Different Hearts #4

Healing Carson's Little

Rate this book
An MM Age Play Romance

One little who doesn’t want to be a little anymore.

After running from an abusive past, Miller Doran knows he never wants to be another Daddy’s little ever again. He’s happy with his tiny apartment, his faithful cat companion, and his steady job at the local coffee shop… or so he thinks.

One Daddy who won’t stop looking for his special little.

Even as a Daddy Dom, Carson Watts’ needs have always been a little too specific. So he likes his boys in pretty pink dresses with bows in their hair while they play with dollhouses and makeup. Who knew finding little boys who like girly things would be so hard?

Two people thrown together by circumstance find everything they never thought they would.

Always a sucker for fantasy, Miller accepts his best friend’s invitation to join his Saturday night D&D group. The game goes well until one slip-up tells Miller he’s in way over his head. Once more sucked into the community, Miller must decide once and for all if the little lifestyle is right for him.

WARNING: This book is intended for Adult (18+) readers. While not all books in this series will feature Age Play or Daddy Kink elements, this book does. I understand this kind of content is not for everyone, and if this is not your cup of tea, feel free to skip this book. I try to write all books so that they can be read and understood as stand-alone stories. However, reading them all together will create a more complete and rich experience as past characters can and will make surprise appearances.

This started out really strong. But the second half was not what I’d hoped.

We meet Miller in this 4th installment. Miller has decided he would no longer be a little, since his only experience with the lifestyle and his former daddy wasn’t that great. His ex called himself a Daddy, but was really just an abusive asshole. And that’s why Miller is now just Miller..

When Miller meets Lee at the coffee shop Miller works in, he’s not sure what Lee wants from him. Turns out Lee just wants to be his friend. So when Lee invites Miller over to play some Dungeons & Dragons Miller hesitantly accepts..

Carson is the Daddy who owns the BDSM club The Church with his best friend Foster. He and a few friends get together every Saturday to play D&D, but now they’re a person short. Carson is happy to hear that Lee will be bringing a friend.

When Carson sees the shy young man Lee has brought he can’t take his eyes off him. But Miller looks uncomfortable and acts spooked all the time…

I was so ready for this hurt/comfort fest. But that wasn’t what this was. It was so strange that Miller starts out as this shy, scared guy, who has obviously been abused before, to this bubbly little who wasn’t scared at all. The transition was way too sudden and unrealistic.

And I was waiting for Miller to explain to Carson what kind of abuse he went through, but we got nothing on that front. Miller only ever mentions his former daddy was an abusive asshole. But I would think it would be important if this was mental abuse, physical abuse, or both? Or even sexual abuse. That way Carson could be as careful with Miller as he needed. But it was all kind of swept under the rug. Like it was just a bad experience and that was it. But that wasn’t what was implied in the first half and didn’t correspond with the way Miller was acting at first.

The first half also had a good balance of show and tell, but the second half we suddenly only got told about certain things taking place instead of witnessing it ourselves. Like how Miller meets Carson’s parents. We get told about that in two sentences and that was it.

The book is called Healing Carson's Little, but there was very little healing going on. Just a sudden, 'I'm totally fine and no longer suffer from the effects of former abuse!'

The author explains in her afterword that Miller and Carson took her on a journey she hadn’t planned out that way. And to be honest, that showed.

I absolutely loved the other 3 books and the first two are among my favorite age-play books. But this was a bit of a jumbled mess.

Another wonderful book by this author. It was lovely and sweet, as always. While this book does have some sad and emotional parts, the HEA was beautiful and satisfying! I just wanted a bit more of Miller's back story and more of 'healing' moments because his sudden change seemed stilted. But I still enjoyed reading this. All the book in this series was worth reading and I can't wait to read Foster's story!!

I actually really enjoyed this book. Admittedly I didn't have very high expectations but i think it was well put together. This wasn't like an epic tale or mind-blowingly engaging but i liked the simplistic nature of it. I was suprised by how much i enjoyed the side characters and for the little snippets i saw of them i will be investigating whether or not they have stories (especially Foster and Lee). Also I like this type of Little/Daddy relationship where the regression isn't so severe.

Rushed and too vague

I hate leaving this review. I’ve been eagerly awaiting Carson’s book, and even though his little liking frilly pink dresses and makeup isn’t my kink, I was still excited to read it.

The first part of the book, up to about 56% was going just fine, you were gettin the kind of book you expected with all the feels. I will say some of the things from Miller’s past really should have been explained better because I didn’t really understand how he was abused in such a way to create such a reaction. I’m not saying anything about real life abuse survivors, I’m saying in a kink book, where the Daddy’s best friend is a sadist there is a certain amount of difficulty you have to reach to help the reader understand quickly so you can move on with the story and the reader can connect with the character and that didn’t happen for me.

We had a few sentences in the early part of the book that explain that Miller wasn’t talking to his parents, cool, fun fact, and I expected that to be the end of it because the abusive ex was the obvious bad guy.

Carson’s and Miller’s kink just didn’t seem to translate to the written page well. Their sex scenes seemed really rushed, it was literally wake up, the BIG sex scene, then rush with the rest of the day, and the others felt like they all ended in immediately going to sleep. It didn’t bring the normal level of feels Ms Winter is known for.

The last half brought this book down to three stars. For an author so good at showing us her characters falling in love, we breezed past weeks/months? Of their relationship to go down the unexpected—and for me, unwanted—rabbit hole of uniting Miller back with his family. This took too much attention off the couple, it made for a book with a lot less kink, and felt rushed in a very unsatisfying way.

Sadly, when I got to the epilogue, I didn’t care anymore about Miller, or Carson, or much of anything.

Supporting characters didn’t really get me excited about future books like the others have. I have no desire to read Foster’s book, Lee didn’t strike my interest, Law is a mystery that didn’t provide me with enough information to get curious, and the brothers Kyle and Kane barely had speaking parts. Red is Red, oblivious, clearly one of the authors favorite characters, and yet, is really only there as a plot device which is disappointing. I don’t even remember the other two characters at the D&D game—they were that uninteresting. The “boy” at the end of the book with the bad Dom didn’t even get a name, so I can’t care about him, and I’ll just say that once again, I didn’t know what the bad Dom was doing that was so bad that he got banned—more detail, make me care!

However, the cutest part of the whole book actually came between two side characters that I’ll be watching for in the future, Billy and Bea were adorable in there scene and I want to read more about them. Remi also sounds intriguing though I can’t say I’m eager for his story.

At the end, there was no book preview for what’s next, just the promise it will be Foster’s book. Since I’m a VERY hard “No” on books about sadists, I’m out for the next book at least.

Hoping for better when I return. I really do not want this author to have peaked at only three books.

“Do you want to be pretty for me? Be my little doll?”

A super sweet age-play romance. Loved the comfort, the gentleness, the caring…. And the spice, of course.

“You feel so good strangling my cock, little darling. You’re so tight for Daddy.”

I needed a hug and this book delivered.

He felt like forever.

And just like that I'm reminded of how much I love age play

I'm going to do things a little different this time. I'm going to talk about what I didn't like about this book. You see the star rating. Obviously I loved this, but I'm not so delusional to think that this is a perfect book. It's not.

The writing is very basic, almost to the point I felt like I was being spoon-fed. And there was a serious math issue in here. The age that Carson is coupled with how much time he spent in the military and going to college just doesn't add up. Then there's the fact that a couple of times things were admitted in a sentence that I could tell was an artistic choice, but it ended up hurting line and me out of the scene a little. This is Izaia Winter's fourth book, it's time to get a beta reader. BUT, that being said, I still thoroughly enjoyed every single second of this book.

You can read the synopsis for yourself if you want to know what this book is about. That's not what I do in my reviews. I'm going to talk about what makes this book amazing and why it is a prime example of what an age play book should be.

Number one, Miller is an adult. Now I know that's probably an obvious fact but there are scenes were Miller is a functioning adult. Yes he has a past, yes he has panic attacks (which were beautifully described by the way), and yes he's not where he would like to be at his age. But he's still an adult. He has cognitive reasoning, he knows how to function, he has a job and friends. He just so happens to have this kink. He's not a childlike adult, he's an adult who's a little. There's a big difference between the two and not enough people know that.

Number two, Miller had a support system. I hate when books don't give characters friends. I don't care if it's a romance or just adult literary fiction, your main character needs to have friends or family or someone in their life who can act as a support system. When you take that from them, you're actually hurting them. And in a book about BDSM a support system is vital. Miller has one, BRAVO.

Number three, Carson knows when to be a daddy and when to be a boyfriend. There's a scene that I'm not going to get into it because it would be a spoiler but it's a scene where Carson steps away from being a daddy and just turns into Miller supportive boyfriend. That is so important in these types of books. A clear understanding of when you're playing and having your sexy dynamic and when you just need to be there for your partner.

Number four, the cat. I'm a crazy cat mom so I'm going to talk about this. That is how cats at. That is how Kat parents Act and that is literally what it is like to own a cat. Thank you for not treating cats like fuzzy demons like so many people seem to think that they are.

Finally number 5, the smut. As somebody who's read all of Izaia Winters books I can tell you her confidence in writing smut has grown. It's hot, it's consensual, and Carson's dirty talk was very swoon. I do kind of wish the dollification aspect played a bigger role but I'm content.

This is why I read age play. Miller is adorable and so over-the-top like how littles actually are. I don't know if Izaia Winter's just researched the hell out of the topic or if she knows people in the lifestyle but the woman knows how to write a little. Carson's fabulous too, don't get me wrong. All the characters in the story are pretty great. I can't wait for my puppy play story. I was dying of laughter at a few points here. And yeah I know the jokes by themselves weren't that funny but they're the types of jokes that among a friend group are hilarious. This was so thoughtful and well done. It was super cute and I loved it. 5 stars because I was reminded of how much I love age play.

Reread: I love this book. I know the story, the characters, the plot, but it still makes me cry and laugh and all the things in all the same places. It’s an excellent book. And excellently written as well.

When I say I want Daddy kink, age play, etc. this is the series I think about. I’ve read so many books similar to this one (and Ollie’s, book 1), and yet none of them compare. Be it the story, the writing, the play, anything. I enjoy this book so much.

I was a little disappointed in this one. It was a sweet book, but I felt like Carson's character was a little more than "sweet". He's the owner of a BDSM club for pete's sake. Something just felt off with him.

Miller was sweet, went through a trauma, has panic attacks at just the thought of something, but then is healed from a hug, lol. Yeah, it just didn't work for me. Not to mention, he fit Carson's "ideal little" way too easily.

Carson and Miller

Okay, so not my fave in the series, but that’s just my own personal preference, nothing against the story at all.

First, we have Miller, who after getting out of an abusive relationship that someone who took advantage of his vulnerabilities, was set on hiding his little side and not trusting anyone with it ever again.
He was lonely and lost, but he was, and that was good enough for him. He’d already lost his family when he left with the ex, and was gaslighted enough to cut out his best friend, so he was alone apart from Lee, who came into the shop he worked at.
I liked Lee a lot, but I didn’t trust him at first. I kept waiting for him to do something to hurt Miller or set him up... am I the only one who felt that?? He didn’t tho, he was actually amazing... he’s who introduced him to Carson!

Carson, who owns his own kink club, has been yearning for a little. Not just any ol little either, one that likes pretty pink clothes and glitter and to be a princess. Cute right? I thought so.

I didn’t get into the whole D&D thing, so I skimmed most of it, I just couldn’t follow along, but it didn’t take away anything from the story...I just didn’t understand.
Anyway, it took Miller a bit to trust Carson after learning his kink, but Carson was always patient and understanding and he just wanted Miller to be safe and happy. That’s all any good Daddy wants, right?

Overall it was very cute and I’m not sure how I’ll feel about Foster being a sadist.. that’s not really my bag either and in this one he seems so silly and light hearted, it’s going to be hard to see him in another light. I dunno... we shall see, I reckon.

3.5 stars from me

Pretty in Pink

Miller is so adorable in pink. It truly is his color. I can vividly picture him with his buns and pink boots. Carson has to be the epitome of the perfect Daddy to indulge Miller in his true self. I just loved this book and I agree with the author that they are my new favorite couple in this series so let us indulge for now. I'm so excited that Foster is next up. He is so snarky and always teasing Carson so it will be nice to see him hopefully find his true match. Highly recommend this series.

This could have been a 5-star read for me, except it was missing... details? substance? I don't know what to call what I needed... but I needed MORE! *headdesk* :(

I loved the way Carson was such a wonderful Daddy and that he knew what a little needed to be happy and was caring enough to ask when he wasn't sure what the next step should be in his and Miller's relationship. I also loved all the frilly pink dresses and pink bedroom and pink nail polish and pink boots... yeah, Carson has great taste in "little" clothes and boy was it just perfect for Miller's little self! *grin*

Miller had some issues that needed to be dealt with and Carson was more than up to the challenge... with the help from a few friends! *shakes head*

I won't go off on a rant (I know, I probably will...) but let me just say... We take care of our own because no one else is going to take care of us! If more families would just apply this one rule, the world would be a much better and safer place for everyone... people aren't meant to be thrown away like yesterdays trash. If you have kids... just love em'! The rest will work itself out!

Alright

I loved Miller and his cat Carson was a sweet daddy but I only finished out of curiosity to see if the evil ex turned up..I was disappointed that he didn't..My main issues with this was that their relationship seemed really rushed and the over description of meaningless things annoying..I unlocked the door then opened it got in the front seat put the basket on the floor put the key in the ignition and started the car...to many words for no reason..

My favorite book in the series so far 😍! Loved it so much. The ideal balance between sweet and sexy. The couple was what I loved the most, they are so cute together. The communication, the trust, the chemistry, everything. I can't wait to read more about them in upcoming books.

I sadly have to admit that this is my least favorite book in this series so far.
The beginning of the book was really good. It was different to the others in that one of the mcs actually came out of an abusive relationship and seems to struggle in life because of it. Therefore I assumed that there would be struggles with this new relationship as well, since naturally Miller has trust issues and fears have built up. However nothing like that happens they come together and it’s just as nothing ever happens in Miller’s past.
Besides that there was something about Carson that I didn’t like. I can’t really name it but I felt like he had his own interest more in focus then Miller’s and maybe it’s just me but gosh I don’t know.
There were some really cute moments and I liked that he supported mMiller with his family but still I can’t get myself to like him much.
However something I do like is his relationship with Foster. You can feel that they like each other a lot and have been friends like forever.
I also love Lee and I am happy we got introduced to him in this book. Also got to see a tiny little bit more of Law. I am so curious about them and hope they will both get their own books. Same goes for Kane and his brother.
Now I am looking forward to Fosters book because I really like him a lot too.

This was okay but I noticed someone else said it goes from "I'm deathly afraid and shy" to seeming to adjust just fine. Still, it wasn't bad and I did like to see Red and it was funny how they were all trying to downplay the BDSM/kink side when they were playing the game but as Miller pointed out, you'd have to be blind not to notice. Millar likes "girly" things and pink and frills and dresses and it just so happens that's Carson's kink! Surprise. LOL But it's romance and fantasy. I get it. So it was okay and I would love to know more about Lee because I love a puppy story.

I did notice though that this could have used another read through by a proofreader. There were a fair number of spelling errors or the wrong word. I'm pretty easy going and can gloss over a lot but it pulled me out a few times.

This was okay. I felt sort of out of place during the entire story. It seemed like Miller had been brutally hurt by his past boyfriend, didn't have a social life, was afraid of getting out, yet as soon as Carson showed any interest, he was out and proud and dressing up. It just didn't mesh for me.

Kinky and sweet

This was kinky and oh so sweet. Despite the MCs off page history, this story was relatively low angst. I'm definitely intrigued by some of the side characters and a hope they too get a HEA.

I am totally in love with Carson and Miller. The sweetness of this book really surprised me, maybe because after the last one, I wasn't expecting it. The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is because it took a long time for the story to really take off, and I wanted more.

4 stars. Carson and Miller were absolutely perfect for each other. I loved both of their characters. This one was a bit slow going in the beginning but it was definitely worth it in the end. Miller goes through some fantastic character development and with everything that he had been through, my heart hurt for him. I was so happy to see him get closure and rebuild his relationship with his parents. Carson was wonderful and so supportive and patient. Their relationship was precious. This book had a lot of heart and emotion in it. I adore this series to pieces and I hope there's going to be more books to come.
