Weaving a Realm

Rate this book
Weaving a Realm is the first bilingual publication about Vietnamese ancient costumes. It provides a general introduction into the fashion of the Early Lê (1428-1527).

The content of the book is divided into multiple chapters, each of which covers a typical item of fashion in the Early Lê’s court. The audience would go from the most basic forms, such as Giao Lĩnh (cross-collared robe), Viên Lĩnh (round-collared robe), Đối Khâm (parallel-flapped coat), to the attires of certain classes in the court, including the Emperor's Hoàng Bào and the Empress' Địch Y,...

Inherited the spirit and knowledge from the previous classic works, such as “Vietnamese Costumes” by Dr. Đoàn Thị Tình, “Fashion of the Lê - Trịnh Era” by artist Trịnh Quang Vũ and “Thousands of Years of Caps and Robes” by scholar Trần Quang Đức, “Weaving a Realm” is expected to contribute a more easy-to-access source for those who want to learn about Vietnamese ancient costumes.

Besides the in-depth descriptions, the book’s vivid and beautiful images also help the readers to visualize the clothing and how to wear them. Some of them are famous ancient artworks and authentic artifacts. The rest are the contributions from the young artists and photographers, who are well-known for their artworks dedicated to Vietnamese culture, such as Hiệu Sicula, Nguyễn Hoàng Dương, Nguyễn Hùng, etc.

Weaving a Realm is expected to offer an interesting approach for those who want to know more about Vietnamese traditional costumes. Besides getting young Vietnamese and keen foreigners interested in Vietnamese ancient culture, the book can also serve as reference material for artists and designers.
