In an era of Galactic Empire rule, as the last of the Jedi are hunted and eliminated, a fledgling rebellion begins to take form. On the planet Lothal, con artist Ezra makes a living stealing Empire goods to sell on the black market, but one heist doesn't go as planned...Suddenly, this teen's solitary ways are challenged by a band of ragtag rebels-the crew of the starship Ghost!
Got to say I loved this book. Loved the anime style drawings. The visuals are awesome. I am really glad the focused the book on Ezra and Kanan. Playing up the Jedi angle just makes this so much better. This comic covers the first couple of episodes of Rebels. I don't if it was that I saw thus quite a while ago, or I missed some of the instance in the comic that where in the show but I really like how this book was done. Bonus story of Vader. Awesome as always.
Manga Star Wars is always worth looking at, and I like the art in this book. I also love Rebels in any format. But this manga retelling of the first couple episodes of the TV series doesn't add anything particularly new or interesting to the story or characters. Also, it's a strange choice to use swearing, when the TV series didn't have any of that. Why does everyone yell "Dammit" so often? That's wrong.
Solid offering, but these POV anime often catch me off guard, as Ezra’s voice just feels too simplified. Too childish. So much of his internal dialogue we can SEE in the show (source material), so it can be tough to see him work some things out in this way. But overall a fun adaptation. Recommend for youngsters looking to get into Star Wars and/or Rebels.
I can't seem to get enough 'Star Wars' in my life at the moment. On a whim, I even decided to check out a manga based on the franchise. This first volume of 'Star Wars Rebels' manga doesn't really do anything new or groundbreaking, but it felt kinda good to see these characters and the universe in this new format.
There is not much to say about the story, as this volume mostly follows exactly the plot of the first one hour television film 'Spark of Rebellion' barring a few minor changes. Although it's been quite a long time since I saw the first season of the show, this brought back some fond memories. We also get introduced to the main characters and their ship. Some more changes or a bit of depth in storytelling might have been better though.
The art was the main reason for my interest in this, and while I didn't like all of the character drawings, the environment and the ships were done quite beautifully in the style of manga art. The action sequences were also done with enough charisma to make readers recheck for missing bits and pieces.
The short side story featuring 'Darth Vader' at the end was very interesting, and as far as I can tell it adapts a small part of the novel 'Lords of the Sith'. This features some delightful drawing of Vader and made me interested to check out the novel.
Overall, I liked this short read despite the lack of originality or innovation in the plot and will probably check out the next two volumes for the art and for refreshing my memory of the animated series before I watch the later seasons.
The Star Wars comics are kind of hit-and-miss for me, and it was the same here. I've only seen a little of Star Wars Rebels, but I don't think the story benefited from being adapted to manga. I like the characters, but I would like them way less if this wasn't such a quick read.
This was fine. The art was cute, although it took me a bit to figure out how to read it since it was my first manga. The pacing was a bit off to me, it skimmed over a lot of the episode (for example, and there's also a weird amount of swearing. I mean, nothing more than "hell" and "damn" (and far be it for me to complain about swearing lmao) but it was jarring to see Ezra yell "dammit!" The dinner scene at the end was perfect though, I love this found family so much.
I have to admit first that I haven’t seen the series; Star Wars Rebels. I definitely will be adding it to my watch list now!
This is a great start to a series in the Star Wars world and I love expanding my Star Wars Universe with these manga novels. The art is so good but sometimes gets lost in the action. I love the way the eyes look. Anyway, I’m looking forward to volume two!!
Gorgeously illustrated retelling of the first arc of the SW Rebels television show. It was wonderful sing all our favorite characters in the manga format.
The Manga adaptation of the first two episodes ('Spark of Rebellion') of the Rebels animated series, set 5 BBY. On the Outer Rim world of Lothal the orphan and street thief Ezra Bridger is shocked to discover a group of people actively working against the Empire. He is further surprised to learn that their motives are altruistic and, seeing them helping the disenfranchised people of Lothal, begins to share their ideas of resistance.
Until Andor came along, I was a proponent of the fact that the tragically-overlooked Rebels was by far the best thing Disney had done with the Star Wars licence (I think people were put off by the animation style, but trust me people; the actual story is so much better than The Clone Wars). It's nice then to return to those early tales of how Ezra first joined up with Kanan, Hera and the crew of the Ghost.
This is a pretty enjoyable Manga volume and I certainly think that anyone unfamiliar with Rebels would find it an excellent jumping-on point for the series. However, as a big fan of the TV show, I have to admit that it doesn't entirely work as an adaptation. Two things hooked me on the TV series; the production design which harkens back to the original Ralph Macquarrie designs and the strong sense of warmth and family given off by the Ghost crew. Unfortunately, neither of those things is really present here, with Manga style obviously being the visual tone and action rather than emotion being the core of the book.
But I want to reiterate that this is a good book, it's just that it didn't feel authentic to the source material for me in the way that other Star Wars Manga has done.
Caveat: Rebels *might* be my favorite Star Wars content, it's certainly in my favorite era-- The Age of Rebellion.
I'm a newbie when it comes to Manga, so I'm still getting used to the format. I still think that for the cost, it feels like a bit of ripoff. I mean this volume can easily be read in about half an hour and it retails for 13 bucks. That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed this take on the first couple of episodes of Star Wars Rebels. The artwork is wonderful, and while this doesn't exactly line up with the series it's close enough that it doesn't really cause any major continuity problems.
****MILD SPOILERS BELOW****
One thing this Manga makes clear is that Ezra Bridger is the focus of the series. I, like many SW fans, didn't warm to Ezra right away when watching the animated series the first time. Over the course of 4 seasons and multiple viewings now, I have come to appreciate him so much more. This Manga version really gives us a closer look into Ezra's thoughts. We find more about his past right away in this volume. I don't think we learn about Ezra's parents until much later in the first season of the animated show. Here, we meet Ephraim and Mira Bridger in flashback in the second chapter of this first volume of the Manga. So this gives us valuable insight into Ezra's motivations early on. I'm not sure if the other volumes will follow suit, but I do like reading this story from essentially Ezra's POV, and I'm looking forward to Akira Aoka's retelling in the next volume.
The story itself was interesting, though it is different from the original series. It's not a bad thing, but you can tell some aspects are very similar the culture in mangas. I found some changes that they made added more to the story, such as Ezra's street life. However, some felt strange. WARNING SPOILERS But as soon as Kanan see's Ezra he asks who his master is???? Like you're revealing stuff way too quick/ not being cautious Kanan. They also made Hera apart of the first mission, as in on the ground and roaming with them. Also I felt like some key aspects of Ezra's character/development that took place in Spark of the Rebellion were also glossed over/changed which took away from some parts. Additionally, it feels like the personality we see from the other characters in Spark of the Rebellion is not show as much (especially with Zeb and Sabine).
I'll still continue to read it/ see it through since I'm digging the new Star Wars Rebels content. But keep that in mind what I said when buying it. It's like SWR the TV show is the "true manga" love and you're reading an "anime" version of it that's going in its own direction.
Volume 1 of the Rebels manga adapts the premier of the Star Wars Rebels TV show, The Spark of Rebellion, into the Japanese comic format. It's certainly not a one-to-one adaptation and some artistic liberties have been taken, but the core of the story is there for sure. Akira Aoki definitely bends things to fit the style of the medium, which made me chuckle or smirk occasionally, seeing Ezra or Kanan have a very dramatic moment shouting things in a manner very unlike the show. I'm sure there's a bit that's lost in translation as well, since this was an English show translated to a Japanese manga and now back to English, so don't expect exact quotes of dialog. But the key strokes are all there: the marketplace heist, finding the Holocron, the Wookies on Kessel, and Agent Kallus all make their appearances.
If you enjoy comics and especially the manga format, I think you'll enjoy the first volume of the Star Wars Rebels adaptation. It has the heart and soul of the TV show with a decidedly Japanese flair to it, which makes it a lot of fun to read.
I love the TV series Rebels, so I was really excited when I discovered there was a manga series as this series doesn’t have nearly enough written material in my humble fangirl opinion. ☺️
For the most part I really enjoyed it! This volume covers the first couple of episodes of the series and focuses solely on Ezra. I didn’t mind the changes and tweaks that had to be made to make this into a manga as it all worked and fit well within the original framework provided.
Unfortunately I don’t really like the art style. I’m not sure what it is exactly, but the art just strikes me as not quite right and I’m not fond of how some of the characters look. Also a few panels (mainly in the beginning) I wasn’t sure how to follow and therefore kind of lost me a bit. Also I thought the bonus manga about Darth Vader wasn’t necessary and didn’t make much sense for why it’s there.
A fun Star Wars manga that does my favorite characters well. Not sure if I’d ever read it again, but I’m glad I tried it.
Content: violence, explosions, and fighting (nothing over PG); mild swearing; The Force is talked about and used; a shirtless guy (we only see his back)
This was a really entertaining read and a decent introduction to Star Wars Rebels for anime/manga fans, I think. I loved the adaptation of the first Rebels episodes (though it was a very abridged adaptation) and seeing everything happen in a manga art style was fun. The art was not the best at times but I can forgive that for the most part. Some physics were ignored to advance the plot at the beginning (Ezra’s slingshot would not be nearly powerful enough to redirect a cannon on an AT-ST, even using the Force to help). The part of the story where Zeb leaves Ezra to be captured is completely skipped over. Still, I enjoyed the book very much. The anime/manga tropes lend themselves well to this type of story with a focus on the little family that the Ghost crew will become. There’s also a great little Darth Vader short at the end (which I believe is adapted from the ‘Dark Lords of the Sith’ novel).
I was super impressed with Rebels manga. Huge fan of the show and I am loving the art style - like, I could go for an anime Rebels for sure.
The gang looks so cute! Ezra and Kanan look like bad asses - their manga hair and eyes are so fitting for their characters. There are only a few volumes of the Rebels manga so I’m curious how pacing will play out. This covered a very small amount of the show, like two-three episodes tops. I’ve put off reading this series because I knew I was going to love it and it won’t take me long to make my way all the way through.
If you like manga and you like Star Wars (specifically Rebels), I think this is a good purchase. The art is great and the writing is way better than I expected.
It’s nothing particularly groundbreaking story wise, it goes over the events of the first few episodes of the show, but the art is where this truly shines.
It’s got such a delightful anime/manga vibe, as opposed to looking too graphic novel like the Mandalorian alleged manga does. The stylization of the characters and setting is done beautifully (I particularly like that they gave Ezra a poncho so he can be dramatic in it), and I love how it can go from a really serious detailed shot to a very simple comedic style where Ezra is just a funny little blob.
I definitely wanna get ahold of the other two in this series!
Star Wars rebels is probably my favorite cartoon, and finding out that there is a manga series for it now?? Amazing.
I absolutely adored the art style and the different take on the story for this one. There are a lot of similarities between the show and this volume but changes that I didn’t know I wanted to see for it! The ending took me a minute to understand but then I remembered how the pilot episode had been and it made sense after.
It did seem a bit rushed at certain scenes-such as getting towards the end but other than that, I can’t wait for volume 2.
(I don’t think there are spoilers in this but if you’re worried stay clear)
The art in this was absolutely adorable! There were very little words which kept it nice and short (allowed me to read it in under an hour). The downside of so few words kind of made it seem like Ezra was in love with kanan which is totally inappropriate because Ezra is 14. Some of the drawings were a tad bit wonky and the Wookiees sometimes looked like racist stereotypes. Overall I really enjoyed this adaptation of the tv show, it really made the characters look adorable
I loved this manga adaption of Rebels. The art was lovely. I wish I had bought this soon but I am so glad to have it now. I cannot wait for the next volume.
Also!! The Lord of the Sith chapter at the end. Love! Lords of the Sith is one of my absolute favorite SW novels. I hope that section continues on so badly. Isval is one of my favorite characters even though she was only in Lords of the Sith.
Would absolutely recommend to anyone that likes Rebels.
I'm a huge Rebels fan, so of course I'm a little bias when I see the crew of the Ghost again. So I think if you're like me, you'll enjoy this comic as a little treat. If you've never watched the show, it's probably not the greatest adaptation of the first episodes, but it is a good gateway drug.
Art: I loved the art, it had a unique flair to it, which I always enjoy. The panels just look really nice. I like how they adapted all the characters into the manga style. It's also really cute.
Story: The adaptation of course isn't one to one, and skips ALOT. It covers both episodes of Spark of Rebellion. I would say it adds to it in a good way. There's alot of heart and fluff? I guess. Like I said it's just very cute. I really liked that approach, it makes the crew feel alot more like a family. It's almost fanfic, but good fanfic. Ezra's character seems like he'd be more likeable to people new to Rebels, the expand on him a tad bit more.
I really like this comic, I wouldn't reccomend to everyone, but if you want a fun and sweet Star Wars read here you are.
