Four years ago, Jon Bennett had executed the six commanders of The Trust and crippled their plan to annihilate six billion people. Jeremiah's Codes were no longer a threat and more importantly his code, The Thirteenth, was no longer a target ... or so he believed.
Unbeknownst to Bennett, his involvement had all been part of a greater plan. He'd served his purpose as a deliberate cog in a wheel manipulated by those closest to him. As the world edges dangerously closer to nuclear war, the truth awaits him in a reality nothing will prepare him for.
Paul was born on the beach of eastern Australia and grew accustomed to the free and easy lifestyle of surfing, lifesaving and chasing his sporting dreams. He enjoyed his schooling years though like most of his mates, hated homework preferring his sport each afternoon often claiming the early night. He did however, knuckle down in the later years of high school and performed diligently to the complete jubilation of his mother and perhaps shock! He graduated and instead of the status quo among his classmates embarking on their university challenges, he discovered a new passion. Bright eyed and hungry for success he couldn’t resist the luring excitement of the Olympics. So the next five years he dedicated his existence to achieving his goal, to become an Olympian and that he did. Seoul became the venue and his dream engulfed him. Sadly like many professional athletes, injury plagued his training sessions into his tenth year of international racing and ultimately, he had to retire. So the dreaded question was asked..."hmmm what now?" He pondered many things but his preferred choice rested with law enforcement. Why? At the time he wasn’t really that sure, just seemed like the best option at the time. He joined the Queensland Police in the autumn of ‘92 and quickly moved into the ranks of Detective followed twelve years later with an unexpected inkling towards criminal intelligence and a transfer to suit. Now he heads up a 12 strong team of intelligence analysts all committed to exposing criminal networks and their wrong doings. Life in law enforcement opened his eyes to the failings of society and the sadness of humanity. He declares his opposition of many things unjust, the ruthless killing of innocence by those with radical beliefs, the slaying of nature for the progress of greed, inadequate or inappropriate punishments and above all, political corruption. He is passionate in his beliefs for a better world, a safer place where everyone obeys the law and no one person declares themselves above it. His dislike of corporate greed and corrupt governments frustrates him and he longs for a day when it no longer exists…but of course his job has turned him cynical! How can that happen when the governments and major corporations feed each other? With all that in mind he set out on an alternate journey, an adventure into the realms of fiction writing though preferring to bend and twist reality into his storylines, taking history and moulding it to suit his creativeness. From the early days of 2010 he unravelled Jeremiah’s Codes and the uprising of a new secret agent hero, Jon Bennett. Dreaming it was him, Paul stepped from the ledge and free-fell into another world, a place he had no standing or authority, the world of literature. Then the words started to flow and acknowledgment came quick and the novel materialised into print. Other than all that, Paul is an avid lover of animals, respect and equality. He strives for excellence in all that he does and questions his own abilities never giving up until the job is done. To become a recognised international author is by far the greatest challenge ever undertaken and he openly declares Olympic selection was child’s play in comparison.
I loved it. It sucked me in from the start just like the first one in this series. Just like Jeremiah's Codes this book was full of twists and turns with plenty of action. I particularly liked the ending and the direction taken. 5 stars
Like his first book this one is of the same high standard. It carries on the story and is full of action, twists and anticipation to turn the page. I loved it and more so because I'm not a huge reader so when I get a good one it's awesome.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The pace kept me wanting to turn the page while the description was plenty to give me good vision of each scene. I do find the writing style quite easy to read and without too much waffle like a lot of authors do to fill space. I am now going to go back and read the first book Jeremiah's Codes. Jeremiah's Codes
‘They knew nothing of his real deadly past.’ A brilliant new novel!
Australian author Paul Gilmour is a gentle dynamo who has been a professional athlete, becoming an Olympian but succumbed to injury forcing retirement from that passion. So not to be stationary he joined the Queensland Police, moved into the rank of Detective, then moved on to a team of intelligence analysts. Paul had first hand exposure to corporate and government corruption which overwhelmed his passion for his beliefs in a better, safer world, free of those who disobey or think themselves above the law, and it is all of this combined physical and psychological experience that encouraged this handsome stalwart young man into turning his concepts to the pen. And we as readers are the better for his chain of life events and decision to commit his philosophy to paper.
Paul’s novel JEREMIAH’S CODES, his debut, is now extended with the sequel CODE 13, and both are hefty volumes that are artistically written and rich in all the aspects that make intrigue/mystery/espionage/apocalyptic expectations/romance novels keep us glued to the story. Somehow he continues to tie all the aspects of known and possible conspiracies into the character of Jon Bennett, an ex-CIA operative who feels oddly similar to Paul Gilmour! That is the kind of personality that takes us through this tale involving terrorism, smarmy corrupt governmental officials, and secrets that seem to warn us of a possible end to the earth.
Using the technique of short chapters, titled by different years and places, makes the story have history and presence, and a foreboding future. Paul secures our attention and curiosity with a dramatic Prologue set in Venezuela, then proceeds to jump to Arkansas in 1955 for a moment, then the UK in 2004, etc, constantly building suspense. The author’s own synopsis offers an outline of the action to come: Jon Bennett had executed the six commanders of The Trust and crippled their plan to annihilate six billion people. Jeremiah’s Codes were no longer the threat and more importantly, his code, the Thirteenth was no longer the target. But unbeknown to him, it had all been part of a greater plan. He’d served his unknowing purpose, a deliberate cog in a wheel manipulated by those closest to him. After reuniting with his love, Nicholette Sponarava, together they find themselves in the secret contract of the United States President to prevent world war III. Their mission? Find the weapon responsible for the mass destruction of a city in northern China and a nuclear missile base in Russia. Most are convinced it was a deliberate nuclear strike while only a small group know the truth. Bennett and Sponarava must reveal that truth and convince the attacks were not a deliberate act of war by the United States. There is no other way to prevent it. With the clock ticking down to a full scale nuclear war they find themselves searching the world leading them to hidden sanctuaries of Nazi war criminals in southern Bolivia and secret military bases in the Nevada desert. Deceit and lies follow them every step of the way but it’s not until the final truth is revealed that Bennett is thrown into the mayhem of reality. Then he ends up with far more than he bargained for! Humanities greatest secret.
For those who consumed JEREMIAH’S CODES, this sequel will more than satisfy. Said before, say again: Most authors just don't write novels with this powerful thrust anymore, but Paul Gilmour does. He is major and he is here to stay. Step up to the plate! Highly Recommended on every level.
Code 13 is a fast-paced action story, with plenty of twists and turns. The characters are loads of fun, and the writing makes it easy to visualise the fights, escapes and explosions.
It picks up where Jeremiah's Codes finished. The back-story and characters are explained well enough that you could read Code 13 alone (but it's definitely worth catching up on Jeremiah's Codes).
