cw/tw - rape, murder, sex scenes (pretty common themes with Guilt Pleasure)
okay. i have mixed feelings. it's very short and many ideas are thrown at us. this could have been so good if some things were added and others taken out.
the illustrations are, as usual, absolutely stunning and so detailed. i can't stop looking at them. the face features are.. breathtaking.

This story ultimately suffers from being way too short. This is a very very plot driven book, but with a story that should have been and wanted to be character driven. Because the characters are just running around, trying to get to all the plot points, there is no character development, because there simply isn't enough time for the characters to develop. Because of that, I just didn't feel invested in this story at all.
For a story that is supposed to be about an artificial human that may or may not develop genuine human emotions, that didn't get across at all. I feel like I don't even know the main characters. I genuinely can't understand why Vincent behaved the way he did, why he was supposedly so invested in Kai's fate. At times it literally felt like Vincent just wanted Kai to have emotions, but Kai never gave me the impression that he did.
This had a very promising premise, but I know the author's could have done a way better job at executing it.
The topic is very close to my heart. Where does 'object' end and where does 'human' begin? What does it take to assign soul to something? Where do we start to treat something as 'living'. Doll was saved on my hard drive from before it was removed from GuiltPleasure's site but despite my interest somehow I never got to read it. Dunno why. Now when I did I have the feeling that it ended different than I expected. A bit uncharacteristic for GP. It is kind of... staggering in its flow too. Not that I dislike it. Most recommended for every BJD owner and fan.
I guess I waited for this publication over almost 2 years. 2013 I heard about it but I couldn't read the preveiw cause these were taken down from the GP-website after they had to deal with some sort of copyright infringement.
2015 after a long period of patiently waitng The Doll was published. And it was worth waiting for it.
Lynch is my second favourite character of all GP works after David. *^* Looking forward to read Persona non Grata, the sequel of the novel. :3
