Trails spans three centuries, with most of the narrative in the Mountain West, from Idaho of the late 1970s, to the present day of Trump and coronavirus. People chase physical and moral courage while burdened by an old stigma.
While I like the idea of this novel, a story through generations mainly based in Idaho, the writing falls flat. It is almost like reading a screenplay, being told a list of events that occur rather than being swept into the story, it never feels like you’re truly being taken into the experience. I also felt the last few books were rushed through, with most of the novel being spent on the older generations. A good read for an Idahoan or anyone curious about the history of those that came before them in the West.
