The book starts horribly with the male main character completely objectifying the female main character. It was so gross, I was actually shocked this was written by TWO women. But then they also objectify the male main character, so balance, I guess.
There were so many inconsistencies within the book. Skylar has absolutely always believed in ghosts, but then if you had asked him a month ago he’d say he didn’t. Rebekah’s death was ruled an aneurysm, but then her body was buried in the back yard. (So how could they even know she was dead, let alone do an autopsy? And if her body had been found, it having been buried would have instigated an investigation.) Ellery met Skylar’s mom in the school office because Skylar’s mom was the principal’s assistant, but then they meet at Skylar’s house, and then Skylar’s mom is home in the middle of the school day.
And then there’s the writing. Constantly switching back and forth between present and past tense, even mid-sentence. “In the middle of the night, I awoke from a nightmare that feels so real….” Sooooo many missing words. At one point, the authors used “feels” instead of “fills.”
It was honestly difficult to finish this book. And yeah, I could have DNF’d it, and wanted to a dozen times. But it’s only 100 pages, right? It was 100 pages too long, and I want those two(ish) hours of my life back.
