The cathedrals, monasteries, castles and palaces of the Duero River region of Castille and Leon embody the essence of Spain. Robert White explores the Duero region’s rich Romanesque, Muslim and Gothic legacies. In the process he provides a unique guide to historic and cultural sights, set amid wondrous natural beauty. This extensively illustrated book will dazzle both the discerning traveler and the general reader interested in Spain’s history and culture.
Although I am in the first part of the book, I perused it to learn about different off-the-beaten-path towns in the Upper Duero that I want to visit. While dated, some of the places the author describes are probably little changed in this very traditional part of Castilla y León.
Now that I have finished this book, I have additional appreciation for the depth of study that went into it. If you want to see the "real Spain" beyond the beach resorts and great cities, follow the author's path through the Upper Duero and be amazed and in many places, be amazed by yourself, since crowds are in short supply. This book fun to read as an armchair travel to an interesting part of the world
