Return again to the stories of girls' hearts with this fifth installment in the éclair series. Continue reading tales from authors like Canno (A Kiss and White Lily for My Dearest Girl) and Nio Nakatani (Bloom into You).
This is realistically more of a 3.5, but the strength of the first two stories (both separately and as read back-to-back; have your tissues ready for the second) and the unusual inclusion of a science fiction piece bump it up to a 4. Seriously, that second story...
Éclair Orange is an incredibly pleasant series of one-shots that help make the fifth entry into the Éclair series the best yet. There’s a lot of amazing Yuri mangaka between the covers, as well as a wide range of genres, including fantasy, comedy, fluff, and straight forward romance. While there’s a few stories that are either “just okay” or not to my personal preference, there’s so much that’s really well executed. Truly, there’s something for ever kind of Yurijin and yuri reader.
I highly recommend picking this up for yourself, as well as the Yuri Lover in your life, especially since it’s the holidays. Make sure you don’t miss out on some really heartwarming stories about gals being the best of pals!
Hey, Eclair’s back! Another anthology of yuri stories in the preeminent repository for such things being released over here. From school girls to working women to... uh... school girls... there’s a lot on offer here!
Out of the gate this book starts with a really good story from Nio Nakatani. It takes something as simple as living arrangements and tells a believable and relatable story about how two people who live in the same space while dating can organically grow close over time. It’s understated but one of the best stories in the book.
The next one is a brilliant little ghost story that’s a treatise on loss and I love the way it shows somebody haunted by their past and how things ended. It’s melancholy at its best.
Other ones I enjoyed, let’s see... Wavering Lips turned out way better than I thought, Please Go Home is sort of cute and skirts the age line in an amusing way. Our Point of Intersection is very traditional, but nicely done.
I have to single out The Bitch Who Came Home, which I figured I would hate with a title like that, but ended up having a warmer heart than expected and has something to actually say about second chances and being up front about your intentions.
I didn’t love 52-hertz Whale, but it makes up for an underwhelming presentation by having a very sappy ending that hit me right in the feels. The sci-fi story is let down by not making a lick of sense - it starts really strong and then takes the wha-huh boat to eh?-Town by the end.
Still, why, lord, why, do these books pick the worst stories for the very end? This is the second one in a row where the last story exists as total fail state (it might even be by the same author, which is even worse, but I’m not going back to check).
Also, believe me when I say that Nio Nakatani is one of my favourite mangaka ever, but her cover work has never been her best work. Compare this to some of the other Eclairs and it’s a bit dull (even to her own cover for the very first one).
4 stars, rounding up from 3.5 because I found a lot to like here, even if nothing blew me away (obligatory reference to that one story Fly did in Eclair Blanche that is too amazing for words). It might be mostly utter fluff, but I liked more of it than I didn’t. The stories definitely lack in the gravitas department sometimes, but simple fun is good once in a while.
Overall it’s good. Most of the stories were great. Bb kuroda illustration was creepy, it was of a adult leering down at a child. The stories were really good until I hit the ‘please go home’ story, it has a high schooler x adult relationship. I liked the science fiction story, so much if it is modern day romance, that’s it’s nice they throw in another genre. It would be nice if they had a series of yuri stories each one a different genre or all of them historical but set in different time periods. I hope to see more by kazuno yuikawa. Omg they had Canno continue the unemployed adult and high school girl again.

Two good stories at the very beginning including a lovely slice-of-life by Nio Nakatani (of Bloom into You fame) and a poignant story about love and loss start this newest Éclair volume well but, as the other volumes testify, the rest of the stories are either pretty good or just plain meh. And then there are the just plain bad ones or the ones that make little sense - see the wacky sci-fi story that ended up not making any sense at all. And there are more settings for yuri beyond just high school right? Right?
The parts are better than the whole but when those parts are good, they are great.
I understand this books an anthology, meaning they don’t have the time to fully flesh out the characters but some of these stories aren’t even interesting they’re boring & bland and the ones that aren’t just feel like they’re lacking.
Double Bed: 5/10- the story felt lacking, idk how to really explain it. I understand that it’s an anthology, meaning it’s composed of short stories but I didn’t feel any connection between the characters, they felt flat.
Song of a Heat Haze: 7/10- Definitely better than the first, I’m not one to get emotional when I read but it definitely felt something, especially when it just ends. You don’t really get closure as the reader, you don’t get a response for Yui the story just ends, definitely made me a-little emotional.
Unbreakable Distance: 10/10- I really enjoyed this story, it was fun while also being endearing and sweet.
Tears Drops: 4/10- it was cute, that’s kind of the only thing I have to say. it’s a sweet short story about a elementary & middle schooler, getting to know each other learning that just because one is older doesn’t mean that she can’t relay on the older one.
Hertz Whale: 6/10- the story was sweet, its about not being heard. If you aren’t heard when you call out then what’s the point in calling to begin with. I think the message is sweet, that’s kinda it
You Should Look Properly: 2/10- I didn’t like it….. I honestly didn’t even understand that point of anything happening to be honest
Wavering Lips: 6/10-The story good, honestly I didn’t like the cheating part but I did like the message or lesson (whatever you wanna call it) the characters learned.
Please Go Home: 5/10- it was definitely funny, I enjoyed myself while reading it. I’m still kind of on the fence about the being a minor jokes, I’m assuming the ending is implying she’s 18 but the fact that’s it’s not fully stated keeps me on the fence.
Between Before & After 5/10- It was okay, the stories about relationships pacing. Both characters are moving slowly so the other doesn’t feel rushed. At the end they realize they were willing to move faster than they thought. It was alright.
A New Star 9/10- this might be my favorite one so far, I liked the sci-fi aspect it made it interesting. I enjoyed watching the characters connect & realize there wants & who they are as people.
The Unemployed Women & the High School Girl 4/10- it’s cute, that’s all I’ve got, cuz if they had actually did anything that would be illegal (16 & a 26yr old).
Our Point of Intersection 5/10- Cute story about understanding peoples personalities & getting to know them.
The Bitch Who Came Home 6/10- This story was definitely interesting, I don’t really like the idea of taking back a cheater especially when she come back without breaking up with her current girlfriend but the story was interesting never the less.
Best Wishes to the Awkward One 4/10
Karen-Chan Master 1/10- honestly this story was the worst one, I literally had to force myself to read it and it’s literally 3-4 pages.
Double Bed 3.5/5 Song of a Heat Haze 5/5 Unbreakable Distance 3/5 Tear Drops 2/5 52-Hertz Whale 3/5 You Should Look Properly 2.5/5 Wavering Lips 2/5 Please Go Home 1/5 Between Before and After 4/5 A New Star 4/5 The Unemployed Woman and the High School Girl 1/5 Our Point of Intersection 3/5 The Bitch Who Came Home 3/5 Best Wishes to the Awkward Ones 3/5 Karen-chan and Master 1.5/5
'Eclair Orange' is just what I want out of these anthologies; a good mix of mostly happy stories about interesting moments in relationships - the last volume was more often conflicted or dark, and so this was a welcome return to my tastes. If you like cute yuri stories, the whole series of these is good, but this is especially one I'd recommend.
4.5*/5* Ok.. so this was an amazing anthology. Initially I bought it because it has an amazing cover and ofc because it is yuri. The first three are the best but to be honest all of them are so cute.. sigh now I need to buy ALL the volumes in this anthology series :3
The artstyles were all adorable, but the stories didn't live up to my expectations. Wished there'd have been more real romance with couples that love each other ended up together. Or at least more real chemistry..
