In an odd clash of medieval and modern city life, young Elijah Edge has to fight for his life against a mysterious knight—all in his own home. Trusty pal Rico helps him fight off all kinds of magical foe, leaving them in the care of a fairy.
After being trained by a Jamaican swordsmith with fantastic skills, Elijah is ready to face his new challenge. He accepts his call to action as the Black Knight and goes on an epic journey with old and new friends alike. The world is laid out rather clearly, with nice pacing and character design to really let you kick back and enjoy the read.
Elijah takes to his new role as savior of a world he never knew existed at a believable pace, using what real-world knowledge he's gained to navigate through it all. I rather enjoyed the bond between Elijah and Rico and love their little side-kick energy. The chemistry with Elijah and Aquas is also perfection. Tension and jabs galore, and it's all so wonderfully enjoyable to read. Fighting against the Silver Knights and the various obstacles that are thrown at our main character, Elijah really grows in this short novel.
This crossover portal fantasy really was a fun, fast read. Characters are believable and real, even the dragon flying around. It was a neat little story that could easily pave the way for a big series. I definitely recommend it if you enjoy urban fantasy with a medieval twist. With magical creatures, swords and sorcery, and a modern male lead, this story is sure to find its home on private shelves. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
