He’s on the hunt for a fresh start. She’s trapped in a nightmare she can’t escape. Can love help them make a break for freedom?
Michael: The money was supposed to save me...until it got me shot. You don’t steal from Marlo Sloan. But it led me to her.
Annie’s kind. She’s fierce. She’s making me want to be the man my grandpa believed I could be. A Barrett - strong, dependable. A hero.
Danger is coming. It’s inevitable. I should split before it catches up with me. But how can I leave Annie and her little brother with their psycho father?
I want to steal her away from this nightmare. Take her to the ranch where I know she’d be safe. But I’m a runaway thief, and the ranch is no doubt a desolate wreck. She deserves better than that. I have to tell her the truth. Which means she’ll never look at me the same again. I could lose her over this, when all I want to do is keep her safe.
Grandpa always said, “Barrett boys do the right thing. They don’t cut and run. They stand. They fight to protect the ones they love.” I was raised to be a Barrett boy. It’s time I start acting like one.

He’s on the hunt for a fresh start. She’s trapped in a nightmare she can’t escape. The nightmare being physical abuse, you've been warned.
Michael's life hasn't been easy since he was kid and he has had to resort to less than legal or honest means to survive. Working for a criminal for nearly 2 years while feeling awful about it, something finally happens that triggers his need to break from that life. And he does what's allowed him to survive on the streets: steals and runs.
He meets Annie, a fierce kind girl, literally slaving her days away as a waitress thanks to her abusive step-father. Her life isn't that great either. Save for her little brother Jackson and a few close friends, she's treated like trash by the whole town. She's trapped and she longs to escape with Jackson far away to safety.
Michael wants to help them, just like Annie helped him. He wants to be the man his grandfather saw in him. But danger is coming. Will they make their way to freedom?
Written in 1st person, present tense. Dual pov: Michael and Annie
So right at the start of June, I did a quiz to find out which Jordan Ford's series fit my tastes best (or another of her noms de plume). The answer was, and I quote, "You are a Heart Racing Romantic, and you should start with the Brotherhood trilogy or the Barrett Boys novels."
I internally grinned, for I had picked The Runaway for the challenge, and thought I'd sure find out if it was right pretty soon. Well, guess what? It was!!
This was a fast paced read I would have finished right away, if I hadn't been reading and doing other life things simultaneously! In less than 2 days I read 93% of the book like that *snaps fingers* It does make sense that romantic suspense is for me, for the thrill and the emotions - if a writer can make me worry and anxious, they're doing it right.
I felt emotional, I was charmed by these characters, I yearned for their justice & second chances, I smiled at adorable Jackson. I even teared up a little right before the epilogue.
Michael and Annie have more than just physical attraction. The fact they have such a big common ground when it comes to their life experiences, makes them have this keen understanding, a connection bigger than words. I'm not going to say reading about physical abuse was easy. It never is. But those who lived it know what it is like for one's home to be a minefield and the surrealism of living with someone who gives you fear & anxiety, and has casual moments with you, like nothing's wrong.

Michael Barrett had a family and then in a heartbeat, it was ripped away from him, years later he tried to pickpocket a woman and it turned out to be someone dangerous - the sister of a Mob Boss. Michael changed his surname to Adams and became his right-hand man. Now years later, Michael has had enough of the danger, the killing, and never knowing whether this will be his last day on earth. On a planned whim, he decides today is the day to leave and runs off with a bag of his boss's money. During the escape, he is shot but finds himself in a small diner in the middle of nowhere. At the Diner, he meets Annie - the diner was her grandfather's and then her mothers and now with both of them gone - it went to her evil stepfather. He treats Annie like Cinderella and she has been planning to save up and escape with her younger half-brother Jackson when she meets Michael. There is something about him, that draws her to him and soon the pair strike a friendship and in a way, they will both become each other's, guardian angels. With both of them wanting freedom and a new life, can they help each other to achieve their dreams before danger catches up with the pair of them which could see their dreams destroyed before they have even had a chance to begin? Find out in Book #1 of the Barrett Boys by Jordan Ford. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series as I would love for Michael and all his brothers to be reunited again after all these years separated.
I have to be honest and say that it was the cover that lured me in and after reading the blurb and doing a bit research on the author, since she is a new to me author, and stumbling upon the novella, I Dare You, and enjoying it, I decided to give this baby a go. And while this book didn’t fully hook me at the beginning and took me a bit to get into, but in the end, I can honestly say that I enjoyed it and am looking forward to seeing where this series takes us.
I loved Annie. She is vibrant, sassy and determined. She’s been through more than anyone her age should, and though life hasn’t been kind, she still has hope and the belief that she can make her life better for herself and her brother. Michael has had it rough, whether by outside forces, or his own choices and it’s hardened him on the outside, but on the inside he’s a jumble of emotions and when the walls he’s had to erect around him, they come out to play.
Their journey was a weird blend of insta and slow burn, which I didn’t hate because it meant that they had time to become friends, but it did drag for me at times. With that said, I really liked how they collided ~ definitely not your typical meet cute ~ and just how they found that the pull they had towards each other was more than they expected.
Even though it took me a bit to get into this book, I can’t say that I didn’t enjoy it in the end. There is a lot going on, not only with the characters, but getting things set up for the rest of the series, which I am totally here for. As for the secondary cast of characters, I loved Franks, Billy and Jackson. They were the light in a book that it is pretty grey. And as for that epilogue, what a way to have me making grabby hands at the next book!

I loved this book. I mean, ok, there was insta love. And yes, the characters made some stupid decisions. Not to mention that this was super stereotypical. Regardless of all of that, this book hooked you right off the bat. I was up way later than I meant to be, because I got dragged into the "one more chapter" cycle. What a lie...
Anyway! This book follows Annie, a waiter in a small town with an abusive stepfather, who is just waiting to make enough to free her from the town. On the other hand, we have Michael, who got involved in bad business, grabbed a bag of money and ran. He ends up in Annie's diner, and this is the tale of their love
Sound like every other romance book? Probably because it was pretty darn similar. This was just innovative enough to keep me hooked though. Ford definitely has perfected the art of making her writing addictive, because as soon as I finished it, I was wanting the next one. The plot, although character driven, was pretty steady the entire time, and no big twists derailed it. That was fine though, I kind of liked the predictability.
Ok, so the main thing that drove this book was the romance. I loved Michael and Annie together, but I do wish that their relationship had been developed a bit more at the beginning. As soon as Michael and Annie met, it was love. That made the beginning kind of harder for me to get in to, but I forgot that problem pretty fast.
As a result of their insta love, some of Annie’s decisions were a bit illogical. Just after meeting a random guy, who has been shot, she invites him into her house. It was necessary for the story, and it added a lot of tension, it was just a bit illogical.
I actually really liked the ending of this. It was what I was expecting in some ways, but I love how it sets up for the next book. In some ways, I'm kind of disappointed to get this as an arc, because now I just have that much longer to wait for the next book. After all that, I definitely recommend this for romance fans!

I'm torn about this book. I liked Annie and Michael's relationship, they understand each other since they've both been through abusive parents and loss. They want to escape their lives and find somewhere to live peacefully with their brothers. I was rooting for them to get together and get out, run away from their pursuers. On the other hand, it was difficult watching Annie be beaten and mistreated and some things weren't explained well.
Michael lost his mother and grandfather and is separated from his four brothers. He's now on the run from a drug dealer whose money and car he stole. He lucks out when he finds Annie at a small town diner and she helps him get patched up and gives him a place to stay. Annie lost her mom, is abused by her stepfather, and is trying to get her ten year old brother out of town. Between the two characters, they have a ton of baggage. It was actually a bit too much for me and I would have liked more happy scenes.
We didn't ever find out why Michael was separated from his oldest brother Cooper or how Annie was allowed to just take her brother. The events surrounding Michael's grandfather's death are a bit unclear as well. I think some of these things will be explained in the following Barrett books, I just wanted more clarification now.
This is a quick read with plenty of drama and fighting. Be prepared for a dark book, but there is a happy ever after (for now) at the end.

This book had me intrigued and knowing there's another book to come, I cannot wait. The struggle these two go through and need to escape, run away, like the name, the characters were amazing and the plot line was so perfect and the ending keeps you hanging, cannot wait for the next book.
My first read by this author and I really enjoyed it.

I was really excited to start this new series by Jordan Ford. I've read most of her books so far and enjoyed them. The Runaway is the first book in her new Barrett Boys series. This first book features Michael and Annie as the main characters. While this book didn't grab my attention as much as I would've liked, I really liked how it set up the series and the hint of what's coming next and I am excited to see where the series goes.
Annie lives in a small town. She works as a waitress instead of finishing school because of her abusive stepfather. Since her mom died she doesn't have many people left who care about her, only her little brother Jackson and her bets friend Franks. Her stepfather hits her and forces her to work in the diner while not getting any of the money she makes. She secretly saves some money and hopes to save enough to leave town one day with Jackson. Then one day Michael lands in town, he stole money from a bad guy and only barely escaped with his life. When he passes out in the diner where Annie works, she decided to take care of him and Michael recovers in this town. Slowly the two grow closer.
This book was hard for me to get into, the opening chapters didn't hook me and it took a few chapters before the main characters even met. Then there was a bit of an unrealistic plot point where Annie decides to help Michael and not call a hospital even tough he's been shot. I felt like the book didn't quite fit my reading mood. It was quite bleak at times. Everyone in the whole town seems to be mean to Annie, except for her best friend and her brother Jackson. She gets treated badly and even if she talks back she just lands into more trouble. It just felt like the same type of scenes replayed over and over. The only bit of light was Annie's growing connection with Michael. And some scenes with her brother Jackson and her best friend Franks. Something about the book just didn't grip my attention, I kept waiting for something to happen or for me to feel the romance. Unfortunately I had to wait till the last 20% for that to happen.
The last 20% of the book were great. There was a lot happening in quick succession, some suspense going on and many of the ongoing plot lines got resolved. I really liked the final few chapters and I liked the set up it paints for the rest of the series. I am hoping to see how the Barret Boys get together again. We only see Michael here and it's sad he and his other 4 brothers got separated. I look forward to getting their stories. I also liked seeing Michael and Annie work together there at the end, they really felt like a couple to me by then.
I struggled a bit with the romance. The mutual attraction is obvious from the start and there are enough mentions of how hot/ cute etc they find the other, but I didn't fully feel their relationship at first. The reason Annie wanted to help him felt a bit unrealistic and then a few of their earlier conversations get skipped over. It also takes a while before their romance really develops and so we don't see as much of them as a couple.
I liked seeing them get to know each other and there are some great scenes they spend together later in the book. It also was fun to see how Michael grows closer to Jackson. There are some fun scenes they spend all together. And then the part at the end did change my opinion and I really liked them as a couple. There is a bit of drama when Annie jumps to conclusions that bothered me a bit, especially when up till that point she always trusted Michael even without evidence to support that. I felt a bit out of character that she didn't now, but I was happy when it got resolved and they both realized they hadn't handled that well.
I was a bit this book doesn't take place as the novella I Dare You, the prequel for this series. I had expected to return to that small cozy town, instead we get a small town that doesn't has that cozy feel. Annie gets mistreated by the whole community and it doesn't feel like her home. I missed that setting I had glimpsed in I Dare You. Hopefully we'll see more of it in the next book.
To summarize: unfortunately this book didn't quite work for me, but I liked the last part of this book and the hints we get of where the series goes next. I look forward to reading the later books in this series. This story felt a bit bleak at times with everyone in town treating Annie badly, except for her brother Jackson and her best friend. The plot and romance didn't grab my attention until the last part of the book where the plot lines start gettign resolved and the suspense/ danger plot line plays out. I did really like the final few chapters and the hint of what's coming next. I found it hard to really feel the romance at first, their mutual attraction is obvious, but I struggled a bit to really feel their romance. By the end I liked them as a couple and could see how much they cared for the other. I was a bit sad this book doesn't take place in the small town we got to know in the prequel novella I Dare You, as the town this one plays in didn't feel cozy and home-y.

I really enjoyed this book! I thought the writing style was great and I felt like the words flowed nicely. I like that the story was told through the multiple perspectives of the main characters, Annie and Michael. Annie is a strong character with a troubled home life and a mouth that gets her into trouble more often than not. Her world is changed the night Michael shows up at the diner she works at when he's passing through town. He passes out at closing time from the loss of blood from a bullet wound and Annie helps him get patched up and gives him a place to recover. There are many secrets uncovered throughout the course of the book, and the relationship that blossoms between Annie and Michael is great. I can't wait to read the next book in the series!
The hardest thing about starting a new series is getting all the characters straight in my head then wondering who I'm going to love to hate. Well that part wasn't hard at all and I was hoping for karma. First Barrett boy up is Michael, he's had a hard life and fallen into the wrong crowd. Circumstances have him landing in a small town where he meets Annie. They understand each other, their connection being fear in their homes. Their romance was sweet, both were young and deserving of better lives. Many secrets to uncover in this story as we progress, and the author strips back the layers. A burst of action, who is going to survive this mess? Ms Ford's writing style will have you reading 'just one more chapter' until it's over. Your heart is beating fast and you can't believe it's done. I want book 2 immediately. It does not end on a cliff hanger, just a tease of what's to come.
This was an interesting read and an intriguing start to this series. Michael and Annie, I felt truly made this book. They are complex and complicated characters that inspire strong emotions in the reader and have you wishing and hoping for better things for them. The book and storyline have a lot going on. Besides the romance brewing between the main characters, there is also major baggage and drama to be dealt with from each of their individual histories and lots of groundwork too be laid for the series. I personally struggled a bit to get into this book at first but once things hit their stride my focus was kept and I was very engaged with it all. So all together a very good read that I found enjoyable and left me looking forward to book two. I'm posting my unprejudiced review of my own accord.
So the first thing you need to know is that Miss Ford knows how to take you from gasping to laughing to crying to heart-soaring in the span of a page. This new series is absolutely no exception. I loved the backstory we got of the Barrett Boys in the novella "I Dare You." I knew these boys were going to be something special. With a grandpa like Ray how could they not. Well this story starts off with a bang and keeps you at the edge the whole ride. Michael and Annie and Jackson are amazing characters mingling through a slew of dubious and criminal characters. If you're looking for action, love, danger, and hope, pick this book up. If you're not looking for those things, still pick this book up.
This was my first book from this author and it won't be the last. I liked her writing style. I really enjoyed this book and it was easy to like both main characters. They didn't have easy life but they did their best. Also I liked Annie's friend Franks. I'm glad that Annie had her and her mom in her life. Michael didn't plan to stay Annie's town but plans often change. I liked how Annie wanted to help Michael when others were againts of it. I liked how Michael and Annie were together because they were so good for each other. Can't wait to read next book.
An ARC was provided in exhange for an honest review.
Wow, what a fabulous, powerful, well written story this is, its full of action and caught my interest from the beginning, the story line kept me intrigued and I wanted to know what would happen next. I couldn't put the book down. I was "Just one more chapter" till the end. This author knows how to pull you in and keep you hooked. I don't think my heart went back to its normal beat until the end of the novel. . I can't wait for the next. Thanks so much for the escape. I was privileged enough to receive an advanced reader copy of this book from the author for a voluntary and honest review.
I didn't think I was going to like this book at first, but it really surprised me. It surprised me to the point of where I can't wait to find out what happens next. When will the other brothers finally come home?
It was a rough start because I really didn't know what I was getting into but then this story started to develop into something more. I started to root for the characters to bring some light into their dark worlds. Michael and Annie have been through a lot but together they can help each other get through everything and onto the right path.
I have always enjoyed books that let you experience a story through two points of views. I really enjoyed hearing what they were both going through and feeling separately and together. You could feel the need for one another grow. It wasn't an instant love but it was an instant connection. There were a lot of things they were going through such as abuse, secrets, running from bad people, and most importantly their situations about their families. My heart felt for Annie and the people around her, the acceptance I wish she had.
I really can't wait to hear more about the Barrett boys. We got snippets through Michael but I feel like there is so much more to be explored. But with Michael you saw how he somehow got mixed in with the wrong crowd but he knew better and eventually got out of it. Maybe not the smartest way but he took that chance.
Annie on the other hand was dealing with a lot of family and abuse, whether it was from her stepfather or the town itself. It was hard for her but she truly was a strong person who did everything she could to save up and get out of dodge all while trying to keep her brother safe.
It was interesting reading through their struggles and even though there was a light at the end of the tunnel it was how they got there that will stay with them forever. I almost felt like I was watching a movie in my mind reading through this and it was quite the adventure.
This was a great read and start to a series that will keep me intrigued.
Michael is on the run, again. He hasn't been the man his grandfather expected him to be over the last few years. But if he can get away this time, he has a chance. He can return to the only place he was ever happy; if he can face the ghosts of his past. And stay alive. Driving through a small town glancing at a diner, he sees a pretty waitress with a smile full of sunshine. Needing rest and food Michael decides this is a good place to stop. Little does he know that this stop will be the first step to living up to his grandfather's words. Barrett men live justly.
I really enjoyed this first Barrett Boys book. Annie was great, smart, sassy, protective, and loving. Despite being the town pariah, she held her head high and did her best to make her brother Jackson's life good. For anyone who believes the treatment Annie received at the hands of the "good" townspeople, think again. Pick any small town in the south and you can find an Annie. Truth falls to save reputations every day. Maybe it hits too close to home but the last-minute attempt for forgiveness was not enough for me. However, it didn't matter by then. The town, every side character served their purpose, nothing more. This book worked because of Michael. It could have been so easy to dismiss him as a low-level thug but he was so much more. He made bad choices, some due to his youth, some due to desperate circumstances but he wanted to be better. He realized he could be better. He took steps to be better. He stopped taking the easy way and chose the just way. Annie and Jackson gave him the final push to become the Michael we all knew was there all along. The three of them together made a family you couldn't help but love. The ranch will be the perfect backdrop to the next part of their lives. It felt right, like home immediately. We now know its secrets but it can't be defined by tragedy. Sunshine has returned. It will be a place of light and laughter, hard work and love again. First thing...we need to help Deeks!
When Michael took that money from his boss he knew the man would be out for his blood. Annie is used to being treated badly by everyone but her younger brother. So when the gorgeous young man who came into the diner collapses on his way out, she decides on impulse to do everything in her power to help him. Her best friend thinks she's crazy, but he is the first person in so long to treat her well, that she just can't help herself. Michael realizes that it isn't a good idea to to stick around the small town, and take a job in the diner, but there is something about Annie that draws him. He needs to tell her the truth about himself, what he's done, and to hopefully leave this town with her younger brother and move to Montana with him. Unfortunately, for Michael and Annie, the inevitable happens, his former boss has found him, and he will kill anyone who stands between Michael, and his need to exact his own brand of justice. Wow, absolutely wonderful characters. Well written, and compelling. Michael and Annie have both suffered abuse from people in their lives that should have loved and supported them, but find in each other the love and support they need. There is action, suspense, and some violence with some unexpected, surprising twists that kept me glued to the pages of this book. I realize that every family isn't a happy one and that, unfortunately, and since abuse does occur. I thought the characters, their reactions, and the overall plot was very realistic. I thought this was a fantastic book, I look forward to the next book in this series.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
I absolutely adored this story!!! It was a fantastic read that pulled me in from beginning to end! Michael has not had an easy life. He has seen better when he was with his brothers and his Grandfather but something happened and it was torn away and he has been scraping by since. He can't do the life of crime that he has fallen into anymore. He decides to run to get out and try and find something different. He ends up injured on his run out and knows they will be coming after him. Annie ends up helping him out. Her life is miserable as well. She has a horrible stepfather and is trying to save up enough money to take her younger brother and run. The small town treats her like crap and Michael can't understand why. She is nice and caring with a fiery tongue. I loved watching these two interact and let down their walls. It isn't easy for either one of them as life has taught them that letting people in hurts and it leaves you vulnerable. Michael has some changing to do to redeem himself into the man that his grandpa would be proud of. This story grabbed my heartstrings pretty much instantaneously with both Annie and Michael. They are both stuck in crappy situations and wanting to get out and do better. I loved the build that happens between Michael and Annie and I can't wait to get the next book in the story and see what is going on with his brothers and how they are all going to make it back to Montana to the Barrett Ranch. I'm really excited for this series! I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
Suspenseful and intense with some romance! HEA (kinda) with a bit of a cliffhanger though. Honestly I felt that this book dragged a little towards the middle but once the ending hit this story picked up and one thing after another happened. I was totally crying towards the end/at the end. I really liked Annie and was not happy with her living situation. Living in a small town and having everyone know her business had to suck. Especially since Dean wasn't actually a good person even though nobody wanted to see that. I loved how she was with her brother though. Jackson was pretty grown up for only being 10. He has gone through so much already and has to deal with some tough things at the end but hopefully he will find happiness like his sister. Micheal was an interesting character with a tragic past/backstory. He walked into Annie's life at the perfect time though. I loved how protective he was towards Annie almost immediately and could sense that things were worse than he thought. He was so good with Jackson also and slowly falling in love with Annie. He stepped in and helped and realized that he didn't want to leave without her or Jackson. I wish things had went a little different towards the end but thankfully things turned out for the better. In more ways than one! I definitely recommend reading this story! It's a new series from Jordan Ford with at least 4 to 5 books. I am really excited to read about the rest of the brothers and see where Micheal, Annie, and Jackson are in the future.
Annie lives in a small town where everyone knows everything about each other. She is usually the subject of the town's whispers due to an incident with her mother and feels trapped with her abusive stepfather. She dreams of getting out one day, but has to make sure she has enough money to take her brother Jackson with her. That's a hard thing to do when Dean, her stepdad, wants all of the money she makes.
Michael is tired of living a bad life. He was dealt a short hand in life and got sucked into the world of thieving and crime. Acting on impulse, Michael steals a bag of money hoping to get out. However, he's shot in the process and is forced to stop in a small town along the way. Here, he meets Annie.
Not one to turn a blind eye to those in need, Annie helps Michael, even though she doesn't know a thing about him. The two connect in ways that they never have with anyone else. While one is trying to run away from his past, the other is trying to run away from her present. When the past and present collides, drama is bound to unfold and they'll have to rely on each other to make it through.
THE RUNAWAY is a young adult romance that will take ahold of your heart. It's a story about two teens who want a better life for themselves, which is endearing and makes you love both Annie and Michael. Both characters are so sweet and have huge hearts even though other people don't take notice of it. I love the connection Michael and Annie form and the way everything plays out was written beautifully. It had me gripping onto each page, hoping things would work out for the two.
Final Verdict: I would recommend this book to fans of romance, coming of age, discovering yourself, and drama. THE RUNAWAY is the first installment of the Barrett Boys series and I look forward to reading the others. This Barrett boy stole my heart and I'm sure the others will to!
I went in to this book without really having any expectations, and I think that was essential to me liking it. It is a story that is quite heavy on the tropes, the biggest one being Insta love. While I usually hate that, it didn't bother me too much this time because the book contains a healthy mix of cliche and originality. First of all, I enjoyed the darker themes that are very central to the story, and I think it pushed the book away from a sort of sappy cliche territory. The setting, mainly Oklahoma, also made the story feel different and new, because I don't think I've read many stories centred in that part of America. Another aspect I loved was one of the main characters, Annie. She has a wonderful mix of qualities where she is both portrayed as full of happiness and sunshine, while also being unable to let thing go uncommented on and not stand up for herself and those she loves.
Now, what wasn't a fan of for this book was, unfortunately, the writing. It wasn't bad by any means, but it also wasn't anything spectacular. Personally, there was too much telling, and not enough showing. The good thing is that the plot and characters carried the story enough for me to ignore the writing, but I do wonder how much more I could've liked it if the writing had actually spoken to me.
All in all, a solid read and if this is a genre you very much enjoy than I recommend giving it a try!
Michael isn’t a fan of his job anymore. Annie isn’t happy with her current situation. These are two people who are so different but are going through things that are similar. Even though this may be a work of fiction theirs is a tale where situations could actually be true.
As I got to know these two, I found myself asking the same question “what is he/she going to do?” You will find no choice but to feel sorry for them but for different reasons. Then you begin to wonder how we are going to go from shocking and sad to happy – this is supposed to be a romance after all. Their life is rough and finding a way to change something that you think is impossible to change can be a hard thing to do.
If you’re always on the lookout for a new author’s work then you might want to check out this new series. Maybe you like a book where it’s going to pull at your heartstrings. You’ll see that there’s a sense of hope that starts to peek out as these two spend more time together. The author has told this story in the first person which allows the reader to be an observer instead of a narrator telling us what’s going on. We’ll get to see what their world is like through their eyes. You’ll be able to tell that the author’s not done with us yet by the way things were left. I’m interested to see which brother is next.
I was not compensated nor was I required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
This story was incredible. I loved every single second of it. All the characters, events and happenings were so well connected. The entire thing is a book worth reading. I didn't expect to like it as it seemed to be darker than my regular reads but it was perfect in every way. I look forward to Deeks' story!
First off the characters. They were wonderfully made. They seemed so realistic. I hated the villains and while in the beginning, I didn't like the hero, I started loving his character. He had so many layers. He was a lot like an onion. I could imagine this story easily. The heroine was amazing. Strong, independent, and caring. I hated anyone who hurt her right as they came on screen. I loved Jackson’s character even if it was relatively small. The characters were wonderful in every way.
Second, the story. It was incredible! The twists and turns were unexpected and the way the final comes hits hard. I loved every second of it from the moment the hero was shot to the moment the couple had their happy ending. I don't want to spoil anything so I won't say anymore.
Lastly, the execution. It was wonderfully written and this series is going to be a good one. I loved how the whole story worked from Annie to Dean to Jackson to Michael. Even Celia, Franks, Billy and Mirren added a whole lot to the story.
I received a review copy and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The Story: Michael is running from the mistakes of his past, both his mistakes and the mistakes of others. Annie is living in a nightmare. When Michael shows up at her diner, shot and trying to hide it, Annie knows she has to help him. What she doesn’t yet know is how he’ll help her in return with an abusive step-father and a plan to escape. But when his past catches up to him, it could destroy them both.
What I loved: Pretty much everything. Told in first person, alternating POV, the story flows easily between scenes, making for a one-sitting reading it’s hard to regret. Annie is trying to be strong for her brother in a town that scorns her. She’s such a great character and demands respect at every turn. Michael... or Michael, the broken boy. He’s so endearing it’s hard to imagine how he got so mixed up with bad men. There’s insta-love here, but it’s insta-love between the reader and the character, not between characters. Jordan Ford could write just about anything well and this story is no different. And that ending... I mean, I knew where they’d end up, but it was exciting all the same.
What left me wanting more: The ending. Really, just the fact it ended at all.
Final verdict: An engaging story full of characters to root for that won’t let you stop reading until the very last page.
Michael wants out of the mob, so on a whim he steals a bag of money and runs. But he is shot before he gets away. He's headed towards his family's ranch in Montana, not knowing what he might find when he gets there. He only gets a few hours away before he realizes he needs food and to stop the bleeding, so he pulls into a small-town diner. Annie's mother died and now she feels responsible for her little brother, because her step dad is abusive and threatens to harm him to keep Annie in his grasp. When the handsome stranger faints right in front of Annie, she just feels, in her gut, that she has to help him and keep it secret. Michael and Annie are two people who have been broken by their own family and this bond between them cannot be broken.
My heart just broke for Michael and Annie and how they spent their childhoods. They had to fight to survive. I loved the way Michael just took Annie's little brother under his wing. Annie's step father was a piece of crap ... who treats their family like that? And what happens at the end of book just makes me want to read what happens next. A great start to this series about five brothers.

I am so HAPPY I read this book. I absolutely loved it. I could not get Michael and Annie out of my heads. I read this entire book in one day. Every time I had to stop I keep thinking about the until I could pick it back up again. Michael and Annie have a story that keeps you on your toes. I was so emotionally invested from the first page. These two had my all up in my feels. This book is so powerful. It took us on a journey. It is full of blushing moments, as well as scary moments and moments filled with fight and drive. It was incredible. Annie and Michael are just so unique and so special. They are so alike in ways they don't even realize at first. The connection between them is real and deep. I love their love so much. It was cute while being so intense. I don't want to give anything away so just know this book is powerful. It is dark while also being cute. With characters that I would die for. I loved this book so much! It is my first 5 star read in a while!! I love Michael, Annie and her little brother Jackson so much. I need everyone to read this book asap. Get caught up in all the feels with me. I will never be over this book!!
>I am an independent reviewer. This book is the 1st in the Barrett Boys series and ends positively, while also setting up the second book. Annie’s mom died, leaving her in her abusive stepfather’s care. Annie is forced to drop out of high school and work in the family diner/bar. ALl of her money is confiscated by her stepfather. All Annie wants is to escape with her young step brother, Jackson. A stranger with a mystery and a bullet wound to the torso, Michael, comes to town and they fall for each other.
>The author has a real gift for letting the reader get into a character’s head. I could feel Annie’s frustration with the poor way her town treats her and her circumstances. The characters in the town were varied and fun to meet. I especially liked Franks and Billy. I wish a bit more of Michael’s time with Sloane was revealed. Michael’s decision to leave when he did really didn’t fit his personality. He could’ve at least waited until dark and took a bus.
>This book is appropriate for a new adult to adult audience. I am giving this book 4 stars. I love Michael and his early backstory was interesting, but his time with Sloane needed to be filled out more.
Want to be haunted by the ghost of your precious love.
Michael Barret is left alone in the world suddenly having to survive. He becomes a pickpocket to survive. He steals wallets and snatches purses. One day he pickpockets the wrong person. A sister of a mob boss. She is ruthless and cruel. Michael runs away from the mob. He is then shot and staggers into a small town with a population of 500. lol. There he stumbles into a diner and meets Annie. A pretty waitress who befriends him. Annie takes him home and mends him. They become good friends. Michael and Annie’s friendship soon becomes deeper and sweet. Michael hopes he will have a future with Annie before his past catches up with them. This is the best story I’ve read by Jordan Ford. It was frightening, sad, thrilling, and sweet. It was all of that. lol. I loved the characters they were three-dimensional and real. Jordan’s characters break your heart. I have one burning question for Jordan Will there be a playlist for this book? Please have one. lol. This is the third or fourth book I’ve read by her and will not be the last. I love her books. I am a big fan. I received a complimentary copy of this book by the author. I leave this review voluntarily.
So this book introduces us to the first Barrett boy to make his way home. Now if you’ve read I dare you )that was release in the holiday charity anthology called ‘tis the season for love) you will have already been introduced to the ranch and all the rumours surrounding these five brothers and their grandfather. In this book we meet Micheal he is a little on the bad boy side but he loves fiercely and is loyal. We see Annie who has lived her whole life being looked down upon until everything changes one day and everything gets turned on it’s head. I loved this story not only the growth of the relationship between Annie and Micheal but also the developing relationship between Micheal and Annie’s little brother Jackson. I cannot wait to meet the other Barrett boys and hopefully get a little more information on the mystery of why they all left that night years ago. The topic is brought up but you only get snippets and well I hope we get to see the others guys come home and reconnect much like grandpa ray will have wanted.
