When Opal Sharp finds herself and her younger siblings suddenly orphaned and destitute, she thinks things can get no worse.
But soon three of them - including Opal - are struck down with the illness that took their father from them, and her brother Charlie is forced to make an impossible decision. Unable to afford a doctor, he knows the younger children will not survive. So, unbeknownst to Opal, Charlie takes their younger siblings to the workhouse, where he knows they will at least be fed and have a roof over their heads.
Opal is heartbroken and struggles to forgive him. Charlie, in turn, takes bigger and bigger risks to try to support what's left of the Sharp family and earn Opal's forgiveness - but he takes it too far and finds himself in trouble with the law. Soon, he is sent on a convict ship to Australia.
As poor Opal is forced to say goodbye to the final member of her family, she makes a promise to reunite them all one day.
Before becoming a writer, I was a Placement Support Worker and foster carer, and worked in the social services department after completing a teacher training course. Many children have joined my family over the years. I still live in Nuneaton, where many of my books are set, with my husband, Trevor, and our beloved dogs.
I was thrilled to discover that I'd become one of the top 250 most-borrowed library authors in the UK, and would like to thank all of you who have taken out my books over the last few years! I love meeting my readers and am always pleased to hear from you. I hope you will all continue to get in touch and please do sign up for my newsletter!
Three and half stars When Opal Sharp and her two brothers and sister are orphaned and destitute, Opal thinks things can never get any worse. But she is wrong. For not long after when Opal falls sick along with one of the younger siblings, Charlie feels there is no option but to surrender the young ones to the workhouse, where they will receive medical attention. Opal is distraught. Charlie and Opal plan to get the young ones back one day. But plans have a way of not working out. To make matters worse, Charlie and Opal end up separated and living lives neither of them expected. Charlie in Australia, after being sent over as a convict, and Opal in England. Will they ever meet up or be forever separated? Will they ever find out out what happened to their younger brother and sister? An enjoyable read with well drawn characters. Interesting enough to keep me reading and yet without feeling emotionally involved with the characters. But I always wanted to know what happened to them. Does tend to get a bit too predictable at times and too neat towards the end, but still a good read that I have no doubt will appeal to many readers. This is my first book by this author and she has written plenty, so scope for me to try another one by her. I’d recommend this entertaining read.
It’s only fairly recently that I discovered just how fabulous an author Rosie Goodwin really is. I haven’t caught up with everything that she has written but I am slowly but surely getting there. I read the synopsis for ‘The Winter Promise’ and it certainly sounded like I was in for a treat. I was spot on too because I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘The Winter Promise’ but more about that in a bit. I absolutely adored the main character of Opal Sharp and I warmed to her from the start. She is a lass trying to do her best in a bad situation and life certainly is difficult for her. She looks after her siblings after the death of their parents. I won’t go too far into what happens but needless to say that she is put through the mill somewhat. She comes across some individuals who claim to be looking out for her when they don’t. There was one character in particular that I wanted to go and slap silly with a house brick. When you read the book for yourselves it won’t be difficult for you to figure out who I mean. The family is split up and I kept everything crossed that over time they would find their way back to each other and reunite. What happens? Well for the answers to that question and so much more you are just going to have to read the book for yourselves to find out as I am not going to tell you. It didn’t take me long at all to get into this story. In fact the synopsis was enough to reel me in and I soon became addicted to this story. I made the fatal mistake of starting to read this book shortly before I went to bed. Let’s just say that I read into the wee small hours of the morning and I had a ‘lack of sleep’ hangover the following morning. This book was constantly on my mind. If I wasn’t reading this book, I was thinking about this book. If I had to put the book down for any reason then I would immediately look forward to being able to pick the book up again. I would pick the book up only intending to read a couple of chapters but I would become so wrapped up in the story that I would lose all track of time and I would read way more than any couple of chapters. I seemed to race my way through this book at a rate of knots. I cared about the characters and I had a need to know what happened so I just kept on reading. It was easy to become emotionally involved in ‘The Winter Promise’. Whilst reading this book, I went through every emotion possible. I wanted to jump inside the pages of the book to sort out certain characters and give them a piece of my mind. ‘The Winter Promise’ is superbly written. Rosie certainly knows how to combine the heartbreaking with the heartwarming. Rosie creates such likeable characters and describes them so vividly and so realistically that the characters seem just as real as you and I. I found myself becoming all protective towards Opal and her family. The pace of this book was spot on. The story hit the ground running and maintained a fairly fast pace throughout. I felt as though I was part of the story and that’s all thanks to Rosie’s very vivid and realistic storytelling. I was gripped by this story from start to finish and I was on the edge of my seat throughout. In short, I thoroughly enjoyed ‘The Winter Promise’ and I would definitely recommend this book to other readers. I will most definitely be reading more of Rosie’s work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.
Rosie, what another brilliant book. Thank you for enabling me to escape the mundane world into your imagination. I feel a close connection to all of your books as I'm born and bred in Coventry so only a stone's throw away from the places you describe. My favourite author by far.
Klausījos kā audiogrāmatu un tas bija tik A I Z R A U J O Š I!
19.gs. Anglija.
After the mixed bag of the days of the week series, it's onto a new series, similar to days of the week in that each story stands on it's own and I'm sure there will be a few overlapping characters. Reverend Lockett from the last series made a brief appearance. The story begins as the four orphaned Sharp children are literally thrown out in the cold following the death of their parents. The two youngest, two year old Jack and six year old Susie are already I'll with the fever that took their parents. They trudge through a raging blizzard until they find shelter in a run down cottage. The two older children Opal who is either 16 or 17 and Charlie 14 or 15, try to make a life in the old cottage, but Opal becomes ill too. Desperate Charlie drops the two youngest at the workhouse. When Opal recovers and they go to get them back they are told Jack has died and Susie adopted. Trying to make ends meet Charlie turns to stealing, which troubles him. Then he is caught not stealing but trying to return a wallet and shipped off to Australia. Opal is devastated, the magistrate who charged Charlie, Henry sets his sights on Opal as his next wife and gets his mother to take her on as a companion. From here the story branches out into three narratives told from each of the surviving Sharp children's perspective. Susie treated as a live doll by her spoiled air head mother, lives in fear of her cruel nanny and longs to find her siblings again. Charlie brutally abused on the convict ship lands on his feet when the ship's captain intervenes after a harsh punishment and soon finds himself working for the governor in charge of prisoner. Opal has it the toughest it seems, for while at first she enjoys her life with the spunky Mrs. King, her son the lying, creepy and well basically evil Henry has taken a shine to her and uses every manipulation tactic he can to get her to marry him. While they each face hardship Opal's story was tough to read at times. The triple narrative kept the pages turning as you had to find out what happens next and it was sometimes two or three chapters before you did. I wish it had been written that way throughout, one chapter Opal, the next Charlie, then Susie all the way through it does sometimes but not always and frankly I needed a break from Opal and the constant troubles and was a little disappointed that we couldn't see Susie tending to her mother while she was sick despite the way she treated her. In the end though it all works out for them. I cried a little at the ending, but I am feeling super emotional these days. It was a great start to the series, different from the days of the week, having all three Sharp children as main characters made it easier to read and harder to put down. It did drag a bit toward the end, but not too much. Hopefully this series will continue to be as good or get even better and not have that rotten ending that days of the week did.
So enjoyed this book, I never like to disclose anymore than stipulated by book, but I would recommend this book, so pleased that it contained epilogue, so you know exactly what happened and to whom!!!!
Just love Rosie Goodwin and know whichever book she publishes will be a hit and this one was no exception read it from beginning to end in 3 sittings. A really enjoyable read and I would highly recommend.
Rosie goodwin has done it again, she manages to take the reader on such an emotional jouney that its hard to put the book down . Great read highly recommend it
Já to miluji!
I rate this book as a 4.5 as it was overall a decent story but could have done with a bit of editing 3/4 the way through. The book is about four children who became orphans after parents died and they were pushed out. Spoilers below. Each child had their own circumstances with two going to a workhouse, one exploited by an evil man who takes her under his wing, and one made out to be a thief by the evil men and transported. The story has a happy ending.
A lovely heart warming story in a Catherine Cookson style. The four Sharp children are turned out of their family cottage on the death of their parents. The two youngest are taken to the workhouse and Opal and Charlie struggle on to find a way to live. The difficulties they face mean they are all separated but Opal, the older sibling, longs for them all to be together again. Another good book from this author.
Opal is doing her best to keep her little family together but there are rough times ahead and with the best will in the world it doesn’t go easy for Opal and her young siblings. Tragedy strikes and fateful decisions have to made if they are all going to survive.
Opal is granted a piece of luck when she is offered the role of female companion to the wealthy Mrs King, a rather formidable character, who does her best to shape Orla for a very different role in society but Opal never forgets her young siblings and wonders what has happened to them all.
This is a lovely story with a delightful heroine who has more than enough angst in her life and yet her fortitude and resilience shines through some rather dark moments in the story. I enjoy how the author lets us know what was going on in the lives of Opal’s siblings so although she herself has lost track of them we, the reader, are privileged to know more than Opal.
All the stands start to come together in a story which warms the heart whilst at the same time tugs away at the heartstrings. I so wanted life to be kind to all of the siblings and all credit to the author for giving us such light and shade, elements of joy combined with moments of great sorrow. The author writes with such consideration for her characters that it is easy to picture them in the scenes which she so lovingly recreates. I am sure that fans of the author’s historical sagas will be delighted with this latest offering.
The Winter Promise is the first in a new themed series of historical sagas by this gifted author and if this first book is anything to go by I am sure that the series is going to be just wonderful. I can’t wait to read more...
Yet another amazing book written by Rosie, this is the first in the new Precious Stones series. The main character is called Opal who doesn't have the easiest or happiest of lives but carries on and makes the best of what she has. I hope book 2 is just as good, if so, it'll be another excellent series.
Absolutely fantastic. I am a huge Rosie goodwins fan and this certainly did not disappoint. This is the first of her new series- can’t wait for the others 😊
I will hold my hands up and confess that this is the first book I have ever read by Rosie Goodwin. This isn’t a genre I usually read but there was something about the write up that pulled at me and the cover is beautiful. My heart really broke for the Sharp children, so much pressure put on too young shoulders, no child should have to go through what these children did….. yes I know it’s just a book but Rosie really had my heart strings, especially with poor Charlie. Although his decisions early on got him in bother I really enjoyed his chapters in the book. Always looking out for his siblings had me warming to him instantly, I felt so sorry for him at the start of the book, not wanting to give much away, I felt that Opal was harsh with him and the decision he had to make regarding his younger brother and sister. I’m pretty sure had the decision been Opal’s to make then she would have taken the same path. Opal is thrown a life line by Mr Harry King, brought into his mother’s home as her companion. I loved his mother’s character, seeing things for what they are (especially her son) I enjoyed her and Opal’s interactions. Mr King on the other hand, tut tut! Many a time I wanted to see him on that ship with poor Charlie, or even better, them exchange places!! This is a whopper of a book, one that will have you turning those pages way into the night and craving more once you HAVE to put it down. A truly heartwarming yet heartbreaking book all at the same time.
From the very first page I fell I love with this wonderful family. I cried when there parents died and then to get thrown out of their home. I don't want to tell you to much. Enjoy this fantastic book. Thank you Rosie Goodwin
1850 Fennydrayton Nuneaton and the Sharp family are now orphaned. Charlie Opal Susie and Jack, the cottage they lived in was tied to the farm and the fever has taking their father and they are turned out and end up living in Rapper's Hole a dwelling and Opal, Susie and Jack are now struck down with the fever, Charlie has no choice but to put the two little ones into the workhouse, that leaves Opal devastated, she tries to see them but is told of Jacks death and Susie has been adopted , Charlie goes looking for work but after getting into trouble over no fault of his own he is sent onto a convict ship to Australia, leaving Opal all alone, taking in by Winifred Mr Henry Kings mother as a companion . This book takes us through what happens to the brother and sisters lives but mainly focus on Opal and the heartbreaks in life that is ahead for her will she ever see her family again? it has me in tears throughout, and masters all the heartache that will touch you. the book is simply perfection from the author that her readers are going to love. this is the first book in the Precious Stones series, and the Winter promise, and I look forward to reader a lot more ahead. its a keeper in it's own rights, so beautiful to read that I will highly recommend as a must read.
So emotional and heartfelt. An utter rollercoaster of emotion. One of the best she's ever written. I like the fact that we had multiple points of view on this one and how it all tied together at the end. You felt every emotion with the characters in this book. I truly adored it.
My sister recommend this author to me , this is the first of her books I read & wow I really loved it , I thought the story was fantastic I literally could not leave my kindle down. Its one of the best books I've ever read. I will be definatly be downloading more of Rosies books .
Oh I really wish that goodreads would extend the amount of stars you can give a book, this one really deserves more than five. Love all of Rosie's books but this one was amazing loved it from start to finish.
Absolutely loved this book. I truly couldn't put it down. Lots of hardships but also tender moments, had me frustrated, laughing and crying. Such a wonderful story. Thank you Rosie, can't wait for your next book to come out. I have Pearl already ordered. Now read everything you have written.
Really good read. Everything I like in a book. Couldn't put it down. Was sorry when I came to the end. Love Rosie Goodwin's books, always good stories and characters.
