Featuring the famously disaster-prone Mildred in "The Worst Witch" and "The Worst Witch Strikes Again."
"Pleasant, undemanding stories for young witch fanciers. . . . Humorous, gently eerie drawings on almost every page add to the fun." — SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL
Jill Murphy was a London-born English children's author, best known for The Worst Witch series and the Large Family picture books. She has been described as "one of the most engaging writers and illustrators for children in the land."
Jill Murphy was born in London and attended the Ursuline Convent in Wimbledon which, together with the boarding school stories she enjoyed reading, provided much of the material and inspiration Miss Cackle's Academy in the The Worst Witch, which she started when she was 15. She put the book on hold as she attended both Chelsea and Croydon Art Schools, but continued to write it whilst living in a village in Togo, West Africa for a year and then whilst working as a nanny back at home. The book was published when Jill turned 24 and proved an instant success. However, Jill continued working as a nanny until the publication of The Worst Witch Strikes Again prompted her to devote herself to full-time writing. The Worst Witch stories have become some of the most outstandingly successful titles on the Young Puffin paperback list and have sold more than 3 million copies. They were also made into a major ITV series. She was also well known for her picture books and was commended in the 1980 Kate Greenaway Medal for Peace at Last. A Quiet Night In was shortlisted for the same medal in 1994. She was perhaps best known for the very popular Mr and Mrs Large picture books, which detail the domestic chaos of an elephant family. Five Minute's Peace won the 1987 Parents Magazine Best Books for Babies Award, as well as being shortlisted for the 1986 Children's Book Award. All in One Piece was highly commended for the 1987 Kate Greenaway Award and shortlisted for the 1987 Children's Book Award. The Last Noo-noo won the 0-5 category of the 1995 Smarties Book Prize and in the same year was shortlisted for the English 4-11 Outstanding Children's Book of the Year, going on to win the 1996 Sheffield Children's Book Award. It won the 1996 Gateshead Gold Award. In the same year it was adapted as a play and performed at the Polka Theatre, London.
Asa ne spune și in aceasta carte .
Cuvant-cheie = "magie"

I loved my book so much.It was so funny. It was funny because of the things Mildred did.Like how she turned Ethel into a pig.It was so funny.I couldn't wait until I got to the next book.I loved it.I really enjoyed Mildred as a person too.Pg.22 and 23. Someone who would like this book is someone who likes funny books. They would really enjoy and love this book. They would enjoy this book because it is very funny. They would also like this book because it is enjoyable too.I enjoyed a lot. A challenge was keeping up with who was speaking. It was a challenge because it confused me a lot.It confused me because when I was reading someone might say something more than once. And it confused me a lot when it didn't say that that person had said something twice. This story was about how Mildred was in her first year of Miss Cackle's Academy for Witches and is already making a mess of it.She can't fly her broomstick or get spells right. Then she turns Ethel into a pig and into her sworn enemy. Now she had realized her troubles had just began.
The Worst Witch at School and the Worst Witch Strikes Again, by Jill Murphy
Murphy's law reigns supreme in the life of student witch, Mildred Hubble--anything that can go wrong does. She still manages to save the day on multiple occasions. A light, fun read for children 8-11. I like children's books and this was fun, but very young and light. It was cute and children this age will enjoy it.
It's not an ambitious book like Harry Potter. This one, by the way, came first and is quite similar in some ways, it's a boarding school with classes in potions etc. and a big spooky castle. The difference is, there is no abiding force of evil against which to struggle. This may be appropriate for very young children, but makes the book seem a bit fluffy in comparison. The evil that does read its head is minor and brief.
I love children's literature. This book is good, but not great. I am interested in what makes a book superior, because I want to write superior books. LOL!
I can honestly say that I was very skeptic about reading this book, I guess you can say I had no desire but my 3 nieces challenged me to read this book and told me I would fall in love with it. I of course took the challenge and wanted to prove them wrong but of course I turned out to be wrong I absolutely loved this book. It is extremely funny, humerous and pleasant. Even the eerie drawings captured my attention. Jill Murphey is a great author and she has made me want to read all of these books now lets just see if I can convince my nieces to let me borrow the books for a bit. I enjoyed this book not just because it was great but because it not only engaged me but my nieces and shows that a book that can capture an audience of all people proves to be a book of great intelligence. Great book highly reccommend.
It was great to find this book, had been trying to read this since like 10 years ago when saw the tv series. This book is a compedium of book 1 and 2. Includes lots of drawings which is great. Its really fun to read even as an adult.
I really enjoyed this book, it was one of my favorite ones. From the first page to the last page it had intresting and fun stuff happening that keept me reading it. This book was really enjoyable, i rally loved it, the part I liked the most was when Mildren saved the accademy. I think it was the most cool part of the book because, after this happened Mildren became a good witch, and not a worst one. I really recomend this book, I think you guys will enjoy it a lot.
When a witch named Mildred goes to school, there is going to be trouble. Mildred doesn't mean to get in trouble she just happens to always get in trouble. There she will make friends. And happen to save the school?
This book has 2 stories in 1. Read both. They are both funny with monkeys and cats both flying on broom sticks:)
This I read with my 7-year-old. It was VERY cute. I had seen the tv show years ago and fell in love. This was way before Harry Potter, but is so much like Harry Potter that you can use the movies to visualize most of the stories in this series. It is a lot more light-hearted, though, and perfect for an early chapter-book reader.
A wonderful read from my childhood, one I’d certainly suggest for other youngsters. Whilst it is not my all-time favourite childhood read I can still recall all the details of this one meaning it certainly left a lasting impression upon my young mind.
And isn’t that what we want with children’s books, for them to leave a positive lasting impression?
I liked reading about all things magical from a young age, and so I loved this series. I liked reading about all the scrapes Mildred manages to get herself into. I enjoyed watching the TV series as a kid too.
Super funny. I read this book in two days. I was at the beach and I sat there all day until it was time to eat and read. It caught my attention by everything that Mildred did wrong. She messed up in about everything that she does wrong. I recommend for you to read these books.
