ASSIGNMENT: PEENEMUNDE: A WWII Novel of Naval Intelligence and Spies

Rate this book
July 1943 – Navy Captain Tony Romella is deployed to Sweden with several Morse and voice radio intercept operators. The mission is to collect signals from the Peenemunde Army Research Center on the northeast tip of Germany. There is a sharp focus on a version of Hitler's harrowing V1 vengeance weapon being developed and tested as an aircraft-launched anti-ship flying bomb. Hitler wants the V1 operational in time to thwart an Allied landing through a massive rocket bombing of ports in southeast England and London. The anti-ship version would be a critical threat to Allied ships poised to deliver troops to French soil. Tony's challenge is to gather technical intelligence urgently needed to develop countermeasures. Unexpected impediments to the mission are military politics, international diplomatic entanglements, zealous Gestapo officers, and thorny technical challenges. These lead to several intriguing branches and twists in the story. There are times when a communications intelligence officer does not lead a quiet life in a secure office. Step into Tony's shoes once more and see how they fit.

Another great addition to this World War II series. With each book, I become more astonished at what our intelligence services were able to do by snatching random radio waves out of the ether. The process was so complicated and then they had to make sense of it all. In this book as in the last one, the political maneuverings will make you gnash your teeth but a few are served their just desserts. I love the way that the author weaves real historical people and events into the plot, even into the relationship between Tony Romella and his wife Petra. One more book to go but I will be sad for this series to be over.

Wonderful book

This whole series has been suberb. One gets better than the last. And the characters are smashing. These books are so well researched they make you believe you are right there. And the twist and turns are great. The build ups in the plot is unmatched. Can't wait for book 6.

I truly enjoyed the latest of the Tony Romella series. The plot moved at a reasonable pace, and the mission required some creative actions by Captain Romella.
