It is 1847, and the past year has been almost quiet for Sam Ogden of Grand Junction, Colorado. The Oregon Trail opened, providing a northern route for settlers heading west by wagon train. The Santa Fe Trail continues to be the southern route westward and the American conquest of the southwestern territories is on everyone’s mind. Bent’s Fort in Pueblo, Colorado Territory, has become the hub for travelers on the Santa Fe. A military garrison mans the fort and its commanding officer governs the territory south as far as Santa Fe, now part of the United States. A family problem has arisen for one of General McIntyre’s officers. His younger brother has disappeared along with his young bride, traveling along the Overland Trail heading south toward Bent’s Fort. The young couple was supposed to rendezvous with the Lieutenant at the Fort, but they never arrived. The General granted a leave of absence to his officer and sent him to requisition the help of Sam Ogden, his go-to man for dangerous missions on the frontier. The story of the search and rescue operation began at once. On the trail they were to encounter a tale of horror, violence and crime not unusual to the lawless frontier. The account of their journey is given in this 18th volume of the Sam Ogden Mountain Man FRONTIER TRAUMA.
