Homework Yuck! is a story of a typical boy not wanting to do his school homework. His reasons, not excuses, addressed the 5 major causes of children not wanting to do homework. Not because they are lazy or don't understand the assignments, but because they are children. Their needs must be considered and a compromise made between the educators and the students.
Jamal had lots of home work he had to do the home work whole day. But he wanted to spend time with his parents. Then he said to his mother that teacher called her to school. He was frightened because he didn't do his home work. Then he solved his home work.
“Homework, YUCK! Is a story about a little boy named Jamal who doesn’t like doing homework. When he brought up the subject to his mom, she had him sit down and tell her everything such as why he is so frustrated with his homework. Then, they went to talk to the teacher, and the mother asked her if she could hear out Jamal as his reasonings were valid for not wanting to complete his homework. The school actually changed its homework policy because of Jamal’s valid reasoning. Although I enjoyed reading this book, it may not be the best for children. They do learn a lesson about communication with teachers and having the courage to defend their actions, but they might also learn that they can get what they want if they communicate, which shouldn’t be a lesson for students. The title is also a very negative connotation of homework, which is part of a student's everyday life, which they shouldn’t see as negative. We also notice that Jamal is the main character. The article “How Picture Books Work” mentions, “But it does so by establishing a hierarchic relationship among the objects depicted: only one of them is important enough to be named by the text, and so require more attention from the viewer.” In this case, Jamal is the only character named, making him the center of attention and the most important one.
This book talks about a boy who don't want to do his homework. I deeply relates to this book because I was just like him when I was younger. All I wanted to do was play and watch TV as soon as I get home. With this book, the author showed a good parenting skills as the mother of the boy asked him "what's wrong?" and the boy didn't hesitate to tell her mom his problem because it seems like they have a good mother-and-son relationship.
The mother didn't yell and her son. Instead, she calmly sat at their table and told him that tomorrow, they are going to school to talk to his teacher. As they talked about the problem, the boy voiced out his side and he said, "If i'm doing homework, I feel like I don't have enough time to spend with my family." and the teacher realized that yes, homework is important but family comes first and it is important to spend time with them as well.
I think this book relates to me so well. I always felt the same way Jamal did about homework and he had the courage to speak up unlike me. His reasons for not doing his homework were valid and important. They needed to be heard and I'm glad his mother and teacher took his comments into consideration. It is important to listen to a child when they are speaking on a problem they are having. Jamal showed us the correct way to do it and with the respect that he gave the teacher and the way he spoke was amazing.
Homework...gross! This book talks about a student named Jamal who is upset about spending all day at school and then going home to do homework. I think this is a great book for elementary students AND teachers. It puts into perspective a young child's mind.
This book is perfect for letting children know that homework is a part of the school. And that if you speak about what you believe in you can change how homework is assigned. This book is perfect for elementary students.
This book showed how communicating your thoughts can be effective. Jamal and his mother worked together to come up with a solution to present to his teacher. He gave his perspective on homework and helped the school form a solution that would allow children more free time at school.
