Jackson Hunt dreams of becoming a professional monster tamer - to capture, power up, and battle creatures called Djinn. But dreaming of becoming a champion and actually achieving mastery are two very different things.
Before he can ever become a champion, Jackson must tame his first monster - a wild feral Djinn left to him by his dead mother. And then there's the small problem of fighting in illegal underground tournaments.
Join Jackson and his team of Djinn as they level up, tame new monsters, and battle their way to the top of the league. Skills will be tested, powers unleashed. Victory won't come without a cost.
Books included in the set: Book 1: 'Starter' Book 2: 'Rivals' Book 3: 'Evolution'
Derek Alan Siddoway is the author of Teutevar Saga, a medieval western/frontier fantasy series, and Gryphon Riders, a young adult fantasy trilogy. He was born and raised in the American West at the foot of the Uinta Mountains. An Undaunted and Everyday Author, Derek spends his free time reading, obsessively filling notebooks, adventuring outdoors and celebrating small victories. He's also a sucker for Star Wars and football, namely the University of Utah and Minnesota Vikings.
I have read other books based on leveling up monsters and fighting them. It does have some similarities to Pokemon in that the monsters can evolve besides just straight leveling up.
The monsters in the story are called Djinn. They do combine features of animals that exist in our world as well as other attributes and special attacks. Jackson Hunt is almost turning 18, he and his grandma are trying to save up so that he can go to advanced school. He works as a ranch hand at a local Djinn ranch and helps take care of and clean up after Djinn. One day after work when Jackson comes home, there is a man there. His grandma tells him that they are going to lose the house and will have to move into a small apartment. Jackson and his grandma have had money issues since his mother disappeared before his 12th birthday.
That night Jackson can’t sleep, and he decides to go and find a way to make money. When he goes into his mom’s office, he straightens a picture and then it falls to the ground. Behind the picture is a Bioscan safe. After many tries, Jackson is able to open and find a card and gift from his mom for his 12th birthday. It is a rare Djinn. Jackson must continue to work, figure out how to build his bond with it and learn to become a Djinn Tamer. Since he is unlicensed, this means the underground fighting circuit.
Book 2 - Journey to the Bronze
Fiona Sato told Jackson that she had made the Djinn Battle League Regional training camp. The training camp takes local champions/nominees and puts them through a rigorous 4 week program. If Fiona got the invite for Tile, then Jackson didn’t make it. Jackson is working as a ranch hand again at the Sato Ranch. Mr. Sato offers Jackson an intern job and schooling to be a Djinn breeder. His only training as a Djinn Tamer is against multiple kids and their Djinn at the same time.
After waffling back and forth, Jackson decides to take Mr. Sato up on his offer. He figures that he can still try out next year to get into the Regional training camp. The next day, he starts some tasks on his training to be an intern. Fiona comes out to him fuming mad. She asks why he is giving up on his dream
Really this is great an I am starting to wish this was what Pokemon had been. Not just the games, the books never covered as much real world take. Eveyone makes the same comments so I am going to make it a liilte clearer. The main character loves djinn (pokemon) and Djinn battling. He is poor and works as a ranch hand on a local Ranch to be near Djinn. He is given a chance to get his very own Djinn and takes the opportunity to personally raise and battle with one. Mean while in his real life he needs to make enough money for him and his grandma to keep their home and eat.
This is a good round up from the starting of Djinn taming to the finale of the Bronze league with the personal and professional battles contained therein. Although the first part is a little slow the overall story arc is the usual underdog story and how those battles are weathered with great fortitude and perseverance. Narration was good from Wyman and suited this story well. Hopefully the next story arc Silver league isn't too far away as well.
Fun book for what it was... I had the same challenges with these three books as I had with the HP books... the author was writing the characters AS the ages they were in the narrative... and kids are annoying. :D But the action was entertaining and I'm looking forwards to the next installment!
