you will be captivated by his dark, moody personality and his life on the edge of insanity. I just couldn't give this book anything else but 5 Stars! It deserves it for taking me completely out of my comfort zone and for giving me a story that is not only angsty but very thought provoking.

I've read every word Charlotte has written. Some of them more than once and maybe even more than twice. They never get any less captivating.
Admittedly I was worried for Charlotte with this book.
Male involved in the scene who comes across as a right erm, handful... she's done that before.

Female who is particularly vanilla...yup, met her before.

Introduction to the scene and relations ensue...yup and yup.

I hoped to hell that i wasnt going to get THAT story again, despite the sound of things going that way.
Thankfully, I didn't.
Once Upon A is sinful, intense and one of those drag you in by the short and curlies type reads. It gets you thinking, gets you feeling, get you squirming in your seat.
Charlotte has developed two phenomenal love to hate characters in Blaine and Alana. Both flawed, both hurting, both wanting love but too stubborn to admit it.
The drama is up and down, the scenes swinging from intense to dramatic to explosive and back again.
Now to wait for book 2!

*Reviewed on behalf of 3 Girls Who Love Books*

So to start, a frank warning: this book will most certainly not be for everyone.

If you don't enjoy a book about BDSM this won't be for you, if you don't enjoy dark erotic romance this will not be for you - because imagine both together and then go to the darkest, most extreme ends of both and this book will be residing there!

This book is DARK, it is dirty, and it is psychologically twisted! This is not your average romance by any stretch of the imagination, and it will probably make you a bit uncomfortable at times and maybe make you squirm... I know it did for me! However, I totally don't mind the odd story like this to stir up the mix and take me out of my comfort zone.

I thought it was very well written - (perhaps at times a wee bit wordy) - but there were times I really disliked both of the main characters and yet still liked them and could understand - or maybe sympathize - all at once. This is not easy to do but the author succeeded.

Both of the main characters are complex people - in completely different ways - but I think you would have to be to go down the paths they explore in this story. The 'hero' is for sure an anti-hero and you might just love to hate him.

The only thing I really disliked was not being warned ahead of time that this was part of a two part book series! Although it now states it on the book listings that it IS a duet I was not told about this when I signed up to review. So unfortunately I now have to wait to get the rest of the story (*pouty face*) - and I really dislike cliffhangers... however I will say it was more of a HFN ending than a terrible cliffy.

Looking forward to getting the second book to see where this twisty tale takes us...

::..Reviewed for Red's Midnight Readers..::

I was very kindly provided with an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I have given it 5 stars but it deserves so much more!!

Finally!!! A story to feed the deviant inside me that is always wanting stories to be darker, dirtier and quite frankly Charlotte has pretty much hit the nail on the head with Once Upon A, I have been left begging for more and it's not fair.

This story was everything a great book should be and so much more. It was deliciously dark and twisted, gripping me from the very first word and captivating my attention until the very end. An absolute masterpiece of writing from a very talented author. She has created a highly erotic story that left me mesmerized and panting with desire.
She sets the scenes within the story so beautifully, making them easy to imagine as she took me on an intense roller coaster journey of self discovery and fierce passion.

Blaine is ruthless- He messed with my brain. He's an arse by his own admission and his actions should have been terrifying but actually were a total and utter turn on. He might just be the perfect book boyfriend. He's intelligent and calculating, knowing exactly what Alana needs even before she knows herself. Alana is lost, driven by deadlines and the need to find the next thing to fill that void but she doesn't count on that need being fulfilled by a sadistic dominant!

This is an addictive must read that everyone should one click!

ARC RECEIVED FOR HONEST REVIEW
Charlotte E Hart writes Alpha Males that are drop dead gorgeous and deeply flawed. She takes you into their world of depravity and sin, and no one does it better! Blaine Jacobs was a Professor of Psychology, who due to circumstances with a student, relinquishes his position to teach Dominants proper technique. Alana Williams is a writer, who has three pen names. She is on overload with deadlines and marketing, and a creeper of a Publisher. Alana wants to write a book on BDSM, and is referred to Master Blaine. Instant sparks happen as Alana tries to come to terms as to why a modern woman would submit to kneeling, shackles, and whips, while trying to rationally fight her white-hot attraction to Blaine. With Blaine, she finds herself pulled into the dark, dirty, sexually charged world while discovering many things about herself.
Blaine is fighting his own demons. He hasn’t been with a woman since Eloise. He is a sadist who has his needs with all things depraved and tries to dismiss Alana, but he can’t deny how she makes him come alive and want to revel in the darkness again.
What started as research is now life altering.
This is not for the faint of heart! Charlotte’s stories are enthralling and intense – she gets you inside their heads so you know exactly how their thought processes are, and believe me – they are full of debauchery and sin. I love every word! Bring on Blaine#2!

WOW what a read I am sad that I have finished this book. Charlotte has knocked it out of the park with this one. This is not your typical boy meets girl fairytale, it is dark, dirty & debauched & I loved it.

Alana is an author who has decided to write a bdsm book, after meeting with a Dom he sends her to meet a Dom called Blain Jacobs. Who she is informed can help her to understand the sadistic side of bdsm.

Blaine teaches new doms & subs though he himself has not had sex since his sub died, you will read more about that in the book. Alana meets him & though she is physically attracted to him, she thinks he is a sadist.

Though she agrees to see him for research purposes. One part of the book were things start to turn is when Blaine throws her in the pool & after dragging her out he tells her 'she looked beautiful' as she was struggling under the water. From this you know that Blaine is not going to be like any other Dom he is sick, twisted & depraved, and I certainly wanted to find out more about him ( don't know what that says about me lol).

Alana is in love can Blaine love her back? Blaine decides to do something so Alana knows what he is like before she decides to be with him. I would love to tell you more but I do not wish to give anything away this is a must read.

Amazing read, one exceeding dark & depraved fairytale, eagerly awaiting book 2.

This story is dark and twisted and will blow your mind! It’s not going to be for every reader that’s for certain but if you enjoy testing the limits of your comfort zone, then this book should be perfect for you.

I absolutely love the push and pull between Alana and Blaine. I loved witnessing their journeys. I love how complex Blaine is, and I loved seeing Alana discovering her true self. The couple’s chemistry is palpable and the sexual tension…… wow!!

I love that the story is written using dual POVs, it allowed me to gain a greater understanding to the thoughts and feelings of both characters. My only niggle is that during some parts of the book I would have preferred the pace of the story to be quicker. It took a little time for the book to fully grab my attention but once it did, that was it for me.

One thing I am learning quickly about this author is that she creates the most incredible alpha men. If you like your men intense with a darker side to their personalities then Ms. Hart has you spoiled for choice. Blaine and Alana are perfect for each other and I am so pleased I can dive straight into the second book in this duet, and see what happens next!

Once upon a….. by Charlotte E Hart
This is book 1 in a duet
Oh Charlotte you floored me again with your words. I’m not sure what it is I just connect with your writing and its amazing!! I wont lie when I first knew about this book I was worried.. would it live up to expectations after previous works? Well I’m pleased to say that it did and I loved every word you have written in these pages!!!
The descriptive writing is as awesome as ever and not a stone goes by without us knowing about it! As usual with Charlottes books they leave you a little hot under the collar so either have B.O.B or your fella ready for afterwards as the sex scenes are hot as hell (fans self) haha!!
The characters are fantastic and we get a good history of them throughout the story which is always good!
This book follows a ‘newbie’ into the world of BDSM and it is very accurate and insightful! Im saying no more than that because you need to read it!
Charlotte you are incredible and I love your amazing words! I cant wait for book 2!!!

This was my first book to read of Charlotte E Harts and WOW! This book is super interesting and very unique. I love how Charlotte describes each scene and character and get into her mind. I thought it would be confusing with the main character being a author and having different pen names. But I wasn't confused at all, I was deeply intrigued on the way the story unfolded and I loved her best friend. Alana lives a busy life a author and doesn't have time to stop and smell the roses. Until Blaine Jacobs, a exhilarating subject of her research. With the temptation of Blaine and the nudging of a friend, Alana jumps all in for the research and getting feelings for Blaine. This story is hot and astounding and will have you squirming in your seat!

*Spoiler FREE*

I went into this somewhat blindly and didnt know what I would be in for. I will say that this is definitely not for the faint of heart.

I found this to be quite a dark book and for me the element of BDSM was slight with a heavier focus on the S&M side of things. I'm not complaining at all! For the sexual side of things some of the sadism content was a bit on the extreme side for my taste, I wouldnt be trying them at home thats for sure! While thats the case I think it built on Blaine as a character and his struggle to find peace and fit in because of his own tastes.

I enjoyed the unusual dynamics of the "relationship" between Alana and Blaine, I particularly liked that throughout the book while we get some insight into Blaine there was still an element of mystery about him. Alana was an interesting character I liked that even though she wasnt a part of Blaine's world she still donned her own multiple personas so it gave her a sort of "bond" with Blaine and the others that she wouldnt have had otherwise.

Ill be completely honest, crazy sadism aside the arsehole-ness of Blaine was quite appealing. Also for some unknown reason I was digging Delaney as a character and definitely want to know more about him!

Really looking forward to seeing what book 2 has in store!

This was my first book by this author and I loved it! Incredible storyline that is very well written and developed, flows seamlessly, and kept me hooked from beginning to end. Master Blaine and Alana are amazing characters that come together for research but together they are explosive, incredibly hot, and intense! It's a wonderfully twisted book that leaves me wanting so much more and anxiously awaiting the next one!

Charlotte Hart's writing reminds me of the late Pat Conroy. Her words set a scene that allows you to imagine exactly what is happening, the emotions, of fear, anxiety, anger, pain and love. I took my time reading this book because I didn't want to miss any of it. Alana is an author needing to research kink, Blaine is a master who will push her boundaries in both kink and love. This book is a roller coaster ride and you need to hang onto your panties, Blaine will for sure melt them. I post no spoilers, sorry. You will have to read the book and see for your self. I am patiently impatiently waiting for the next book, the ending left me panting. 😝😝

Having read and truly loved every book written by this author and I was beyond excited to start this new book and meet the new characters this book is wonderful it sucked me completely into the story written in a way that makes you feel you are there in the book at times I actually held my own breath and had tears in eyes. I hate spoilers in reviews so will not tell you what happens in this book all I will say is if you haven't started this book yet then you need too. Just finished this and I, like Alana, am without words. Dirty. Dark. Decadent. Full of debauchery. Blaine's intensity had me stopping several times just so I could processs what I had just read. I felt as if I was there. I felt what Alana felt and I fell for Blaine and his bloodstained sadistic ways. My thoughts are an absolute jumbled mess. I honestly don't know what else to say, and that is definitely a good thing! Thanks to Charlotte for the opportunity to read this ARC and be one of the first to experience Blaine, now where is part 2? Please don't make me wait to long!

Strong, dark and torrid. I devoured this book, and revelled in the irresistable chemistry between Blaine and Alana. Contrary to my initial reading of his character, I think that it could be Blaine - rather than Alana - who needs this romance to grow, but no doubt we will learn more in the book two. For now, it's a fabulous five stars from me. Bravo, Ms. Hart!

I honestly haven't read a book that I have connected with so much in a very long time. Something that instantly turned me off because of my obvious ignorance of it has proved that yes, although it's not for me I now have a greater and empathetic understanding and respect of.

Blaine - I have many emotions of this man but I think I have fallen in love with him and want to know his back story
Alana - I want to see how this affects her

In other words I can't wait to read book 2

Not for the faint hearted

Sweet holy hell. This book is hotter than Satan's Mistress. I knew this book was going to be dark. I had no idea it was going to be this DARK. I learned a couple of things reading this; I love dark, I loved this book, and I need therapy (apparently) either that, or all the nuns were right about me being a deviant. There is a high probability of that being true. No wonder I rebelled at Catholic school and am no longer Catholic .

Alana was a fireball. Struggling with identity and living up to societal expectations.Blaine, holy hell is he a dark soul but hotter than Hades. It was interesting getting into his mind. The story intrigued me. Normally, the extreme aspects of BDSM frighten me but it was interesting to read about and get some insight into why others might personally like pain or pain to that extent. I found myself wanting to know more about Priest and Tabitha.

Looking forward to more from this author. My only complaint was the LONG paragraphs. I put that aside though because she has a great style in her writing and I loved deconstructing some of her thoughts (the little things that make me happy for a degree in Literature). Can't wait to read the next book. I need to restock my wine first though.

I loved this latest offering from the brilliantly dark Charlotte E. Hart. Her books never fail to entertain while dragging you down into the very depths of the human condition. I love the battles her characters go through between light and dark. These are truly deep people, given whole lives off the page that the reader can only guess at, making them seem more alive and real within the story Charlotte gives them.

This was my favourite of her books so far. (Shh, don't tell Mr. VDB. Actually... maybe do! 😈) I loved the push and pull of the relationship, the slow movement towards that elusive thing everybody secretly wants--the chance to be truly yourself with somebody who "gets" you.

Blaine Jacobs made me weak at the knees throughout the story, and I adored Alana. She was a fantastic heroine, feisty and stubborn, just the way I like them. She certainly gave Blaine a run for his money. I can't wait to see what happens to these characters next!

Tina's Book Review - 5 Stars for Once Upon A

Having just finished this book, I'm ready to dive into book two of the series to see just how deviant Blaine's type of love is.

Alana is a writer in search of knowledge for her next book so she immerses herself into the lifestyle of a sadistic man. Along the way, she begins to find herself as she's fallen in love.

Dual POV's, the internal struggle of both of them keep you turning the pages. And when you think it cannot get any darker, Charlotte's writing pulls you under the water even more.

The complexity behind Blaine's character was so deep and intriguing and darkly sexy. I loved how dark his mind operated, and he was really what Alana needed, even if she didn't realize it. Alana is caught up in the technicalities of the kinky BDSM world, that is, until Blaine opens up her eyes, and her mind, to her deep-seated desires. I loved how the hustle and bustle of the first part of the book contrasted with the slower, more deliberate scenes with Blaine. It made me really sit up and pay more attention. I was riveted from the first chapter, but this book kept me reading until the last page. I am so ready for more of our darkly twisted Blaine! I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
