Truly, this is one of the best manga to ever grace paper. How is this not more popular than it is? The cast is so well written, and the newcomers are just as likeable. The style and character design is superb and every plot twist feels like a shock. It makes you feel like you never know where the story is going at any given moment. Such a wild ride.

I continue to be impressed that every single time Kafka Asagiri references Odasaku I tear up. I'm practically Pavlov's Dog at this point.

“Why do people write? It’s because if they’re in the story, they can always meet those they want to see”.

“Mongtomery-chan said: Even if the rest of my life doesn’t amount to anything, it’s does’t matter”

“Even at the end, the detective agency’s jokes aren’t funny” .

Review for vol. 13: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Review for vol. 16: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

(1) Mushitarou is so 'in character'---the guy is so picky and he wouldn't let you forget for a second how obsessed he is with occultism and demonology (the same thing happens with the novels penned by the actual novelist), and this is hilarious I am downright laughing.

(2) Ranpo doing blackmail against Mustitarou!!!! That's totally making my day~~~the detective trio (Ranpo, Poe, and Mushitaoru) is always the best~*heart hearts*

(3) Plus as usual, Kyouka is super helpful and the girl really knows exactly what she is doing~~get her on your side and you hardly have anything to worry about~~^_^

(4) I just can't shut up about it but Edogawa Rampo and Edgar Allan Poe's team-up is the cutest thing ever! You are welcome to fight me over it!!! Right now you can also add Mushitarou into the mix! Hahahahha!!!

(5) I guess I have been spoiled by the anime series for too long so right now one volume of manga can hardly feel enough! What a shame!

(6) We just have to have locked room mysteries~~it's just a must~

(7) I seriously, honestly need to watch the anime episodes that I haven't gotten to yet!!!!

(8) Okay~so a certain character turned out to be a turncoat, but at least he has a personal reason to go after the ADA which I can appreciate!

(9) I still don't like most of the Hunting Dogs characters mostly because I can't see their investment and motivation all that much~they are like, "Okay, the government/the power that be gave us a mission to hunt ADA down so I do exactly this", and nothing else. No personal investment, no personal gain or goals or barely any reason for them to emotionally get involved with hunting the ADA like prey outside of the self-righteous judgment of 'ADA are the terrorists and we are the good guys' and it's just downright flat. I do hope this will change later~

(10) From how the author wrote about Mushitaoru's...*coughs* friendship *coughs* with a certain someone......I just noticed the author is still very much insisted on the readers to write fanfics about the different ships in the series~~~ ^__^

(11) Unpopular opinion: I am not very interested in the newly arrived character, but anyway! I should give new characters more time!

(12) I am waiting to see more of the Guild's members' subplots!!!

Oh. My. Freaking. God. This is so so so wild. And it's about to get wilder. Out of all the arcs, this one is my absolute favorite so far. Throughout the series, I've been deeply connected with every single character, which is such a blessing as I've never feel that before. This volume also made me cry because Sigma is so freaking beautiful, I want to cry just by looking at him and–absolutely my favorite volume so far. No doubt. Love it. A very brilliant plot, very very clever. Oh, my tears.

Apparently this volume is up until chapter 73

Read it some time ago so this is kinda general but I miss Chuchu (obviously), the Hunting Dogs are fab and I can't hate anyone, neither Dos-kun nor Sigma...or whoever. I still love BSD and it's one of my favourite mangas. Harukawa sensei's art is getting better and better, just remember the first volume compared to this.

“[…] As long as at least one Agency member remains alive, they will never stop resisting.”

So many things are happening all at once it's crazy. I don't know which one I liked the best, to be honest, but I thoroughly enjoyed every last panel.

After the bomb that was dropped on us at the very end of the last volume, I couldn't wait to see how things were going to develop and I couldn't be happier. Tachihara's arc is incredibly touching and engaging his struggle is already something I am quite in love with and I want much more of it.

When they were first introduced The Hunting Dogs were not a group that I harbored much affection towards based on what they were doing but, honestly, this volume has made me appreciate them much more. They're all wacky and crazy in their own ways but they're also loyal, and good, and will be there for each other and that just warmed my heart to the last bit.

That being said, Ango is probably my MVP for this volume and I couldn't be happier about that.

Not only did we explore more of this very complicated, and stressful conflict but we also got introduced to new locations and characters, and I think it's all going to be a lot of fun.

“The Armed Detective Agency will never give up. In order to clear their group’s name, they’ll resist to the very end […] The way they set their lives ablaze, a guilty verdict will never happen. They’re either not guilty or they’re dead.”

_______________

Teruko and Tetcho are probably my favorites but I do love them all.

Am I starting to really like the Hunting Dogs? Yes, I think I am. They're just so crazy and fun.

Ango might actually be one of my favorite characters now (despite not being present much), and I feel like that’s probably because I’ve started latching onto every character that shows even a hint of being sleep-deprived...well, I’m not going to think about that too much.

The Hunting Dogs have an interesting dynamic. This volume was a lot less serious than the previous two, which probably means that the next one will be a lot darker.

I don’t understand why people dislike Ango. He’s just trying his best to make up for his own wrongdoings that were done because he was just trying to do his job. He actually shows a lot of remorse for what he’s done. And yet...people dislike him?

Also...the woman at the cafe that Dazai keeps on flirting with/harassing...is the owner’s wife? The owner looks really old...how old is the wife...what’s going on there...

It’s nice to have it confirmed that

Overall, good volume, with an adequate amount of ouch.

"They, who would sacrifice themselves, cannot possibly be guilty. They will prove their innocence or die trying."

This volume just prove that the Hunting Dogs are no better than Port Mafia. Though, I think Port Mafia is better than them uhuks.. Also, Saigiku Jono is so annoying URGHHH all he ever thinks is 'complete the mission to capture ADA members'. Brooo you nearly took innocent ppl's lives okay??! If not for Tetchou... poor cafe manager.. And what Mori-sensei said makes me feel touched huwaaaaa

🖊 THE ESCAPE (part 1 and 2)

~Ango: ME ASUSTÓ.
~Volvemos a ver a Lucy 💕 She’s underrated, me encanta su personaje. (Y su cariño por atsushiii)
~Dazai... sus latidos... He really..? How?

🎰 BUNGO HOUND DOGS (parts 1, 2 and 3)

SIGMA SIGMA SIGMA OMGGGG.

~Fukuzawa y Genichirou se conocen... that was unexpected.
~ Techou me cae bien, he’s kinda cute tbh

*This review is for Bungo Stray Dogs as a whole, not just this volume. I will add the same review under every volume.*

BSD is good, but not great. I like the character designs and the art is amazing. But it's way too overhyped in my opinion. There are some things I didn't like or found pretty dumb.

1. Everyone is a genius syndrome: 10 characters or even more have an insanely high IQ. if everyone is a chess god playing mind games, then nobody actually is. At some point it stops being 'clever' and starts being exhausting. Like let someone actually miscalculate ONCE without it being part of some bigger plan. BSD intelligence is stylized, exaggerated, plot driven, "genius aura", and characters know things because the story says so. So when someone says "Dazai has an IQ of 200" That number means basically nothing. Just "Please believe he is very smart." Same with Ranpo. An IQ of 200+ is not even useful in real world context. Authors use it like a power level. I prefer characters with realistic intelligence. Because they could exist, you could meet them, and you wouldn’t realize what they're doing until it’s too late. That’s way scarier than an IQ stat pulled from someone’s ass. Actually, where do BSD IQ numbers even COME from?? Asagiri did not run these characters through a Wechsler test. There is no in universe scene where Dazai sits down with a psychologist, Mori hands out scantrons, or Ranpo speedruns Mensa. IQ in BSD functions like "This character is very smart, please clap." Dazai's IQ is 200, Fyodor's is 200 (people argue about Dazai's and Fyodor's IQ, but I really don't care if it's 200 or 215), Ranpo's is 215, Mori's is 175+, Ango's is 170+, a lot of people say Chuuya's is also secretly 150+. So what does "smart" even mean anymore? It becomes a badge, a hierarchy, a fandom flex instead of a special skill/trait and something demonstrated. If everyone is a genius, no one is. There’s no contrast.

2. plot armor thicker than concrete: some characters should’ve been dead five arcs ago. I don't actually mind the plot armor that much, but sometimes it's a bit ridiculous. It gets a bit annoying when every loss is secretly a win in disguise.

3. Fake ugliness: This is the one that bothers me the most. BSD talks about the dark, ugly sides of humanity but then makes them hot, tragic, romantic, and conveniently justified. That’s not ugliness that’s aestheticized suffering. BSD wants to say "Look how ugly and broken humans are." But everyone is hot, everyone is exceptional, everyone has poetic trauma. So the ugliness is symbolic, sanitized, controlled. It’s shown from a distance. The characters are extremely competent, hyper talented, admired by the narrative, rarely truly powerless. They’re bad at living in a romantic way.

4. The female characters are badly written: not necessarily offensively bad but thin. They’re underdeveloped compared to the men, their trauma is glossed over, they rarely drive the plot in a way that isn’t immediately overshadowed, and when they are competent the narrative doesn’t linger on their inner world the same way it does with the guys. Meanwhile the male cast gets internal monologues, philosophy dumps, elaborate mind games and mythologized suffering.

5. The tragic backstory inflation: people don't like when someone complains about this, and I think all the backstories are interesting, but practically every character has the most insane past ever. Everybody’s parents are dead, abused, betrayed, experimented on, orphaned, shot, drowned, and emotionally obliterated. What bothers me is that for a lot of characters (especially female ones) we get a tragic past, one flashback, maybe one emotional speech, and then it’s never meaningfully addressed again. No long-term consequences, no behavioral patterns that actually complicate the plot, no messy coping, regression, or contradictions. It’s always maximum suffering, minimum specificity. Abuse. Experiments. Dead family. Betrayal. Rinse, repeat. Nuanced backstories would be things like loving parents who still fucked you up unintentionally, doing something morally wrong by choice and having to live with it, being privileged but empty, being loyal to the wrong people for too long, slow corruption instead of "one horrific event", failure without a villain to blame. BSD almost never does that. It prefers "Something horrible happened TO me" instead of "I made a decision that shaped who I became." And that’s why it all feels glamorized. If the character is a victim of extreme circumstances, the narrative can always go "see? not their fault." Nobody has to sit in the discomfort of agency. That’s also why characters like Dazai get sanitized by the fandom. If his past is framed as 'he was broken and saved" then people can pretend he was secretly good all along when the whole point should’ve been that he’s functional, charming, and still morally fcked. BSD could have been so much stronger if it trusted quieter uglier human flaws instead of trauma shock value. Less "experimented on as a child" and more "I chose wrong and kept choosing wrong."

6. The characters are not relatable: You always see many people being like "I kin Dazai" but in my opinion, they are not relatable at all. BSD characters don’t feel like people, they feel like concepts wearing drip. The constant galaxy brain IQ, hyper optimized trauma, perfectly timed suffering, flawless execution of plans…creates distance. You’re not watching someone LIVE, you’re watching someone perform a role the author assigned them. Real people misread situations, act out of insecurity, get lucky instead of smart, regret things that weren’t "necessary", fail in boring embarrassing ways. BSD characters almost never do that. Even their breakdowns are aesthetic. Even their mistakes are "actually part of the plan." That kills relatability HARD. You can always relate in theory. But it’s surface level "I relate to their trauma" or "I relate to feeling lost" and not "I recognize this person’s thought process" or "I’ve made that exact dumb choice" That’s why they feel unreal. It also ties back to the IQ thing. When everyone’s a genius the story stops being about human limitations. You can’t project yourself into someone who’s always five steps ahead, because most of us are just trying to survive step one without tripping over our own shoelaces. BSD wants you to admire its characters.
It rarely lets you recognize yourself in them.

7. Sometimes the story also can be straight up boring. Not all the time, but enough that you start checking how many chapters are left like "okay… are we done cooking or what?" To me, early arcs were meh, middle arcs slapped, later arcs felt like Asagiri just kept stacking twists because of escalation addiction.

BSD’s biggest crime is that it pretends to be deeper than it is. It wants to be profound, literary, morally complex, but it rarely commits to letting characters genuinely fail, rot or face consequences. It’s not bad. It’s just overhyped. Dazai especially feels more like a concept and less like a person. Everything in BSD is so glamourized. It refuses to make anything actually genuinely uncomfortable. Nobody is allowed to be truly pathetic, cruel, or wrong without the story going "actually, this was all justified." Like. Let someone be ugly and stay ugly. Also the overhyping of characters is wild. The fandom treats them like they’re the most complex beings ever written when half their personality is: smart, sad, hot, morally ambiguous (but not really). Everyone likes something different, of course, but instead of epic despair, operatic suffering, genius masterminds above consequence, I prefer just people being messy. So yeah. BSD isn’t trash. But it’s not the literary holy text people act like it is. It’s a stylish, sometimes fun, sometimes frustrating series that thinks it’s deeper than it actually commits to being. It's interesting, dramatic, fun at times. But relatable? Grounded? Human? Nah.

Important: If anyone ever reads this, don't take this review too seriously. I was just bored and decided to write a long review. Nothing against BSD or people who enjoy it. I actually used to be a huge BSD fan from like 2020 to 2024. And I glazed it a LOT, so I know how much people in the fandom exaggerate. I would give it 2 or 3 stars for how enjoyable it had been for me. The time in the fandom had been fun, but the story and characters itself are not something I like that much.

I love how Lucy is THAT BITCH and she knows it.🥹 I love her so much, she's so adorable and when she calls Atsushi a tabby cat and was smacking him about how he became a wanted man lol. I ship Atsushi with Akutagawa but Lucy is a close second fr.

The way the story keeps jerking me around with reveals and plot twists like damn okay?? I never looked twice at Ango before but he kinda ate in here.

The sky casino is soooo fucking cool, I was geeking so hard. Meeting a new character there and oh look, it's another hot man.👌 This series and hot men... name a more iconic duo. After watching the anime it's almost shocking how much better looking everyone is in this lmao like the anime did Fyodor sooo dirty.

Speaking of hot men, Dazai being locked up and still scheming and being in charge of their plans while giving Fyodor that shit ass smirk as they play chess??? I need a minute to chill the fuck out omg. Also he can do WHAT with his heart beat???

We get a lot of hunting dogs and I'm kinda like yeah I don't care tho??? But they are badass.

This is one of my favorite volume. I love the Hunting Dogs so much (especially Jouno Saigiku and Tachihara, I think they're interesting) and I'm glad to see more panels of them. The stories are great too, the characters are interesting, I love it and that's what keep me in this fandom. This is the first time I have been in a fandom for such a long time. Asagiri-sensei's idea never ceased to amaze me, I always wonder what's in his mind.

This would have gotten a 5 star rating purely for Sigma gracing us with his beauty alone. But on top of that this volume was also absolutely outstanding plotwise. This manga is getting more genius by the second and I'm all here for it.
