A renowned chef and physician shares her secrets to a healthy life in this cookbook filled with healthy recipes that will fuel and energize your body and mind.
"I like to think of a spicebox as the cook's equivalent of a doctor's bag--containing the essential tools to use in the art of cooking. Learning to use spices is the best way to add interest and vibrancy to simple home cooking." —from the Introduction
In her first cookbook, chef and physician Linda Shiue puts the phrase "let food be thy medicine" to the test. With 175 vegetarian and pescatarian recipes curated from her own kitchen, Dr. Shiue takes you on a journey of vibrant, fresh flavors through a range of spices from amchar masala to za'atar. With a comprehensive "Healthy Cooking 101" chapter, lists of the healthiest ingredients out there, and tips for prevention, Spicebox Kitchen is a culinary wellness trip you can take in your own kitchen.
I cook a lot, and sometimes it gets to the point where I’m sick of everything I know how to cook and sick of searching Pinterest for ideas.
This book arrived right when I was going through that and got me excited to cook again. It’s ‘vegetable-forward recipes’ are just what I look for as we eat mostly vegetarian.
I loved that the recipes are divided into sections - California - Asia - Mediterranean & The Middle East - Trinidad
Each section is then split into - Breakfast - Salads, Soups, Starters - Sides - Mains - Desserts & Sweet Things - Pantry: Sauces, Pickles, and snacks
I decided to start off with recipes where I already had most of the ingredients on hand. So far we have tried the Lemony Farro Salad, Lentil Soup, Whole Wheat Scallion Pancakes, and Shakshuka - and all have been a hit with the family.
There are so many more recipes I plan to try but I’m most excited about the Trinidad section as that’s where my parents are from. While some of the recipes are things I already make, I’m dying to try the Coconut Bake which I remember my grandmother making, she would give me a tiny piece of the dough to make my own mini bake just for me ☺️
Basically what I’m saying is that if you enjoy cooking you should get your hands on this recipe book ☺️
Thank you so much @hachettebooks @hachettego and @spiceboxtravels for this recipe book, I really love it!
Great recipes. Wonderful photos, which is always something I enjoy in cookbooks. I like how the book is laid out giving information about health benefits of certain ingredients. Each recipe also has a short bit about the recipes origin. A wide variety of tasty new recipes to try!
This is a great recipe book that highlights the use of regional spices in producing tasty dishes. The book is veggie forward, meaning meat takes a back seat but is present in some recipes. The authoress is a MD and accomplished chef and so there is a strong nutritional and health emphasis on foods. The book covers Asian spices, California spices, Chinese and Filapino, mediterranean, and jamaican menu and dishes. Well worth reading
I really wanted to like this book and try its approach to eating healthy but I found many of the recipes too spicy for myself and my family or I lacked the necessary ingredients and couldn't justify buying them . Ok but not what I expected. I wanted some recipes for pasta but none found in the book.
Dr. Shiue provides a nice section on different foods and their health benefits, then follows it up with recipes that reflect Asian, Mediterranean and Trinidid diets.
