Breaking Silence

Rate this book
Rucker Sloan thinks all he’s good for is a fighting, killing machine. Long-term relationships are out of the question. Until he meets a nurse who’d risk her life for someone she doesn’t know…

After her mother died of a broken heart, nurse Nora Michaels joined the Army to do something to help others and to escape her sad memories. Deployed to Afghanistan, she hopes she’s making a difference, especially when she treats a cranky wounded soldier who just might be more broken than she is.

When the local orphanage where she volunteers is overrun by Taliban, Nora and the little orphan girls are kidnapped and taken into the hills where they are to be sold to sex traffickers.

They need a miracle to save them.

Rucker and his team receive intel on the location of the nurse and children taken from the orphanage. In an operation to save them, Rucker and Nora are separated from the others and must traverse enemy territory to find their way back to safety. Along the way, they learn to rely on and trust each other, discovering a passion they never expected to find in the harsh hills of a war-torn country.

Breaking Silence by Elle James

1st book in the Delta Force Strong series. Military romantic suspense.

Quick pace. Packed with action and danger. Daring occupations.
Strong, competent heroine. Protective hero.
Forbidden romances are the most captivating? This one is charming and engaging.

Nurse and Officer level Nora is leaving her current post in Afghanistan within a week. Meeting Delta Force Operative Rucker Sloan has her wishing maybe she could stick around a bit longer. But he’s only there for a specific assignment and there are rules against them fraternizing. She decides to just walk away. At least until his team member is in the hospital where he again runs into Nora. From there the chemistry cannot be denied. Danger has then working together and running from an enemy.

I’m looking forward to reading the romances of the rest of this Delta team.

Breaking Silence by Elle James is a fantastic start to a new series (Delta Force Strong Series). Great writing, fun characters, and good plot lines make for an entertaining read. I can't stress enough how well Elle's books are written. She manages to give enough details and action to make things realistic without bogging you down in technical jargon and long drawn out angst. Bang bang bang ..the action just takes off. It's like a whole lifetime of living for a normal person condensed into a few short days. And it works. Rucker, our special forces hero and Nora, our military nurse heroine meet on base in Afghanistan. He is on his way in, and she has a week left there. But they click. One line from their "superstitions" conversation kind of starts the whole story. Rucker:"You asking what could happen? isn't a little thing. That's in-your-face tempting fate." And oh boy, was Rucker right! Kidnapping, explosions, dramatic labor, sex-trafficking, and even orphan rescue just keep rolling one after another:-) But I think the thing I like most with this book is the characters themselves. They ARE both stereotypical but without the "negative" stereotypical typecasting . (bear with me) Rucker is still portrayed in the way I like- hunky, sexy hot, and yes, confidently alpha-without being the take-over macho jerk who has to "save" the helpless heroine. And Nora is strong, kick-ass, self-reliant, and more than able to take care of herself. That doesn't mean they don't need each other, just that they each bring things equally to the table without sacrificing what readers like most in military adventures containing romance. Just an awesome read. Can't wait till Delta Force #2 - Breaking Rules comes out! I received an ARC and had no problem reviewing.

Plot-wise it was interesting and suspenseful, character-wise it was shallow and hollow. I barely cared if they made it out and became more invested in seeing the HVT taken out.
Their basic background information was laid out but ultimately felt like it had no bearing on their actions like it should have. If felt like they were just reacting to the events instead of making decisions independently.
Also there’s is the suggestion of a mole on Base but ultimately nothing comes of it.
It is a shallow and poor version of another story I read that did this concept WAY better (‘Securing Caite’ by Susan Stoker).

recensione a cura del blog “Libri Magnetici" by Meghan

Quattro petali.

Rucker Sloan, Delta Force, is currently stationed in Afghanistan awaiting assignment when he wonders upon a sand volleyball game. As he watches, a pretty Lieutenant catches his eye. They are short a player, so when she asks him to join the game, he gladly accepts. After the game, he asks if she’d like to join him for a cup of coffee. She hesitates, but accepts anyway. There’s something about him that draws her in.

Nora Michaels enlists in the Army after obtaining her nursing degree. Her mom passed away and she really doesn’t have a home, so she decided to enlist in order to help others. What she didn’t count on, was being hit on by ALL the men! When she meets Rucker, she thinks he’ll be like all the rest. When he proves her wrong, she’s immediately drawn to him. She knows he’s a man of his word and would do anything to save his brothers in arms. While in Afghanistan, Nora enjoys volunteering at the orphanage. She doesn’t think children are in her future, but she loves being able to help them. During her time at the orphanage, Nora and the orphans are kidnapped to be sold into trafficking. She knows it’ll take a miracle, but hopes Rucker and his team will be able to save them in time...

LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this story!!! It’s an action-packed, suspenseful romance novel. In a race against the Taliban, Rucker and his team are given incorrect intel, lead into a trap, then assisted by a Taliban defect. Nora is strong, capable, and willing to risk her life to protect the children. I can’t wait for the second novel in this series. An Excellent start to the series! I read a gifted copy and all opinions stated are my own.

The title is accurate in the Strong part as the first book in a new series starts off with a bang. Rucker is part of the Delta force and meets Nora, a nurse who is also an officer, in Afghanistan during a volleyball game where he joins her team to play. He later wants to join her in the mess hall and when told to leave, he does. Nora is surprised that Rucker didn’t argue or try to convince her for him stay seated with her, impressing her and decides to join him at his table....if they decide to act on their attraction it could mean a court martial as fraternization is against the rules but Rucker can’t stay away and Nora seems to attract trouble during her last week on tour there with Rucker coming to her rescue....will they stay alive long enough to break the rules.....
Woot woot a great read with some steam, suspense, some action, danger, and insta love that didn’t feel forced between them. The story flows beautifully with some surprises in allies and the ending with the epilogue...YES !! Can’t wait for the next one !!
*I voluntarily read an advanced copy and expressed my honest opinion*

ARC for honest review with no compensation

Breaking Silence is book 1 in the new Delta Force Strong series by Elle James, well written romantic suspense and what a great start to this new series!

Lt. Nora Michaels and Sergeant Rucker Sloan meet in Afghanistan, she is coming stateside in one week and he is on special ops but fate has more in store for these two than just two ships passing in the night...but because she is an officer and he is enlisted there is to be not fraternization but when she is kidnapped all bets are off.

What happens next will keep you turning the pages...kidnapping, search and rescue, instant attraction, heart pounding suspense, lots of action and so much more.

Rucker Sloan was impressed with Nora Michaels from the moment they met in Afghanistan. He had no idea how long they'd be there but he wanted to get to know her better. Fraternization is frowned upon, but sharing coffee or a meal could be good to get to know one another.

When one of his teammates is injured saving his behind, Rucker stays with him at the hospital. All the tongues start to wag when Nora shows up early for her shift to be sure Rucker's okay. Since Dash's injuries turn out not to be so bad the team would be stay in place until their next mission.

One of the things Nora enjoys about her deployment is going to the nearby orphanage, they do health checks and give vaccines. This trip to the orphanage would be Nora's last since she will be heading back home. Ryker surprises her and is her driver for the day. Only they never make it to the orphanage. They are taken at gun point to do something a bit unusual that becomes complicated.

Delivering a breech baby is difficult under any circumstances outside of a hospital, but Nora with Ryker's help pulls it off. Much to their relief they would be allowed to return to base.

In spite of what happened Nora is determined to go to the orphanage to visit with the children and give the vaccines. It was her chance to say good-bye. Unfortunately things go sideways again, and her helping Pazir just might be a saving grace.

Rucker isn't able to accompany her and when the news reaches him he does what he has to do. There's no way his team isn't going to help him find her and get her to safety.

Nora and Rucker have much to consider especially since she'll be heading back to the states. One thing for certain they want to stay in touch and see what happens.

Plenty of action, flirting and a touch of sizzle.

I'm behind on this series so I have some catching up to do.

Breaking Silence: Delta Force Strong Book 1 is by Elle James. This is a great book to start a new series. As it deals with the military and others in Afghanistan, it gives a little insight into how things were working there during the war. It shows how the Afghans had to make unfavorable choices just to keep their families alive and relatively safe.
Rucker Sloan was headed to get something to eat after his mission when he came upon a group playing volleyball. One of the players in particular grabbed his attention. Not only was she beautiful, she could play volleyball. She asked him if he would like to fill out their team and he agreed. Afterwards, he learned she was a nurse and an officer. Being an officer meant any fraternizing between the two of them could mean a court-martial. After she showed him where the mess was, he was interrupted by being summoned to his officer’s office. Here, he found that he and his team were being sent on a mission.
Nora set out to visit the orphanage where they gave free shots to help the children. She also went to tell them bye as she was leaving Afghanistan the next morning. When it came time to leave, she went back to get her stethoscope and ended up being kidnapped along with all the orphan girls. They were to be sold into sex-slavery.
Rucker and his team were sent to find them. Would they be able to find them given that it had been some time since they were taken? Could Nora do anything to save the girls?

I love to read about our military heros and what it takes for them to be able to do their jobs but at what cost to their personnel lives? Some marry and divorce, some stay single so that they don't ruin 2 lives by falling for someone who won't understand their sacrifice but some are lucky and can find the kind of women that either know about the military life because they are a part of it or they grew up with it or they are just that kind of person who can handle the unknown that these soldiers are forced to live with, what they see, what they do and where they've been. Secrets are hard to live with on both sides.

In this setting with both of you being in the military do you have the strength to go after who you want even knowing that one is an officer and one is enlisted and being deployed that is not tolerated and you both could lose you jobs. Will love win out or will they be able to stay the course to protect their jobs? What if the team finds out, what if the CO finds out, your coworkers? Will they tell and lead you down that path? What happens when you go home? Will it be to different parts of the country or close together? Grab the book to find out.

I loved the book and know that the series will be great and I would like to recommend it to new readers and all of Elle's faithful followers. You won't be disappointed.

I have come to truly enjoy the stories written by this talented author and this one exceeded my expectations.
This first book in the new series titled Delta Force Strong is one that will keep you on the edge of your seat from the first page to the last.
Lt Nora MIchaels is a nurse in Afghanistan , who will be leaving the country in a few days and return to the USA. Sgt Rucker Sloan is a Delta Force member who is in Afghanistan on assignment. The moment these two meet the attraction is incredible, but she outranks him and fraternizing could cause a court martial.
But all bets are off when Nora is kidnapped with a group of orphans.
Will Rucker and his men save them all or will they lose the battle trying?
The engaging plot is filled with bad guys, hunky good ones, a reminder of the devastation of war and it’s consequences, and the reality of human trafficking.
You will fall in love with the characters, main and secondary ones. I also appreciate the fact that the author gives us strong women who can stand up to the men they love.
I can’t wait for the next book in the series.
Definitely this is another winner for the author.
I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.

A Good Start to a New Series!

It's been too long since I've read a new book by Elle James. These days I'm reading mostly MM romance but when I found out she was starting a new series I wanted to get in on the ground floor.

The story grabbed hold of me right from the beginning and pretty much didn't let go. Some elements were predictable but that is fine with me from time-to-time. Sometimes I just want to relax with a story that I know what I'm getting. Elle's romantic suspense books are always entertaining and keep me engaged from start to finish.

I felt the connection between Rucker and Nora and enjoyed watching their relationship develop under such adverse conditions. I also enjoyed the comradery between Rucker and the rest of his team members. The epilogue brought a couple of surprises that I hadn't expected and I loved getting a glimpse of Rucker and Nora a few months later in their relationship.

Since this is the beginning of a series, I know we will be reading more about the individual team members. In fact, Dash's story is coming up next in Breaking Rules and I'm looking forward to reading it.

An advanced copy of this book was provided to me but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.

This is the first book in a new series and it has all of Elle's hallmarks silent tough alpha operator and the strong woman he loves Danger suspense and intrigue and a pace that has you turning pages as fast as you can. Like all her works it is a guaranteed great read

Delta Force Operative Rucker Sloan knows he isn't good for anything except what the army uses him for to take out the bad guys but when he and his team arrive for their latest assignment in Afghanistan he meets a leggy volleyball player that makes him wish for more. They aren't destined to be though he is enlisted and Lt Nora Michaels is a officer and she is about to post back home while he is just starting his posting which could be anything from a week to six months. The attraction is there between them is hot but they know they can't act on it. Then Nora and the girls she was immunising are stolen to be sold to the sex trade and Rucker will do whatever it takes to keep her safe luckily a good turn they did together will pay them back and he manages to save her. How will they handle the separation and the can they find a way around the military rules You will have to read to see

This is the first book in the Delta Force Strong series. It is a military story takes place in Afghanistan. Rucker and his team have just arrived on a mission. Lt. Nora Michaels is a nurse. She’s playing volleyball when Rucker walks by and notices her. The ball rolls his way and she asks him to helps her side bec they are short a player. They end up getting coffee together afterwards. She is an officer and he’s enlisted so any romance is off limits. This doesn’t stop them from thinking about each other. As circumstance has it, they end up around each other a few times. Rucker volunteers to be the driver on her medical trip to the orphanage. They end up delivering a baby to a Taliban couple. This couple later helps save them when Nora and some girls are kidnapped by the Taliban leader. Rucker and Nora become close as they try to stay alive.
The story is action packed. I like the Delta force team and their connection. This is a standalone with a HEA. The ending will make you smile! This story is a great start to the series. I can’t wait to read book 2 and see what’s in store for the team.

The couple: Rucker and Nora

Romance trope: military
Series: Delta Force Strong
Length: 196 pages

Plot: Rucker is an enlisted Delta Force soldier in Afghanistan, and Nora is a nurse and officer at the same outpost. They meet just a short time before she is to leave for the States, but a relationship would be forbidden anyways because of their ranks. But Rucker finds ways to be assigned as her detail around his own assignments until she is kidnapped. He, along with some of his team, goes on a dangerous mission to rescue her, but it's necessary, as she has already stolen his heart.

Commentary: Rucker and Nora were cute together, and I liked the volleyball scene at the beginning (throwback to the original Top Gun!). Nora was sweet - almost too sweet to be where she was! That made me wonder about the training that nurses and doctors receive when they're going into combat or combat-adjacent situations. They have to go through basic training, but what more do they get after that? I'm going to look that up; I like it when a book makes me think about something beyond the reading.

Next book in the series: Breaking Rules

WOW!
I started this book in the morning and, did not put it down until it ended later that day!!!
What an amazing story that pulls you in from the first page and doesn't let you off that roller coaster ride 'til the end!
Lt. Nora Michaels is an RN on assignment in Afghanistan for another week until her rotation ends and, she returns to the states. While having coffee, she meets Sargent Rucker Sloan, a Delta Force officer who always avoided relationships because he knows they don't work well with men like him.
That is, until he has coffee with this amazing woman!!
The attraction is instantaneous and, sizzling but, both know that it could also get them kicked out of the armed forces because fraternization is not tolerated between officers and, soldiers. These two do everything they can to control the heat until Nora and her orphans are kidnapped by the Taliban.
That's when everything is thrown out the window and, the really important stuff is all that matters!!!
DO NOT MISS THIS READ!!!!!

Elle James has introduced a new Delta Force team, and, if this is an indication of the men on that team – wow are we in for a ride! This book ticks so many boxes – a good storyline, great characters (really empathetically written), heat (oh yes, heat!), and a glimpse at the other team members that will make their appearances in the books to come. Nora is a week off returning to the States, and, as an officer, she should not be spending time with Rucker – but an injury to his teammate means they see more of each other than they would otherwise have done – and they end up together when she is kidnapped. That kidnapping is crucial to the story, and there is danger, drama, and gritty determination as they fight to stay alive and secure all concerned (no spoilers here!). It could have been longer, but I’m greedy – it is definitely a book to read in a sitting because you are always slightly on the edge of your seat. I look forward to the rest of the series.

I received a free copy of this book. This review was posted voluntarily.

Rucker Sloan is just off a mission and back on base in Afghanistan where he meets Nora, a nurse, who asks him to join in on a friendly game of volleyball. Neither is looking for a relationship but there is just something about Rucker that draws Nora to him. She is used to getting hit on but Rucker is different from what she has experienced before. The problem is that he is enlisted and she is an officer and she follows the no fraternizing rule seriously, besides she has only a week or so left before she is sent back home. What could go wrong?

There is a lot of action in this book and a few miracles thrown into the mix. I couldn't put this story down and Rucker and his teammates are characters that I want to read more about. Nora is a strong heroine who doesn't sit around waiting for a knight in shining armor to save her and the orphans that were taken. She springs into action and doesn't what she needs to do. I enjoy reading about strong heroes but also strong heroines who don't necessarily need a man to save them.

I receive a free copy of the mildly steamy military novel Breaking Silence: Delta Force Strong Book #1 by Elle James and this review was given freely.
This instant attraction at first sight romance between an officer and an enlisted man is easy flowing and suspenseful, full of action and drama, contains some violence, has mission scenes gone wrong, contains an excellent introduction to Rucker's Delta Force team and ends happily.
Former LA native now Delta Force Army operative and college business major, Sergeant Rucker Sloan dreams of starting his own security business and riding dirt bikes until he deploys to Afghanistan to contain and stop human trafficker and Taliban leader Abdul Akund only to find himself captivated by the blond volleyball player and Army nurse,Lieutenant Nora Michaels.

OMG!! What an awesome start to a new series! Breaking Silence is an outstanding romantic suspense by Elle James. Ms. James impressed me again with her fabulous story-telling abilities with this well-written book. I totally love her characters in this story. Rucker is Delta Force and meets Army Lieutenant Nora Michaels while on a mission in Afghanistan. Rucker and Nora's story is packed with edge of your seat action and suspense, humor, drama and sizzle. Breaking Silence captured my attention on page 1 and held me hostage until the end. I loved reading this book and look forward to my next book by Elle James. Breaking Silence is book 1 of the Delta Force Strong Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from Bookfunnel. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This was a sweet, military romance that I received for free through BookFunnel. Contrary to what I usually read, I enjoy a sweet romance once in a while. But I like them with a bit more character development than this. Nora and Rucker were one dimensional, without any depth to them. Even when they were speaking to each other about their pasts, they didn't delve any deeper than their parents. I was disappointed in that. The action in the book kept me interested, and of course it had an overly gooey happy ending (and really that's what I expected from this story). My only thought is that the author needs to tell the story with emotion. The story read like it was something that was being recited. Only in a few places did true emotion come out. So along with character depth, some story depth would have been appreciated.

Overall Amanda rating: C
So, I was really hoping that this book would be as good as a book written by Susan Stoker. I was incorrect. Was the book good? Yes, I guess. I did finish the book so that in itself means that it was not horrid. I just found the book lacking. Maybe the storyline, maybe the characters, I am not sure. I just feel like it could be better. OK so I feel like I have already read a better version of the book, I think that is the problem.
Rucker: Average male alpha. Falls for a girl, hopelessly.
Nora: Again, I feel like I have read this character before.
So, I think the book could have had a more complete ending, it felt like the climax happened so very quickly, and then boom, the end. I think it is like reading a children's book that your child has ripped out several pages.

Breaking Silence- Delta Force 1

This was a great start for the Delta Force series with Rucker, of Delta Force falling for a nurse,Nora, on assignment at the same base they were sent. She was due to leave in a week but something drew them together even though it was forbidden because she is an officer. As the story progresses their paths kept crossing and he was sent to save her and some orphans that were kidnapped by human traffickers. This was an exciting story as Rucker and the Delta Team saved them and Rucker and Nora fell in love despite the consequences. They got their happily ever after when they went stateside and overcame several obstacles to do so. I highly recommend this book and cannot wait to read the next release in the series.
