I quite enjoyed the last book, but I had some issues with the tactics and planning of the Empire forces. The problem is, this the story only works if they are idiots. In the previous book they had no plan to hold the planets they liberated, but I find it unbelievable that all they seem interested in at the start of this book is rebuilding palaces and choosing furnishings. How can they not think the Confederacy will retaliate?
Having got past this annoyance the story did improve and I was pleased there was some development in the planning and tactics involved in combating the Confederacy. I just hope the author will be a bit more inventive in the next book, if you are an ‘underdog’ you have to keep developing new ideas to counteract being massively outnumbered.
As for choosing furnishings and clothes shopping, I presume the author didn’t want the book to just be a ‘Space Opera’, that’s fine until it becomes a poor ‘Soap Opera’ and at times this book strayed into this area. Overall it was a decent story and I was happy to give three stars.

The adventures continue

Once again the confederation attempts to conquer the human empire, but this time they also send a fleet to attack earth. But there is a wild card in play. I am looking forward to book four.

Way too much emphasis and time spent on filler stuff like the princess and all her handmaidens. Not enough imagination when it came to the actual war and battles. Specifically, it's just a simple mind numbing battle of attrition, which earth should clearly lose extremely quickly when any normal sense of reality would indicate that when outnumbered 1000 planets to 1, you might need a technical edge to win. The premise is lame in that respect and I expected to see something more like computer virus's or something else to make this more believable.

I'm glad to see this series continue. It's a very interesting story-line with the humans of the Solar System seeming to be the heroes for a change. The Human Empire which once resided next to the Confederation, was destroyed by that same Confederation and for a long time, the Human Empire only existed as an underground operation. But, with the discovery of the Solar System, the Human Empire came back and now has their capital on Golan Four.

The previous Human Empire's royal family was brought out of stasis so that High Princess Layla Starguard and her cousin, Princess Krista Starguard could oversee the capture and re-establishment of their capital world, Golan Four. They and the humans on Golan Four are busy putting the royal palace back together while their military are busy building new ships and getting the once hidden resistance forces integrated into the new Human Empire military force. They have enough starships to prevent meaningful incursions by the Confederates although a lot of the planets and systems on the edges of the Human Empire were still exposed to attacks by the Confederation fleets.

The new Human Empire had learned some disturbing information about the Lamothians. They had a nasty habit of capturing and eating humans! That practice had been tolerated by the other Confederation aliens since there wasn't anyone powerful enough to object to that practice. Now they have managed to capture one Cheryl Bannon who just happened to be the girlfriend of Admiral Dylan, Fleet Admiral of the Human Empire! Needless to say, he was not going to allow the Lamothians to eat his girlfriend even if she managed to get herself in this situation by her own stupidity. The Lamothians had been warned about their disgusting habit of eating humans and now they were going to find out how dangerous that practice was going to be.

Meanwhile, since the Confederation couldn't completely wipe-out the Human Empire, they have decided to go after Earth and the Solar System. They are placing a Morag Admiral in charge of a huge armada that will far out number any fleet in the entire solar system. They intend to destroy everything in that system including making Mars, the Moon, and Earth uninhabitable for humans. Fortunately, the Earth humans learn of this pending attack and start getting their defenses ready. Will they have enough to say anything in the Solar System. Time will tell. It's also some what dependent on the competency of this Morag Admiral. Previous attacks by the Confederation have not done that much harm, but the size of this one is going to be a very, very big problem.

So, with the Earth humans on the defense and the Human Empire just getting back on it's feet, it seems the humans are just hanging on. Yet, they still have some fight in them and they don't take lightly to the Confederation feasting or humans or the constant attacks by Confederation fleets. The Confederation needs to learn that the humans are here to stay and they will defend themselves. The Confederation needs to worry about what will happen when the entire Human Empire can come back on the offensive. Their long held belief in their superiority is going to be severely shaken!

This series continues in book 4, "War for the Empire" and then in book 5, "The Confederation and The Empire at War". I'll be putting them on my reading list.

Easy, Scripted YA

Ancient Human Empire falls... they hide, and get banished, to primitive Earth. They live among us — ‘Imperials’, ‘Royals’, Who Knew? Alien Troubles come to Earth, Imperials — who’ve played us for centuries — give us some toys, we pledge them our love and fight a war for, with them. Because.... I don’t really know.

So there’s a war, we get attacked three times, while helping them restore a monarchy. In this book, we’re getting attacked by 8000 big ships and the Imperials are helping w valuable leadership but maybe more concerned about they’re weddings they are planning. Unfortunately, over half of this book becomes a teen ‘Royals’ romance and then even more space devoted to restoring palaces and Empire startup.

No depth to characters, action is formula, little boring and repetitive. Doesn’t take long to read, tho.

Good in some parts but...

More than half the book is dedicated to the two princesses and details of how to furnish the castle for lack of a better word. What would be best, is how we spend a big portion of the book, ok clothes for them or what to have to eat is another big chunk. The book could have been written in a third of its current size and been better. The action, what there is of it, is pretty good. He has always been wordy but it is getting worse. I was able to skin thru most of the book in about two hours without missing anything.

Another good quality military sci fi tale from the author. As typically for this genre one of a series this book moves the story along, increases the jeopardy, and reveals more about the parties involved. Credit due for once the usual space battles are far more strategically shown than most tales of this type, and the forces balanced in technology and numbers. As an Englishman the slightly fairytale way a constitutional monarchy is shown raises the odd smile. Generally an enjoyable read and I'll continue to stay with the series.

Not Recommended

I had to check when this book was published because the depiction of women is more like a 1950s book than one from the 21st century.

It’s frustrating reading about how one of the main female characters needs to apologise for going against her husband’s wishes and promising not to do it again. Not to mention the female characters that are waiting to be rescued by the men.

If you can get over this, there’s a half decent book here but it veers towards the young adult audience.

Very Entertaining

I thoroughly enjoyed this series. There was a lot of action and suspense. I disagreed with the tactics of Admiral Masters over the Durin home world. What is the point taking extra time and risk with surgical attacks on a planet that will be destroyed anyway? The Human Empire and Earth should tell the other races about the Morag being telepathic just to sew dissent in the enemy.

As the name suggests it is an action filled novel. An introduction of the Morag species, their capabilities and its limitations came as a little disappointment for me. I hope to get further information in the next novel. On the other hand I appreciate precise and thrilling desctiption of the battles. They make sense from both, tactical and strategical point of view. Again a very good novel, worth reading.

This was the third book in what looks like maybe four books (can't tell yet). At any rate the overall story is good but too much time is spent on two processes and their rebuilding of the posh lifestyle of a palace (its almost like filler). Lots of action between the humans and the nasty confederation, but I'm still waiting to see how we have two human homewards - in other two totally different worlds where humans were supposed to originate :-) I'm now looking to book four.

Great War Story!

This was everything I wanted and expected for a story named, “The Battle For Earth!” This was an effective story of what war preparation looks like , the lost of human life, great heroism, great victories and love for the characters making for a truly memorable reading . In reading this story I come to appreciate the author’s creative story telling that totally took me into action with the characters. Great reading and looking forward to Book Four!

INTERESTING BATTLE SCENES

The battle scenes are well choreograph, both in the battle for the Earth and Admiral Masters' raid of the Druim main world. But the intervention of both princesses continue to be a distraction taking the reader away from the main plot. They look childish, I mature and out of place, thinking about trivial things when the fate of the human race is at stake.

Truly another excellent book

After reading most of the books by this author, I find he has put together another great series of books. The Star cross / Slaver wars were an outstanding set of books and hope that this series follows on in being as good. I wish him good health in the future as well.

Well written, good story.

Events are interesting and do not take too !omg to come to fruishan.
Good story line and to some extent people in the plot have characters and are not left hollow.
The time periods used by all are strangely the same. Hours. Weeks months and years. Surely Aliens have different periods of time?
But a good read if over simplified.

Another really good space opera.

As 78 year old SyFy fanatic, I truly enjoy long stories about aliens. Some favorites are the Lensmen siries by. E.E. 'Doc' Smith, and Battlefield Earth by Ron L. Hubbard. I would place Mr. Weil along side of those and others of the 'Golden Age' of SyFy. l will continue to read his stories!

Battle for earth

Most excellent book. It would be interesting if the Morag have race that have been watching them for thousands of years. Maybe from another dimension and want to help the empire destroy the confederation.

My critique

Great book, but fell short of my benchmark author, E E Doc Smith. More action and less romantic adventures, no scientific advances , better shields, more powerful rays etc, will
Look for the next book when it is out.
Overall. “Good”

Good Story

I enjoyed this read and wasn’t disappointed that I picked up the series by this author. The were a few small parts of the book were the plot was a bit predictable, but that did not diminish the enjoyment.

Has held humanity met their march?

The enemy has a combined fleet of over 7000 ships, about two to one. Earth has prepared defenses but is a little over extended and needs more time. Hard to put this one down.
