Embracing Winter

Rate this book
Winter Varik believes in only one thing—protecting his family.

Even from himself.

For nearly 200 years, he’s kept a dangerous secret from his brothers.

But Winter might have found his salvation in the form of a sexy witch named Fox.

Too bad this same witch was named in a prophecy foretelling the destruction of the Variks.

In a race to uncover the truth behind the prophecy and take down a vampire determined to kill all the Variks, Winter may have to choose between finally having his heart’s desire and the family he loves.

Embracing Winter is the fourth book in the Lords of Discord paranormal romance series. This book contains vampires, werewolves, witches, nosy brothers, music, lots of rope, sass, hope, dirty talk, redemption, and a love that will never end. And did I mention rope? Lots of rope.

All the stars and then some more stars!

Well, that's how you wrap up a series, not only with a wonderful action packed romance for the youngest of the Varik brothers, but with a conclusion to the series long narrative which has been putting them in danger from the off.

I loved everything about this book, it hit all the right notes I'd expect from a paranormal romance and especially one from the pen of such a talented writer.

Winter Varik's secret absolutely fascinated me, this most reclusive member of the family has been something of a mystery throughout the series and here we find out why.

My heart broke for him so much but once Fox landed on the scene, it was clear Winter's life was going to find new joy because the witch was an absolute delight.

As the plot thickened, I loved how Fox became so involved through his own stubborn nature, his unwillingness to be a victim and the feeling that Winter was someone special who needed a person firmly in his corner.

The rest of the Variks and the clan make appearances but this book is, essentially, Winter and Fox trying to find out about the prophesy which is foretelling the downfall of their family and is being used by a manipulative vampire to try and take over as ruler of them all.

As every with Jocelynn, the action is on pointe, there's some pretty spectacular fight scenes in which we see just how Winter earned his Angel of Death nickname as the Varik executioner.

But there's so much more to him than that and I loved how Fox broke through every wall he'd put in place, to get beyond his determination to end the threat to his family and then end himself!

Winter may have had a streak of martyrdom, but it was justifiable because of the way he lived his life and I loved that not only Fox, but also his brothers once they found out his secret, called him out on it big time.

There's not going to be any plot spoilers here, but can I just say how much I loved Zelda in this book, I'd read a whole series just on her meddling and sparking with Aiden.

And, speaking of, CANNOT wait for his book and to see him finally find happiness after two centuries of looking after his boys and mourning his lost love Julianna.

Oh I simply adored this fourth installment. It was wonderful.

Now, I didn't read the third book in this series because it was poly and that's not my thing, but I found that I didn't miss too much by skipping it, so if you are also someone who skipped the third because of it being MMM, then you are not to worry, it's still fairly easily to follow this without having read the third (Reading the first two, though, is at least something you should do before reading this one.)

In this fourth and almost final book, we focus on Winter, the youngest Varik brother and the most mysterious and elusive.

The reason, as we find out, is because Winter doesn't want his brothers to know his gift, what he sees that they can't, and how he's able to be so sneaky and gather so much information.

In this, there is an apparent prophecy of a witch who will destroy the Variks, and Winter goes to get him from Damon, the evil vampire wanting to take over all vampires and hurt/kill humans. What he finds surprises him, a young man, a witch, who is innocent and barely knows how to even do magic and doesn't know why he's apparently supposed to bring an end to the Variks.

When Winter to takes Fox, the witch, to his home to protect him while they figure out what exactly the prophecy means, what it says and who said it, he starts to fall for the sweet, kind, sensitive witch, who starts to fall for Winter in turn.

Winter has been so serious for so long because of what he has to do to help his family, but Fox makes Winter smile and laugh and live a little more than he ever really has. Their connection grows as time goes on.

These two were so wonderful together, so sweet and adorable and I loved their chemistry. This was the perfect end to this series and the perfect HEA for Winter, the youngest and most mysterious - although not anymore, thanks to Fox - brother. I absolutely loved this.

I'm excited for Aiden's book, even though there wasn't supposed to be one for him, he deserves some happiness after all he's been through, and after losing Julianna. I hope he will get to move on and be happy with what will seem to be the man who had his heart first, however long ago that was. Here's hoping *crosses fingers*

Two massive thumbs up from me. Definitely recommend!

I'm a bit sad that this is the last Varik brother to find his mate, since that means this main series is coming to an end. I loved Winter's story, and I think that he found himself the perfect partner in Fox.

Winter is known as the boogeyman Varik, the one who does the dirty work for the family and is never seen or caught. It's made for a lonely existence, and has also put quite the burden on the youngest brother, to protect the family.

Fox is a young witch who doesn't have much access to his skills, but is kidnapped by the main opposition to the Varik family, in hopes that he will be the key to a prophecy surrounding the fall of the Variks.

I absolutely loved the two of them together - it's a bit of sunshine (Fox) and grump (Winter) and I loved how well they complimented the other. I also loved all of the other Variks involvement in this, and of course brothers being brothers, all the jibes and complaining about the other. I wish we had gotten to maybe see a bit more of the brothers fully knowing Winter's powers and secrets he kept all those years, but hope this won't be the last time we see all the brothers together.

I recommend reading this series in order as there's definitely a buildup to the overall story with the Variks gaining more followers and power as each brother finds their mate. I also love Aiden and am pretty intrigued by the notion of a story for him, knowing everything that we do about him already.

If you're looking for sexy vampires, with humans, other vampires, wolf shifters, and witches, I highly recommend this series!

I received an arc in exchange for an honest review.

Winter “Angel of Death” Varik has always been the most enigmatic of the brothers. His life hasn’t been easy. His priority has always been his family. As they face their greatest challenge. Winter faces his future.

Fox is the brightness to Winters shadows.

Winter has been my favourite brother. I love that he finally gets his turn at love. Fox turns out to be just what he needs.

Now I’m just waiting for Aiden’s book.

I have LOVED this series, I cannot get enough of the Varik brothers and their mates, I am sad that their adventures are over with.

As with all the previous books in the Lords of Discord series, I loved Embracing Winter and FINALLY discovering Winter’s secrets.

Winter is the mysterious Varik always there in the shadows and now we know how he does this and what his power truly is.

I loved every second spent with Winter and Fox, Fox is so cute, and I loved his first meeting with the brothers especially Rafe, that cracked me up.

As always, I loved all the banter / teasing between the brothers and their mates, these moments complete the stories for me and I cannot forget Aiden and YES, he is getting his own HEA out in October, SUPER EXCITED.

I am not saying anything about Winter and Fox’s journey, read it and fall in love with them for yourselves.

Winter has arrived and caught his Fox.

Wow. Definitely the best one in the series so far. Winter is such a great character and Fox fits him perfectly.
Loved these two together. And loved that we see all the others as well.

Can't wait to get Aidans story. I really hope it will be as good with a lot of the family in it

So we all know I didn't exactly start this series in order, Bel's book my 1st, this my 2nd...Yet I'm in love with this family & series!

A fast paced, emotional & action packed, Vampire-Witch romance with plenty of laughs & sexy times for fun!

So this will be not long review as I want to Grace it with a full one when I actually read the whole series from start (who knows when that will?). I also didn't read the 1st few pages, but was all in when Winter found about the Fox prophecy:

Winter is the youngest of the vampire brothers, whose mysterious aura drew me in Bel's book. Behind his sorta grumpy, broody dark aura is a heart so big, protective of those he cares for. A dark angel, with plenty of humor. And a power he'd kept hidden from his Bros, slowly driving him insane...until Fox.

Fox is a sassy, sweet, brave, funny AF witch who's...bad at magic to say a least. But got kidnapped by the bad guys due to a prophecy .

Winter becomes Fox's unwilling knight in shining armor, but they're both a blessing to eachother despite the circumstances. So perfect. Fox makes Win smile, keeps those voices at Bay. Saves him. Win makes Fox feel seen, accepted. It's not long they fall head fast, living together. It started as fun, sex but became so much more. The HEA was satisfying!

Of course, there's this prophecy to find more about, the vampire ministry problem & ghosts yes. It all keeps us at toes & emotions high. I was especially excited when Win told his Bros about his powers! The last chap was amazing, our fam is finally safe. Yay!!

Oh King Aiden, I wanna jump you. But damn, I'm happy to just read your book next hehe. 👀🥰

“ ‘Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown’ ”

This is book four in the series about the Varik Brothers and tells the story of Winter, the mysterious youngest, Wee One, brother.
The war with The Ministry has reached it's peak and it's time to end it all. When there is a prophecy floating around about the demise of the Variks Winter goes to investigate.
It is at the enemy's place where he meets Fox, the kidnapped witch who supposedly casts the prophecy, and Winter takes him home with him.

With Aiden leading the pack, the Varik clan sets out to free the world of the Ministry last survivor.
With the help of Fox, Winter makes peace with his past and is ready for his own HEA with him.

I've enjoyed the story of the Varik Brothers, but now it is time for Aiden to say his goodbye to his one love and start "living" again.

Part of the Lords of Discord Series and is best enjoyed when read in order:

Babes. BAAAAABES. Let’s talk about Embracing Winter.

Winter Varik? That cold, calculated, emotionally constipated assassin vampire? Yeah, he owns my whole damn soul now. I went in thinking he’d be the broody silent type the whole way through—but this man? He felt things. Deeply. And the moment we saw his soft side? I was gone. GONE, I tell you. And Fox? That spicy little witch with a big mouth and even bigger heart? He’s the kind of chaos I live for. He came in all sass and spark, and somehow cracked through Winter’s icy walls like it was nothing. Watching him call Winter out and still adore the hell outta him? Ugh. That dynamic was giving everything.

The prophecy drama? The found family vibes? The sneaky softness under all the stabby-stabby tension? PERFECTION. I was holding my breath half the time and squealing the other half. And don't even get me started on Winter being the “Angel of Death” but lowkey wanting cuddles and peace. The contrast was chef's kiss. Also—yes, they were sexy as hell, but the emotional intimacy? The vulnerability? I cried a little. Okay, maybe more than a little. Mind ya business.

Final verdict?
Embracing Winter fed my vampire obsession, fulfilled my need for snarky romance, and gave me the kind of emotional payoff that had me kicking my feet and giggling at 3AM. 10/10 would sell my soul to the Varik family.

Winter is definitely my favourite Varik brother! Getting to know more about his gift and burden was really interesting, and seeing all of the brothers realise just what they'd been asking of Winter for so long was a really emotional moment.

Fox had me laughing from the moment he appeared. I loved his sense of humour and his fiery nature, but the way both of these guys have insecurities about why the other wants to be with them made me want to wrap them both in a fluffy blanket and add to their cookies.

The final showdown did feel a little anti-climactic after so much build up, but I was happy with where the story ended. I'm looking forward to seeing Aiden find his HEA and settle into his new role.

5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book was a magical journey into Winter’s life. What makes him who he is? He was definitely the most mysterious person of the Varik clan. It was fab to finally get his back story.

Fox was an absolute delight! Loved him.
Chemistry between Winter and Fox was scorching hot. It took Winter a bit to thaw and recognize his true feelings for Fox.
All the Winter puns!
Made me giggle 🤭 a lot! So good!!
Loved their story and HEA. Will make you smile big!

We get a conclusion to all the story arcs except one and we get a bonus book!
I’m SO happy about getting his book!
He definitely deserves an HEA!

Eh, this was so so. I liked some parts but the entire plot twist with the "prophecy" was ruined in the end. Too much reliance on steam and Fox having too many TSTL moments... Just Aiden's book is left now, thank goodness and I am done with this series. So far, it's been mildly entertaining and able to hold my interest but it's repetitive and a tad too sappy for my taste, and yet I do not regret reading the series.

3.5-4 stars

Overall this and Bels story are my favorites, they were full of action and had the brothers powers be one of the main plots which I enjoyed.

Fox was funny and a great balance for Winter. And Winters power I think was the coolest out of all the brothers so far!

I am still hesitant for Aidens story i think since we have gotten glimpses of Aiden through all the books that him with his own story seems like a lot of riding on how it turns out.

The one I was waiting on!!!!

And it did not disappoint. Combine everything you might have loved about the first three books, and a dash of extra oompf, and you'll have this book.

Poor Winter takes brooding to a whole other level, I'm so glad to finally get his HEA. Fox did put me off a little in the beginning, because he was just so pushy, but I warmed to him quickly. Now I'm really upset that there's only one more book to go, because I really want to see what his potential is, and how he might team up with Little Varik against everyone's favorite troublemaker.

This was so worth the wait, and I'm extremely curious about Aiden's book.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader's copy. (Thankfully and luckily because otherwise I might have driven Drake insane with my endless whining for this book 🤣)

Reread Nov 2022

I didn’t enjoy this book as much the second time around. This will be kind of a rant review, but take it for what it is. It is only my opinion, and possibly a tainted one at that. You see, after nearly 3 years of escaping Covid, it rained down on my household the past couple of weeks. Not only did it take me a really long time to read this, but I was constantly rereading sections because I’d fall asleep or get foggy. So there you have it. I will attach some highlights/notes I made on my kindle during my journey through Winter’s story.

I think the main thing that bothered me was the amount of times Ms. Drake used the phrase “the vampire” in reference to Winter. According to my kindle count, the phrase was used 230 times in this book. Granted there were some times when it would refer to other vampires, but for the most part, it was in reference to Winter. In comparison, that phrase was used 130 times in Bel’s book, 110 times in Rafe’s, and only 50 times in Marcus’s. The phrase “the witch,” which sometimes would refer to Zelda, was used 124 times in this book. It got to the point where I was trying to reword each sentence in my head so I wouldn’t have to read “the vampire” anymore!!!

Another thing that bothered me was that the sex was very porny this time around. I ended up skimming a lot of those scenes and actually skipped the last one in the final chapter because I didn’t want to read anymore. I was done with that part of the story.

Some other thoughts:

▪️Winter may have usurped my love for Bel by a smidgeon, but I wanted a deeper story for him than the porny scenes that seemed to make up most of his relationship with Fox.
▪️While I have never watched Game of Thrones, I’ve seen enough memes from the show to find the “Winter is coming” references to be funny.
▪️It was nice to see Zelda in this book. I wish there had been more of her.
▪️I wish Bel had been able to get some closure with his mother instead of Aiden, but I know why Aiden needed it. That allowed an opening for his book to come next.
▪️

Although I would presently rate this much lower, I’m leaving my rating at 5 stars because I truly remember enjoying this so much more the first time.

Original August 2020 Review

I loved Fox so much! He was the perfect witch for Winter. This book was such an eye opener to everything Winter had been through and what made him tick. He has so many layers that we never got to see. Perfect book for him!

Looking forward to reading about Aiden.

Winter and Fox melted my heart, made me laugh like a maniac, and took my breath away with their fiery chemistry.

It seems so fitting that Winter, the most mysterious Varik brother, is the one to finish this series off with a bang. I am floored, breathless, and overwhelmed with emotions after devouring this epic novel. I'm still in denial about it all being over--I'm definitely not ready to say goodbye to this family I've become so attached to, but what a spectacular way to go.

Jocelynn was so careful to keep Winter's secrets hidden in the other books that I was desperate to know something real about his life. After so much speculation, it was immensely satisfying to finally understand how his vampire powers work and get a glimpse inside his head at last. Given how distant he's been in the other brothers' books, it was a shock for me to find out how heavily Winter carries his family's burdens and how much pressure he puts on himself to keep everyone safe. Uncovering the truth of why he's stayed so far from his family broke my heart. I wasn't expecting a lively, feisty guy like Fox to catch Winter's eye, but it only took me a couple of interactions to see just how perfect they could be together. Fox is the kind of guy who can not only go toe-to-toe with Winter but who also isn't afraid to speak his mind with no holds barred. I loved how fearlessly flirty he was with Winter--something about his boldness and the way Winter got so flustered about it made my heart get all melty.

Aside from the adorably swoony romance, the rest of this story was as thrilling and heart-pounding as ever. I had expected this book to have some sort of epic showdown, but all the twists and turns it took to get to that point were as unexpected as they were exciting. Zelda in particular was a quirky little surprise that had me grinning in delight. Though I was pretty sure I knew what Aiden's role in the aftermath would be, I couldn't have predicted when or where or how it happened.

While I don't think I'll ever be ready to accept that this series is really over, I couldn't be happier with how it all ended up. All the Varik brothers are at peace and in love and finally ready to live out their best lives. That final throwback to the sleepy selfies in book 1 was the cutest piece of nostalgia to send us all off.

**I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Let’s just start with this series BLOWS me away. LOL. I just can’t get enough and when it comes to an end, my heart is going to hurt. I never want to let hem go.

Witches, and vampires, and werewolves are some of my favorite things This book is a huge five stars plus for me. I can’t yell loudly enough anytime I think of the Variks that I love them and want in their clan.

Winter is the youngest of the Variks and the deadliest. He has been a big mystery from book one and in this book we see all of his secrets and his struggles. Then he meets Fox and everything changes for him.

I’m not going to summarize the story or blurb again but pick up the book and read it. You’ve got magic, wolves, vampires, prophesy to figure out, family, love, action, and a whole lot more.

One thing is will say that ever since book one, Aiden has taken my heart and he does even more so in this book and I can not wait for him to finally to find happiness again. No one deserves it more than him. He is the best father these boys could have ever asked for.

BRILLIANT

Phew.....Where to start?  I'll start by saying I am a HUGE Paranormal Romance junkie and Vampires are my absolute favorite.

Embracing Winter is the 4th book in the series but if you haven't started the series yet you should start at book 1 as the overall ARC starts with book 1 and ends with this one.

Winter has been a mystery since the beginning of and I was so happy we finally got to see him in action.  His story was sexy, sweet, intriguing and heart pounding.  The little twist and turns will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Drake has a magical way of weaving words together that draw you in and keep you captivated from start to finish.

This series is amazing and one of my top series.  It definitely will be in the reread pile.

I was nervous about this one. Winter seems to be the most intriguing of the brothers and after the last one I just wasn't sure what we would get.

This was good. I love that Winter got a witch and I love the gift that came with that love of a witch. Learning why he was the way he was, who he was and what he did was a little heartbreaking. Seeing him young and happy was very welcome.

I feel like there was a lot of time spent not really doing anything and that kind of bugged me a little. Even when there was real danger other things were going on and that grated a bit.

Overall this has been a great series and I am so glad we get one more book.

In this fourth instalment of the series, Winter finds his happiness in the form of Fox, a sassy, fun and flirty witch who’s an integral piece of the prophecy.
A well written, perfectly paced plot line with two wonderful main characters and of course, a cast of interesting side characters featuring the members of the Varik clan.
Winter and Fox have buckets of chemistry which leads to plenty of flirty and steamy moments interspersed with beautifully tender scenes which show a previously unseen side of Winter. Their romance isn’t without its hurdles but they do get their well deserved HEA.
There’s drama and action, minimal angst, more vampire politics, love of family and the overall story arc reaches its conclusion.
I found this to be a very enjoyable engaging read and I’m looking forward to Aiden’s story next.
This series would be best enjoyed if read in order.

Well worth the wait

What an excellent continuation in the "Lords of Discord" series....I'm not a big fan of paranormal story lines, but when written by Jocelynn Drake, I couldn't resist...patiently waiting for Aiden's story...I'll say it again Jocelynn Drake has serious word wizardry talent...

I believe that there's something in this series for everyone! It's been a wild ride, lots of hiccups and curve balls thrown in for good measure. The last story will be about King Adain. Due out in October to wrap up the series.
Go ahead and give this series a go. I promise you'll enjoy it, and who knows? Even love it as much as I did!

As much as I liked Winter and Fox, favourites are still Bel and his wolves. There was no subtlety with this romance and it was great. I liked the Winter puns and just seeing him thaw in general. Favourite part was the end. Looking forward to the last book.
