Depression is such a hard-hitting thing. It is not sadness. It is the cold feeling of not feeling anything. You stare at the ceiling for long, you smile warmly but do not feel the warmth inside of you, you hardly come out of your bed, bath, eat, or simply bask in the glory of light. Darkness becomes your companion, your comfort zone, and you do not want to come out of it. That is depression!

The Lifesaver by Greeshma Manohar is a well-written book on depression that talks about the subject in focus in good depth. The book draws its essence from the meticulous research done by the author as well as her personal experiences. She attempts to subtly put forth the true picture of depression. Alongside this, she makes an honest effort to help her readers come out of depression. And guess what? You need to follow some not-so-difficult steps to set yourself free from depression.

Again, a lot of you might feel that depression cannot be normalized. One cannot just get away with it easily. And that is not something to be considered casually. I would agree with that. However, you can definitely bring some change, a significant one at that, by altering a few things here or there in your life. And with my personal experience, I can certainly vouch for a few tips given in this book. They work, they worked for me. They might (and not, will) work for you too :)

I loved how the author talked about depression. She brilliantly sketched its enormity. I could totally feel the grimness of depression. But that was not all. She went a step ahead and talked about how can we help ourselves. Our healing begins with us. To be honest, all of us fighting our own battles, and let's be practical, we cannot lend a helping hand every time. But we can certainly help ourselves. Let us do that, at least.

The author made us of stories and anecdotes from her life to validate her points. She kept writing to the point which, again, made me like this book thoroughly. This book is like a guide, a friend, a solace. It never sounded preachy instead, its precise narrative followed by actionable tips and activities was a treat. Kudos to the author for writing this book and helping others with her own inspiring story.

Received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review

The Lifesaver by Greeshma Manohar is the best of the books I have read and reviewed this year so far. Thumbs up to this depression survivor to come forward with such an insightful memoir to guide the people suffering from it. Although I was thinking before reading the book what so would be there to read in a depression self help guide? But to be honest the moment I started reading it my interest reached at the peak.
The book opens up with the definition and causes of depression leading to the facts and figures around the globe about the dilemma of its suffering. Ms Greeshma has done a thorough research upon the subject and upon its survivors. She has taken authorised material from the books and the real victims of depression to write about it.
The Lifesaver is really simple to read and comprehend with 157 pages and 26 chapters in it. You must be wondering 26 chapters being too much of it but believe me the way she has handled them is remarkable. I have never been into reading about the depression books as they never go beyond a depressing tell tale heart of the victims with no remedies to look forward to it, but here Ms Greeshma has presented the activities to follow at the end of each chapters for its readers. This was the best thing about the book the reader doesnot act as a passive reader but infact is dwelled into some real life practising stuff to overcome it.
I loved it the way the author has depicted the short scenarios from the real life to elaborate her viewpoint in each chapter. This book is a real self help read at the depression for all the victims and even the healthy ones as well. The book has the positive energy in it being filled up that am sure anybody reading it will end up being a real optimist after the read.
I would recommend it to all to just grab a copy of it and have a read to ease your mind and soul of so much stuff you never knew you have been carrying along in the life. It can not be said that it is only meant for the people suffering with the depression. Infact it is a must read for teenagers, young, adults and old to look at the world and life with an optimist's perspective. I have encountered some typo errors in it otherwise carefully edited and composed professionally. The effort seems genuine on Ms Greeshma's part to aware all of this drastic disease named as "a silent killer". Am sure this book will reward her in many ways in future. I have hardly rated any read as 5 stars yet but this one deserves it. A guide and memoir on the depression to be a must read for all.

I don't think I have clinical #DEPRESSION but definitely like many people of my age or around my age I face few depressive moments in my day to day life.It is nothing pretty but grim. I think if anyone has Depression , they shall read this book that focuses on the actual health issue and it can come handy. I took time to read THE LIFE SAVER by GREESHMA MANOHAR.I feel this needs a shout out.I have observed many of my friends go through depression. Moreover if stomach/heart issue is not a taboo, why is a health issue of the brain one?
________
Sometimes people in depression or any such health issues feel lost.Such books where the author herself shares her own experience, healing process and tips can atleast show them the first ray of light who may feel directionless.

" Hell, within me, the realm of chaos, where devil dances to the beat of my heart.I am trapped inside a bodysuit, laying there as a silent spectator, of my demolition. I only long for the fluttering of the keys, to set me free."⁣

Depression is not just sadness.Author mentions eminent personas from the entertainers to academicians have suffered from it.

It is like an exercise book or a practical guide whose instructions are logical and can be followed which can help get some control over depression and even can shift us towards a healthier mindset and lifestyle.⁣

Author shares her own suffering and what she learnt while in that phase about herself and the changing facets of the world. She has arranged the book very carefully with point wise activity list to practice as a routine.Kept lucid and brief from again becoming mindful by cultivating simple hobbies, jounaling, connecting with nature to gaining control over your losing health by taking correct diet suppliments like Zinc,Magnesium etc, practicing 10/10/10 life saver tips. Also I liked reading the insightful fact section and the science backed points about how depression affects the anatomy of our brain and the hormones.

"Amazing things happen out of your comfort zones."
"When the caterpillar thought the world is over, it turned into a butterfly."

The year 2020, has been the most difficult year globally. COVID-19 has caused depression, anxiety, suicides, divorces, so on and so forth. Suicides!! Way too many suicides. According to WHO, 800,000 people die due to suicide every year, which is one person every 40 seconds. Weird fact, right!

Well, this book doesn't talk about suicide but about one of the major reasons behind it... DEPRESSION. It is the reason behind about one-half of all suicide attempts. This book helps you recover from depression. It is a handbook for people who are undergoing depression and feel the need to commit suicide. This sure is my first self-help on depression but I already feel emotionally connected with the sentiments of the author.

If you have picked this book, you have already won the first battle with depression. The author has undergone the impact of depression, people who are the cause of it, situations that become the reason, and unbearable societal circumstances. That's why while reading this book you would be able to relate to the real-life situations you might be fighting at the moment. The activities in this book help you feel motivated and uplift you through the dark thoughts depression imbibes.

The biggest step to fight depression is to surround yourself with positivity. This book guides you in the process and helps you uplift your mind. I felt the book was really helpful and if this book stops one person from falling into the pits of darkness, then I think it is the biggest success ever achieved.

Thankyou Greeshma!

The Life Saver, can literally be a life saver for a depressed person; and can avoid people from going in depression. Author shared her personal experience in this book, she is a warrior to have fought depression for three years and came out of it. Her depression does one good thing; made her a brilliant writer.

Writer’s effort in précising the book’s title is prominent. She divided the book in 26 chapters, each part was like a tiny step in coming out from the dark tunnel of depression. She presented quotes from famous people, who came out of depression, she included stories to emphasize on her points and most importantly she included 4-5 lines poetry (which was best). Her words were like our favourite dish, which we eat slowly with small bites so it doesn’t finish soon.

The book covers all the aspects, which can lead to weaken a person’s mental health. One can never decide by a person’s action, or appearance whether he/she is in depression or not. Speaking openly about mental health can save many other people; and our country is gradually taking this topic seriously. Also, author provides activities at the end of each chapter; so our negative thoughts won’t stop us from taking a step towards our betterment.

Book accentuated mostly on Self-Love, Self-Care, Proper Diet, Forgiving, Pet Therapy, Sleep, Therapeutic bath, Spirituality etc. Overall, an important read; which sooths mind, raise self-acceptance & esteem the discussion about Mental health. I would recommend it.
