Book 1 of 4: A Witch's Love at the End of the World by Kujira
4 Stars for this graphic novel/Manga.
I've read a lot of graphic novels but this is my first Manga. I know right? I've collected comics for many, many years (mainly DC and Indy graphic novels such as Strangers in Paradise). When Manga first became popular, it was mostly young girls reading them, so I never got into them. Some of the girls I know (co-worker's daughters), even studied Japanese! I read about this series about teenage witches who fall in love and try to save the world and so I decided to give it a shot.
This is a world in which witches have been hiding for many, many years after almost disappearing after years of persecution and killings by the non-magical humans. They are waiting until the right time for revenge.
Alice Keating is the most talented and powerful teenage witch at Sternenlichtl, a secret school for training of witches. We are introduced to a new transfer student, Mari Muguruma (rumored to be a human!). So far she hasn't shown any powers, and she is shunned by her fellow students. She learns that the goal of the school is to eventually take revenge on the humans. Alice has been assigned to be Mari's tutor.
The first book, the two discover Mari's talents and that Alice has been told by her grandmother that when a witch falls in love, she loses her powers…

On me parle de sorcières qui tombent amoureuses, forcément j'étais obligée de le lire, même si c'est un manga.
Le dessin est très beau et agréable à regarder, l'histoire est à la fois mignonne et intéressante, documentée sur les origines des sorcières et la vie qu'elles ont eue. Le côté académie de magie est très chouette, et les deux héroïnes sont adorables.
J'ai hâte de lire les prochains tomes qui ont l'air encore plus intrigants !

This is...okay. It definitely has some pacing issues, with an almost glacial progression at first, and I'm not entirely comfortable with the way witches are characterized, although it's worth noting that "witches can't fall in love" is a theme I've seen in a light novel or two, so Kujiba is clearly drawing from a cultural idea. (And we won't talk about the one shot of a Star of David on a witch's necklace. Okay, we will - given the way that witches are talked about in the book, this is a very uncomfortable use of iconography.) It may merit a second volume because of the end, but mostly this leaves me underwhelmed, a little uncomfortable, and ready to hurt whoever decided on Alice's reverse-mullet hairdo.

Sapphic witches at magic school, what more could you want?? This has probably my favourite art style of the manga I've read so far, and I loved the story so much! Can't wait to read the sequels!

Cute sapphic magic school manga volume 1 beginning. I love the art style and the character design but the story feels very exposition heavy and doesn’t make me care that much about the characters sadly.

A slow burn but sweet beginning to an interesting series. If a witch falls in love, she loses her powers and given their mission of revenge against the humans who once persecuted them, none of them can afford such tender feelings. Alice is the top girl witch at the exclusive witch scho in Germany. The other girls respect her and are rather protective of her.
Enter Mari the misfit.
She can't read, or perform basic spells. She challenges long held beliefs much to the consternation of the faculty and other students.
And she's assigned to Alice who is to tutor her.
Only to discover there's a lot more to Mari and that "more" is needed by the witches for their own ends.
Unfortunately, Alice has come to have feelings for Mari which has the other girls jealous. Jealous girl witches + grimoire = trouble.

Mari recently came into her powers after a strange incident, and is sent away by her family to this school where she meets Alice. She doesn't understand her powers, and is tutored by Alice, so that she can use her magic more effectively.
Alice also happens to be the class beauty, and all of the other witches think she is beautiful, so they are starting to feel jealous about Mari and Alice spending so much time together.

This story is incredible! This manga has shot to the number two spot on my list of favorite yuri (after Scarlet by Chiri Yuino).
In the world of this story, witches are planning vengeance against humans for all the centuries of persecution and being burned at the stake. Their hope is to use the powers of a particularly strong teenage half-witch to resurrect every murdered witch on earth, and to build an army large enough to kill all humans. The problem is, the girl they've pinned their hopes on doesn't seem to actually have any magic. So she's assigned a mentor, the school prodigy. Nobody imagined this prodigy would begin to fall for her mentee.
Despite the overall dark, heavy theme, this manga remained lighthearted. Mari fails at every magical task she's given, to hilarious result. When Alice, the cool, aloof star student of the academy, starts spending time with Mari to help her improve her skills, they invoke the jealousy of Miriam, who has a crush on Alice, and a school rivalry is born.
Although Mari is the only character described as a half-breed, since witches in this setting are not considered to be human, all the major characters in the entire manga are female. It is presumed male witches exist, but the story takes place at an all-girls' witch academy, and only one teacher - also female - is ever introduced.
All the signs and spells in the manga are in German only, so I did have to tap into Google Translate to figure out some of the words.
The art is really beautiful, but I have to say, the characters in this manga have the weirdest hairstyles I have ever seen. They're definitely not the typical look I've seen in manga.
I absolutely adore the story and all the characters, even scheming Miriam. I can't wait to see where this manga goes and I hope it's going to be a long one.
TW: There are some dissection scenes. Firstly, it's a high school. Secondly, the witches need ingredients like frog livers for some spells. But when you see what Mari can do, you'll feel relief at these scenes.

This concept of witches infiltrating the humans ranks with a secret plot to exact revenge is just sooo interesting, I would have loved to read about a witch doing that and succeeding.
Instead what we got was a few girls being jealous that their friend was now paying more attention to the new girl other than them, and I'm pretty sure Miriam has a huge crush on Alice but anyway.
The interactions between the girls were interesting enough to keep the story going, and there were some genuinely good backstory points in this too. I just wish we had a bit more focus on the witch things rather than the girls being jealous of each other.
I also really liked the concept of Mari's resurrection powers, I would looove to see that be more explored in the future. And her backstory is shaping up to be quite interesting too

Une jolie surprise que j’attendais avec impatience ! C’est mon premier Kujira, et les dessins sont vraiment doux. Grâce à eux, j’ai été transportée directement dans l’univers.
Même si ce premier tome est très introductif et que l’action a été parfois beaucoup trop rapide à mon goût (notamment au niveau du développement de la relation entre des héroïnes), ça a été une lecture très agréable et vraiment mignonne. J’ai bien aimé suivre le quotidien des élèves de l’école, entre chuchotements dans les dortoirs et cours de magie (potions, vol à dos de balais, histoire de la sorcellerie…).
J’ai hâte de voir ce que le deuxième tome nous réserve ! A priori il s’agit d’une trilogie ⭐️

I am giving this one 3 stars mainly because of the art - there are some beautiful panels of the two characters when they are performing magic. The story is underdeveloped though, and so are the characters. We know very little about the two main characters, and within pages, they are in love with each other - and the question in the back of my mind is why. Since they fell in love so quickly, the love story fell flat. I also didn't like that the core of the story is that witches are working for humans to actually destroy them in the end. There are also some allusions to Nazism that were really uncomfortable.

Un yuri entre dues aprenents de bruixa que estudien al mateix institut, però que totes dues amaguen secrets sobre el seu passat. M'he trobat més acció de la que m'imaginava per ser el primer volum, però m'ha faltat més explicació del lore... hi ha alguna cosa que no acaba de fer clic. Per sort és una sèrie curta, així que ja veurem com avança!

Witches exist but were persecuted but now serve countries in secret and they have a German school and boy it sure does look really class-S there (minus the age thing) as school prodigy Alice teaches the underpowered Mari how to do anything.
However witches who fall in love lose their powers, so while the sparks are flying that means Alice herself might not be much longer if she isn’t careful...
I think it was less than six pages in when we’re focused on a witch’s brooch with the noted pagan symbol known as the *squints* Star of David on it that I realized this book might not work for me.
Then later on, the dissection of a frog is labelled as a heretical idea by somebody who has clearly heard a word yet does not know what it means but uses it anyway and I knew this book wasn’t for me.
Toss in a plot that boils down to ‘what if we had Jesus Christ raise a zombie army from the dead’ and you’ve got a book that truly doesn’t know what it wants to be (there’s one section of humorous montages that would be great if there were more than two of them).
Alice has to tutor Mari, Mari is despised by Alice’s clingy would-be love interest Miriam. Things start happening with no explanation, including one of the most bizarrely fast romances I’ve ever seen (and all one-sided since there’s no indication one party is even interested in the other, let alone gay or bi).
It’s all way too rushed. This is apparently a short series and it’s being plotted as such, but they’re cramming in way too much so everything is getting short shrift. The romance is flat, the lore is barely explained, it’s a mess. The art isn’t even terribly interesting - there’s one scene which should be a showstopper but is as resonant as a sea bell wrapped in an afghan.
2 stars. It’s not actively offensive, but even at a low number of books I don’t know that I want to bother finishing this. There’s a brief scene at the end that promises something interesting next time so I might brave it, but I won’t be expecting much.

With a roommates/ opposites attract/ tutoring partners to lovers/ lowkey forbidden romance sapphic romance??? I was so shocked and annoyed when this volume ended because I was so into it! I can't wait to finish the trilogy!

Estranhamente possui uma vibe de slice of life, mesmo sendo sobre bruxas no fim do mundo. Mas funciona!
Anos atrás, bruxas e humanos viviam em harmonia. Mas tudo mudou quando as bruxas foram o bode expiatório da humanidade e a caça às bruxas ocorreu. As poucas bruxas que sobreviveram se reuniram em um lugar remoto – a fim de tramar sua vingança contra a humanidade.
A história começa na escola de jovens bruxas, em que a aluna nova foi recentemente transferida. Ela vivia entre os humanos, não parece saber fazer qualquer espécie de mágica e não compreende a vontade de vingança.
Alice Keating é a melhor das bruxas e passa a ser a tutora de Mari Muguruma, para se assegurar de que ela aprenda mais rápido. O que elas não esperavam é que a proximidade irá fazê-las se apaixonar.
Há reviravoltas na trama, diversos personagens acabam recebendo um pouco de desenvolvimento e regras da magia do universo são expandidos.
O fim usa um tropo, que considero, preguiçoso; mas garante a todos os personagens compreensão (parcial) sobre seus atos e escolhas – o que é bem incomum de acontecer.
O romance entre as protagonistas é adorável, mas adoraria que a história em si fosse mais longa para que o romance fosse construído aos poucos. Talvez, com mais espaço para desenvolvimento, até outros personagens também fossem transformados pelo poder de Mari e o tropo preguiçoso não precisasse ser usado.
Mesmo tendo ressalvas, para uma história com apenas três volumes, ele é excelente. A história não é corrida e os personagens são bem pensados. Adoro o trabalho de Kujira, tanto a estética, quanto a forma em que ela foca nos pequenos gestos para demonstrar afeto.

Une intrigue un peu déjà vu qui insuffle confiance avec un début de romance.
Les graphismes sont modernes avec une touche florale.. Une histoire un peu doudou qui se lit très rapidement.
J'aime beaucoup l'intrigue on apprend les faits établis assez rapidement dans ce tome. Il s'agit d'une trilogie et le dernier tome est à paraître fin janvier 2022.
Je n'aime pas le comportement des filles de l'internat. La pimbeche et les clichés entre filles...

Les histoires de Kujira sont toujours plus complexes que le thème général. Elle utilise ici l'intérêt pour les histoires de sorcières pour parler de rancoeur et de vengeance accumulées qui s'opposent aux liens, aux sentiments. Tout cela avec une touche de douceur omniprésente dans le dessin épuré de la mangaka. Un début prometteur pour ce manga qui aura trois tomes.

Pretty cute, if not kind of "simple". Not much to complain about with only 3 installments though, of course. It's got a nice artstyle, nothing too out of the ordinary. The main characters are likeable, a bit surface-level. It says my copy of it has an extra in it that is only included in first editions. 3.5 stars.

Mein erster Girlslove Manga und es war direkt eine richtig gute Wahl 😊 Mari ist eine Halbbluthexe, die zunächst ungeschickt scheint, doch schon bald stellt sich heraus, dass in ihr eine besondere Macht schlummert. Alice ist ihre Tutorin an der Hexenschule und kann sich Maris Zauber kaum entziehen...
Der Manga bietet sich auch für Manganeulinge gut an, da er sehr verständlich geschrieben und gezeichnet ist. Der Zeichenstil der Figuren gefällt mir gut - Alice umgibt diese gewisse unnahbar Aura nicht nur in den Fremdbeschreibungen ihrer Mitschülerinnen, sondern auch in ihrer Zeichnung. Mari wirkt total sympathisch auf mich. Generell war es mal echt schön, in einem Manga nur Frauen zu sehen. Dazu noch Hexen - die perfekte Kombination 😊 ich freue mich auf die Fortsetzung, die ich mir auf jeden Fall holen will!

Mari wirkt total sympathisch auf mich. Generell war es mal echt schön, in einem Manga nur Frauen zu sehen. Dazu noch Hexen - die perfekte Kombination 😊 ich freue mich auf die Fortsetzung, die ich mir auf jeden Fall holen will!
