Firstly, if your looking for a super sexy erotic tale keep looking cause that's not what this is. The romance we've gotten so far is very sweet and grows steadily throughout the book. It'll probably continue to do so in the upcoming books. That being said, I really really liked this story. I love the idea of a modern woman being thrown into th past, or in this case, another world, and having to adjust and survive. What makes it even more interesting to me is that its a black woman and the "past" is ancient east Asia, kinda. That's a scenario I've yet to see. Serenity, the heroine, was funny if not slow a times lol, but I forgive her lol. I think I would think like her in the same situation. The hero, Kang-Dae, was cool. I love how his personality shifts when he's with her and when he's in "duty" mode. Their relationship is really sweet and believable. They have a good back and forth that is endearing and has you smiling as you read. All in all, this is a strong start to the series. I'm curious to see where the author takes the story.

I'm conflicted

As a Black woman who's been a kdrama/cdrama fan long before it was "popular", I love, love, love the premise of this story. It's the execution that fails. Besides the grammar and punctuation errors, this story is also full of a lot of the drama cliches I hate. I'm also not the biggest fan of the writing style, but that takes backseat to my dislike of the cliches.

Over all, seriously love the idea, but the world building is lacking, most of the characters are flat, and the format of the story is odd. The POV literally jumps from one character to another to a third then back to the first all in the same chapter.

There's a reason I either don't finish dramas or start to skim through them halfway through. That's what happened with this book as well.

Fix the world building, all the grammar and punctuation issues, and develop the characters further. At this point, I'm not interested in book 2 but I am curious of how it ends.

Great book

A really great book. The only reason why I did not give it a 4 or 5 star is the typos. The typos were bad and it was taking away from the story. In sone passages I had a hard time understanding what was going on because of them. Also there wasn't a break when the story switched to someone else, it made it a little hard to follow.

4.5 ⭐s

The King's Seer isn't steamy, but a slow built romance. It's set in an ancient Asian-like civilization that you find out is actually taking place on a completely different planet where humans were transported to when Earth became too populated many many years ago. Serenity is a 1st grade teacher who gets transported to the Xian Kingdom when she falls into a fast moving river from a bridge. The story follows her as she tries to survive the court life in Xian, befriended by the Crown Prince, Kang Dae, her maid, Amoli, and the Prince's guard, Jung Soo. A slow building friendship between Kang Dae and Serenity promises romance. Politicians threaten them often too.
The story was very similar to what you'd expect in a Korean drama like Mr. Queen (without the gender bender).

My biggest issue with this book is that it read a lot like a web novel - the editing was lacking and the transitions needed page breaks to indicate a change in perspective. Have the editors ever heard of commas? I would have been really pissed if I bought a physical copy of this book with so many editing issues. A true disappointment because the book would have been elevated had the editing been taken more seriously.

But I like the story so I'm gonna start book 2. There was only 1 kiss and a dream that promised more, so I gotta know how it ends.

1. A lot of typos- misspelled words, missing punctuation, incorrect words (with instead of witch). This took a lot of the enjoyment out, having to stop and figure out what was being said.
2. No breaks or splits between character POV changes. And unnecessary characters: we hear 2-3 unnamed people plotting more than once, but it's not needed. Their plotting didn't enhance the story. It's pretty obvious who they are.
3. A CLIFFHANGER. This book ends with 0 resolution. Like, the author just thought "eh I'm tired I'll stop here" and sent it in to her editor, who decided to publish. And while the last page says there will be another book, it isn't listed on the author's page on GR yet.

Overall, this started promising but took a long tumble from the top.

Wow

This book blew me away and had me going through a spectrum of emotions. I loved the world building and the character development. Throw in the complications of being transported to a different time and country, or dare we say universe, and the shenanigans abound. I'm gonna start the next book later today because if I do it now, I won't get up and do what I'm supposed to do today.

I fell in love with this story. I'm now heavily invested! For the lead guy, Kang-Dae, I pictured Lim Jaebeom (yesss, he's my bias). I love the spukiness of Serenity. The world building is awesome. This slow burn is making my growing anticipation reach a whole new level. I can't wait for what to come next! It would be nice for Kang-Dae to travel to Serenity's world!!

Good Idea but I'm Unconvinced

*****Spoilers*****

Kang-Dae and Serenity, their story is a slow build which I liked because you get to know the characters as the story goes on and get to watch them come together through shared experiences. The story is interesting, it's different and I was anxious to get to the end so that I'd know what happened. There were certain parts of the book where I laughed out loud and was amused by Serenity. Both main characters, Kang-Dae and Serenity were likeable and I can easily see them coming together in a good way. That she's a foreign woman from some unknown land and is accused of being a witch is the biggest reason why Kang-Dae married Serenity. It was for her protection. Even though Serenity didn't realize she was undergoing a marriage ceremony at the time because she doesn't know the language, her eyes are on getting back home which is what Kang-Dae promises Serenity.
I think what made the book not as enjoyable for me was that it wasn't believable. From the reactions of the characters, to the dialogue, to honorifics, and even the sinister plots. It just fell short in convincing me of what went on in the story.

Brave Little Neeco

The King's Seer was both romantic and mysterious. It reminded me a lot of the book "Adrienne" by D. Renee Bagby, and the books from the"Fantasyland Series" by Kristen Ashley.

(WARNING: SPOILER ALERT!!!)

Therefore, I would say it is a 5-star book. However, I gave it 4-stars because the story felt slightly rushed, certain aspects felt too vague (the villains' plot and motives), the herione being tricked into a marriage she had no say in, the obvious grammatical errors, and the sudden cliffhanger with no clear knowledge of the release date for the next book. Besides that I enjoyed both the main characters and most of the secondary characters. I liked that the herione wasn't a complete delicate flower, and that the book wasn't filled with constant sex scenes. While this was a slow burn and the hero and herione have yet to consummate their relationship there was a lot of sexual tension.

Engaging but unbelievable at times

Overall, the story is great to read. I like that the author does not make the heroine want to stay with the hero despite falling in love with him. I also like that the author does not have it a real time travel but rather a travel to another dimension that could be in the past but maybe not. However, there are some times where I wonder if the author forgot that the heroine is black. One situation is where they go to the village incognito. Yes, I understand that this country is more diverse than what many Asian countries are like now and in the past but really, she blended in that well that no one suspected who she was.
But still the book is written well enough that I look forward to the next book in the sequel.
Forewarning- this book is a cliffhanger.

Real review 4.5 beautiful stars!
In terms of writing, eh - it could be confusing at times. It is written in third person, but Bethel would change the POV by starting a sentence with a new paragraph then write; "Serenity felt" or "Kang-dae was doing blah blah blah". I'm not a fan of this writing style, but it didn't have a huge negative impact on the story.

Though we only get a little romance in this first book; Kang-Dae and Serenity's relationship blossomed gently and steadily. Their relationship was not only believable but just so so sweet. Rather than the insta-love and insta-bedding that is the trend right now, their relationship was built on "putting your money where your mouth is", genuinely wanting to get to know the other person, and advice from the friends around them. At the end of the book, I believed and was rooting for the trust Serenity and Kang-dae had for each other. My heart ached in yearning while reading about their relationship.

Kang-dae wasn't EXACTLY levelheaded - especially when it came to the "ceremony" (for those who know, you know) - but he wasn't written like those men in TikTok books who growl or threaten anyone who looks at the FMC funny. Don't get me wrong, when I'm in the mood for a "touch her and you die" trope - I'm all for it. But I appreciate Bethel not presenting THAT as ✨ love ✨. He was realistic for the time this book takes place and for the position he held.

Despite the clear power difference, Serenity has a friend in her handmaid, and I was rooting for their friendship so hard. At one point (spoiler free) her handmaid defies protocol on Serenity's behalf. That scene really moved me. It's rare in these short, romance books to regularly see our MC's have a good support system. I applaud Bethel for this.

The story itself was believable - as a time travel romance can be lol. And I'm here for it! I am so excited to read the next installment and I have every intention of purchasing physical copies of the whole series. Ya'll don't understand, I NEED to cuddle these books!

I will never decline a recommendation from a mechanic again!

Who knew not getting all of the recommendations from your mechanic for your car could get you into this much trouble!!!!
Serenity is just trying to enjoy her last days of school break as a teacher but life won’t let her be great. Her friend is hiding out at her place and won’t go home to her man, plus said friend is a bug-a-boo too! The school sent her a notice that they’re cutting break short by a week and her car is acting up. She declines all of the mechanic says needs to get fixed but gets stuck on a bridge with a smoking car. Somehow she tumbles into feudal Asia with kings, queens, princes and a ruthless council. Oh and did I mention she has dreams and visions.
She experiences distrust, conspiracies, betrayal, assassination attempts, friendship, loyalty, danger, and more. When all of this could’ve been avoided by listening to the mechanic!
Hopefully she’ll truly understand her purpose for being there and survive! I’m reading the next book to find out!
Excellent read!

2.50 Stars. (BW/AM). An Audible audiobook read by Andenrele Ojo. Fantasy. Time travel and/or time folding from Earth to Xian, a distant planet inhabited by Asian-like humans. Slow burn romance. Annoying heroine, Serenity, a !st grade teacher and seer who sees the future via dreams. When Serenity tries to retrieve her ring and family heirloom, she falls into a river, awakens in Xian where she is suspected of being a witch and spy. The hero, Prince Kang Dee, thinks Serernity is harmless. When Serenity saves the Prince's life due to her vision, he takes her as his personal seer and the wife in order to save her life and secure himself as King and ruler. King Dee and Serenity's romance is nonexistent; however, she saves his life again and he vows to see to it that she goes home. The storyline is slow, the dialogue is unrealistic as is the world building. The premise of the story is interesting but the execution needs work.

Spoiler alert: WHYYYY

First let me say I loved this book! I picked it up on a whim, never having read anything from this author, but let me tell you this story line had me hook line and sinker. And as it went along it just got better and better. As I move through the story and became more involved with the characters I started to realize that I was running out of pages and reality hit...🥺this Damn book was going to be a cliffhanger!!!

Even though at the end of the book I was screaming and crying "WHY" for about 30 minutes (dramatic much 🙀), I would still highly recommend reading it... Now I'm off searching for more L.S. Bethel books and hopefully can find the sequel to this one. If the wait is long...Pray for me y'all.

I rarely DNF on purpose. But I read a one or two chapters into this. I could not stand how the MC treated her best friend. If I had a "friend" like her in real life, then I would drop them in a heart beat. It made me very upset, because the MC's best friend was in a violent domestic situation and she wouldn't even let her best friend stay the night- because the friend always has problems with men. If someone is your best friend and her home life isn't the greatest, then let her stay with you until y'all make an actionable plan. Anyway, the amount of character growth that would have needed to happen to the MC in order for me to continue reading on would be extensive...way more time than I would like since other authors have likeable characters.

Lovely

I enjoyed every minute of this book..don't care if grammatical errors were present...the adventure and everything that comes with it including different worlds.....different cultures..the usual political back biting..treacherous minions....gossipy upper crust who feel entitled and are undeserving of riches and high aristocracy....ignorance towards what they do not understand....racism and bigotry....oh sorry..I was talking about our Chump in chief and his evil minions....this is a budding romance between a beautiful woman drowning and ended up in a foreign world and becoming a Queen...

enjoyable read!

I really enjoyed this book. Like fantasy, drama, conspiracy all in one. A black girl wakes up in an unknown world and she has enemies just for showing up. I saw this was labeled as historical fantasy but in the book it says English is an outdated language. So is Xian in the past, future or parallel? I was expecting Jung-Soo to be interested in Amoli, so there was a twist there.

I wish there was more world building. A few grammar issues. The characters are lacking. Like I need more from them, more development. There also needs more breaks in the story. It sometimes feel like we were just jumping around.

I really liked it. But I really, really hate cliff- hangers. I liked the story concept, but I would like to see more attention on creative, realistic dialogue. It’s clear that the society is quite diverse, but the world-building could have been so much more powerful with some detailed descriptions of the city, castle, marketplace, etc., not to mention the people.
Don’t get me wrong, I want to see what happens, I like the characters, but it simply feels that everything could be more developed, which would make this a four or five starred review. I would recommend it, and hope to read more from this author.

Suspense is killing me

This story was amazing. I usually don’t get into historical fiction, but this is one of the few times that I’m glad that I branched off and tried something new. The plot and the characters were amazing. I enjoyed the banter between the two main characters. The FMC is so feisty and sassy I love it. The MMC is so smitten with her it’s sickening. The relationships developed throughout the story was my favorite. Even though she’s in an unfamiliar world she still found friends. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book and see what the council does, how the character’s relationship will grow and so on. I strongly recommend this story.

A build up that is worth a little patience

There is a little bit of a slow build up at the beginning and I was wondering what direction the book would take, but once it got rolling, I was captivated by the characters and circumstances. It’s an enjoyable read with twists, turns and lots of excitement. The author would to well to have some good proof readers to shore up the grammar and spelling issues to improve the flow of the story, but the story itself is well crafted. I look forward to reading more of her work in the future.

Unexpectedly good

I love historical romances, especially ones that fall into the bwam genre.

This is a slowburn romance which allows for good character and plot development. As a reader you really get to see how two people who are literally from different worlds can truly fall in love despite their cultural differences.

I love all the characters, there are some grammatical errors, however they did not detract from the overall quality of the story.

I'm looking forward to reading part two and will definitely seek out more books from this author.

Twist on Historical Fantasy.

I couldn't put it down. Such a refreshing story with cool characters an interesting setting and lovely blooming relationship. As it's the first book in the series it took time to build up the relationship but it was entertaining none the less. Very excited to see how it continues to progress in the next book.I think the author is really building momentum with her writing. Hopefully she comes out with the next one soon.

Great Book!!!!

This book brought out the reader in me. I haven’t read in over 6 months and had no desire to. When I picked it up, I didn’t want to put it back down. I would recommend this book to my friends but they do not read! It is their loss... The whole concept of the book was amazing. I loved the aspect of Serenity being a Dreamsmen and being able to learn to interpret her dream and if I say anything else I’ll spoil the book! Can’t wait for Pt.2!!!

Great Start

This is my first book by L.S. Bethel and I have to admit it was very good. I really enjoyed reading how Serenity and Kang-Dae's relationship gradually changed. And it has interesting side characters as well. There were a few spelling errors such as missing words. However, it did not detract from the story. I don't do spoilers. I will just say this a romance story with some sci-fi mixed in. Pick this book up, you won't be disappointed. Now on to book 2.

I give very few five stars! These books deserve it!

These are books you cannot put down! It is 12/22 and I have read the books that are already in Kindle Unlimited. I am 74, like I said, it is unusual for me to give any book five stars. All the books I have read so far by this author deserve five stars! I have a limited income but I will be buying all of these books. I cannot wait for the next book written. I am waiting!

Intriguing story and characters ❤️

The King's Seer is my introduction to L.S Bethel. The characters Serenity and Kang Dae have pulled me into their intriguing story of time travel, fated lovers, betrayal and traitors. Serenity sees the future of the kingdom through her dreams. Kang Dae and Serenity are connected. Serenity is a Seer and Kang Dae's Queen. Kang Dae is a Serenity's King. Together they are unstoppable !! I can't wait for Book 2 in this series.👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

I loved it, I had no problem with it, the heroine seems aloof at first but she grows on you. The hero is charming and affable and brave the fact that the story isset in an other world makes it all the sweeter. I highly recommend it! This is the first part of this story more in book 2 which has yet to be released.
