The thin thread holding the civilized world together has been severed.
A ranch on the outskirts of a city becomes the sanctuary for a family during the unfolding crisis of an EMP. The nation's power grid has failed. Hundreds of millions are left without basic utilities, and the enemy responsible for the EMP's detonation now wreaks havoc throughout the countryside.
I did enjoy this but I really struggled with some of the options of the main characters, but I suppose it helped the plot. Then I wondered why they hadnt fortified the ranch before. Oh well - perhaps have listened to too many EMP books.
For the most part this was a decent book and I like most of the characters and how they worked together. There were some editing issues with awkward phrases and punctuation. Phil and Wyatt have clearly never seen shows like "The Walking Dead" or read many post-apocalyptic novels, or they would have known to not have let Jackson survive the encounter in the pharmacy. After the harrowing escape from the city, the story suddenly jumps a month and we miss a lot of potential action. They were concerned about unwanted persons who might come to the ranch, but not until they know there will an attack do they start to plan to set some traps and tripwires-why did they not already do this? After a pitched battle and a stand-off between Jackson (yep they come back don't they) and Phil, the action jumps to the group that had fled the ranch. Took a climatic scene and kind of let the air out of it. Nevertheless, I mostly enjoyed this and if there is another book, would read it to see how the group fares.
I like this book quite a bit, great action, few grammatical errors, a good plot. Was written almost as if I was watching a movie… matter fact, I could picture of the scenes as a movie. One small thing that bothers me is that in the beginning, The author talks about a small restored plane that Phil has on the ranch, but it never comes up in the story again. So why mention it? I read this book as a combination of print and audiobook, so maybe while, listening to the audio portion, I misunderstood. Anyway, I liked the characters, I loved the action, I loved the settings. One of the best books of the series.
Phil owns and lives on a large ranch along with his wife Alice, son David. Alice and David are in the city (what city is unclear) when the EMP hits. Phil and Wyatt (His childhood friend and ranch foreman) make to the city to rescue Alice and David. During their travel they encounter true evil men who want nothing but destruction. One lesson to learn, if the opportunity comes kill the psychopath before before he has a chance to rise.
Another one that I truly enjoyed. I haven't found and emp books that didn't like. I don't know who picked which books to be included but all are written by authors that researched their books well and put a lot of thought into each sentence. Mr. Walker described everything so well that I come see the sandbags and bullets clearly. I wanted to call out "duck" so many times that I would have scared my dog to death! Very well written and recommended.
Only one issue. In a situation where a dangerous foe is seriously injured, just kill him. I mean really? At the end of civilization there will be enough dangerous, evil people to step up and become a major problem for our Main character. Thinkaboutit. Enjoyable reading though.
Really enjoyed this book, I think I hoping for more of the ranch lifestyle instead of farming, but it was still very well written and exciting! Loved the ending!
There are many books out there about EMP and what happens after. This one is very different. The writer took the time to build a great story complete with motorcycle gangs and some very determined folks. But there can only be one winner.
Never be unprepared! I actually know people like depicted in this story...I guess both the good AND the bad guys. Lots of speculation about what caused the EMP, but it doesn’t get resolved in my opinion. Good action, lots of weaponry detail.
I thought this was a really great book. The story is very well written and pulls you in. From the start I was hooked and couldn’t put the book down. I would highly recommend reading.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I could not put the book down. Reading it was my break from housework. Honestly it was my reward. I thoroughly loved the heroic efforts of the main characters. Will look forward to reading more from this author.
This was a good survivalist story. The plot was well thought out. The characters were well developed. There are people to root for - and against. This was a a peek into what could happen if an EMP hits!
Full of action. Started out good, then kept getting better and better. What a battle! Great ending. I stayed up all night after deciding to just read a few chapters.
This book was very good start to finish. The characters were very believable and it was very said to see the deaths of the characters you liked. Would recommend this book
This is a very exciting book to read and unfortunately could be a true event in the future. Started and finished the book in one sitting, it was THAT Good!
