Welcome to the Barks & Beans Cafe, a quaint place where folks pet shelter dogs while enjoying a cup of java...and where murder sometimes pays a visit.

With the one-year anniversary of the now-successful Barks & Beans Cafe approaching, siblings Macy and Bo Hatfield set up an iced coffee booth at the state fair. Taking a break from brewing, Macy bumps into Carolina, a long-lost childhood friend who's now sitting pretty as a country superstar. Macy tries not to fangirl too hard when her old friend extends an invitation to meet the rest of the Carolina Crush band before their opening show.

But when Carolina falls victim to not one, but two near-death experiences, Macy takes it upon herself to find out who has it in for her old friend. Fortified with plenty of roasted corn, cinnamon rolls, and her brother's signature iced maple latte, Macy takes to the Ferris wheel to get the lay of the land from the air. She discovers too late that this year's fair isn't all fun and games...but she's already locked in for the ride.

Join siblings Macy and Bo Hatfield as they sniff out crimes in their hometown...with plenty of dogs along for the ride! The Barks & Beans Cafe cozy mystery series features a small town, an amateur sleuth, and no swearing or graphic scenes.

Most readers of this third installment of the Barks and Beans Cafe Mystery series will have read the previous books; and it's really best to have done so, because some aspects of the plot and relationships build incrementally on previous developments. Likewise, most people reading this review have most likely read my reviews of the earlier two volumes; and all the general comments I made in those would apply with equal relevance here. So it's probably not necessary to provide a very long review here; it would inevitably involve a lot of repetition. :-) However, the book itself doesn't have a repetitive feel; we're getting used to the community and to our small circle of continuing characters, who by now are old friends, but the author knows how to vary her plots and situations with each outing for series protagonist Macy. I didn't say “series sleuth,” because Macy isn't exactly one. Mysteries rear their head in her vicinity, and she gamely tries to investigate them (and she can be plucky when it's needed, too!); but when the mysteries get solved, it's not typically by her deductive efforts. Jane Marple she definitely ain't. :-) (But that's okay –we like her for who she is!)

This particular book takes place over just a few days in the summer following the events of the prior book(s). Specifically, it's August; so, coming closer to the first anniversary of the opening of the Barks and Beans Cafe.' More noticeably, it's the month of the annual West Virginia State Fair, which really is held just outside of Lewisburg (as noted in an earlier review, the latter is an actual real-life place). When our tale opens, the fair is open as well, and the Barks and Beans crew have set up an iced coffee booth on the fairgrounds, in quest of publicity and added sales. Musical entertainment for the fair-goers is to be provided by (fictional) country music superstar Carolina Garten and her band. Though she moved to Tennessee when she was eleven, Carolina's a Lewisburg native; and though they lost touch after she left, she and Macy were schoolmates and best friends in their early years. A chance meeting lets them reconnect –but that night, Carolina winds up in the hospital with what proves to be Digoxin poisoning, and it clearly wasn't accidental. From there, Macy goes on to get a bird's-eye view of a high powered country music milieu that's rife with intrigue, secrets, and dark agendas.

My wife liked this book as well as the preceding ones. I actually liked it a bit better; I felt the plotting was tighter, and the mystery elements were more challenging. (Then two, the comic relief provided by the antics of the shelter dog Waffles had me chuckling out loud in a couple of places. :-) ) Again, recommended for fans of this type of fiction (but read the preceding books first!).

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Macy and her brother Bo take their cafe on the road all the way to the state fair. While Macy isn’t excited to learn to make the perfect latte she is excited to see her childhood friend turned country superstar. Carolina is the lead singer of Carolina Crush and is delighted to give Bo and Macy VIP tickets to their show.

Someone isn’t happy with Carolina though as evidenced when there are two attempts on her life. Macy not only gives her friend a safe place to stay, but she also vows to do her best to find out who wants her dead. Is it a crazed fan? or someone in the band? maybe even her husband?

All my favorite characters are back in Fair Trade. I just love Macy and Bo and the way they work together, each with their own strengths. They always have each other’s back. We continue to learn more about Bo’s past as it pops up a little more in each story. I also love Macy’s Great Dane Coal. He is very protective of his person. Makes me long for one of my own but maybe a smaller breed. Waffles also returns in this installment. He is very energetic and mischievous pup and still looking for just the right owner.

I really enjoyed the drama-filled mystery. I was all over the place as to who the guilty party was and then the author threw out a corkscrew twist and turned everything upside down. The author really keeps her readers on their toes and totally entertained.

Each Barks & Beans Cafe Cozy Mystery delivers a wonderful cast of evolving characters, an intriguing mystery, along with animals that will steal your heart. They can each be read on their own but to really get to know the characters you should read the series from the start.

Heather Day Gilbert has done it again. In Fair Trade, she has given readers another Perfect Escape. I can’t wait to read Spilled Milk set to release April 19, 2021.

Fair Trade is another quick and fun installment to the Barks & Beans Cafe series! I adore Macy and Bo and love the small-town feel of these books. While I do love the café setting of the previous books, it is fun to go to the fair with Macy, Bo, and their staff to sell iced coffee to fair-goers. Macy reconnects with an old friend, Carolina, who now fronts a country music band that is enjoying significant popularity. However, Carolina also seems to be the target of two attempts on her life, and Macy can’t help but be compelled to help her old friend.

I loved the cameo of Tess Spencer – that was a fun Easter egg for this reader, since I adore Tess like she’s my personal bestie. The rambunctious shelter dog, Waffles, is back in this story as well, causing chaos wherever she goes. I appreciate the continuity that appears throughout these stories – relationships grow and develop over time, and Gilbert can take her time to do so because they can be spread out versus jam packed into one book. There are several relationships that I’m eager to see how they play out, especially one that means possible dealings with a villain. I wouldn’t argue against a bit more Titan McCoy either! Alas, I guess I'll have to wait until book four to find out what our protagonists get into next!

I received a complimentary copy of this novel from the author. This review is my honest opinion.

Heather Day Gilbert certainly knows her way around a cozy mystery. I've been all in with this series, loving Bo and Macy Hatfield and their cafe with a dog area. I want to visit! I'd just stay all day with the dogs. And Coal! That dog is so precious and such a wonderful character. I find myself wanting to snuggle up to him on the sofa where he takes up all the room nearly. And they mysteries are good, too. I never guess the culprit, though. I am such a poor detective. I am looking forward to the next one. And more of the amazing Titan McCoy. Please? Recommended.

*My thanks to the author and publisher for a copy of this book. The opinion here is my own.

Review:

The characters are well rounded and well developed. Macy and Bo are siblings that get along very well. They have a business together--Barks and Beans Cafe. People can enjoy some coffee while playing with shelter dogs. Macy is excited to see her old friend, Carolina, who is now a big country singing star. But it seems as though things are not going well for the country star when two attempts are made on her life. Macy, along with the help of her brother and some friends, have to figure out who is behind all the trouble before Carolina is permanently silenced. The relationship between Macy and Bo is heartwarming and endearing. And Coal, Macy’s Great Dane, is as lovable as ever and wants to get in on the investigation.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is a quick easy read. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and brought the book to life in my mind. Whether I was reading about the state fair or Waffles, the crazy shelter dog, I was into it one hundred percent. The mystery was well plotted and the ending was a bit of a shock, which I love.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. This whole series is very good and I cannot wait to read the next one.

"I couldn't shake the feeling . . . . "

Discovering a childhood friend among the crowd at the West Virginia State Fair seemed coincidental at best, since this particular friend of Macy Hatfield was a nationally known country music star. As the two reminisce, they make plans to meet again over dinner . . . . only the after dinner plans turn deadly for Macy's friend, the famed Carolina Garten.

In true Hatfield fashion, Macy turns over every leaf and rounds every corner trying to determine who had motive to nearly kill Carolina. Actually, it seems like a lot of people did. But it's what Macy views from above the fairgrounds aboard a Ferris wheel that sends her down a completely different path. . . . . .and what she eventually discovers is quite shocking.

Another delightful cozy mystery featuring the famed Hatfield siblings, Macy's big dog Coal, and a host of other neighbors and friends.

I loved the setting of the fair for this installment in the Barks & Beans Cafe Cozy Mystery series! With this particular story, I totally did not see the ending coming. I had a few guesses as to who the villain might be, but I was completely wrong. I love that these books are fun, clean, and engaging, and I always enjoy them with my young teenaged daughter. FAIR TRADE by Heather Day Gilbert
The Third Barks and Beans Cafe Mystery

The state fair brings to mind special fried foods, live music, and lots and lots of people. Another draw to this year's fair is Carolina Crush, a hot new country band, whose star grew up in Lewisburg. Reconnecting with her childhood friend, Carolina invites Macy to a private buffet with the band. What's served up is primarily tension and Macy leaves with a bad taste in her mouth. When Carolina becomes sick afterward, yet no one else suffers any ill effects, Macy suspects someone tried to poison her old friend. Who would want the rising star dead? The back up singer? The husband? Or maybe her stalker.

When I think of state fairs I think of fair food, midway rides, and prize winning animals. There's also a somewhat seedy side to fairs, whether it's the transient nature of it, the hucksters, or the glittery nature of everything that seems to quickly fade away. That aura of something unsettling, something not quite right permeates FAIR TRADE. Carolina Crush may be successful, but the undercurrents show that all is not golden.

I enjoy the characters and seeing their developing relationships grow in this third Barks and Beans Cafe mystery. I especially like the addition of Macy's new neighbor, Vera. I was also thrilled to see Waffles make an appearance and am confident someday she will find someone who will appreciate her. I love the fact that the third Barks and Beans Mystery continues to build on a longer story arc with nefarious characters popping up when least expected participating in an ongoing mystery that's slowly being revealed.

FAIR TRADE is a mystery of subtleties. It's quiet, more strategic mystery that looks at trust, memories, and friendships.

FTC Disclosure – The publisher sent me an e-copy of this book in the hopes I would review it.

"I still can't believe that gangly little girl next door turned into such a superstar."

“I only hoped that if someone did engineer that shock in order to kill Carolina, they wouldn't return to finish what they'd started.”

“After all, we Hatfields could be a formidable bunch.”

I loved this book! Definitely my favorite in the series so far. This one was so fast paced and I thoroughly enjoyed the music aspect with the fictitious country band Carolina Crush. The cameo with Tess Spencer, daughter, and mother-in-law made for a special treat and made me wish for that next book in the series to come sooner than later. Every book in the Barks & Beans series lets us know a little bit more about Macy and Bo and the supporting characters so I’m looking forward to book 4. I had an inkling of the culprit in this one but it didn’t take away my enjoyment. And in typical Heather Day Gilbert fashion, she throws in some other surprises with the reveal. Here’s to hoping book 4 is as good as this one!

This third instalment in The Barks & Beans Café Mystery Series sees brother and sister co-owners Bo and Macy Hatfield on location at the West Virginia state fair with a booth for iced coffee, snacks, and a few of the shelter dogs who make up the “barks” side of the name.

This time, Macy reconnects with an old school friend, now a country music star, who’s in town for a couple of concerts at the fair. Macy enjoys the chance to see behind the scenes in the band, but when there’s an attempt on her friend’s life the rest of the band suddenly look like suspects.

The fairground atmosphere took me back to fun childhood memories of rides, food, and exhibits. Favourite line:

It was a curious concoction of popcorn, hot dogs, and caramel, mingled with the very human scent of something I could only describe as undiluted excitement. [Kindle location 719, Macy describing the scent of the fair]

I found the psychology especially interesting in this story, and of course Coal the Great Dane is a treat. I like how he’s always featured on the covers. Waffles the clueless shelter dog is back, as well of course as the likeable siblings and their staff and friends. And there's a surprise cameo appearance by someone fans will recognize from another Heather Day Gilbert series!

Another thing I appreciate about this series is the overarching plot threads that link the books. Not that a reader couldn’t start here and be happy, but continuity-wise it’s better to start at the beginning and watch it all unfold. Each story is complete on its own, but as well as developing relationships there’s the shadowy background villain who keeps inserting himself into Macy’s life.

Fair Trade is a quick, clean cozy mystery that may have you wishing for a chance to take in your own local fair.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy from the Great Escapes Book Tours. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.Fair Trade by Heather Day Gilbert is an excellent cozy mystery that keeps you guessing what was going on.
Can Macy figure out who is trying to kill Carolina?
Macy Hatfield
Macy Hatfield is our main and point of view character. She is an interesting main character, and I have to say that I like her a lot. I felt bad for her about her whole back story and what was happening in this story. Wow, it is quite a doozy. Macy is a great main character and sleuth. She was good at getting most of the clues correct but was putting them to the wrong person, which we occasionally do. Macy knows her flaws, and despite them, she has always tried to do better than before. I think that we would be friends, especially since I wouldn't mind spending time in the barks section.
The Mystery
Fair Trade CRMacy helps out an old childhood friend, Carolina, by figuring out why someone is trying to kill her. Well, it's just one doozy of a thing after another on this one. Many potential suspects, but trying to figure out their motive, is really hard when they don't really want to talk to Macy. So, Macy has her work cut out to solve this mystery. Especially since someone maybe getting hurt, that isn't Carolina? What is happening at this fair?
Five Stars
Fair Trade by Heather Day Gilbert is a great book by this author who is really talented. I am loving this Barks and Beans Cafe Cozy Mystery as it has a lot of different things connecting it that makes it different than other cozies that I have read. Macy goes through a lot to figure everything out. But will the culprit get away scot-free? I am giving this book 5 stars and recommending it to anyone that likes coffee and dogs!

Well that was a different plot twist!
A visit with Macy Hatfield is a visit filled with antics and escapades and unexpected turns. I love her quirky personality, and her inquisitive mind—the one that lands her smack in the middle of trouble.
Ms. Gilbert has created characters who leap off the page and tug the reader right into the story. I could smell the coffee (and sometimes the dogs!) I could hear the yipping and yapping and barking. My heart raced when Macy ran into her old friend-turned-country-music-star, and my heart pounded when Carolina was struck with [SPOILER!]
The more Macy discovers about the attacks on her friend, the more confusing it becomes. But for all her quirky qualities, Macy has staying power and she is determined to help her friend.
Macy could well be a detective but for her whimsical and offbeat methods, which aren’t really methods at all. But she is as clever and diligent as, well, a hound, and her mind is always clicking, piecing together the bits like jigsaw puzzle pieces in a scavenger hunt.
Bo, strong and silent and stoic, is on perpetual stand-by to rescue his sister from the freak situations she has a habit of stumbling into. Their bond is deep, borne of tragedy and secured by love.
And Coal! Well, who wouldn’t love a dog as big as horse! He may be big but he’s a gentle giant, and oh! so protective of Macy.
Ms. Gilbert’s writing is brilliant, her characters real and fun, her stories a delight to read, and I look forward to the next book in this series, Spilled Milk.

Siblings Macy and Bo see the state fair as their chance to “step right up” and boost their one-year-old coffee shop and dog cafe business by setting up a booth in the middle of the festivities. But before they can even take a whirl on the Ferris wheel, life spins out of control when Macy’s old friend, now a famous country singer, arrives to make music but nearly gets murdered instead. After a homicide, a celebrity scandal, and a few too many carnival snacks, the state fair isn’t so great anymore, and Macy and Bo will have to solve the crime before their first year in business becomes their last.

Fair Trade is as tight and eventful as a whodunnit can be while not sacrificing character development. The reader follows the clues right alongside Macy, and just when the answer seems near, a new twist crashes in like an over enthusiastic bumper car. Closing the book before discovering where all the clues finally lead is next to impossible.

Fair Trade can be read as a stand-alone, but it is even more entertaining to continue the journey with the Barks & Beans characters after getting to know them in No Filter and Iced Over. Macy and Bo are winsome and fun, as is their community of baristas and friends—both human and furry.

If you’re the kind of reader who is drawn to great cozy mysteries like a fair-goer is drawn to the smell of fresh funnel cakes, then you will find Fair Trade irresistible.

Fair Trade, the third book in the Barks & Beans Cafe Mystery series, is written by one of my favorite authors, Heather Day Gilbert. Having read and enjoyed the previous two books, I was excited to read Fair Trade and was not disappointed. I love this cozy mystery series. Bo and his sister, Macy, own the Barks & Beans Cafe where one can get a cup of java and a puppy fix at the same time. This particular book gives readers a glimpse of the cafe in a booth at the West Virginia State Fair. While helping out at the booth, Macy encounters a long-ago friend, who immediately involves Macy in a murder mystery. There are lots of action-filled tense moments that keep the pages turning. I love the characters, charming and capable--people one would like for friends. And of course, Coal, the ever-present and vigilant Great Dane...I loved how he always wants to be near and protect Macy. Lots of action, some quirky characters, a murder to solve, and a hint of a romance, what more could a cozy mystery lover ask for. The fourth book in the series can't come too soon for this reader.

I somehow missed reading book 2 Iced Over, so I was glad to be given the chance to read this instalment on the Barks & Bean Cafe cozy mystery series, I loved book one so much!

Fair Trade was a quick read and once again Macy finds herself caught up in not one but two mysteries that are ultimately connected. When her childhood friend and lead singer of Carolina Crush is in area to headline the state fair she reconnects with her and is invited to dinner with the band,  only the band are less than receptive of Macy but she puts it down to "fame" Carolina ends you in the hospital and Macy realised that she has likely been poisoned! I really loved Caroline and hoped upon hope that she wasn't going end up dead, thankful she didn't but another band member does and the twist involving that I did not see coming!

The ever lovable great dale Coal is ever present in this story just like the last as well as few other fluffy additions. I am loving this series and can't wait to read more from the Barks & Bean Cafe.

I really loved the idea of a dog cafe when I first found this series, and now it's become one of my fave series. Macy's Great Dane Coal is such a sweetheart but a good guard dog too. The main setting for this was the West Virginia state fair in August where Barks & Beans was set up as a vendor. Macy felt especially invested in this mystery due to the victim of two near-death experiences being her old friend turned country lead singer, Carolina. When a murder occurred, was Carolina the intended victim...or was someone targeting the whole band?

A lot of things weren't as they seemed as I've come to find out and enjoy about this series. Secrets were kept, and there was a really good twist at the end, and what's come to be sort of a signature surprise but as usual I hadn't seen it coming lol. There's never exactly a cliffhanger but a really interesting ongoing story. I'm anxious for the next book when it comes to KU!

With my packed schedule as a book blogger and reviewer, it’s not often that I get to read one for the pure enjoyment of reading. However, since reading book one in Heather Day Gilbert’s Barks & Beans series, I’ve made a point to get to the other books in the series somewhat near their release date.

Fair Trade is mostly set at the fair, complete with rides, fair food, and plenty of drama for Macy. This one kept me guessing until the end and the culprit came as a surprise to me, which made the book even that much better, in my opinion.

I look forward to spending more time with Macy, Coal, and the group at the café this spring when the next installment arrives. But please, can we get more of Titan McCoy in that book? Pretty please? 😊

I loved this book! I love that she can meet up with her old childhood friend. I hate that she ends up betraying and using her. It's kind of iconic that her old bully was also in town at the same time and how they end up being on okay terms. I hate that the wife and husband are in league together and I hate how dedicated she was to putting up a front. I felt bad when one of the band members was killed and I hate that everyone acted so innocent. I love that they finally figured it out and that nobody was seriously hurt. I love that Bo and Summer finally went out on a date. I hope that Titan and her end up together.

I'm loving this series so much! Each book just gets better, and this is my favorite one yet. I loved the state fair atmosphere. It was so much fun! And I really enjoyed getting a little peek behind the scenes of a country music star. I was also really excited to see Waffles again. I was wondering what she was up to, so it was great watching her wreak more havoc.

This was very fast paced. If I hadn't been having A/C issues, I know I would've finished it in one afternoon. The mystery was a good one. While I had a slight suspicion about what was going on, I was never a hundred percent sure. I can't recommend this series highly enough. I'm starting the next book straightaway. I can't get enough!

A superb read and a great catch up with Macy, Bo, and of course the big dog - Cole. Fingers from the past keep reaching into Bo and Macy current lives, including some new revelations about Auntie A. I eagerly await the next installment.

The twists in the plot of this book were not unlike those you will find on the midway of your local fair! Since we couldn't enjoy the fair this year due to COVID, this book was an extra special treat, bringing back memories of the fun experienced in years past. Once again, Macy and Bo Hatfield give unselfishly of themselves to see that truth and justice prevail in their hometown of Lewisburg, WV.

Another fun mystery in the saga of Bo and Macy.
This is about Macy’s childhood friend Caroline who is a country music star, and it seems as though someone is determined to kill her...
Cozy, charming, and intriguing.
