A small-town woman is swept off her feet by a caring stranger in this charming western romance.
Forty candles, and one for luck. Jenna Owens wants one thing for her birthday this year: a fairy-tale ending of her own and a little relaxation at a quaint California ranch. What she didn’t want was to get caught in a storm on her way to Meadow Valley. Or to get stuck with a ridiculously hot, too-charming-for-his-own-good cowboy—one who makes Jenna reconsider her “I don't date younger guys” rule. But a little vacation flirtation might be just what she needs.
Colt Morgan isn’t interested in long-term relationships. Not since his last one crashed and burned after his fiancée found out he wanted a big family. So when he learns that Jenna has a list of items to accomplish on her trip—including having fling—Colt is all too happy to oblige. Yet the more he and Jenna get to know each other, the more Colt starts to wonder if maybe they have a chance at a real future. But when Jenna’s past upends everything Colt thought he wanted, are all bets off? Or will they find a way to make both their dreams come true?

A teen librarian by day and a romance writer by night, A.J. Pine can’t seem to escape the world of fiction, and she wouldn’t have it any other way. She’s the author of the If Only series (Entangled Embrace), the Only You series (Berkley/Intermix), the Kingston Ale House series (Entangled Select), and the Crossroads Ranch series (Forever Romance). When she finds that 25th hour in the day, she might indulge in a tiny bit of TV where she nourishes her undying love of vampires, superheroes, and a certain high-functioning sociopath detective. She hails from the far off galaxy of the Chicago suburbs.
This is cowboy romance. The two main characters are learning to love again after they both have been hurt in the past. Jenna is about ten years older then Colt, but that does not stop them from felling in love with each other. I loved this love story, and I loved all the characters in this book. The side characters where everything in this book. I love that this book shows that a family does not have to share blood. This was a cute and fun book with some important topics cover in a great way. I cannot put into words how much I loved this book. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Forever) or author (A.J. Pine) via NetGalley, so I can give honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.
This book deserves 5+ stars. Such a feel good, happy book and I know we could all use a make me feel good book right about now! In ONLY A COWBOY WILL DO Jenna Ownes thinks she should have her life figured out after all she just added 40 candles to her last birthday cake, her life should be in order. She's finished raising her nephews, 3 handsome, responsible young men starting their own families now. Time for her to let loose a bit now, be uninhabited. She's done her duty now she wants a little relaxation at a quaint California ranch. She's looking for a 2 week vacation fling, no strings or commitments attached. Try telling that to her heart though when she meets, TOO HOT FOR HIS OWN GOOD, Colt Morgan owner of the ranch she is planning on staying at. In Only A Cowboy will Do ,Jenna's past seems to be rearing it's ugly head just when there is the possibility of a real romance starting. Will Colt Morgan be able to see past all this to the woman he has come to love? Thumbs up, I really enjoyed this book! Now I need to read more by this new to me author!
Pub Date 30 Mar 2021 I was given a complimentary copy of this book. Thank you. All opinions expressed are my own.
This might be my favorite book by AJ Pine yet. Age gap doesn't always work for me, but Jenna was so much fun and so relatable in her struggles and worries that it was easy to fall in love with her and with her relationship with Colt. Their entire "vacation fling" was just so much fun. I loved Lucy the chicken. I loved Jenna's laughter through situations that could have been frustrating or made someone else mad. I loved Colt's secret cinnamon roll-ness. AJ, you helped me move through a book drought in all the best ways. This story took us to places that we didn't expect with bits and pieces of former stories woven in and left me wanting so much more. I can't wait for what comes next.
Only a Cowboy Will Do is a sweet and touching story. Jenna is getting a two week vacation at a ranch, after years of looking after her now adult nephews. She didn’t count on Colt, a cowboy, younger than she and determined to have a large family. They embark on a fling, but it quickly turns serious. Colt is head over heels for Jenna, but could something she hasn’t shared with him railroad their relationship? I wondered how this would play out once I knew what Jenna’s unshared reveal was. I think the story is very realistic. My two favorite scenes were the cookie scenes and the Franki Valli sing along scene. Can’t forget about the pet chicken, Lucy, and all the feathers she ruffles. It’s a tender romance and you’ll want to see how it turns out. Thanks to NetGalley and Forever (Grand Central Publishing) for the early read.
Only a Cowboy Will Do by A.J. Pine is the third book in the Meadow Valley series and what makes it special for me is that it’s about a character from the Crossroads Ranch series. Jenna Owens raised her nephews after their mother died and did a fantastic job fostering them into the men they have become. For her 40th birthday, they gave her a 2-week vacation at their friends’ ranch and made all the arrangements for her transportation. In that short amount of time, she would meet her special someone and figure out her true calling in life.
I love it when a minor character gets a story of their own and you find out how truly wonderful they are. Jenna is a little quirky herself with a psychic chicken named Lucy that also got to go on vacation. She’s picked up by Colt Morgan and her adventure begins even before they leave her house. Jenna assesses her life and wonders if she missed out on things when she was busy raising a family. Now she wants to try new things and gets Colt to help her with a list. Over her two weeks, she finds herself attracted to this younger man and tries her best to keep it a fling, but her heart says otherwise. I liked Jenna and the decisions she made for herself. She put herself first and Colt was the icing on the cake. She found out that she can have it all.
I don’t know who I love more in this story; the hero or the heroine. Colt Morgan is quite the hero with his good manners, caring about his job and future, and his love for his only family, his sister Willow. He has charm and charisma and his grand gesture to proclaim his love absolutely did me in. He is a true-blue gentleman and someone you will fall in love with. He’s been hurt in the past and you can empathize with his feelings about family. It caught him off guard to find someone to love and love him back, after taking himself out of the game for so long. Colt is a character you can definitely fall in love with yourself.
Only a Cowboy Will Do is a tender romance about finding love and your calling in life. It’s a story about family and not just the kind you are born within. The revelation that Jenna could have it all with Colt was a real magical moment and definitely pushed this from a good story to a great story.
This year is a milestone birthday for Jenna Owens, and she wants a little taste of a happy ending for herself. She wouldn’t trade raising her nephews from teens to adults for anything, but she’s looking forward to two weeks just for herself on a peaceful California ranch. She did not expect a freak storm to leave her stranded at a stranger’s house with a charming and unfairly attractive cowboy who was only meant to give her a ride and now has her rethinking her rule against dating younger men. A vacation fling is beginning to sound like a fine idea.
Since his fiancé ripped his heart out six years ago, Colt Morgan has avoided serious relationships. But he does want a big family, so he has to get back in the dating saddle at some point and helping Jenna with her trip to-do list, which includes a vacation fling, begins to sound like a good place to start. As Colt truly comes to know Jenna, he realizes what’s developing between them is very real and begins to wonder if she could feel the same. Just when things are lining up, Jenna’s past throws a wrench in everything Colt has ever planned for his future and leaves them both reeling and unsure where to go from here.
Colt may just be the perfect man. I loved the small but sweetly caring things Colt and Jenna did for each other and the banter between them was charming and entertaining. Colt was so sweet with Jenna that I didn’t even mind too much that the steamy scenes were glossed over or fade to black. These two communicated fairly well and at least didn’t spend too much time avoiding each other when they hit snags, so I appreciated that. The strong and capable meets cinnamon roll hero is quite possibly my new favorite thanks to Colt. This book managed to be simultaneously cute and light while also addressing some serious issues and handling them quite tactfully. Also, any grand romantic gesture that includes a Frankie Valli song can’t go wrong.
ONLY A COWBOY WILL DO is the third instalment in AJ Pine’s contemporary, adult MEADOW VALLEY romance series. This is thirty year old, rancher Colt Morgan, and forty year old farmer Jenna Owens’ story line. ONLY A COWBOY WILL DO can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.
Told from dual third person perspectives (Colt and Jenna) ONLY A COWBOY WILL follows Jenna on a two-week vacation to Meadow Valley, California, a vacation gifted from the nephews she raised as her own. Hitching a ride with rancher Colt Morgan, our couple never expected to be caught in a rain storm, having to spend the night together with another couple. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Colt and Jenna, and the potential fall-out as their time together comes to a close.
Jenna Owens doesn’t date younger men. Having raised her three nephews after the death of their parents, Jenna has spent most of her time living on the farm, tending to the animals, and the nephews she loves but a two week vacation in Meadow Valley, California finds our heroine writing a ‘bucket list’ of things to do, a list Colt Morgan is more than willing to help her complete. Colt Morgan doesn’t do relationships having been burned in the past but something about Jenna draws Colt like a moth to a flame, and our hero is about to get burned when Jenna’s secrets are eventually revealed.
The relationship between Jenna and Colt is slow to develop as neither one is looking for anything permanent but Jenna’s bucket list includes a short term fling, and Colt is a willing participant until his heart is lost the our story line heroine. The $ex scenes are implied and fade to black.
We are reintroduced to Sam Callahan and Delaney Harper (My One and Only 2); Jenna’s nephews Jack, Luke and Walker Everett.
ONLY A COWBOY WILL DO is a story of family and relationships, secrets and acceptance; romance and love. The premise is emotional and captivating; the romance is passionate; the characters are energetic and charismatic.
Only A Cowboy Will Do is a captivating story of second chances. It’s the third book in A. J. Pine’s Meadow Valley series. The characters drew me into the story, Jenna Owens has hdevoted herself to raising her three nephews who have gifted her a two week vacation to the Meadow Valley Guest Ranch. Jenna realizes that this vacation is the perfect opportunity for her to create her own happily ever after. Loved the items on her bucket list—they might seem ordinary to most people—these words represented Jenna’s dreams. Colt Morgan is what dreams are made of—he’s sexy, sweet and an honest to God cowboy. I adored that he was immediately attracted to Jenna and he offered to help her with the bucket list. Loved his relationship with his sister and Delaney and Sam. A.J. Pine creates a special journey for Jenna and Colt. Loved how Colt and Jenna fell in love as they checked off the items on the bucket list. My favorite scene was when they shared beers and toffee bars underneath the stars as it was so romantic. The characters are relatable and the storyline unfolds at a perfect pace. I felt for Jenna; she stepped up and raised her nephews putting their needs above her own. Colt’s relationship with his sister gave me insight to his strength of character. Colt and Jenna desire the same thing—unconditional love and a family of their own. I rooted for this couple’s happiness as I read each page of this novel. If you are looking for a heartwarming story filled with love and laughter —pick up a copy of Only A Cowboy Will Do. I know you will enjoy Colt and Jenna’s journey as much as I did.
[I received a physical copy for an honest review] Only a Cowboy Will Do is a new charming Western Romance by AJ Pine.
Jenna has spent her life raising her nephews, and they feel she deserves time for herself , a two-week vacation to Meadow Valley ranch . She decides her to make herself a vacation bucket list which includes a no strings attached fling. Her ride to the Valley is from cowboy Colt who handsome, charming and 10 years younger than her. She decides no matter how cute he is he can't be her fling. Bad weather before they get to their destination, and a one bed situation, leads her to giving into her attraction to him. Colt signs up to help her with her list and jumps at the chance to kiss her when he wants. Their flings quickly turns into something more series but when they both have different wants for the future will Jenna be enough for Colt. " This just feel right, doesn't it ?" He whispered. "I can't explain it , but you and me ? We fit. "
Oh goodness my heart with this one! It's filled with so many sweet moments and light-hearted fun between Jenna and Colt. Horse rides, lakes swims, ice cream dates and the way Colt becomes adorably flustered around Jenna will put a smile on your face. Then both of their not so happy past is saddening and in the end when it really seems like maybe love isn't enough it will break your heart. Only a Cowboy Will Do by AJ Pine is a wonderful western romance. While very low steam this story brings with it plenty of fun and a boat load of emotions.
Jenna Owens has spent her adult life raising her three nephews. At the age of 40 she is ready to finally focus on herself. For her birthday her three grown nephews decide to send her to a ranch for two weeks as just the beginning of a massive thank you for the mother figure that she is. . For once in her life she decides it’s time to have a little fun. She makes a list and one item on her list is to have a vacation fling. Somehow, her two week, no strings attached fling with Colt turns serious immediately. . Drawn to each other and each with a heavy history, I love these two characters and I rooted for them the whole time. This story focuses on the power of love and family not necessarily build by blood. The strength of a good and loving foster family and being the security of a loving adult in a child’s eyes. This book has frivolous fun, instalove, good friendships but it also has love and depth and beauty. Also, the use of a children’s book that brought a sense of safety and security during life’s darkest moments made me cry. . Thank you to #NetGalley and #Forever for a digital arc in exchange for an honest review. . This book is available March 30th
Fun and sweet kind of read with a kick of heat added in. What could go wrong when you need a vacation and time to figure your stuff out? Maybe make a new friend to spend a little time with. All under the guise of fun and relaxation. AJ Pine does a sweet romance like no other in Only a Cowboy Would Do.
My first romance of the week, and this was an excellent way to hop out of a slump. Jenna & Colt gave me low angst, reverse age gap and hot cowboys, and I don’t think I could have asked for a single thing more. I enjoyed the ride, the burn between the two and the overall story.
On Jenna's 40th birthday, she is surprised with a trip out to a ranch to get away and relax from her loving family. Though she is hesitant to head out and go, she decides to give herself some Jenna time, and go after all. When Colt is asked by his buddy to take his aunt to his ranch, he's expecting an old lady. He's not expecitng Jenna, not looking a day over 25 in her short shorts. From here, these two start to develop feelings the more that they spend time together. They both have things that they have to reevaluate if they want this to work long term for them. Can they do it?
I've been waiting for this story for quite a while now, and Pine delivered on giving Jenna an amazing love story!
3.5 Stars - Super cute closed-door older heroine younger love interest. This book would have been a 5 star had it kept me interested - for some reason, I found myself distracted.
Thank you Forever Pub for an advanced copy for my sassy review!
I'm a fairly recent fan of A.J. Pine's novels, and enjoyed reading the two previous books in the Meadow Valley series, but this most recent novel is definitely my favorite so far, and it gets 5 stars from this reader.
As the novel opens, Jenna Owens is at her surprise 40th birthday party. Those who have been following this series, know that at a young age, she was the only one left to raise her 3 nephews, and she's done a wonderful job, raising them into good, kind and responsible adults. Having no children of her own, there are many things Jenna didn't get to experience because she was so busy raising her nephews. Her birthday gift from her nephews is an all expenses paid two-week vacation at the Meadow Valley Guest Ranch, her first vacation, ever, and Jenna makes a list of 7 Happy-for-Now things she wants to check off during this vacation, one of which is to have a no-strings attached fling, and when Colt Morgan, who is one of the owners of the ranch, arrives to pick her up for the 6-hour drive to the ranch, the attraction between these two characters is immediate. However, Colt is 10 years younger than Jenna, and she quickly informs him that she doesn't date younger men, and Colt, whose failed previous relationship ended in heartbreak, and has prevented him from seeking another relationship in the 5 years since, that is, until he sets eyes on Jenna.
In the previous novels, we learned that Colt grew up in foster care, while he and his younger sister were separated. Everyone around him seems to be pairing up, marrying, living together and/or starting a family. All Colt wants is a family and children of his own, but he's been cautious since the woman he planned to marry ended their relationship by telling him she didn't want children, yet she soon married someone else and is now pregnant with their third child. Jenna too, has had a previous relationship go bad. When she was in that relationship, as soon as she told the man she was seeing that she was unable to have children, he beat her. To say she's leery of getting involved in another relationship is putting it mildly, especially a relationship with a man 10 years her junior, but despite their protestations, and their eventual agreement to a no-strings fling, their chemistry is off the charts.
Eventually, their 2-week fling turns into more than either of these two characters anticipated. Colt and Jenna are so well-drawn, so funny, and so charming, that it was impossible not to fall in love with both of them. Heck, I even fell in love with Jenna's crazy psychic chicken, a recurring character in this series. Every time Colt mentions wanting a family of his own, Jenna realizes that she has to tell him that is something she can never give him, but she freezes, hoping to avoid ever letting him know why, but it's a secret he's eventually going to uncover, and when he does, it's gut-wrenching, for them and for this reader as well.
I cannot recall two characters in any novel whom I've enjoyed getting to know more than these two. Their growing relationship drew me in from the start, and I stayed up all night reading it from start to finish because I simply could not put it down. What started out as a light, fun read, turned into far more--it's a novel about family relationships, kindness, caring, emotional maturity, and, of course, love, and the sacrifices people are willing to make for that love to blossom. It was, quite simply, a great, heartwarming and emotion-filled read, and I cannot recommend it highly enough.
I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this novel. The opinions expressed are my own.
I just finished Only a Cowboy Will Do by A.J. Pine. Jenna turned 40 and her birthday wish was to have a "Happily-ever-now" after raising her 3 nephews to adulthood. They gave her a 2-week vacation at a ranch about 6 hours away with instructions to take the time for herself. She was even able to hitch a ride with one of the owners returning to the ranch in the morning. She made a list of things she thought she'd missed while raising her nephews... I laughed out loud; I sighed; I smiled so much my face hurt. I had such a good time reading this story! I loved the characters and setting. This is the first book I've read from this author, and it won't be the last
This author writes the sexiest, most romantic couples in her books. In Only a Cowboy Will Do by A.J. Pine heroine Jenna Owens and hero Colt Morgan are a very sexy, romantic couple. Jenna is given a two week vacation to Meadow Valley Guest Ranch for a 40th. birthday present from the three nephews she raised after their mother dies. On her to-do list there is to have a fling. When Jenna meets Colt it's instant attraction. Their fling turns into more than they originally bargained for. But after all, "Love conquers all."
I was so excited to read this book once I saw that Jenna was going to get her very own HEA. I didn't realize at the time though that it wouldn't be part of the Crossroads Ranch series (where her nephews are the MC's), but rather the Meadow Valley series. It's been 7 months since I read the last book in the MV series, so it wasn't as fresh in my mind as the CR series. Because of that, I had a hard time remembering the secondary characters in this one, but it didn't detract from the overall book's greatness.
Again, so happy to see Jenna get her book, especially since she's a 40 year old heroine. You don't find that in romance books too often, and given I'm just one year away from that number, so kudos to Ms. Pine for daring to write an older female, younger male, romance book. Colt wasn't too much younger than her though, just 10 years and while that doesn't always work with someone closer to their 20s, it worked for Colt since he was very mature and responsible for his age.
Colt had a really hard life, growing up in foster care and without any real family. But Ben's dad gave him a chance when he was an unruly teen and now he's a partner in the Meadow Valley ranch and helping run things. He agrees to pick up someone who he thinks is an old woman and transport her back to the ranch while he's in town visiting his sister. Only that 'old woman' ends up being the very beautiful Jenna.
If you've read the Crossroads Ranch series, then you know that Jenna is the aunt who cared for her 3 teenaged nephews after their mother (her sister) died and eventually their abusive dad as well. She raised them as if they were her own and they all grew up to be remarkable young men once they healed from their past. But she's been content to be that auntly presence in their life, until now. She wants something more and she truly deserves it after giving up so much of her younger adult years to raise them.
I loved the banter between Jenna and Colt. They were simply adorable together. And Colt, boy was he swoonworthy with his charm and great manners. He was a true gentleman and cowboy who had the biggest heart, despite all he went through growing up in foster care. For someone who lacked the love he deserved as a kid, he sure did have a lot to give others in his life. Jenna surprised me with her boldness at times, but I still thoroughly enjoyed her character and was rooting for her the whole time, especially learning of all she had given up to protect herself years ago.
There were some loose ends that I felt were left out of the story. What ever happened to the skinny dipping on the list that Jenna kept making such a big deal about? Did they go back to visit the older couple that welcomed them into their home after they promised to return (with Willow)? I mean that's all relatively minor in the grand scheme of things, but my mind didn't forget them. Oh well.
So is Eli's book next??? I sure hope so since he was a mystery that obviously suffered a lot in the last couple of years and needed some happy in his life. Or maybe Willow?
Sometimes a story comes along that just overflows with all the emotional feels I could ever ask for from a book. This time that book is Only A Cowboy Will Do, the third title in the Meadow Valley Ranch series (which is a connection to the Crossroads Ranch series). There are reasons why I’ll almost always mention that I prefer reading a series from start to finish in order, Colt and Jenna are a good example of that reasoning, for me at least. We’ve had bits and pieces of their lives in other stories, now this older woman / younger man couple come together in a flash of emotion, almost insta-love, in a story filled with laughter, family, and a secret that may stop what’s happening between Colt and Jenna before it ever becomes official… if they let it. If this is your first time in Meadow Valley, don’t worry you’ll not miss anything important but the background from reading the other stories adds so much to this particular romance couple for me.
Jenna is off on a gifted vacation from her three nephews that she’s raised by herself. The first vacation in a very, very long time, and Jenna has made herself a list of things to tick off during that vacation – including one vacation fling just for the fun of it. Little did she expect that this fling would lead her to the man she could love for a lifetime. There’s just one thing that could shatter that dream, the secret that she hasn’t found the courage to tell Colt just yet.
I’ve loved the Crossroads Ranch/Meadow Valley Ranch world for a while now, I enjoy the way that even though we’ve moved on to another series we never truly lose track or connections with old friends… like Jenna and Colt. I had such a good time with Only A Cowboy Will Do. The situation is realistic, the characters believable (often I felt like I knew some through other people in my life), and the situation they find themselves in while might be heartbreaking for some, in reality, it also opens up possibilities. I try not to do spoilers in reviews, yet the situation that Colt and Jenna faced is a reality for so many people, and watching them fall in love, that reveal, and seeing how love can reform into a family was an emotional journey.
If you love a really good love story where the happy ending is hard-fought for but worth it… then you’d enjoy not just Only A Cowboy Will Do but this entire series.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher, Forever via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*
Jenna Owens has a good life, one she is quite proud of, but there is one thing missing.. her happily ever after. Until now it has never really been that important to her, as she was far too busy caring for her nephews. They kept her busy enough that she never really made time for dating or looking for someone to grow old with. But that's all about to change when a handsome cowboy named Colt Morgan wanders into her life...
Only a Cowboy Will Do is a charming little tale about finding love when you least expect it. Jenna is about to embark on a life changing two week vacation at Meadow Valley Guest Ranch, only she doesn't know it. Well, she knows about the vacation of course, but the life changing part sneaks up on her. She never planned on meeting a man like Cole at the ranch. He makes her smile and swoon, and makes her feel special, which is something she hasn't felt in a long while. But when she learns how old he is she struggles a bit with that, age has always been a big deal to her. But Colt does the unthinkable and proves to her that it really doesn't matter how old you are, when your in love, you let your heart lead you, and everything else falls into place. Both of them have histories that could derail things at any given moment, but the question is will they let them? Or will their overwhelming attraction to one another, and the friendship they have found, win out and lead them to that happily ever after?
After reading the synopsis for this one I was excited to see how it would all play out, and I have to say I was quite happy with what I found between the pages. It was fun to read a story where the heroine was a little closer to my age, as you don't see those stories too often. I enjoyed watching her embrace the changes that came her way, learn to let go and let her heart take over the reigns. There was so much to love about this one, the characters were endearing, and the words gave my heartstrings a nice little tug! Highly recommend!
I requested an advanced copy of this title from the publisher, and I am voluntarily leaving my honest and unbiased.
Jenna and Colt’s story is an emotional, heartwarming and moving tale in Only a Cowboy Will Do by A.J. Pine, book three in her Meadow Valley series. Jenna Owens put her life on hold when her sister died in order to raise her teen nephews. Now forty years old, Jenna wants only one thing, her own fairy-tale ending with a happy ever after with someone to love her. While looking over her gifts and packing for trip to a quaint California ranch, Jenna finds a journal, reminding her of the days she used to write. Inspired, she creates a bucket list of things she would like to accomplish while away, including some flirtation, kissing, and maybe even a fling; forcing herself out of her comfort zone. Colt Morgan hasn’t been interested in a long-term relationship since his last one burned after his fiancée left when she learned he wanted a big family. Talking and flirting as these two travel to the Meadow Valley they find themselves wanting to know more about each other. What they didn’t expect was getting caught in a storm, spending a night at a stranger’s ranch, and discovering a strong magnetic pull, creating fireworks from the chemistry between them. Colt is all too happy to help Jenna with checking off the items on her list; especially the kisses and the fling. The more Colt and Jenna get to know each other, the Colt wonders if they have a chance at a real future. When Jenna’s past interferes with all of Colt’s plans, these two face an uncertain future. They just need to learn that there’s more than one path to travel down in order to make both of their dreams come true.
Ms. Pine wrote a wonderful, emotional, and enjoyable story that is not to be missed. She provided a tale rich with sizzling chemistry, magnetic attraction, amusing banter, and charming secondary characters giving Jenna and Colt a chance for forever love. I highly recommend Only a Cowboy Will Do to other readers.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
This book has everything any romance would love. A hard-working handsome cowboy with tons of charm and a smile that sets any woman’s heart racing. A beautiful, warm hearted and charismatic woman who is trying to find her place in life after a job well done. There is lots of flirty banter, a penchant towards getting muddy, quirky pets and stolen moments spent in each other’s arms. Both Jenna and Colt have had some particularly hard knocks in life that have left scars on their hearts and shaped their plans for the future. An unexpected love brings new hope and new pain to their lives, and they have to make a choice. Choose love and forge an amended plan for the future or walk away from each other.
Neither Jenna or Colt expects her two week vacation on the ranch he co-owns would change their lives forever. Her list of seven things to do for herself while on vacation includes having a vacation fling. The spark of attraction is there between from the moment they meet. But he is a decade younger than her, and she tells herself he is not for her so she warns him off. During a night spent sharing a room after a fierce storm causes a delay on their trip to the ranch, their attraction won’t be denied. Jenna bravely mentions her list and her wish for a fling and Colt finds himself quickly agreeing to part of it. He also agrees to help her mark off the items on her list. Both are very adept at flirting, and the stolen passionate kisses soon lead to a passionate night spent in each other’s arms. Jenna and Colt quickly become aware that it isn’t just attraction or lust between them. They both want so much more, but fear it too soon to mention love especially when her home and family are hours away. How could they make a relationship work? Will Colt even want one with her after he learns about a decision Jenna made years ago that will affect his plans for the future?
I received an ARC of this book via NetGalley and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Funny, sweet story by A. J Pine. I have not yet read any of the Crossroads Series nor the first in this series, so I am behind the 8 ball about knowing any of these delightful characters. The authors does provide a lot of back story, but I still don't know how Jenna Owens has a "psychic" chicken and why she takes said chicken with her when she goes on her first vacation.
Jennie's life plan took a trajectory, when her much older sister died of cervical cancer, and her brother-in-law fell to the bottle. She stepped up taking over the family farm and raised her 3 teenager nephews, and succeeded in raising them into extraordinary men. She however, gave up all her dreams to do so. Now at forty, her nephews give her a 2 week vacation to Meadow Vally Guest Ranch. She is also given a journal, in which she writes down a list of things that she has never done that will make her happy for now.
Colt Morgan, one of the owners of Meadow Valley Guest Ranch in town to visit his sister, has offered to drive Jack Everett's aunt to the ranch. Expecting to find an elderly lady, he is stunned by the beautiful and kind woman he finds. Quickly smitten, Jennie, pushes back, because she is 10 years his senior. Both have been hurt by previous "sweethearts", so they agree to a 2 week fling. They fit so well together that both want more, but they face an obstacle that they don't think they can conquer. Of course, the reader comes up with the perfect solution right away- the same one that takes Jennie and Cole much longer to realize to get their HEA.
I very much enjoyed the story and hope to catch up on all the previous books, not on my TBR list. I read an ARC from NetGalley.com. This is my unbiased and voluntary review.
Only a Cowboy Will Do is a very enjoyable romance from A.J. Pine. It made me smile, swoon and also hurt for what our heroine has been through.
Jenna is turning 40 and for many years her focus has been on making sure her nephews were raised properly after the death of their mother, her sister. She was happy to fill the void the best she could, but she definitely sacrificed because of it. To celebrate her big day, her nephews have given her a two week stay at a ranch to spend time on herself. With this in mind, she creates a "happy for now" list with seven things on it, including having a one-night stand, to help her focus just on her.
Colt is headed back to his ranch and so he is taking Jenna with him since she's going to spend a couple of weeks there. With sparks flying, but Jenna feeling their age difference is too much, they set out on their journey only to be sidelined by a storm. Colt, Jenna and Lucy, Jenna's chicken, end up taking refuge from the storm at the farmhouse of a couple they happen upon.
When they finally get to the ranch will they be able to fight the attraction they feel even though it's obvious what they are feeling? Is Colt the one to help her fulfill all of the items on her list?
This book has a little of everything, which really helps it along. You have the instant attraction, banter, hilarious situations that made me laugh out loud and also a very serious issue that had to be worked through. I appreciated everything about the book and I'm excited to see what Pine provides for us next!

Only a Cowboy Will Do is the latest work by author A. J. Pine. Jenna Owens has just celebrated her 40th birthday with the nephews she has raised since their early teens and their families surrounding her with love and gratitude. As a special gift to Jenna, her boys have given her a two week stay at Meadow Valley Guest Ranch in Meadow Valley, California. Transportation has been arranged by her nephews for the 6 or so hours of travel. Colt Morgan, one of the owners of the ranch, has been visiting his sister in town and they have arranged for him to pick her up and transport her to the Guest Ranch with a puddle jumper flight home.
Since there is such a long trip ahead, Jenna suggests taking a more scenic route than the major highways. Several hours from their destination they encounter drenching storms and a flat tire that lands them at the home of Maggie and Robert, a small farm along the way. It is this evening that draws 40 year old Jenna and 30 year old Colt together.
Through the days ahead Jenna and Colt share histories and feelings, but where will these feelings lead? With jumbled emotions and mixed feelings, Jenna and Colt negotiate a tenuous beginning to what just might be a wonderful relationship! However, both Jenna and Colt carry an assortment of baggage with them that may just preclude a future for them.
This is a delightful book from A. J. Pine. The characters are engaging, the setting enticing, and the story enchanting. I very much enjoyed this book and I do recommend it!
Only a Cowboy Will Do by A.J. Pine is a funny yet charming romance. It features a couple that have a huge age gap, yet they make the perfect pair. I loved how the older woman, Jenna, kept putting an age reminder out there to the younger guy. Colt, just shrugged it off. For all he knew, Jenna looked like a woman of his same age. He couldn't believe she was older. He never once let the 10-year gap bother him. What put him constantly on edge, was the way Jenna got under his skin and made him want to pursue things with her. Jenna is an outgoing and friendly woman that put her nephews first. Now, that they're all grown up, they are pushing her to go pursue what she wants in life. I loved the big family dynamic from both protagonists. Colt is as good looking as a cowboy rancher could be. He too, has a heart of gold that matches the heroine's. The heat between these two was intense. The attraction could be felt on every page. I was rooting for them. Usually the major age difference isn't something I want in a book, but it worked well for this story. A.J. Pine worked magic with it. Both characters were beyond twenty so, it wasn't weird like I thought it would be. Still, I couldn't quit laughing. Jenna, Colt, and Jenna's fortune telling chicken kept me entertained the whole time. My favorite scene was Colt covered in mud and Jenna trying so hard not laugh.

When Jenna Owens if gifted a two week vacation at Meadow Valley Ranch for her big four-oh she decides to embrace her first vacation in...forever, vowing to make this vacation one for the books. Colt Morgan, partial owner of the ranch, is in town visiting his sister, so he agrees to drive the mysterious Aunt Jenna and her psychic chicken (yup - you heard that right!) back up for the start of her vacation. What he doesn't expect is that Aunt Jenna will be young, vibrant, and breathtakingly beautiful.
Colt's love life has been on the back burner since his ex stomped on his heart six years prior. Jenna has similarly been gun shy since the horrible ending of her last relationship.
Jenna and Colt are so...amazing. These two are like puzzle pieces that fit together in all of the right ways. They have both lost family members far too early in life, and they are both so caring, compassionate and selfless in their generosity to others. Throw in some crazy funny interactions - the humor in this book had me laughing out loud. I absolutely loved how each of them put themselves out there. And like the citizens of Meadow Valley, I want a friend like Jenna too! She's the friend you didn't know you needed, but is absolutely irreplaceable.
While there are obstacles placed in their path, there is no way you can read Jenna and Colt's story and not wish for these two to have the HEA they so deserve. I couldn't get enough of this story. and I know you will feel the same!
After reading the previous books in the series, I was looking forward to reading Colt’s story. For some reason I had assumed he was a quiet, serious guy. So of course, I was happily surprised to learn that he was so much more than what I’d assumed he’d be. I loved him! Charming and sexy with a hidden vulnerability that surprised me, Colt was an amazing character to get to know. Like Colt, Jenna was also a great character to get to know. She was smart, funny and outgoing. She knew what she wanted and although hesitant to go for it, she put her doubts aside and asked for what she wanted.
And boy, what a ride that was!
Jenna and Colt together was a treat to read. Their attraction to each another was instantaneous and their connection hard to miss. Neither one was looking for love but both yearned to find it someday.
I enjoyed the way the author went about bringing these two together. The flirty banter and bickering made this a fun read, while the candid moments and inner musings brought forth a great range of emotions. It was in between these moments that Colt and Jenna’s connection continued to grow and where their chemistry stood out. I loved it! 🥰
Once again, I enjoyed visiting with Meadow Valley and it’s residents. I can’t wait to see which of the newly mentioned character will be starring in the next book in the series.
All in all, a fantastic addition to the series and a steamy, fun read.
Excited for Aunt Jenna and her crazy hen, Lucy, to get a love story.
While Jenna gave up her life to raise her nephews, she feels she gained more than she ever could have imagined with the way her life took a 180 when she was just a young woman herself. Now 40 and her 3 nephews paired off and starting their own families, it's time for Jenna to step out on her own, starting with a 2 week vacation on a ranch. I love the crossover to the Meadow Valley Series and the sexy Colt Morgan. Colt assumes the aunt he is picking up is an elder lady he will enjoy a nice drive back with to Meadow Valley. To his surprise, Jenna is lots younger and very attractive.
While Colt and Jenna have hilarious adventures simply getting back to Meadow Valley, their attraction to one another is immediate and intensifying. Jenna is hesitant about starting anything with a younger man, but she's ready for a vacation fling. Colt has been burned by what he thought was a serious previous relationship, he wants the family and children, but Jenna doesn't want anything but a fling, despite their growing feelings beyond attraction.
Jenna and Colt are everything you want in a book couple: instant attraction, charm, fun, hilarity, sexy banter, drama making them hold back, an issue seemingly impossible to overcome, love that conquers all!
