He’s ruthless. He’s my new boss.
And he’s used to getting what he wants.

I’m drunk when I send my job application to Henry Marchand.
“It’s not like you’re going to consider hiring me anyway, you elitist.”
Yep—that’s actually what I write. Excuse me while I start tunneling to China.

When he summons me for an interview, I’m floored. But I’m also unemployed, so I say yes. Yes, absolutely, yes. He offers me the position of his personal assistant.

Is it the job I want? No. But his firm is brilliant, and I’m determined to work my way to the top. Nothing will stand in my way, not even an inconvenient attraction to my new boss.

He’s competitive, ambitious, harshly good-looking. His new favorite sport is challenging me—my limits, my wits. The chemistry between us soon sizzles and burns. Lines get blurred. Boundaries are crossed.

He’s not as cold as he seems.
And he wants me.

Hi there! I'm Olivia.
I write romance with billionaire heroes (despite never having met one in person). They're strong, ambitious, they don't need love... until they meet the women who change their minds.

I love witty banter, smart heroines, big cities and perfectly tailored suits. You'll find all four in every one of my books! 💜

Splendid romance read!!!

I liked the premise of this story very much. Faye was an architect hired by Henry, half owner of an architectural firm, as his assistant.

Faye and Henry were both so strong and competitive characters, mature and professional, I loved their banter and their determination. Yes, they had an amazing chemistry but both of them were trying to deny it due to their business relationship.
Very well written and developed story, with interesting and engaging plot, dual pov.
It can be read as a standalone regardless being the second book in a series!

Nice story . Faye writes a job application while under the influence. Knowing she would not get the job. She is very blunt in her application.
Henry reads said application and decides to give her an interview, then a job.
Both begin to have feelings for each other. Which end up complicating their lives.

Another light-hearted, charming romance by my now trusted get-me-out-of-a-slump author, Olivia Hayle!

⛵️ office romance
⛵️ fake dating to an out of town wedding
⛵️ multi-cultural MCs
⛵️ she laughingly rolls her eyes at his mild rudeness, he is captivated
⛵️ slow burn
⛵️ sailing lessons with a dip in the Atlantic

🏛️ Henry Marchand - 36 yrs old, French-immigrant mother, a senior partner in an NYC architectural firm. Finds himself in need of hiring a new assistant, again.

🏛️ Faye Alvarez - 27 yrs old, Mexican-immigrant father, an unemployed architect that drunkenly applies to a job advertisement and surprisingly gets hired on as an assistant to Henry. Faye was a wonderful FMC. A strong, fearless, educated, career-minded heroine that knows what she wants and goes for it. All without being bitchy 🙌🏼.

So I’m not sure that I would have classified Henry as being ‘ice cold’, more so a serious, straight-faced businessman. He is often initially described as having a blank, expressionless mask… but he was never mean or inappropriate. And that was fine! He was a wonderful MMC to watch be charmed by Faye and her teasing manner and fall in love.

💘 I loved how he tries to hold out as long as he can (to be professional) before finally giving in
💘 I loved their convo on how they come up with a fake story on how they met
💘 I loved their challenges to each other and exchanging unusual facts
💘 I loved how they described to each other their fantasies

🔥 very slow burn with steam that kicks in towards the latter half. Everything is done with emotions and class. No shock-value twitching and rearranging their junk or dripping panties to be found.

🎬 my only Grrrrr…. why was the third act drama his fault? I didn’t perceive it as something that he was directly responsible for. Regardless, his declaration of love at the end was very sweet and made me (almost) forget the mini drama. I never doubted their adoration for each other the whole book.

💬“Because being with Henry feels like being alive for the first time in a very long while, where achievement and status doesn’t matter. Where we just are, the two of us, understanding one another perfectly.”
~~~~~~~~~~
💬“Are you trying to seduce me, Faye?”
“Maybe,” she says. “Is it working?”
I run my hand down her cheek, down her neck, to where her pulse is beating fast. “You seduce me daily, simply by being you.”
PS: no condoms used (which I loved) but they never talked about if she was on birth control, etc. (which was odd) I thought there would be an “oh crap!” moment afterwards, but it was never talked about.
You know, I try to avoid books with titles like this one. The stories are unoriginal, they always - and I mean always - feature an imbalance of power. Meaning they elevate the male to superior status over the female. Certain tropes in romance are so recycled I'm shocked there aren't more complaints about plagiarism. Or misogyny.
But I digress.
This book one had a decent blurb, but it was a bit of a surprise that I actually liked it enough to read past the sample excerpt. This was actually a story with a plot instead of an insta-lust shagathon. It's a slow-burn with enough UST to ratchet up the anticipation without overwhelming the plot or making the characters appear shallow. The writer did not use sex scenes to fill pages, but instead used the space to develop the characters and tell their story, elements that are hard to come by these days.
So, the hero, Henry, was a wee bit inconsistent in the very beginning. His perspective made the whole 'Ice Cold' idea seem disingenuous. Because he wasn't that guy.
But perhaps that's just me. I rarely feel dual-POV is necessary or even helpful. I need my heroes to be enigmatic and I much prefer experiencing things through the heroine only, because that's how we experience others in real life. We aren't privy to their every thought or motivation. I experience a story better in single-POV, but it's hard to find these days.
Personal preference notwithstanding, Henry was likeable, if not particularly charismatic.
The big surprise was the heroine, Faye. I really liked her a lot. Kudos to the writer for creating a strong, smart and grounded female lead with class, who didn't have her brains between her legs. She was great, the perfect combo of beauty, brains and ambition without being bitchy, manipulative or slutty. Nice job.
She and Henry were an excellent match. Through no fault of her own she'd been fired from her job of five years and essentially blacklisted in her chosen field. Henry hired her for a position she was woefully overqualified for, but he never lorded it over her. The imbalance of power one expects in these stories was - thankfully - absent. Henry saw she was brilliant. He respected her talent and intelligence and knew she'd gotten a raw deal. Taking a chance on her turned out to be life-changing for both of them.
The storyline was pretty simple but well-executed and easily kept my interest. There was no OTT drama, which was another plus. I liked that the push and pull of their mutual attraction was equal and they both admitted they were at a disadvantage. That attraction was a little forbidden, and a lot inconvenient for two such career-driven people, but it was fun to watch them try to navigate it.
So why only a 3.5?
I am pretty tough with ratings, no question, but this was a solid 4 for me through most of the story. However, I was knocked back by the 'dirty talking Alpha' routine in the bedroom. No secret that I'm not a fan. But in this case it just felt out of character for both of them. It wasn't a lot, but it diminished the story for me just a little. So, I lowered my rating to a 3.5.
My personal preference doesn't matter though, because this is still a pretty good book. It's not too light and not too angsty. The characters are likeable and have a genuine connection, similar interests and goals. They are very much equals. I think anyone who likes office romances will enjoy this book. And now that I know what to expect from this writer I am interested in reading more from her.
Henry may be my newest book boyfriend. Olivia Hayle did such a great job developing her characters blending the right amount of coldness, maturity and depth in Henry as well as creating a female character that I would choose as a friend in real life. Most heroines have characteristics that make me wrinkle my nose, but Faye is the right combination of sassy, smart and strong.
1. What is the trope?
- Boss/Assistant
1. Are the character's developed in a way that makes me care about them?
- Yes, and so are the side characters. A good story will let you care about the main characters, but set up some interest in the side characters towards the end, and Olivia Hayle did just that - I want to know what is going on with Henry's brothers!!
2. Did the dialogue flow?
- Always, nothing was stilted or awkward to read.
3. Were the events believable?
- Yes.
4. Did any of the characters do anything that made you cringe in a "real people are not this dumb" way?
- No, these characters could walk off the pages and seemlessly blend into reality.
5. Is there anything you wish would have been different (without spoiling the story)?
- I really enjoyed this book, so I had to dig deep for something I didn't like. I will say that I thought the closing the story went a bit long. It could have been summed a bit more, but then I had forgetting about one of the key parts of the storyline, and she brought that around and closed it up, so I forgave the overly long closing.
6. What do you mean by your star rating?
- 5 stars for me means I absolutely loved it (even if it isn't my fave).
3.5 stars. I really enjoyed this but once again, the third act drama could have been done better. It wasn’t really awful, I just wish certain things were different. I’m really just sick of third act breakups, so I’m unlikely to enjoy any of them.
Safety is good
Hero not a manwhore, heroine not a virgin
Some slight OW drama from an ex of the hero
Both go on dates with others early on, but nothing happens on either date
No scenes with OM/OW, No cheating
This was delightful! The first thing that came to my mind after finishing this was that it's very classy. We are so used to having so much angst and so much tension and borderline cheesy sizzling in this kind of narrative but this felt very classy and very realistic.
Faye and Henry felt very complementary to one another. it felt very natural for me to see them end up together despite their obvious differences in class or whatever, but their characters are so similar and even the way they converse with each other feels so elegant and classy and so cute.
Cute little read ❤️️
2.5 ⭐⭐
I've been on a Bossman binge lately and quite frankly I have standards. I expect the man to be an asshole, I expect him to have a dirty mouth, to think dirty thoughts, do naughty things.
While Henry was sweet, this had nothing of that. 😩😩😩
And dammit if I wasn't taken in by that cover because hot damn that man is fiiiiine.
I like this well enough but not enough to rate it any because it dashed my expectations amd dammit if I'm not a petty bitch for it...
That application letter in Chapter 1? Sets the pace to a wonderfully funny encounter and interaction between the MCs. Top notch! 🤌
I really enjoyed this book. The MFC, Faye, is a force to be reckoned with. She's witty, talented, sweet, hard working and with a strong personality that doesn't come off as bitchy.
Henry, the MMC, I wouldn't call him Ice Cold, more like intimidating but in a very professional and respectful way.
It's lovely to see his inner thoughts regarding Faye, trying to control his reaction to her. Yes he is extremely attracted to her for she is an unusual beauty but also doing his best to show her how admirable and trusting he is of her wit and talent.
All good until lines blur, their attraction cannot be ignored any longer. And then the other shoe drops. Of course we needed a third act breakup, was this one justified? Well no, not in my opinion.
For weeks Faye was trying to push Henry into sleeping with her. He kept stopping for the sake of respect, for her reputation and quite frankly because he didn't want to lose her or her regretting them.
But lo and behold, this is exactly what happens, scandal happens and of course Faye is hurt, closes in on herself, regrets what happened with him and pushes him away. I mean... you went after him when he was trying his damn hardest to respect you and keep the relationship professional yet you are quick to blame him for the aftermath. That was low from the author and consequently from Faye.
Despite of it, I did enjoy it. The writing was entertaining and witty.
I love when we have scenes of the MCs with other side characters, specifically family members and best friends. It gives a whole new scope to the book and to others' points of view.
At the end of the day it is Olivia Hayle we're talking about and her books always hit the right spot.
Really enjoyed this book!! Boss - assistant / work is one of my favorite tropes. This was done excellently well!! I love Henry and Faye together, their banter was witty and intelligent. They’re both architects and I love how it’s a part of this book, it’s a romance but also showcases their love for architecture and that’s great.
workplace romance with stubborn girls >>>>
i should speak and put an end to this unexpected intimacy between us, but i find myself unable to.
“another staring contest, sir?”
the sir is teasing, and i can’t help the twitch of my own lips.
tbh i thought the build-up was going to be longer and idk the buzz fizzled when the feelings were mutual like i was kinda waiting for the end :(
“and then i do the unthinkable. i take a seat at his desk, in his chair. i don’t even look to see if he objects, reaching for one of his pens and beginning to write.” this moment was so sexy of her tho☝️
It was soo boring. No chemistry between the h/H. Sorry Olivia, I like most all of your other books but this was bland. Maybe it's because I'm over halfway through the book and there's no sex, one kiss, and it just seems like a copy of all the other cutesy drunk email sender books out there. 1.5*
Grumpy boss meets his match
Another fabulous Olivia Hayle story - this time with Henry and Faye.
When Faye gets drunk and writes the most insulting job application letter ever, she doesn’t expect to get called for interview. She definitely doesn’t expect to get a job with the very wealthy and good-looking Henry.
Of course, sparks fly between the two of them but they both understand that they shouldn’t cross that line; the boss should never begin a relationship with his employee.
But they can’t seem to help themselves. Conversations stray into the personal arena. Working late seems to become more enjoyable. When Henry asks her to pretend to be his date for a wedding? All bets are off.
But is sleeping with the boss a great idea??
I loved this one. It’s a little steamier than the others in the series and I think that’s because Henry is so damn grumpy and intense!
Henry is a grumpy, eldest son who seems to never enjoy life. When the stubborn, fiery Faye jumps into his life, suddenly his world is unpredictable and off-axis … you know he’s going to fall for her or fire her.
As with all Olivia Hayle, the conflict is minimal and the angst is low. It’s all about the slow fall into love between the billionaires and the women that attract them … I adore her work. The added bonus of this being a big family series means we can keep revisiting the couples that came before which is a lovely place to be.
The heroine is Faye Alvarez, a talented architect whose career took a setback when she got unfairly fired from an exploitative agency. She gets hired as a personal assistant by Henry Marchand who has a reputation for going through a lot of assistants. Their relationship becomes more personal but a relationship with the boss is another potential career pitfall for her.
Henry and Faye. Office romance, but the beginning is slow. Henry hours Faye as a PA Although she is an architect but her last boss refused a letter of recommendation after she refused his advances. She was not able to get a job, so she took the PA job at Henry's architecture firm. Working together brings them together.
From ruthless architectural integrity to hysterical drunk job application cover letter this book had it all. Faye and Henry's relationship starts professionally but does not end there. Will the spark that ignites the moment they met be the beginning of a new way of life for Henry? Or will it be the one thing that causes Faye to lose everything she has worked hard for? With wonderful character connections, beautifully written storyline and a hook that keeps the reader locked into the book this was another awesome read from Olivia Hayle. Ms. Hayle has a knack for creating honest and true characters that the reader cannot help but fall in love with.
